Me and my daughter stopped by on our way back from an appointment. I told her some time that we needed to drive around to everywhere Dazed & Confused was filmed and surprisingly we stopped by here. We took photos while waiting for our food, once our food came out we went back to the car and ate. I didn't take any photos b/c we were starving that day. Top Notch is an Austin historic institution where made famous from the movie 'Dazed and Confused' but has that old 1950s drive up eatery. Nothing much has been changed with the fun decor. I ordered the Grilled Chicken Breast Sandwich and a drink. It's a classic place but the food quality is average. I'll return to give it another try with a different menu option. Alright, alright, alright... just like the classic movie filmed here, Too Notch is an Austin classic! From the sign to the car hop parking. What a fun place to eat and visit with friends. The food is ordered at the counter or from your car window!! The staff are so friendly and there is music playing while you consume some of the best burgers Austin has to offer. The ambiance is fun, fresh and classic. The restaurant is clean and has tables and booths. We had burgers and fries and wished them down with sweet tea. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu ! This was where they filmed some of Dazed and Confused with Matthew Mcconaughey. It's not bad, but it's not good. You're paying diner prices for fast food quality. There was something slightly off about each of the food items - the onion rings, the fries, the shakes, and the burgers. I wouldn't go out of my way for any of the food, but it's not the worst fast food I've had. Best part was they didn't upcharge to get onion rings as the side on the combo or for the milkshake instead of a soda. It was crowded on the first Saturday of the month (car show outside), but they packed in the tables inside, so there was a surprising number of places to sit, and we were able to get a table. read more

Dazed and Confused fans, burger fans, what a fun and yummy spot! Photo cutouts outside the door let you know you're at the right spot. You can drive in or dine in, and if we didn't have a rental of course we'd drive in! From the inside the decor is perfectly mid-century, and you get an up close view of movie props and memorabilia in an interpretive case but never mind that, it's burger time! The last charcoal grill in Austin had an excellent burger, and even sharing fries we were stuffed. If you aren't an early bird like me the viewing screens would definitely by fun with a jalapeño burger on the side. Local beer is served here, saving you a Dazed and Confused style beer run. Considering it was a first stop here in person, and we were staring at the movie stuff and souvenirs (which they also ship), the staff were patient with us, and our food was out in a reasonable amount of time. So I was in town for a meeting with some coworkers. We decided on a burger place and Top Notch was the winner. Checked it out on yelp and thought the burgers looked better than the other locations. It was a few miles from the hotel which was a plus. Drove up and immediately it looked like a old time burger hop location. No issues with that. walked in and the ambiance was chill location didn't have alot of people and saw they were cooking with charcoal which is always a plus for taste. Ordered a cheese burger with sweet tater fries. Food was decent can't saw anything bad about it a little pricey almost 15 dollars with no tip. It came out quick and you could taste the charging flavor. Which I liked. This place is a cute little drive up.It has great burgers. I had never been here before. My first experience and I'll tell you it was like having really good diner food and I could just relax inside of my car and eat it and throw my trash out. My husband and I enjoyed this nostalgic burger spot that reminded us of a fave that no longer exists in SA. They have drive up call boards and the inside decor was 70s era. They charbroil the burgers over the flame right behind the register. Burgers were simple but tasty because of the charbroil. Good fries and rings. Fried apple pie was a nice finish. If you're dining in, order at the counter then find a table and wait for your name to be called for order pickup. You can drive up and order from your car, or park and dine inside. It's a very old diner inside with some memorabilia, but nothing crazy. Order at the counter and take a seat and they'll call you when your order is ready. Burgers are obviously their main menu item, but they also have chicken tenders, fried seafood, and various sides. The shakes are great. Kids meals come in a cool paper car tray. Service is very quick and fast-food style. I love that they have fried okra! It's so good but hard to find around town. The burgers were decent - I'd definitely recommend a double to make it worth it. Onion rings and fries are just okay. Shakes are good. Way back in the 90s I had to take every out-of-town friend here to take a picture underneath the big sign because we all loved Dazed and Confused ;) But even if you didn't like that movie or have no idea what I'm talking about you should come here for the food!! Still one of the best in Austin, Top Notch is just an excellent local staple off Burnet. It's unpretentious, simple and does that incredibly well. And best of all, it's never changed. Flame broiled burgers, good fries, shakes and drinks. They have a bunch of other offerings (fried chicken, shrimp, hotdogs even) but I've never stayed from their classic cheeseburger. It's so simple yet perfect in that aspect, with a proper flame broiled taste. It's got a ton of character, and the only modification I've made in 10+ years of coming here now is to always order a side of special sauce for the fries (protip). Despite Austin's ever changing landscape Top Notch has stayed true to it's roots and it's a place I associate with comfort. Always recommended. read more

As a long-time fan of 1950s-style drive-in burger joints, I got very interested in checking this place out when several fellow drive-in fans suggested that I might appreciate the taste of their food. I decided to pay them a visit recently, and I'm sorry to say I'm not ready to drink their Kool-Aid :-( To sum it all up, Top Notch seems like nothing more than a glorified Checkers. Here's why: 1) The burger i ordered (and had such high hopes for) was barely AOK; probably no higher than a 3 on a scale of 1 to 10. 2) My burger was priced like something I might have ordered in a fancy restaurant with white-linen table cloths, not the non-exceptional fast-food that it is. 3) To add insult to injury, my sub-par food took almost 20 minutes to arrive after I'd ordered it... To be fair, while their burgers aren't anything to write home about, their onion rings are excellent. They're obviously fresh, well-battered, and fried to a perfect golden-brown. That said, the price tag is more like what you'd expect for a caviar appetizer than a fast-food side-order. My visit to Top Notch was a total disappointment - it's one and done for me. read more

TLDR: Appropriate name, give it a try. Good food with that old burger joint atmosphere going on. It has a bit of grime and stuffiness that you would expect. Staff is friendly, but service can be a little slow, so be prepared for that. I've seen other reviews comment on how long food takes to get out. They may have had other orders going on, but we really couldn't tell. The vibes are nice and the food was hot so we were ok with it. There's plenty of seating and I haven't seen Top Notch get crowded yet. The vegetarian options are limited, but they do exist. I enjoyed my veggie burger enough that I'd come back. I'm told the standard cheeseburger is delicious too. This isn't a place that I'd personally drive out of my way for, but it is a solid burger joint if you happen to be in the area. read more
