I've lived in Austin way too long for this to be my first visit to Dan's. I had an early appointment and afterward I wanted a simple reasonably cheap breakfast, and I decided to give Dan's a try. There's plenty of nostalgia for Austin "as it used to be," and I can understand that, but I try not to get into it, especially given all the cool new things about Austin. But I will admit that this place feels like a throwback to simpler cheaper times and I really enjoyed it. No hipster vibe, no avocado, toast, or shrimp and grits, just a damn good breakfast, with plenty of variations, all at a reasonable price. Since I wasn't too hungry, I ordered the half order of biscuits and gravy. One big split biscuit, a generous dollop of excellent sausage gravy, one over easy, egg, and two slices of very good bacon made for a tasty, filling, and surprisingly economical breakfast. Very unique local burger experience. Very tasty and well crafted burger. Did I mention, well crafted? Dan's burgers have very vibrant textures and flavors unique to its own. I'm not sure it measures up to the greatest 'fast food' burgers of all time, but it's pretty darn good. The walk-in is OK but the booth and the seats are torn. They need to be fixed. It's very small and a lot of trash in the trash bins to the floor where you can see it. The ceiling has water leaks and it's cracked and the wall beams are dusty with some cobwebs and it's broken down a little bit and the floor needs to be fixed because it has cracks in it and the black mats that are waterproof for slipping they're dirty and need to be vacuumed and then clean the menus need to be wiped down the AC vents need to be cleaned because they're dirty and black and full of wet cobwebs their ketchup bottles need to be refilled. This was a spot that offered burgers, hot sandwiches, chicken tenders, and milkshakes. Ordering was done at the counter. There were plenty of tables to sit at. Our order was large, but the food came out in a timely manner. I had a regular double cheeseburger ($6.95). It came with lettuce and tomatoes I believe. It was solid. It was what one expects at a place like this. The meat to bread ratio was ideal as well. The fries were okay, hot, but not seasoned too much. The onion rings were the preferred choice as they were crispy and had a good ratio of breading to onion. I also had some grilled cheese along with chicken fingers. The grilled cheese was standard while the chicken fingers were not bad either. It was odd that the chicken fingers came with gravy as that was very plain. BBQ sauce was needed for the chicken. For dessert, I had some of the vanilla and chocolate milkshakes. They were very thick and creamy. I would prefer a milkshake to be a little less thick, but it was not that big of a deal as it was creamy like I mentioned. They were both traditional, which I prefer when having a milkshake. For years and years, I've loved Dan's Hamburgers - specifically, their cheeseburgers and their curly fries. Although I've been hitting the location on North Lamar Blvd. more often (as recently as a couple weeks ago), I was in the vicinity of the one on Airport Blvd., where I hadn't eaten in three, maybe four, months, where a cheeseburger with curly fries beckoned me in. Inside, I found the counter staff were gone; there were things on the counter where there had been clear spaces for placing orders. A short, unfriendly woman told me tersely to have a seat and she'd be with me shortly. WTF?! Table service? At Dan's? I took a table, he brought me a menu, and I ordered, begrudgingly, because I was there and I really wanted a burger and curly fries. A tall man in white kitchen-worker garb, with his hands clasped behind his back - with the appearance and air of an orderly at a mental hospital - loomed nearby. He kept staring at me, so I looked back at him and made a gesture that signaled my annoyance with his unwarranted attention. He persisted, so I did it again. He then asked me, insincerely, "Are you okay?" I replied, "Just fine. How about you?" That seemed to deter his gaze for a while. However, he creeped me out by standing there, seeming to be waiting for an inmate to act-up so he could rush to restrain them. I got the impression that he and the waitress were husband-and-wife, and the new owners of the franchise, imposing their idea of how to operate a restaurant upon a Dan's; so out-of-touch (perhaps because they were foreigners) with how things are done around here. As I was just finishing-up the meal, the orderly came over and imposed himself on me, collecting my plate and silverware. I objected to his overbearing action, and he asked me, passive-aggressively, if I wanted the plate and silverware back. I replied, "I don't want to interact with you." This was one of the rare occasions when I've not left a tip for table service, due to a) my reasonable expectation of not having table service, and the obligation to leave a tip for it imposed upon me, b) the apparent new proprietors were such jerks, and c) because this Dan's, where I'd previously loved to eat, has been irrevocably ruined for me. If the Dan's on North Lamar gets bought-up by clueless foreigners and corrupted by table service, I'll stop eating there, as well, favoring the P. Terry's a few blocks up the street. read more

Love this local spot! I think it's a great value for the money. I usually get a regular cause that's more than enough for me, but my husband loves a double with bacon. Prices stay reasonable and the staff is so nice. Last night we had the best cashier, she seemed actually happy to be at work. As others mention, could it use an update inside? Maybe - But I would like to say that people calling it dirty is not the same thing to me. I think some paint and some new furniture would be great, but it also gives it character. 1st time here - we live in AZ. We all got a double burger different toppings- Delicious burgers and was hot! Fries done well and in fresh oil! Onion rings were excellent. Service was very fast! We are deducting for ambiance- Needs ceiling fixed, paint, and seats redone. Decor and interior needs quite a bit of maintenance. Tables are clean and well stocked. Unused Service area is an eyesore. Dan's offers an amazing, flavorful burger without the greasy mess. although i can't speak for their curly fries, their regular fries were just as good as the burger and served as the perfect counter part, also lacking the greasy mess while keeping flavor.
