Short Stop has been a long-time staple in the city and surrounding suburbs. We have some solid entries in the fast-food burger scene with P. Terry's and In and Out (solid burger, awful fries, admittedly), but for my money, Short Stop delivers the best all-around experience. Their burgers resemble the flavor of Burger King, except Short Stop doesn't just use chemicals to create the flavor. Also, I have yet to find a better fast food French fry than Short Stop. P Terrys gives SS a run for its money in the burger category, but the fries put SS about PT for me. Additionally, SS has additional menu items which are super solid, namely the catfish and Chicken Slammer sandwich. Seriously, the Slammer is a hidden gem on the menu. One thing worth noting is that I have been to Short Stop dozens of times, and they have yet to make a single mistake on any of my orders. read more

Austin classic burger chain. You can get your classic hamburger here in a drive through format. If you want to save a little bit more the combo #1 is even cheaper on Wednesdays and Saturdays. I love their fries yeah they are frozen but to me they are just like Mc Donald's or Whataburger fries just they are more fresh than those places. The burger is typical as most Texas burger joints cooked in a flat top. It's dressed all the way with mayo, mustard, and ketchup. It also has chopped lettuce, onion, and tomato. I've had their Apple pie before and these are fried just like they should be not that 'sassy' baked apple pie you find at the Golden Arches. If you are really hungry you can add a corn dog too. This location is in a prime location off Anderson Ln. so expect a wait at lunch and navigating the lot that it share with Cabo Bob's and a drive through coffee shop. Short Stop #12; located on the corner of IH35 & E38th St. On Oct. 20th, Friday, I went to this Short Stop and purchased a 5 pc basket of fried catfish for $15.99. When I got home, I noticed that the pcs were very flat and skinny, 3 extremely greasy dark hush puppies and a lot of fries. The filets were not thick meat, but very skimpy on twisted ends of skin fried very hard. I was very upset and felt that I was overcharged. The following day, I called and spoke to the Manager named LaQuisha and tried to tell her how bad the fish was. She was very rude and cut me off and denied that the fish was too flat and thin. I called the Corporate of the Owner named Gerald twice that following Monday and Thursday. I filed a complaint with the Secretary against the Manager and about the poor quality of the skimpy fish. The Owner has not responded. Next step is to file my complaint with BBB. read more

Whataburger had too long of a line today, so I decided to try out Short Stop for a change and it turned out to be a great decision. I got the double meat cheese burger combo with a frozen lemonade and I was very satisfied. Their fries were very good; they were freshly crisp and hot with a dash of salt (not too much salt, just enough to hit the spot). The burger was made with fresh ingredients and was quite tasty. The frozen lemonade was also fantastic, loved the cherry in it as well! I'm surprised this place is rated so lowly honestly because it really was very good. How to lose a happy regular customer and some free advice on how to avoid simple mistakes in the future: Step 1) Get their order wrong (it had 3 items in it. Not very complicated. Next time, take 5 seconds to double check the items and cross them off as you bag them). Step 2) Don't answer your phone after 10 rings when they call you to give you a chance to fix the problem. (Answer the phone). Step 3) Waste more of their time by printing the wrong phone number on the other receipt. CC receipt had one #. Order system had another. (Have correct phone numbers). Step 4) When you finally pick up when they call back again, spend 5 minutes dancing around the fact that you won't refund the difference over the phone (Have a defined system in place for screwups. I'm sure this is not the first time and it won't be the last, but continuing to waste your customer's time is a surefire way of making them more mad). Step 5) Ask them to drive back. (Not only did you screw up the order, now you want me to spend more money to fix YOUR problem) Step 6) Tell them you will replace the missing item. (This part was fine, until...) Step 7) After waiting several minutes at the drive thru, come back out and ask them for the bag. WHAT? I could have shown you a picture of the items, or if you had even told me to bring the unconsumed items back on my return visit, maybe I would have begrudgingly done it. But you didn't ask for it over the phone, so of course I didn't bring it. I thought we'd already established that you screwed up. Step 8) Inform the customer that you will not correct the missing double cheeseburger, but will give them a single. (At this point Iyour customer is pissed off and hangry, and it's game over). So after all this... Not a single apology. An "I'm sorry" would have made a huge difference, but instead you basically accuse your customer of trying to cheat you out of $2 worth of raw materials? As if I had nothing better to do than to drive all the way back out there. I didn't even ask for a full refund, just the cost difference of my wrongg order so that I paid for what I got Want to know how other places handled similar situations? I'll give you some examples: * An apology and a coupon for a sandwich on them on the next visit * An apology and the missing items + a small token "we're sorry" item. * An apology and a gift card. * Immediate refund of the missing item w/ no charge for the item mistakenly put in it's place In every single one of those cases, I would have preferred that the screw up never happened in the first place. But they owned their screw up, tried to apologize, and make it right without me asking them for anything. I know the pandemic has been hard on small businesses. In every one of those other cases, I basically payed back whatever token of good will they gave me with follow up business and/or outsized tips on my next visit. So now here I am, a customer that's probably frequented your establishment 5 times in the past month, who you will never see again. And now I'm angry enough that I am posting this crappy review for the world to see. All because you wouldn't just say, "I'm sorry for the inconvenience, let me make it up to you". This is my go to place when I want a fast, inexpensive, great tasting burger. I completely agree with Steven N., the other mainstream fast food burger joints just don't measure up. If you can hold off till a Wednesday or Saturday, their specials are a steal. I love that it comes with everything on it (condiments) and the fries are amazing! But today, I needed a quick drive through burger on the way back to the office and I always remembered Short Stop as being quick, above average, and inexpensive. So, here's the verdict. 1) Quick? Yes, they're still pretty quick. 2) Above average? Average at best. The burger was pretty ok. The fries were pretty standard fries that probably get delivered frozen from a food service company. Salty and far from crispy. 3) Inexpensive? Not so much. A double cheeseburger combo (without even upsizing it) came out to just under $9. Long story short. Ah.... fast food burgers the way they should be. Short Stop is the only "fast food" buger joint I ever go to these days (I've boycotted McD's and the BK lounge for a long long time). It's drive-thru or walk-up service only, which has a certain charm all it's own. Nothing like getting your meal at a little shack that's smaller than a rock and roll tour bus. They have locations all over Austin and apparently are also behind the Sandy's Custard stand down on Barton Springs. The food - on those occasions where I'm hankering for an artery clogging good time, I opt for the Double Meat, Double Cheese burger with fries and an Ice-Tea. The burger is tasty, messy and finger licking good. Personally I think those people at Huts are getting hosed - Short Stop's got em beat in my book. The fries are thin cut and golden brown - about on par with McDs. They never seem to salt them enough tho, so I have to ask for extra salt. My other usual here is the grilled chicken sandwich (hold the mayo). Good stuff. A note for you fountain drinking Coca-Cola afficionados - The fountain Coke at Short Stop was one of my favorites before I got off the sauce. Love this place, it's amazing how some companies can just exist as short stop burgers while other chains come to town and just out number them in locations. I'll put up a short stop burger against IN N OUT burger any time, they are just so moist and juicy. You will not find short stop burgers on highways or near hwy exits. My g/f and I stopped by this small burger joint on the way home from the grocery store. After passing up the Texadelphia right next door (against my judgement), we ordered the basic combos with a burger, fries, and a drink. After receiving the order from the teller (fast and friendly), and reaching in to gobble up some fries, they are cold & soggy. Once we arrived home less than 2 miles away (and no we didn't unload the groceries first b/c we were starving), the bun was completely soaked through. I was immediately skeptical, and only after taking the top bun off did I take a bite. Even after I told them to *86 the mustard, mayo, and ketchup, the bun was sopping wet. Burger patty was small and almost flavorless. All in all, not a great burger, but at least the Coke had ice in it!
