Came in with a friend who wanted to try this place. Quaint inside and nothing fancy. Mixture of tables and's booths inside with metal picnic tables outside along side the kids play area. Parking was tight as there aren't many spots and the building is shared with an Amy's ice cream. I got the 3 sliders along with onion rings and's then had to try the mini corn dogs. The sliders gave a great introduction to their various burgers and all well good. Service was good prompt and friendly. Food came out fast and fresh. Today was National Hamburger Day so i went to a Phil's Ice House for the first time ever ever ever. For 50% ($6.40 total) I got 2 sliders, mixed fries, and a drink! What a steal! The first slider I got was The 78704 with Pepper Jack cheese, grilled onions, avocado, jalapeños, and chipotle mayo. Sadly the sliders dont come with the right kind of bun (jalapeño cheese bun) cause the slider buns are a bit plain and very doughy feeling. Otherwise the burger was pretty good. The second slider I got was The 78750 which was swiss cheese, fried onion rings, and bacon on a the same crappy bun (instead of sourdough bun it usually has). That one i saved for later and it reheated really well actually and I enjoyed it for dinner. Tasted like a great traditional bar burger (but small cause it was the slider version). Both the regular and sweet potato fries were delicious and even reheated very well in the oven to stay crispy. They have one of favorite soda Doppelgänger and the rest of the Maine Root sodas made from pure cane sugar! read more

When we're in the mood for a burger, we usually go to Phil's. They make great burgers and, of course, there's Amy's ice cream for dessert! I like to get the two or three mini-burger basket because I hate to have to choose just one burger. My favorite is the Rosedale, because I love BBQ sauce and cheddar on any burger. I like to add jalapenos, too. The Crestview (chili burger) and Travis Heights (Swiss cheese, grilled onion, and grilled mushrooms) are also excellent. The toasted sourdough buns are delicious, soft and kind of sweet. The fries are also excellent. I'm generally not a big fan of sweet potato fries because they aren't very crisp. Phil's are excellent, still not super crispy but really good. Normal fries are also excellent. Of course, this Phil's is not just about burgers but also about Amy's. Nothing like some great ice cream after some great burgers. I lean towards a tiny strawberry with rainbow sprinkles as my go-to. Our kids are grown up so I like that Phil's is a real neighborhood family place where we can see all the kids playing on the playground. All in all, not a thing to complain about at Phil's. We love Phil's. Last day of school ice cream dinner which always morphs into actual food, just after the ice cream. BUT: recently some menu changes have been made and as my 12-year-old put it so eloquently: "you might as well just serve pigs-in-a-blanket." I'm often in a mood for burgers and decided to give Phil's a try based on some of the other reviews on Yelp. The restaurant is in an industrial looking building with a clean and bright interior. The menu has quite the variety of burgers and other sandwiches. I settled on the Jollyville Burger, with bacon, fried egg, and cheese surrounded by two slices of Texas toast. I opted to try out the fried green beans and I have to say that I was very impressed with how tasty they were. Hot and crisp and not at all greasy, they were a big highlight of the meal. The burger was cooked as I liked (medium rare) although the egg was a bit overdone (I like the yolk to ooze out). The bar here has a wide selection of craft beers so you won't go thirsty at all. As you can see, phone did not eat first. I had to take a bit of my slider before I remembered to take a pic. I've been here a few times and it has gotten better. The buns are like pillows and have a slight sweetness to them which is ideal. These are some solid burgers in town that come with either sweet potato or regular fries(or a mix). They have outdoor seating here and share it with the neighboring Amy's ice cream if you're considering bringing your dog. Darn! I really love Phil's Icehouse, however the last two online takeaway orders I've done have really disappointed me. They wrap the burgers in paper, plus additional wrap, and I think when they wrap it, the burger is so warm that it melts INTO the paper. Both takeaway orders I've done, both the top and bottom of the burger bun sticks to the paper and I end up having to eat the insides on a plate with a fork basically. I think something like foil would be better. Such a drag! The solution to this is don't get your Phil's on takeaway and just eat it there. Otherwise, the paper will be eating half your meal for you. read more

I've never written a Yelp review before, but I had to for this place because I am SHOOK. As someone who's gluten-free, I usually brace myself for sad, crumbly buns.. but this burger? Unreal. The bun was so soft and held together perfectly. I even had to double check it was actually gluten-free!! I've been here a couple of times in the past week and the air conditioning in the place is non-existent.. Dang ole place was in the high 80s the entire time we were sitting there. Poor staff up front was dying and I cant even fathom what the kitchen must be feeling... Crimeny! Staff told us both times they were told someone was coming out to fix it but apparently they're still not doing anything about it. Seems pretty lazy that a company with that much money can't seem to keep the basics up and going... The food is fine but I'm not looking to eat a messy burger in a dry sauna that's for certain. It's a real shame cause this place is an institution in this town but if feels like the lunatics are running the asylum as far as upper management is concerned... Me and my family visited Phil's today (2/27) and everything was great, the food was very tasty and good for the price, the two young gentlemen at the front were very helpful, and the playground was great for the kids. The only thing that was very frustrating and honestly disgusting was when I went to use the restroom, I saw a kid probably in middle school go in before me and when I went in the toilet was clogged with paper towels and pee. Been here a few times now because I really want to like this place. There's a playscape in the back along with ice cream so it makes it a really convenient place to bring the kiddo. But it's just not doing it for me. To start with the positives - I really really like the meat here. I find it to be of good quality and I like the taste a lot when eaten right away*. The regular fries are approved by the kiddo. The negatives - none of us like the bread, it's just not doing it for us. All the various burgers we have tried has all been very mediocre is flavor. Whether it's the jalapeno cheese bun, the chilli, the seasonings, every variation has been bland. The burgers are pretty pricey for what you get. The menu is just super confusing. Last time our fries came out as sweet potato fries. I guess you have to clarify regular fries or something? Anyway, I do not like sweet potato fries at all. The meat dries up really fast and gets hard if not eaten really quickly. This makes it hard for the kiddo to eat. So yea, I really wish the burgers were better tasting and less pricey cuz the location and playscape is really great but after 4 visits, I think this is just not the place for us. read more

I started out going to Phil's years ago when my kids were small as they have a nice kids playground and kids menu. My kids are in their teens now and we still go to and love Phil's. '78704 burger' is still the best burger I have had in Austin. Buns are great, service is always consistently on point, they have some good local draft beers. Amy's ice cream in same building to boot. I LOVE Phil's Icehouse. The "violet crown" is my most favorite burger in Austin. I'll go to any of the locations, but there's something about the Burnet location that I extra love. The service is always warm and kind - I felt bad that the a/c was out in the kitchen/register area when I went yesterday. It was super hot in there - and they were still so kind, lol. But I felt that heat (and I'm the kind that loves to sit outside on a hot day). I felt bad for the staff. WOW! I'm typically not a burger person but THIS burger is incredible! I could rave about it for days. I got the Veggie Burger patty and built my own burger - I love the customizability of this option as I'm a picky eater. The patty tasted oniony and chickpea-y and was heart and light. The bun, I got the sourdough, really sold me on this burger - It was slightly sweet but very moist and airy and absolutely incredible. Also I love that you have the option to get mixed fries as a side - I got a mix of regular and sweet potato - but fries were hot and crispy yet soft in the middle. Plus the staff are so nice and the seating, both indoor and outdoor, are plentiful and fun. Definitely would recommend to anyone!! read more

Where to start with this place. It's a hole in the wall with potential for some amazing burgers and fries. So many options available painted in big fun letters on the wall. My husband and I ordered our food and while ordering the server took her hat off and hit a fly on the counter and killed it, put her hat back on and threw the fly away with a napkin. Ok - flies are gross - nice hit, good for her. We walk into the dining area and my husband sits down and the table and chairs he picks are disgusting. So I say let's take another one. I wanted to vomit. The amount of food and dirt in the cracks of the bench are DISGUSTING. I wipe the table enough so when our food comes we aren't eating on a filthy table. My burger is ok, probably a little better than McDonalds but hard to tell because of the amount of toppings on it which I picked so I don't mind. My husband has a trio and can't even eat a single one. He says they are absolutely gross and can't eat them. As I'm eating and looking around I see nothing but filth and lose my appetite and we leave. This place needs a complete overhaul cleaning. I cannot imagine how the score posted here is accurate. I love that the Hawaiian rolls bring some sweetness to the burger, the the avocado and jalapeños bring the kick and creaminess you need to the patty and cheese. The chipotle mayo and sweet potato fry combination is wonderful. The burger is definitely pretty greasy so this couldn't be an every day meal, but I'm pretty impressed by how good it is. The BLT had bacon exploding out of it and tons of fresh vegetables.  The bread was toasted, with a wonderful buttery flavor--and I found the butter ended up on my hands! Phil's is our longtime local burger joint and got us through the pandemic haha. Their burgers are always well made and the sweetness of their thick pillowy hamburger buns really help to make the burger what it is. It's very predictable and doesn't disappoint. We typicallly get the Rosedale, the Violet Crown, or the 78750. You get the choice of regular fries and/or sweet potato fries--very rarely are they soggy but typically seasoned well with a great crisp. Their food is a geeat value for the price. One of the best burger spots in Austin in my opinion. The spot is very diner-like, but just a small counter where you can order your food and an adjacent room where you can sit and eat.
