The Mad Dog and Chopped Cheese Dog

The best hot dogs we've had in Austin. Counter service was quick. The chopped cheese was delicious and just rich enough, not overly greasy. The Mad Dog had more tang to it with the sriracha and ketchup. The curry ketchup felt like rightly so the star of the show. I think what makes Mad Dogs great is the hot dog and bun are neutral to really let the toppings shine. Looking forward to going back!

We were a little confused at first bc the building is somewhat off to the side but it is across from crystal works and Enfield nails in a small stand alone building. The interior is very casual and there is a large menu on the wall when you walk in. Then the counter has a screen for you to self place and order. The order process does ask for a tip at the end which is always odd to me when the process is self order. We were the only people in the restaurant for a few minutes and it still took quite a while for the food to come out. After about 30 minutes, or more, I asked if they had received our order and they said "oh yes sorry it's right here" which was pretty odd. Their self titled "Mad dog" is a pretty obvious knock off of yo-yos from Houston and ditty dog. It did not live up to our expectations. The dog comes with a curry ketchup which definitely had more curry flavor than ketchup. Even with the combination of cream cheese, crunchy onion, and the sauces, the hot dog only tastes like curry. I also ordered a smash burger which definitely had the look and taste of a classic smash burger but there were no onions. My friend's order also had no onions so I'm assuming they ran out? The french fries were a little cold but had a great crunch still. I didn't see any ketchup available for the fries but I thankfully used my friends smash sauce. I had high hopes for this place but the food, service, and experience overall was quite subpar.

Ordered two elote dogs on uber eats and got whatever this is. I called into the store and it immediately hung up on me. Fantastic customer service. (sarcasm)

Great specialty dogs, good late night place with friendly employees. The fries were fried to perfection and a perfect combination with the hot dogs. The seating is upstairs on a rooftop with plenty of space.

This is not your typical hotdog or smothered fries. Headed to one place but ended up at mad dogs after my boyfriend decided that he wanted a hotdog. He searched and search online and came upon Mad dogs, which had a great review and we are just here to add to it. The experience was simple and yet amazing. The flavor was imp Actable and each bite was super yummy. He ordered the hotdog and I ordered the Smashburger fries. When you get food from restaurants, do you want to get it for the value of a dollar they are asking. They are not shy of giving you what you need for the cost of our food. There was very little interaction with the staffing, but they were present and available to assist with any questions. I love to see that this small business has joined with another business which is called midnight snack. The snacks look amazing and to die for. We were so full from mad dog we didn't order from midnight snack, but we are excited to know that they are open late. I'm sure one of these nights.

How do they make their chicken that tender and juicy?? Also, why are the potato salad and mac n cheese the best I've ever had?? Our total came out to be ~$26, without tip. 5/5 Overall, great service, great food, and great experience! Parking is a bit hard since it's in downtown, but there is a parking garage across from the restaurant and it's only $5 for 0-2 hours, which I think is the best you can find. We also came on a Saturday around 2:30 pm. We got our food pretty quick so you can really just eat for 30 minutes and walk around downtown for a good 1.5 hours before coming back and leaving. We will definitely be back!

THIS PLACE IS LEGIT…read more I was a bit hesitant to visit Gus's because I've seen both positive and negative reviews, and didn't know who to trust. So I took some of the criticism (sides suck EXCEPT for collard greens and okra) into consideration for my order. I arrived at opening, and the restaurant already had a few customers. I got the 3-piece dark meat meal (15.25), and a refillable drink ($3 but you can keep the cup). My meal was ready in under 10 minutes, and could see that everything was freshly made. The hue on the chicken was beautiful --- it's not just a crust, that's some batter on Gus's chicken! The okra and the collards passed the test (DELICIOUS), and I was hoping for the chicken to be as "world famous" as I've heard. THE CHICKEN DID NOT DISAPPOINT. The crunch was undeniable, the slight heat from the marinade was present, and overall flavor was simply...pleasurable. My rule for chicken? Always get the dark meat. I took my souvenir cup with me, but I can finally say I tried Gus's World Famous Fried Chicken --- and it is world famous for good reason!

The food is incredible, the atmosphere is welcoming, and the staff truly make this place special. Huge shoutout to amazing team members Ariel and Emily for being so warm and kind. The chef even made our pup Zoloft a pup cup today, which was such a sweet gesture. The lovely woman who helped us during our last visit also gave Zoloft a pup cup, so they've consistently shown kindness to our little family. They even gave complimentary vegan cookies to guests when we arrived (not sure if it was a special promotion, but such a thoughtful touch!). And the ice cream... WOW. Made with lentils, and honestly some of the best ice cream we've ever had--rich, creamy, and unforgettable. Friendly staff, delicious food, thoughtful service, and creative plant-based treats. Mission Burger is a gem in Austin, and we'll absolutely be back again whenever we return to Austin

Perfect spot for late-night tacos!…read more The best part is that they have great vegetarian options, including both paneer and tofu tacos, and both are absolutely delicious. It's not always easy to find flavorful vegetarian tacos, so this place was a pleasant surprise. I loved it so much that I ended up visiting twice during my two-day trip to Austin. Sixth Street's neon and noise are basically next door, the Capitol sits up the hill, and the whole area is packed with people, bars, and that classic Austin mix of polished downtown hustle and late-night chaos. Velvet Taco is pure counter-service: you walk right up, order at the register, and then grab a seat. There's plenty of seating, so even with a couple of kids in tow it was no problem finding a spot. The place leans hard into what can only be called white-people tacos--soft, sad flour tortillas that taste like they came straight out of a grocery-store package, loaded with every wild creation the kitchen can invent. Global mashups, brunch hybrids, burger impostors, the works. No one is pretending these are the real deal. I went for the chicken-and-waffles taco, which was actually built on a thin, real waffle instead of a tortilla. Surprisingly good--crispy, a little sweet, chicken holding its own. The burger taco tasted exactly like a cheeseburger that had wandered into a tortilla and decided to stay. We also tried the shrimp taco (fine), one daughter got the kids' chicken taco (perfectly kid-level), and the other ordered the chicken tikka (spicy, saucy, and very much in the "why is this on a tortilla?" category). Everything was okay. Comparable to Torchy's in that same creative-American-taco lane. If you're looking for a true Mexican taco, stay far away. But if you just want to play around with some decent flavors on a cheap flour store-bought tortilla while sitting in the middle of downtown Austin, this is your spot. Not my favorite. Glad I tried it. Won't be back.
