The Hot Dog King was the best idea for a party. Sonny came down and cooked hotdogs for our party for 2 hours and took care of the clean-up. I will definitely be calling him again The guests were floored by his hotdogs! Came with all the fixings and it was phenomenal!! They were super responsive and got everything set-up for us. It was really easy. We had 50 guests and we ordered 72 hot dogs of various kinds. We paid $650 including the transportation fee and gave the man a tip because the service was so top notch! Great stuff. Hot Dog King was at the BHV Austin Too 1 year anniversary party at 8613 Burnet Rd. BHV is a luxury dog boarding and daycare facility, so having the king there was perfect! I'm just not a real big fan of hot dogs. In fact, I think the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest every Fourth of July is absolutely revolting, if not horrifically disgusting, for more reasons than the number of hot dogs stagnating in the contestant's colons. Oh, I'm not ungracious, I congratulate the winner and all the contestants, and I'm sure their parents are very proud. What I am interested in is the vegan/veggie hot dog, and not for the philosophical reasons of it being meatless, but from the marketing concept of "Do we make this thing taste like a hot dog, or can it just look like one?" I also enjoy the irony of why meatless products should even resemble or taste like meat at all, but that's a whole other debate. The point is the Hot Dog King makes an interesting vegan dog, but you won't confuse it with your typical All-American weenie. I actually thought it tasted like pizza, maybe it was the oregano; it's apparently based on mushrooms and sun-dried tomatoes. Be that as it may, whatever taste expectations I may have had were more than compensated with my perception I was eating something at least semi-nutritious and healthy for me - I have no idea if it's true or not, but sometimes perception is reality. The Hot Dog King is a trailer which I assume does the bar circuit at night, I found it working a Saturday morning outdoor car show. Cool. There were eight kinds of dogs on the menu - the wild boar seemed interesting - the guy working it was nice enough and I assume the "King," and I was impressed with his help-yourself condiment selections along the entire side of the trailer, especially the sauerkraut and sriracha. The most expensive items were $5, and I think any of them would be good eats. For the $4 Vegan Dog, I know it's a veggie bang for the buck. read more

These are some tasty dogs on a hoagie style bun (or maybe that was just my Chicago-style hot dog). Basically you get a hot dog, a bun and you choose if you want onions or not. From there, you can get as much of the assortment of condiments that you want (Sauerkraut, pickles hot mustard and spicy Asian sauce for me please). The woman who served us was friendly and had a lot to talk about (if you're willing to engage in a conversation with her). I love the turkey dog with grilled onions, please get the onions, you will not regret it, the buns are warm and soft and you have a big choice of condiments you can choose from. Word to the impatient, this hot dog cart is no secret people know its Delicious so you are going to have to wait in line for a while. Maybe it was because I'd been drinking for a few hours. Maybe it was because I'd just walked off the Barbarella dance floor, coated in a glistening sheen of sweat that let everyone know I did indeed just dance my booty off. The lady working this past Saturday night was seriously so friendly - she talked about books with me while she cooked the sausage and my friend went to get his card. Funny story about that, by the way - I asked my friend if he closed his tab. "Yeah, I closed it." I was slightly confused as I didn't see him close it out, but maybe he ninja closed it sometime while I wasn't paying attention? Moment of truth when he has to pay for his sausage - he forgot to close his tab! Time to make a mad dash back to Barbarella and close it out. He was only gone for a couple of minutes, but that was more than enough time to recommend different authors to check out. Then there was the glorious jalapeño cheese sausage. The way it is cut makes it so easy to eat and the bun is nicely toasted. Add a drizzle of mustard and a little relish and mmmhhhmm call the fellas, cuz that's a tasty weiner right there. I wish this place was around more. I'm always excited when I see that the Hot Dog King has set up his dais of deliciousness right next to Red Eyed Fly. And why? Because they have the BEST veggie dog in town. I'm not kidding. I'm not hyperbolizing. I'm just speakin the plain truth. They also have an outstanding selection of toppings and sauces to enhance your hot dog experience. This is important, as hot dogs are meant as vessels for toppings, y'know. Holy hot damn! I never would've discovered this place if I hadn't attended Yelp's Thriller Throwdown at the Elysium. So I was a little tipsy when I stumbled upon this place, but this easily was the best hot dog I've ever had! The dog itself was split in half and grilled, the onions grilled to perfection, the bun like none other I've had, and all the jalapenos, pickles, banana peppers and mustard I could heap on. Wow. The lady working behind the counter is fantastic, fast and friendly. I heart you Hot Dog King lady!!! Only suggestion... The King should be getting 5 stars, but there is one problem. Being the only place within the Austin city limits that I have found (so far) that proudly serves Vienna Beef dogs, they don't make a proper Chicago hot dog, AND on top of that.... Ketchup does not belong on a hot dog. Sorry, but to quote "The Bad News Bears" "The only people who put ketchup on hot dogs are mental patients and Texans." But seriously... I'm rather indifferent to hot dogs. I don't hold any special love for them, nor any general dislike. One thing hot dogs are great for is when you've been drinking. A lot. For whatever reason, there's a direct correlation between alcohol consumption and hotdog deliciousness. Fortunately, King Sonny knows this, and is parked in prime location to capitalize on it. The woman who runs this trailer is hilarious. She'll come up with some joke with ridiculous innuendo while she cooks your "wiener." Toppings are good. There are something like 15 options on the board, ranging from the normal sized "puppy dog" to giant sides of pork wedged in 6-pound buns. The fixins are all there; he's got grilled onions and peppers on demand, a wide variety of ketchups, relishes, kraut, cheese, hot sauce, onions, you name it. For my first review on Yelp, it's gotta be Hot Dog King. I am a vegetarian and obsessed with these veggie dogs. Best I've ever had, anywhere (so far). The cheese sauce is seriously divine. I always find that the pickles are well stocked and seem fresher than one would expect considering circumstances. My friends and I have gotten in the habit of stopping for these dogs at the end (or even beginning) of a night out in East Downtown. While hanging out at the bars/venues in the neighborhood, I'm frequently distracted by my excitement for the veggie dog to come. The Hot Dog Queen is nice and appreciative of politeness and tips. My boyfriend and I are very curious about how profitable this business is for their family. My request is to get the cheese sauce going during SXSW this year at the remote cart set up in front of Elysium/Beerland. Last year The Hot Dog Prince informed me they did not have it there. The King, the name that his biography promotes, knows just how to cater to folks who have a pit in their stomach, sloshing with not much more than "empty carbs." Living in Austin for 7 years, I haven't heard that term in recent time. The Junkyard dog maintains the straight and narrow of all that is hot dog. The canvas is a brat, your oyster, per se. Open to all sorts of adornments, from onion to ketchup and mustard (does anyone still do the good one-two?), this classic is an affordable way to get some grub down the hatch. I had the HDK truck out at a wine club event, but I know that he kills it downtown at his home base. When I'm wandering through downtown with friends after a night of music and drinks in search of late night food, I love finding this place! Being veg, there are lots of trailers but few where I can eat. Hot Dog King makes it so easy- veggie dog on a bun with loads of toppings and I'm good to go! The only reason I give 4 instead of 5 is that several times, my Tofurkey dog (yep, they use Tofurkey italian sausage) has been dry. Best veggie dog I've ever had. An essential place to stop at when coming to Austin.

I love the Hot Dog King. I love the Hot Dog King so much that I will go out on a night I'd rather stay in because I want a hot dog. Only their hot dog. The veggie dog. I hate veggie dogs generally, I can do veggie corn dogs, but regular veggie dogs are rubbery and don't taste at all like a hot dog. Theirs is the Italian sausage variety, big and full of sun dried tomato goodness, grilled up with onions and PICKLES. I love pickles, all kinds of pickles, pickles that aren't even cucumbers (I call anything pickled a pickle, as in many Asian cultures and Latin as well), so I love me some vinegary options. The bun is always nice and toasty, they give you ample foil for the pickles to fall off on (which they do, so I always get a LOT), and my meaty friends like the venison dog and other non pork options they offer for a little variety. They always look as tasty as mine, but a lot of my meat eating friends get the veggie dog cause it is just that good. Anyway, the most important thing is the lady that runs this place. She is my favorite! She knows all the regulars and shooed some very intoxicated man out of our way by name last time as he was stumbling in front of the trailer, in a motherly kind of "get your food and go to bed, sweetie" kind of way. She is always so nice, and anyone who doesn't tip her has no good bones in their body. And for the record, it's not just veggie, it's vegan, made from portabella mushrooms and sun-dried tomatoes.
