Twenty years ago, Hill-Bert's Burgers was one of my burger places. Solid burgers. Good fries. No nonsense. So when I found myself near the Cameron Road location recently, nostalgia took the wheel and I thought, What the heck? I'm getting a burger and fries. I was excited. Like, mouth-watering-while-waiting-in-line with anticipation! (if you didn't read that last word with a Dr. Frank-N-Furter vibe, who even are you?!) I pulled up, placed my order, and waited patiently -- happily, even -- because waiting usually means things are being cooked fresh. I paid, waited a bit more, and when my food was handed to me, the bag was hot. Promising! I drove home already mentally composing a happy little reunion speech. Then I opened the burger. ...uhmmm. What?! This was not the burger I remember. At all. The flavor just wasn't there. Flat. Forgettable. Sad. Surely the fries would save it, right? Friends... no. The fries tasted like an old bag of forgotten freezer fries, discovered during a deep clean, briefly tossed into the fryer, and handed to an unsuspecting customer whose only crime was believing in crispy, fresh potatoes. I was that victim, y'all. And look -- I understand that places change. Times change. Austin changes (painfully). But this felt less like evolution and more like the soul quietly slipping out the back door. Hill-Bert's, like so much of the Austin I loved, has left the building. I wanted this to be a joyful reunion. Instead, it was a reminder that sometimes it's okay to let good memories stay memories. read more

Old Austin burger joint with a retro feel. Burgers and food overall is average. Cheeseburger cheese was just American pre-sliced cheese that you get at any grocery store. Lettis was fresh. No tomatoe on my burger and nearly no onion nor mayonnaise. Onion rings were good. Wings only come in Buffalo sauce. Now the prices are fair based on all that. Whataburger, inn-out, Dan's burgers are so much better. Sorry. The staff are very sweet. read more

Wish I had tried this place sooner. It is truly an Austin icon, and I hope they're around forever! I tried the wings and rings combo. They warned that the wings were going to be smaller, but they were the whole wing and very tender, tasty, yummy. They have their own house sauce, and it had a good kick and flavor. The onion rings were perfectly breaded. The service was wonderful and quick. No rudeness, just a quick and decent meal despite it being late in the day. There's plenty of parking, a nearby bustop, and patio seats. Sure, it's got an older building vibe, but you can see it's a great place to meet up with folks for a quick and decent meal at prices that are not pretentious. Of course we'll be back because now I want to try their whole menu. read more

Pretty decent old-timey hamburger joint. The regular cheeseburger was really good, but the chicken fried burger leaked a bunch of indiscriminate liquid presumably from being fried while frozen but I can't say for sure. The service is traditional fast food counter service and they were reasonably quick. Bathroom management needs work (see video). Shake was really good this and the fries were the 5 star items from the trip. The regular burger was 3.75 stars and the cheese sticks themselves could use a little more stretch and a better sauce but were well-cooked. I'd come back for the shakes when I'm in the mood for sure though. read more

I used to get lunch at least once a week from the old Hill-bert's location, when I worked off Medical Parkway. So I was super excited when I moved into some apartments just around the corner from their current location on Cameron Rd. My all-time favorite burger was in reach again...or so I thought. Unfortunately, times have changed, and so has Hill-bert's. I've placed so many orders and been served so much disappointment that I've now given up. It's not that the food is bad; it's that the employees can't be bothered to care what their customers actually order. All I'm asking for is no mayo. It really shouldn't be that difficult. But either they're part of some Big Mayo conspiracy, or they just don't care at all, and I'm leaning toward the latter. If it was just one order, it would be a mistake. But they do it over and over and over again. I actually stopped ordering from Hill-bert's a couple of years ago precisely because of how many times they screwed up my orders, but I recently had one hell of a craving and thought surely they could get my order right this time, couldn't they? NOPE! Stupid me for thinking something as cryptic as "NO MAYO!" would make sense to them. So that's it, I guess. After 25 years of Hill-bert's burgers, I'm done. read more

I'm honestly shocked to my core that Hill-Bert's only has 3.6 stars on Yelp. The prices are low, the service is friendly, and there's plenty of seating in a clean spacious area. Firstly, skip the fries they're golden and crispy but there's not a speck of seasoning. It's the only reason I gave 4 instead of 5 stars. The rest of the food is soooo good! I ordered a veggie burger, and it was delicious. Hubs even liked the bite I gave him. He ordered a single with bacon and kept raving about how good it was. We then split an order of onion rings. This place has literally the best onion rings I've ever had in my life. I almost cried! Hubs loved them too. He said he can't wait to come back and try other items on the menu. I have no pictures to share because I can't ever wait to get home to eat these delicious burgers. They are made to order. Hot and fresh. The staff is so nice. Although one time they did forget these cheese on my cheeseburger. But every other time I've had them, it's been so darn good I forgave them. Hahaha. I love that I can just get a burger and not have to get a meal. I have not gone inside yet. I only ever order through the drive thru. One day I'll take a picture, maybe. read more

My first time here. I had never heard of them before. I love Dan's & Fran's and my favorite is Top Notch. Well this place falls in line with the iconic Austin burger joint. A great burger and killer onion rings. We went there for my birthday, coworkers birthday lunch and everyone had a great lunch. The sweet potato fries are definitely the best I have ever tasted. They are cooked perfectly, on the well done side. It brings out the sweetness in the potato. Coworkers had fish sandwich and veggie burger. Both said they were excellent. I'll definitely be back since this is just a short trip down 35 from the office. read more

I've had better. A good place to take kids when on a budget. An old rundown taco joint. Drinks are served over Sonic ice. The burgers are made well, with fresh ingredients on top. It's sad to say, but this restaurant is steady declining , from the poor customer service to the dirty atmosphere. When you walk in, beware of rats and roaches. The health department needs to visit. Within this last year I've noticed the staff do not clean up the eating area, and the food is not as good it once was. The staff is arrogant and rude as though they believe the community owes them and will be loyal to them because they have been around for a while.. I'm ashamed to admit I've eating here.. On top of that the owners made it clear that this is a family establishment and no matter how they act, it will be excused. All in all, we won't be going back. read more

I've been eating Hill-Bert's burgers since I was a kid and they've always been fresh and delicious! Stopped by earlier this week to get my usual: Double cheeseburger all the way everything on it, add mustard and heavy Mayo. Also ordered large onion rings and a large sweet tea. Everything was fresh! I like being able to come here and spend $10 to $12 on a lunch meal and when they hand you the to-go bag it has with some real heft to it. Double cheeseburger was awesome as usual, nice and juicy griddle-fried patties, fresh veggies and that delicious mayo, but I can't say enough about their onion rings! They are fresh and the batter is so tasty with almost a butter flavor to it. There aren't any other onion rings around Austin that taste like Hill-Bert's. Finally, the staff is so friendly!!! They've always been so appreciative of me as a customer and always as me to tell my family friends, which I do! Their location is a little obscure because it is off of the beaten path at the far South end of Cameron Rd. They are behind the Capital Plaza shopping center in an old-style, brick Taco Bell restaurant that still has the arches and the benches out front. Adds a lot of nostalgia to the place! Doesn't look like much, but I was needing dinner while waiting on a repair, so popped in for a quick burger. Ordered the double jalapeño burger with all the toppings, side order of a mix of fries and rings, and a chocolate shake. Burger and topping all fresh, and rather tasty, fries and rings crisp and not swimming in grease. Great homemade shake, hit the spot. Staff very responsive and nice, and although an older building it's kept clean. Definitely a place to go when you just want a good burger lunch or dinner. read more

Been awhile since I've been here. I usually go for their burgers because that's what they are known for. I hear a lot of hype about their wings so I decided to go last night. Honestly they were good but dang they are tiny to be nice. The customer service is amazing. The lady at the counter was very friendly and sociable. Hill-Bert's has been my best ATX burger secret for 30 years, and they've been around longer than that. JewBoy? Great. Casino El Camino? Classic burger, great jukebox. Odd Duck? Exceptional, with a price to match. I'd put Hill-Bert's burgers up there with any of them, and at a fraction of the price. Everything is fresh, from the beef to the veggies, and top quality. Most importantly, Hill-Bert's has cracked the code for great burger architecture. There's nothing fancy about it, but nobody does it like they do. Thick slices of ripe tomato and thick onion, fresh cut, and crispy lettuce are the perfect additions to what in my opinion is the perfect burger: Hill-Bert's double bacon cheeseburger. All on a bun that somehow stands up to this massive load. Personally, I also go for the pickled jalapenos. YMMV. It's not just the burgers. Their chicken-fried steak is a classic. The onion rings are as good as any I've had anywhere, and I've been to a lot of anywheres. You can't go wrong with anything on their old school marquis menu that's really old school, not trendy new made to look old school. Trust me on this, if you're visiting the ATX, and you're looking for a truly great burger, put this little joint off of the beaten path on your list. Fresh burgers, fries always hot, and crunchy pebble ice in sodas ... what's not to like about this place? The staff is super nice. My five-year-old spilled his drink, and one of the ladies on staff showed up immediately with a replacement drink and wouldn't let me clean up the spill. She mopped up and kept telling my son that accidents happen and he shouldn't think twice about it. Y'all, I've been addicted their wings for 12 years now. I always get the wings (medium) with blue cheese and ranch, with a large fry. My hubs loves everything on the menu (burgers, rings, even salad) But I keep coming back for their wings! They are fresh (can be tiny) but the sauce is legit. Over the years, I've eaten a lot of burgers at Hill-Bert's, even back to the days of their original location on Lamar then the move to 35th Street. Thanks to the changing tastes of Austin, this outpost on Cameron is the only location remaining. The great news is that Hill-Bert's still grills their burgers over a fire on a conveyor belt. (Old Austinites will also remember that Player's had the same contraption.) The burgers still taste great. They still serve a generous order of fries and the menu has a variety of good stuff. For what it's worth, I've still yet to try their wings because I can't get past their burgers. The only decision for me is fries or onion rings. And on a nostalgic note, this was the first place my Dad convinced me to try a chili cheeseburger. In short, it's a great place to eat. The prices are a bit higher than average, but well worth it for the friendly service and a remaining bit of old Austin in between food trucks and out of towners moving in. read more

We ordered Hill-Bert's via ChowNow back in January on a cold, wet day. So if you're gonna judge me for that, I won't argue with you. But the food and customer service we were provided were sub-par, to say the least. I ordered a hamburger with no bun "wrapped in lettuce, if possible" (was trying to stay trim for my February wedding), and a regular cheeseburger and fries for my now husband. After a few minutes of placing the order, I get a call from the cashier of Hill-Bert's saying that the owner made him call me to let me know that he's been getting a lot of calls asking for lettuce wrapped burgers and so he's decided to charge more for them. He told me it would cost an additional $.59 (this might not be 100% accurate, but it was definitely somewhere between fifty cents and a dollar) to not have a bun and have it wrapped in lettuce instead. He took my credit card over the phone and charged me separately for it. At first, I laughed because I thought it was a joke... but then he was obviously serious, so I paid the man. I figured, hey, maybe they're really good at lettuce wrapping burgers and it'll be my favorite carb free burger! HAHAHAHA. Nope. They put more effort into calling me back to charge me extra than they did "wrapping" my burger. As for the rest, we were also so underwhelmed. My husband LOVES burgers, especially the more simple chargrilled ones, and not so much the gourmet varieties. I thought that's what we were getting. These burger patties were like those rubbery things we used to get back in grade school. The fries were nothing to write home about either. But at the end of the day, I can't get over the extra call that was made to me to charge me MORE for the saddest attempt at a burger there's ever been. That's just bad business. read more
