Let me be clear up front: the food was amazing. We had the fried chicken wings, catfish, sweet potatoes, cabbage, fried okra, black-eyed peas, and cornbread--and not one thing disappointed. The flavors were on point, well-seasoned, and cooked with care. I especially enjoyed the fried chicken, the cabbage, and those black-eyed peas--pure comfort food done right. I do want to share one note for transparency. The catfish entrée came with one piece of fish. It was a nice size (unfortunately I didn't grab a picture), but I'm used to receiving two fillets with a catfish entrée, so that part was a little disappointing for the price. We also ordered a catfish sandwich to go, and while this didn't take away from the overall experience, an additional piece of fish would better match expectations. Now let me give credit where it is absolutely due. The young woman working the front--Ariel (I believe it's spelled A-R-I-E-L, and I apologize if I missed that)--was phenomenal. She was cashier, to-go coordinator, and full-on mama energy, handling everything with grace, patience, and a great attitude. Even as it started getting busy (you know how folks roll in after church), she still made space for friendly chit-chat while keeping everything moving. Another thing I truly appreciated: the place was clean. And for me, that matters. Spotless, inviting, and the only thing in the air was the smell of that delicious food--no distractions, no off-putting odors, just good cooking doing what it's supposed to do. The food is served in to-go containers and everything is cooked to order, so expect a little bit of a wait--but honestly, who would mind waiting for food prepared this fresh? I live about 3.5/4 hours away but figured I'd make a weekend trip of it and try a few other places while in San Antonio. It was Sunday lunch time but it wasn't busy yet. Based on the Instagram I'd seen, I already knew what I wanted....Grilled Cheese meatloaf with Mac n cheese! My friend was set on oxtails. We were strongly recommended an appetizer of Soul Rolls so we agreed. Woooweeee! Everything was amazing...word are hard to give. Cooked with love for sure. So many robust flavors. You could tell hours of cooking went into building these flavor profiles. Oxtails were fall off the bone. Meatloaf had the most amazing flavor and the Mac n cheese was cheesy, soft, and buttery. Fries were good but would have set them over the top if they were homemade fries but hey, not complaining. The entire ride home all my friend and I did was rave over this place. Chicken fried steak, fried cheese, boneless pork chop, mashed potatoes, lettuce and tomato with special sauce. Gave a four because the bread did not hold up, way to much stuff on sandwich for this type of bread.
