Dans is an Austin classic. I have been coming here for years. They have a great burger and fries and I love he sweet tea. The staff are friendly and it's old school, order at the counter they call your number for pick up. The place is always clean and has the old diner feel. The staff love their jobs and sometimes clean up trays from table but that's not the norm during super busy times There is no drive thru or outdoor seating but the booths feel comfy and nostalgic. It's an Austin institution and the retro diner vibes are here! Our family finally stopped by for lunch and loved the old school decor and kind service but felt the food was just alright. The menu is very simple and all in all has just the classics. I got a cheeseburger dressed all the way and some onion rings and fries to share with the rest of the family. Food comes out pretty quick and hot. That said, the curly fries were probably the best part of the meal - good fry, well seasoned and crispy. The burger was very ok - no seasoning, super greasy and meat is a bit dry - definitely needs ketchup situation. The onion rings are hand breaded but a bit soggy even fresh. Dan's is a little bit of a throwback to an old burger joint. Burgers are good and hefty. The fixings are fresh and the pickles are the highlight. The menu is simple and sweet with cashiers ready to take your order. I had a great experience and it's decorated just like a diner should be. Of the fry choices the curly fries were best. They have the Cajun style flavor. There are Coke products served here. As for the parking, it is limited because it gets busy but just be patient. I've heard that their breakfast is good, but I wasn't able to try it since they only serve it until 10:30am. I read reviews that say the tables are grimey, but they were not bad when we went. The interior looks like a classic American diner. I got a cheeseburger, my friend got a cheeseburger with jalapenos, and we shared a large fry for a total of $16. The large fry was not actually that large. It seemed more like a medium fry to me. The fries were pretty good, although I think most fries are good, so these were normal. For a burger joint that's been around for 50 years, it tastes like it (great, no frills, freshly made-to-order burgers and fries)! But...it also looks like it. The inside is pretty disgusting, hence the 3 star rating. I'd say 3-3.5/5 overall. They also serve breakfast! The AC supply and returns in the ceiling had an ungodly amount of dust. The ceiling tiles and ceiling grid had so many stains and rust. It was not the type of place you'd want to sit in to eat. Ceiling fan in the lobby was caked with dust. Sure, it's an old fashioned diner style place with hard benches and tables. They do wipe them down in between customers, but they're long overdue for a good clean up and upgrade. The food itself is decent, albeit a bit pricy for a diner. The burgers were hot and fresh and flavorful! The onion rings were okay, and the curly fries were tastier than their regular fries looked, but not the best I've had. The vanilla malt (not pictured) was tasty but brick thick. Difficult to drink from the plastic straw. If you want a no frills, fresh, hot burger - this is the place. I can't say I'd return with so many other more convenient burger spots around town, but I'm glad I finally tried this long-standing Austin spot! read more

If you're looking for a great place to get a really good burger, you can find it at this institutional landmark. This place has been in the same place on Lamar Boulevard for five decades. Unfortunately, it also is showing some signs of its age. If you're coming here during the lunch hours between 11 and 1 pm, parking can be a hassle and you can expect at least a 10 minute wait. I do recommend getting it to go because the less than spacious dining room is always packed during this time. I recommend their double meat burger and their chocolate shakes are great, but they are not hand scooped. Their fries are good, but nothing really that special. The thing I noticed missing was the fact that they used to offer three sizes of their burgers and now they don't. Although, seven dollars for a double single cheese large burger is still a great deal. The service is good and the kitchen crew is very capable of handling the rush. I was excited to finally give Dan's Hamburgers a visit due to all of the recommendations I got for a good burger. Upon arriving, you can definitely tell that the place has been around for a while. The building is old, and doesn't seem like much when walking in. The cashier/customer service was that of any normal fast food restaurant. And the tables were all dirty as well. I ordered the Double Meat and Single Cheese regular, sandwich only, which came out to $6.59 before taxes. Not a bad price, but I must say that the burger tastes almost identical to Whataburger. Just an average fast food burger. Not sure what all the hype is about, but I've got a feeling it's a nostalgia thing for all the Austinites who have been around for a while. Dans has such good hamburgers and chicken tenders. They are much better than the typical fast food locations nearby. (I also love their walnut brownies they make homemade). The only dislike I have is that they don't have a drive thru window and you have to call in to order to-go. Other than that, the workers are so nice and helpful. Lunch rush is pretty crazy obviously so make sure you plan accordingly if you're going/ordering during lunch. read more
