Only dish I was not crazy about was the jalapeño popper appetizer, the cheese that is used didn't taste quite right. I used to live in the neighborhood and what I wouldn't have given to have had this around then! Actually, if I lived closer, I'd be at risk of gaining a few pounds because this place rocks. We had the waffles (amazing and fluffy) & tenders (perfectly juicy and crisp) we're to die for. Each order came with 2 large waffles so I had an extra meal to take home. Also decided to get dessert but was too full so got peach cobbler to go. This homemade favorite barely made it through the door before we had spoons and had devoured it. We just got done eating food from Rolling Rooster. All of it was really great. * Chicken Tenders - Big, tender white chicken batter fried yum * Chicken Wings - Large chicken wings, batter fried. Plenty of meat. yum * Waffles - wow. really great taste! The one star off is because of two things that were disappointing and may cause us not to go back until after the virus. * I called in an order after looking up the menu and the phone number online. I thought I was ordering from the 11th Street shop, but I had ordered at the Wells Branch location. Confusing.... The website could be clearer.... not a big deal. * This was the second time we went to order there. The first time we did not even order because even the staff of the restaurant did not have masks on. This time the staff had masks, but not many of the people waiting for food. It was busy and there was no distance keeping and without masks in Texas on June 27 that is a very bad idea. We might go back after the virus. read more

First let me say that the service was great, Shae was very attentive and courteous. The chicken tenders were fresh, and both the batter and seasoning were on point and delicious. Sadly, the ambiance is terrible - they have a serious gnat problem, and need to really deep clean the establishment. We were literally swatting away gnats every 30 seconds - if I hadn't been with colleagues at lunch, I would have left off the back of that alone. The tables were sticky, the napkin holder was dusty, and the floor was slick. I was also disappointed in the sides - I got the rice & grave + the yams, and both were lukewarm at best. The rice was more than likely some instant rice, and the gravy lacked any real depth of flavor. The yams were ok, but lackluster and I would not get again - and I love yams. I tried a friends Mac & cheese, and that was delicious. Also, the waffle and pork chops looked great. Sadly, I will hesitate to come here again based solely on the cleanliness of the dining room - this leads me to assume the kitchen is not up to par either, and that is concerning. I hope what I experienced (a weekday lunch service) was a fluke in an otherwise good place. However in my opinion, if the dining room is that unclean at the least busy time of day, (there was one other person there when we arrived) and there are so many gnats I'm literally swatting them away from me the entire time - then I have to assume this place remains unclean at all times. Considering the price I paid for two chicken tenders, a coke, and two sides ($19 w/tip) I would expect a clean place to eat. They were overwhelmed, they had at a minimum 20 people in the restaurant. There were orders getting messed up for everyone. Came here because I was craving some good ole soul food. My husband and I started off the fried pickles, which were pretty tasty. Then we got the fried chicken which was really good. Well seasoned, and very crispy. For my sides I ordered Mac and cheese which wasn't too bad. I wish it was seasoned a little bit more, but overall not bad. I also ordered the greens, which were pretty good. Overall we had a pretty good experience with the food and the place. They weren't super busy when we went in on a Saturday afternoon. Came here for the first time with my husband around 3pm on Friday. Since it was not busy, we were seated right away. "Z" was our waitress. She was friendly and polite. She efficiently took our order on the iPad. We got the 2 wings, 2 fish and 2 sides combo and the Sampler platter #1. We got collard greens, fried okra and hush puppies as the sides. Everything was delicious! Pork chop - center cut, seasoned well and perfectly fried so that it is still moist. The BEST fried pork chop I've had in Austin so far! Collard greens - flavorful with a slight kick. I'd order them again! Hush puppies - very good, had some kind of tasty seasoning, so not the average bland hush puppies I've had in the past at other places Fried catfish - crispy light batter, not greasy at all as shown by the bread under it with hardly any oil on it. After being a loyal customer since they opened, I have enjoyed this place. We had our issues and always solved them amicably. Tonight, one of the managers or whatever asked me to leave, claiming I was causing a disturbance. All I was trying to do, was resolve an issue where I got sick from eating their food. Yesterday. There was no explanation of how I created a disturbance and the male"manager" kept saying "you're causing a disturbance. I'd like you to leave." Despite trying to resolve the issue outside of a health department investigation (giving TDSHS all the evidence I have of their health violations and what happened to me), the guy who told me to leave told me to just put it on Facebook. Then he again told me to leave. When I told them "Fije, we can resolve this through health law", he said "that's fine, You need to leave. After all the lack of hairnets or hats, lack of hand washing and generally filthy or unsafe conditions I saw working one day with them, I am not surprised I ended up sick. They were serving sodas and stuff when the water was unsafe to drink. I even ordered a water to see if they would still serve it. They did. Thus violating a city boil water notice. Charging 34 dollars (before my discount) and getting someone sick is one thing. This type of thing happens. It's partially my fault for trusting them with my safety. To claim I was causing a disturbance is ridiculous. To refuse to explain, is worse. To have a manager that knows there are health violations, but not rectify them immediately is worst. I can deal with rudeness and people falsely accusing me. I will not tolerate a restaurant refusing to fix a food borne illness issue. ESPECIALLY when I can prove it. I have never been treated so poorly by a manager. I never cause an issue intentionally. I ALWAYS try to be on my best behavior. When there is a problem with my behavior, I always welcome calm discussion about my behavior. At this point a few things are going to happen. I will never go there again. I will tell everyone who wants to listen about what I have seen and experienced. I will be making a formal complaint with the health department. I will be making a formal complaint with the Better Business Bureau. Anyone who is thinking about going here, I recommend going elsewhere. Even if you end up sick (they did it to me twice that I know of), they will not take ownership or rectify the situation properly. I went there in good faith to get the issue solved. I wasn't even just demanding my money back. Had they apologized and at least acknowledged they understood why I was upset, that would have been the end of it. I wasn't even yelling or banging on anything. Yet I'm the one causing the disturbance? Hell no. They are just lucky I don't have the ability to sue them for any of this. read more

I went with the catfish and wings deal with Mac and cheese and collard greens. Fish and chicken were fried perfectly and very flavorful. I'm pretty picky with how my food is cooked but I was pleased with the meat. The sides weren't as good but eatable. Would definitely go back in a heartbeat. I grabbed a couple drinks at the bar as well. The prices are a little high (wish bars would post prices but I'm picky about liquor so I'd probably still get my favorite liquor) but it's expected. You can't judge Rolling Rooster by its strip center location (recently moved in at Mopac & Wells Branch from the previous location in P-ville). No one comes in here to be wowed by the interior design or trendy address. We're here for the delicious fried food, friendly service, and cheap drinks! Chicken wings: fried whole (with all 3 segments), juicy inside, crispy & perfectly rendered on the skin-side, and tossed with some kind of salty magic dust. You can add the spicy wing sauce, but these wings are excellent just as they're served. Fried shrimp: lightly battered with tails still on, these plump & very clean shrimp are cooked just enough to have that good snap to them. Ask for cocktail sauce if you like. Fried catfish: Ahhhhh, I could eat about 5 pounds of this tender, perfectly cleaned filets of farm-raised catfish. If you are from SETX or Louisiana, you are going to feel like you've found a portal back home with a bite of this fish. They'll bring you some tartar sauce if you want, but you won't need it. Waffle: custardy & sweet, typically made with buttermilk, a bit heavy but still quite enjoyable, especially after adding the table furnished bottle of syrup. They sometimes also have a red velvet waffle version, too! Collard greens: smokey, salty, porky goodness just like Mama used to make. Watch out for hidden bones (from the salt pork). I've not yet gotten around to trying the oxtails and pork chops, but judging from the rest, I'd expect they're good! Your best bet to sample it all is to have everyone at the table order a different combo plate variation and share. Or, just go hog wild and get yourself the 2 wings, 2 fish, 2 shrimp, mac, & greens $18 with an added waffle for $4. Now if you're on some sort of low salt or another restricted diet, this place is probably not going to be the best spot for your next meal. But if you are looking to indulge in some good ol' homestyle Southern soul food, Rolling Rooster will leave you more than satisfied. Oh, and about those cheap drinks... They have a full bar and there are different specials throughout the week (like a recent Monday Madness special with $3 cocktails). It is with great dismay, and regrets I feel not only my responsibility but my obligation and duty to write this review. As an African-American consumer I choose when possible to support black-owned business. I find it unfortunate on rare occasions that we give passes for the inconsistencies, lack of service and quality of product to our own that we would never allow to our counterparts. On Friday evening I made a small catering order for a gathering at my home which consisted of 1/2 pan of greens, 1/2 pan of mac and cheese and 1/2 pan or in this case 27 "FRIED WINGS w/extra dust". I asked to pick up this order precisely at 11:30am the following day - Saturday. Due to past experiences with my order not being ready upon arrival and having to wait an addition 25 to 45 mins. Upon my arrival this time at 11:40 I opted to call to ensure my pick up was ready. The host advised me that they had not begin the order since they wanted it to be hot upon my arrival so the would get started right away and it would be ready when I arrived ( I'm here). Finally picked up my order 45 mins later and behind schedule. I arrived at home and to my dismay the order for wings were completely wrong. For the price of 27.00 I got (27) dried up/old hot wings (chicken jerky) see photo below. I am convinced that these "wingettes" we're NOT just prepaired fresh. I called in and spoke to the same host who apologized explaining the the cook was new and didn't quite understand the order. She went on to explain I could return but there would be a 30 upcharge .ARE YOU SERIOUS!!! I inquired about my inconvenience of not getting my order when requested and driving all the way home (South Park Meadow) only to discover the gave me the wrong wings‍. She stated if I had ordered this before I should know there us an upcharge. Apologized again for the new cook but she could not give me free wings. What about my inconvenience, my time, and my gas fir travel.
