You can really taste the love that went into all this food. This is a food truck right across from HEB mueller in that swimming pool parking lot. She's only open on the weekends and her food can be ordered on DoorDash but she has more menu items in person than on DoorDash. I online ordered and picked up 3 different orders. 2 of them were not ready and she had me wait in my car and she brought them out to me so I didn't melt in the heat. Now the important stuff the menu... Ok who knew you could fry ribs?!?! They were on point. 4 to an order. Ribs were still moist, the batter had a crunch, and the meat fell off the bone. The dirty rice was the best dirty rice I've ever eaten. It was loaded up with seafood The smothered pork chops were 2 to an order and 2 sides served on a bed of white rice. Also very moist and great flavor, the Mac n cheese was not runny which I personally hate when it's just a runny mess, the fried cabbage also had a great flavor and it was still crunchy. The jerk chicken had great flavor but it was ordered as mild (not by me) and it definitely needed the heat/spice,the jumbalaya side was also tasty We also got the hot Cheetos boudin balls (I forgot to take a picture) they were huge and not spicy at first bite the heat sneaks up on you. The strawberry crunch cake was a big slice and reminded me of strawberry cake doughnut but that banana pudding was also probably the best banana pudding I've ever eaten. I felt all the portions were huge and prices were fair. This definitely not a food truck to sleep on. I've been told she makes great oxtails but they sell out fast.

They had a location in San Antonio over 20 years ago on San Pedro at the former Maverick Cafe and I…read morewas impressed with them the first time I ate there. I was impressed with the chicken fried steak and the complimentary corn muffins and sweet potato biscuits. I even got a slice of sweet potato pie once near Thanksgiving. But Hoover's closed down the S.A. restaurant a few months later. No biggie. I'll just go dine at the original one in Austin. A few months later on a rainy and ugly day in Austin in March 2006 I rode the bus from downtown to here. The restaurant was huge and roomy and I got seated but had to wait a long time for a waiter and left as soon as I saw people that got seated after me got served first. A few months later I rode the bus to here and got seated and was served by a young white guy who seemed exhausted and wanted to be anywhere except work. 20 years later I found out the sad news that Hoover's last day in business would be today May 31,2026. I drove here from San Antonio and noticed how much the restaurant has changed. It got smaller inside. Maybe the 2020 pandemic had something to do with that. I got seated and waited on by a friendly black waiter and ordered an Arnold Palmer and a cup of gumbo for an appetizer which was good, hot and satisfying. For the entree I got the chicken fried steak with black eyed peas and buttered spinach. The sides were okay but the CFS was a bit tough when I cut into it. For dessert, a slice of chocolate cream pie was the perfect way to end the meal. I came here one last time last week and got here earlier than I had arrived last time. I was waited on by a Hispanic waiter who seemed friendly but I had a weird feeling he was staring at me weird whenever he left my table. For appetizer I ordered a small cornbread and 2 biscuit muffins. They no longer served the free corn muffins and sweet potato biscuits like they used to serve 20 years ago. I got the Jamaican jerk chicken and a hot sausage link with cowboy beans and coleslaw. The beans were great and the slaw was okay. The perk chicken seemed a bit dry but good and the sausage was good but not as spicy as I expected. The cornbread was good and so were the biscuit muffins that were big for just 99 cents a pop. I ordered the banana pudding for dessert and that was a good conclusion to my last meal here at Hoover's. Hoover's Cooking is an Austin original that will be greatly missed. I hope whatever restaurant that moves into this soon to be vacant space will serve good food at an affordable price and won't be like the other places on Manor that serve outrageous prices for food that is just mediocre or subpar.

You can't go wrong, everything on the menu is a hit. We shared appetizers, like the queso w/chips and the cornbread. I ordered the special, the hamsteak and jezebel, with sides salad, mac n cheese, and with a sausage link because why not. I had to remember to save room for dessert because the cheesecake here is amazing! I had the chocolate and cranberry cheesecake, which is worth every bite. The service is also excellent. They know they're closing but that did not stop them from taking care of our group like we were family. Our group enjoyed every bit of the experience. I hope to make it back again. This place has too many good memories and we will miss every bit of it. Get some merch!

This place operates on a tab-based system, so no need to wait for a check, since the tab is opened for you before you're seated. This worked very smoothly! This would be a great place for a date or anything requiring an aesthetically pleasing ambiance, the wood lining and ceiling along with the blackboard menu give this place a great vibe.

Everything is counter service so you'll order your entire meal at the counter along with drinks, the cashier will give you a number and the service staff will bring your items to your table. My friend and I ordered several different items on the menu to try out, we got the etouffee, red beans and rice, and a mushroom salad. My favorite out of those items was the mushroom salad with vinagarette dressing, who doesn't love mushrooms and some greens! The etouffee was rich and savory with what i believe was their rotating protein of the week. Can't really go wrong with red beans and rice, these are like an upgraded popeyes version. To end the meal we tried their beignets which weren't stellar but reminded me more of a fried donut with some powdered sugar sprinkled on top. I'd come back but maybe not get so much food since we both definitely left stuffed!
