Highly recommend this bean burger! It was scrumptious! The burger consists of a substantial meat patty topped with melted cheese, beans, and Fritos on a brioche bun. The vegetables were cut into chunky pieces and seasoned with a smoky flavor. The service was excellent, and the atmosphere is always enjoyable. Looking forward to my next visit!
Recommended to try MaMa's Cafe out. Such a cute place inside and decorated nice. Plenty of parking. Indoor and outdoor seating with outdoor having a water feature. We sat inside, staff was very friendly. We went for breakfast. But, lunch was available as well. I tried the avocado toast which was very good. The roasted tomatoes gave it a very nice flavor. Our daughter had country fried steak and hubby had pancakes. Both enjoyed their meal and the pancake was amazing!
The place is quaint but seating is a touch crowded especially when they are busy. The prices are a bit high and the food is alright. The cinnamon roll was dry and the shrimp and grits were far overpriced for the tiny portion I was served. The fried mushrooms were great though and a large portion for an appetizer! The service was good for how busy it was.
The chicken fried steak was really good and very flavorful. The waiter was so nice and funny. Very friendly. The place itself was cozy and cute. Definitely will go back to try more.
Can't resist the food & drinks here! Had brunch with a friend last week. The Huevos Hofbrau was so delicious and such a large portion. Now I'm back for HH again. You can't beat the food and service. I've always had such positive experiences at all the Lawton family owned restaurants! That's what keeps me coming back.
We visited Mama's Café on a Saturday around noon. When we arrived, we were greeted right away and informed that they seemed to be short-staffed. We were given the option of waiting about 15 minutes for a table or sitting in the bar area, so we chose one of the high-top tables in the bar. The café itself is very cute and has a charming atmosphere. The bar area has red neon lighting along the ceiling, which gives the room a distinctive glow. After ordering coffee and waters, we decided on the fried mushrooms, the meatloaf plate, and the Breakfast Pile. They never ended up refilling any of our drinks. The fried mushrooms came out first and were piping hot. They were served with both white gravy and ranch. The ranch was pretty tasty, but the mushrooms themselves were fairly bland and quite greasy. To be fair, deep-fried mushrooms aren't exactly a light dish, but I found myself adding salt to everything to bring out more flavor. For my entrée, I ordered the meatloaf with mashed potatoes and green beans. The meatloaf contained carrots, which was an interesting touch. The slices were very thick and firm, and honestly didn't resemble or taste like a traditional meatloaf. I asked for the gravy on the side and ended up dipping each bite into it, but the dish still wasn't my favorite. The green beans were the biggest miss for me. They had a mucky flavor that reminded me of mop water. The Breakfast Pile was decent enough: potatoes, sausage, eggs, and gravy layered together. Unfortunately, it also felt underseasoned and could have benefited from more flavor. The standout item of the entire meal was the biscuit with honey butter. They initially forgot to bring the honey butter, and I'm very glad we asked for it because it completely made the dish. The biscuit was warm, soft, and by far the most enjoyable thing we ate. Overall, Mama's Café has a cute atmosphere and friendly service despite being understaffed when we visited. However, most of the food felt underseasoned and lacked flavor. If you're looking for a cozy spot to sit and chat, it's worth a visit, but based on this meal, I probably would only come back if someone said it was their favorite restaurant and I try what they order
I came here for the first time on my birthday this past month 5/12! It was around 12pm, it was pretty full inside but we got a table for 4 no problem. We started off with a biscuit 8/10 it tasted like cornbread but I didn't ask, it was like a cornbread biscuit lol Then most of us had Chicken & Waffles with iced coffees (8.5/10) for the food. My partner got the Classic Breakfast (8/10) Food was filling and can't wait to be back. Our waiter was Pablo & he was very nice and helpful with menu
The food's okay, a little bit more expensive from how it used to be. My waitress accidentally cut me with a used steak knife and when I tried to tell her she just brushed it off like nothing happened despite me bleeding. Accidents happen, but I still have the scar on my arm (this was last week) lol. Weird.
Ode been here years ago and totally forgot about it. I'm glad I came back after almost 10 years! The deviled eggs and mushrooms were everything!!! Very good home cooked meals.

My Catfish plate was good, but I felt cheated on the collards because it was literally 2 fork-fulls and that was it, which was disappointing because they were good, though a bit spicy & the greens/smoked meat/peppers ratio was imbalanced. I didn't hear any major concerns, so she enjoyed her chicken plate. But, the star of the night for me was definitely the Deviled Eggs. I'd never had them fried...and WOW!-very different, but tasty!!! The yolk was not overly battered & the pork rind on top was a nice touch-however, it could've used some type of sauce on the side to add more flavor to the bite. Though it was a busy Friday dinner rush, our waiter was attentive, which is always nice.
I have never been to a restaurant with so much personality! As you enter the restaurant, you see a sign that states, "Welcome Home !" Love that... As you walk in you experience an explosion of captivation. My eyes were drawn to the meticulously constructed American and Texas flags. Wow!!! They're huge and affixed to the ceiling. This restaurant is large and exceedingly interesting. One of the rooms has a huge mosaic of Willie Nelson...beautifull and striking! They have another room with an assortment of donated boots. So intriguing...Then the collections...license plates, beer cans, pictures, hats, decorative metal saddles...I have not had a morsel of food and I'm totally enamored. Met my brother for breakfast. You might be asking why I'm having breakfast in a place that is heavy carnivore given I'm doing the Daniel fast. Well, my brother insisted. Smile. I vaguely recall him saying something like I'm not eating that vegan stuff . Needless to say, he's not pro vegan. Sigh. It is important to note, ample free parking is available. Our server, Xocchil was southern hospitality friendly. She was so bubbly, which set the pace for the remainder of our meal. She epitomized excellent service!!! Both our meals were quite delicious. My brother had Belgian waffles, scrambled eggs with American cheese (he said he can rarely find this option) and bacon. I had potatoes and grits. We were happy as little larks!!! Definitely a "go to" in San Antonio, TX.
We got fried green tomatoes, avocado melt, a crispy chicken sandwich, onion rings and fries and everything was GF and so good!

I stopped in around 2:30 on a Tuesday afternoon, just after the holidays, so it was a slower period. Even then, the food came out quickly and fresh, which mattered since I was on a tight timeline with a flight to catch. This is exactly the kind of place you want when you need a great meal without stress, right near the airport. Pablo took care of me, and he absolutely made the experience. Funny, quick-witted, and genuinely engaging, he brought that rare human connection that turns a meal into a memory. A brief but meaningful conversation, attentive service, and great timing throughout. It's clear he enjoys what he does, and it shows. The food was excellent. I went with a Texas staple, chicken fried steak, and it didn't disappoint. Crispy, well-seasoned, and satisfying, exactly what you hope for when ordering it in Texas. The real standout for me, though, was the collard greens. As someone from North Carolina, I don't say this lightly, these were the best collards I've had outside of NC. Perfectly cooked, full of flavor, with a subtle Hispanic flair and just a touch of spice that elevated them without overpowering the dish. Comfort food done right, friendly service, and an easy in-and-out location near the airport make this an easy recommendation. Mama's isn't trying to be trendy, it's just trying to be good, and that's exactly what it is. Everything is made in house, a real bonus. Five stars, and I'll absolutely be back next time I'm flying through San Antonio.
This place has been here a long while, and to be honest, I did not even know they served breakfast. :0 I always thought of this as the restaurant that introduced fried mushrooms to San Antonio, but my son was visiting so we decided to try it. It was my first time trying Mama's Cafe, which I didn't realize is literally a hop and a skip away from me :) ! I met a friend here yesterday for Sunday brunch. Luckily, we made reservations prior to the weekend so that we could get seated right away on a busy Sunday! I ordered "A Helluva Mess," and chose eggs sunny-side up and bacon, and also a strawberry mimosa and a creme brûlée latte to go with my entree :) ! My friend ordered the Huevos Hofbrau and a mocha latte :) ! I have to admit that it is really loud and boisterous on the weekends, much more so than I would like it to be! Because I am really soft-spoken, I would have preferred somewhere that is perhaps not as noisy. If come again, I most likely will try to come either really early in the morning when it first opens, or on a weekday during Happy Hour from 3-6 pm. Despite the noise, the host and hostess up front, as well as our waiter, were very warm and friendly :) ! I would definitely recommend this place :D ! But I just recommend making a reservation, especially for peak hours and weekends! read more

LOVE! This is definitely a spot to come visit. The ambiance is incredible & comfortable. The staff are all nice, respectful, and welcoming. The food is tasty, I really enjoyed the chicken fried steak & the fried green tomatoes. They have several items on the menu that can be make gluten free and I was not let down at all. My waitress took the time to explain the menu to us, as well as, to explain what can be made gluten free. She also took the time to explain why certain items could not be made gluten free. By far exceeded my expectations. The cheesecake is gluten free as well and definitely homemade. IT WAS SO GOOD! My husband had the burger & enjoyed it. He recommended it, stated it was "very good & juicy". read more

Went in thinking I'd give it another chance as restaurant is close to NE Baptist where my sister is presently at... And what a disaster at least w/my order: cup of beef stew??? Did not know you could mess such a simple thing up! So, not only was their 1 sole piece of beef wasn't pricey but a lil surprised at the amount of beef. Then I partook & I don't think I've ever had a soup with sssooo much black pepper that the right side of my face began to swell. And I have NO FOOD ALLERGIES! Now, I will say my husband was satisfied w/his meatloaf that is the reason for 2 stars. read more

We've seen mamas for a while and how it was always packed so we assumed it was good and finally got to give it a try today. Our 20min wait wasn't bad considering the crowd and our waiter was nice. Our food is where it kind of fell flat, I shared a burger with my kiddo since I wasn't super hungry and got it medium well with fries. It was an okay burger, about what I'd expect for a standard cheeseburger with some veggies. The fries weren't hot but weren't cold either, they at least had a nice crunch though which I enjoyed. My husband got the fried chicken sandwich and he said it was just okay, he didn't like the fries due to temp. The restaurant itself is cute, over all though I don't know that we'll be back due to the price point not matching food expectations. read more
We arrived around 11:15am, and they were somewhat busy. We had a party of 7, and they were kind enough to seat us in back to back booths to avoid having to wait over an hour. Yes, it's a bit noisy, however to be expected for a busy spot. Xavier was our waiter, very attentive and friendly. Excellent service hands down. We order a mix of things from the menu, biscuit with a side of gravy, helluva mess breakfast, chicken fried steak, avocado BLT, and crispy chicken caesar salad. The food, AMAZING! So so good. We nearly ate everything on our plates even tho we were full. Didn't want to waste a bite. Hands down, if you're in the area, this place is a MUST! They do take reservations I found out, so call ahead. And ask for Xavier! He's fantastic! read more

I was in the mood for meatloaf. Wanted to try a new place so I came here. I had the meatloaf and my husband had the bake chicken. I'm going to say the meatloaf was OK but the sides were delicious. My husband loved his baked chicken. We had peach cobbler for dessert. The service was excellent. This is a very cool kickback relax country style restaurant. I will definitely go back. read more

The Yelp description is perfect when it says it's a Texas themed comfort food restaurant. Try the Crispy Deviled Eggs. With some additional salt sprinkled on top they're perfect. Chicken Fried Steak and Pot Roast were good too. Service was very friendly and attentive. read more
Stopped in for lunch after an early round of golf and looking for some comfort food, I decided to stop in at Mama's and I'm glad I did. I hadn't been to Mama's in a few years and was hoping they were still putting out good food. I start off by ordering the fried mushrooms as an app and the meatloaf for my main course. The interior decor has stayed the same and gives off a welcoming vibe. The mushrooms come our first and are a nice golden brown on the outside, with a nice crunch when you bite into one which is then followed by the juiciness of the mushroom. Still as good as I remember. You are provided two dips, gravy and ranch dressing. The meatloaf comes out next, and it was served with two slices of loaf. Upon tasting, the loaf is nicely seasoned and moist. The mashed potatoes are also nicely whipped and buttered and hit the spot. The mac-n-cheese is very gooey and does not disappoint. Comfort food indeed! As a treat, I ordered their basque cheesecake and it was fabulous. They are one of the few restaurants that have that on their menu, so I recommend trying it if you like cheesecake. Overall, I really enjoyed this meal and look forward to coming back and trying some old faves. read more
Delicious and perfect! Eggs are fluffy, perfectly prepared and plenty. The waffle is flaky, light and crispy. If you like more soft, gooey waffles, these are the opposite. I love light and flaky waffles do these were a highlight for me. The grits are savory. The service was perfection -- just enough checking on us to ensure that we never waited for anything without constantly interrupting our conversation. Howdy, folks! Hard to believe, but it was time for another monthly retirement luncheon with my teacher buddies from Carson Elementary School. I planned for us to go to a restaurant in New Braunfels that I have wanted to try. Unfortunately, they called me a few days before to tell me they were cancelling my reservation to close down and paint the restaurant. I happened to be with one of my fellow retirees, and she suggested Mama's Cafe. I was shocked. I used to love Mama's when it was on I-10. I had no idea they had reopened somewhere else. I made a reservation right away. The night before our luncheon, my friend called to tell me that they would not do separate checks for parties of six or more. I freaked out for a few, until I called Mama's and explained what was happeing. The fellow I spoke with told me not to worry about it, so I didn't. Hallelujah! It was pretty busy when I arrived just before 1:30. I had to park way in the back and hike to the front. To me a full parking lot is a sign of good food. I wasn't wrong. I ordered my favorite from the old location, liver and onions with mashed potatoes. It was cooked perfectly. They served brown gravy with the potatoes. I had a choice of cream gravy, but to me, that doesn't go with liver. Fortunately, the liver itself had onions that had been cooked in the juices on top, just like my own Mama made. If I had plugged my ears and covered my eyes, I could have believed it was 1974, I was 16, and I was eating dinner at my childhood home. To be honest, that is why I always liked it at the old location. If you don't cook liver like my mom, I don't want it! The husband of one of the teachers ordered the meatloaf. Y'all know that is my favorite food. I'm just a little skittish about ordering it in restaurants. I have been served some pretty bad meatloaf over the years. Anyway, he cut a bite of his meatloaf and passed it down on a bread plate for me to try. It was nothing like the perfect and probably world's best meatloaf that my darling wife makes for me. But, it was really good. I especially like the chunks of carrots that were put inside. It was moist and had a pleasant texture. I'm not sure what everyone else had. I didn't hear any negative comments. They all seemed happy. As they person who finds the venues and makes our arrangements, I think that is enough said! I'll be back. I'll get a better picture then! read more
