It was my first time trying Mama's Cafe, which I didn't realize is literally a hop and a skip away from me :) ! I met a friend here yesterday for Sunday brunch. Luckily, we made reservations prior to the weekend so that we could get seated right away on a busy Sunday! I ordered "A Helluva Mess," and chose eggs sunny-side up and bacon, and also a strawberry mimosa and a creme brûlée latte to go with my entree :) ! My friend ordered the Huevos Hofbrau and a mocha latte :) ! I have to admit that it is really loud and boisterous on the weekends, much more so than I would like it to be! Because I am really soft-spoken, I would have preferred somewhere that is perhaps not as noisy. If come again, I most likely will try to come either really early in the morning when it first opens, or on a weekday during Happy Hour from 3-6 pm. Despite the noise, the host and hostess up front, as well as our waiter, were very warm and friendly :) ! I would definitely recommend this place :D ! Recommended to try MaMa's Cafe out. Such a cute place inside and decorated nice. Plenty of parking. Indoor and outdoor seating with outdoor having a water feature. I finally tried mammas cafe . It was not as good as everyone makes it. Our food was cold and lack flavor. The pancakes were stale as though they had been sitting for a while . My biscuits and gravy was also Cold and the biscuits were hard . I'm Sure there's other great items on the menu but this was not a great visit . read more

We visited Mama's Café on a Saturday around noon. When we arrived, we were greeted right away and informed that they seemed to be short-staffed. We were given the option of waiting about 15 minutes for a table or sitting in the bar area, so we chose one of the high-top tables in the bar. The café itself is very cute and has a charming atmosphere. The bar area has red neon lighting along the ceiling, which gives the room a distinctive glow. After ordering coffee and waters, we decided on the fried mushrooms, the meatloaf plate, and the Breakfast Pile. They never ended up refilling any of our drinks. The fried mushrooms came out first and were piping hot. They were served with both white gravy and ranch. The ranch was pretty tasty, but the mushrooms themselves were fairly bland and quite greasy. To be fair, deep-fried mushrooms aren't exactly a light dish, but I found myself adding salt to everything to bring out more flavor. For my entrée, I ordered the meatloaf with mashed potatoes and green beans. The meatloaf contained carrots, which was an interesting touch. The slices were very thick and firm, and honestly didn't resemble or taste like a traditional meatloaf. I asked for the gravy on the side and ended up dipping each bite into it, but the dish still wasn't my favorite. The green beans were the biggest miss for me. They had a mucky flavor that reminded me of mop water. The Breakfast Pile was decent enough: potatoes, sausage, eggs, and gravy layered together. Unfortunately, it also felt underseasoned and could have benefited from more flavor. The standout item of the entire meal was the biscuit with honey butter. They initially forgot to bring the honey butter, and I'm very glad we asked for it because it completely made the dish. The biscuit was warm, soft, and by far the most enjoyable thing we ate. Overall, Mama's Café has a cute atmosphere and friendly service despite being understaffed when we visited. However, most of the food felt underseasoned and lacked flavor. If you're looking for a cozy spot to sit and chat, it's worth a visit, but based on this meal, I probably would only come back if someone said it was their favorite restaurant and I try what they order read more

I came here for the first time on my birthday this past month 5/12! It was around 12pm, it was pretty full inside but we got a table for 4 no problem. First time visit and overall, it was just OK. I'm not a fan, but I did try (the smallest) mushroom & I'm still not convinced ‍ but my Fiancée loved them! My Catfish plate was good, but I felt cheated on the collards because it was literally 2 fork-fulls and that was it, which was disappointing because they were good, though a bit spicy & the greens/smoked meat/peppers ratio was imbalanced. I didn't hear any major concerns, so she enjoyed her chicken plate. But, the star of the night for me was definitely the Deviled Eggs. I'd never had them fried...and WOW!-very different, but tasty!!! I have never been to a restaurant with so much personality! As you enter the restaurant, you see a sign that states, "Welcome Home !" Love that... So intriguing...Then the collections...license plates, beer cans, pictures, hats, decorative metal saddles...I have not had a morsel of food and I'm totally enamored. Met my brother for breakfast. You might be asking why I'm having breakfast in a place that is heavy carnivore given I'm doing the Daniel fast. Well, my brother insisted. Smile. I vaguely recall him saying something like I'm not eating that vegan stuff . Needless to say, he's not pro vegan. Sigh. It is important to note, ample free parking is available. A brief but meaningful conversation, attentive service, and great timing throughout. It's clear he enjoys what he does, and it shows. The food was excellent. I went with a Texas staple, chicken fried steak, and it didn't disappoint. Crispy, well-seasoned, and satisfying, exactly what you hope for when ordering it in Texas. The real standout for me, though, was the collard greens. As someone from North Carolina, I don't say this lightly, these were the best collards I've had outside of NC. Perfectly cooked, full of flavor, with a subtle Hispanic flair and just a touch of spice that elevated them without overpowering the dish. Comfort food done right, friendly service, and an easy in-and-out location near the airport make this an easy recommendation. I used to come here when I was a little kid in the early 2000s and I remember as a child really liking it. However now that I'm in my 30s and tried it out for the first time in a long time the food was very bland. From the fried mushrooms to the fish and chips and chicken fried steak. Every item seemed like it lacked seasoning. We drowned most of our proteins in sauce to give it some flavor but none of the components were that great. My husband also said he felt pretty sick afterwards and had to take meds to settle his stomach. I'm going to let Mama's Cafe live on in my memory as it was in the past and try not to think about the current food quality. My wife and I used to go here in the late 80s when we first met on dates. Always had a great time. The few times that I've been since have never been all that impressive, however, my son wanted to go there for his 30th birthday for brunch. We all agree it was probably the worst meal that we had ever had there. I had the shrimp and grits, the shrimp were so overdone they were like rubber. My wife had the Migas Hofbrau. The eggs itself were average, while the potatoes were ice cold. As long as we had waited for our food, that explains everything. It seems like our order set up under the heat lamp the entire time. Our food is where it kind of fell flat, I shared a burger with my kiddo since I wasn't super hungry and got it medium well with fries. It was an okay burger, about what I'd expect for a standard cheeseburger with some veggies. The fries weren't hot but weren't cold either, they at least had a nice crunch though which I enjoyed. My husband got the fried chicken sandwich and he said it was just okay, he didn't like the fries due to temp. We arrived around 11:15am, and they were somewhat busy. We had a party of 7, and they were kind enough to seat us in back to back booths to avoid having to wait over an hour. Yes, it's a bit noisy, however to be expected for a busy spot. Xavier was our waiter, very attentive and friendly. Excellent service hands down. We order a mix of things from the menu, biscuit with a side of gravy, helluva mess breakfast, chicken fried steak, avocado BLT, and crispy chicken caesar salad. The food, AMAZING! So so good. Stopped in for lunch after an early round of golf and looking for some comfort food, I decided to stop in at Mama's and I'm glad I did. I hadn't been to Mama's in a few years and was hoping they were still putting out good food. I start off by ordering the fried mushrooms as an app and the meatloaf for my main course. The interior decor has stayed the same and gives off a welcoming vibe. The mushrooms come our first and are a nice golden brown on the outside, with a nice crunch when you bite into one which is then followed by the juiciness of the mushroom. Still as good as I remember. You are provided two dips, gravy and ranch dressing. The meatloaf comes out next, and it was served with two slices of loaf. Upon tasting, the loaf is nicely seasoned and moist. The mashed potatoes are also nicely whipped and buttered and hit the spot. The mac-n-cheese is very gooey and does not disappoint. Comfort food indeed! As a treat, I ordered their basque cheesecake and it was fabulous. They are one of the few restaurants that have that on their menu, so I recommend trying it if you like cheesecake. Howdy, folks! Hard to believe, but it was time for another monthly retirement luncheon with my teacher buddies from Carson Elementary School. I planned for us to go to a restaurant in New Braunfels that I have wanted to try. Unfortunately, they called me a few days before to tell me they were cancelling my reservation to close down and paint the restaurant. I happened to be with one of my fellow retirees, and she suggested Mama's Cafe. I was shocked. I used to love Mama's when it was on I-10. I had no idea they had reopened somewhere else. I made a reservation right away. The night before our luncheon, my friend called to tell me that they would not do separate checks for parties of six or more. I freaked out for a few, until I called Mama's and explained what was happeing. The fellow I spoke with told me not to worry about it, so I didn't. Hallelujah! It was pretty busy when I arrived just before 1:30. I had to park way in the back and hike to the front. To me a full parking lot is a sign of good food. I wasn't wrong. I ordered my favorite from the old location, liver and onions with mashed potatoes. It was cooked perfectly. They served brown gravy with the potatoes. I had a choice of cream gravy, but to me, that doesn't go with liver. Fortunately, the liver itself had onions that had been cooked in the juices on top, just like my own Mama made. If I had plugged my ears and covered my eyes, I could have believed it was 1974, I was 16, and I was eating dinner at my childhood home. To be honest, that is why I always liked it at the old location. If you don't cook liver like my mom, I don't want it! The husband of one of the teachers ordered the meatloaf. Y'all know that is my favorite food. I'm just a little skittish about ordering it in restaurants. I have been served some pretty bad meatloaf over the years. Anyway, he cut a bite of his meatloaf and passed it down on a bread plate for me to try. It was nothing like the perfect and probably world's best meatloaf that my darling wife makes for me. But, it was really good. I especially like the chunks of carrots that were put inside. It was moist and had a pleasant texture. I'm not sure what everyone else had. I didn't hear any negative comments. They all seemed happy. As they person who finds the venues and makes our arrangements, I think that is enough said! I'll be back. We had not eaten here in a couple of decades but decided to come back due to hearing great things about the food. Driving into the parking lot, we found parking to be easy and plentiful. Then it was just a short walk to the entrance. Walking in, we were greeted immediately and told there just a few minutes wait. About the time we were about to sit down to wait, they were ready to seat us. We were taken into one of the back rooms for our table. Seating was chairs on one side and an uncomfortable straight bench on the other. Wait staff said they would be with us soon. Our waitress never really came to our table as she preferred to talk to us from a position by her computer where they placed the orders. My wife and I ordered the same thing, and it was prepared quickly and delivered to our table piping hot. I could see by my wife's face that she was not happy with what was delivered. Mine, on the other hand, was fine. Our waitress never really returned as she continued to wait on us from her computer. She brought us our bill, and we paid without really looking at it. Will I return? Not reviewing the bill was a mistake as our waitress charged us incorrectly. The restaurant has both a small and a large order of what we ordered, and we ordered the small version. However, she charged us for the large order. Also, the food left both of us with a greasy film on our tongues and an unflattering aftertaste. My daughter and I visited Mama's Cafe and our meals were superb. My pancakes with maple syrup were great, the scrambled eggs and bacon on the side were great and the milk was fresh. My daughter loved her liver and onions with gravy, the gravy was made with some sort of wine, and the greens - oh those greens were too die for only thing missing was corn bread to go with those greens. My daughter ordered bisquits which were square (odd) but they were tasty. The homemade plum jam was excellent! She ordered the Sriracha onion rings (hot and did not taste good) which were a miss. Overall, our meals were great and the restaurant decor was interesting! I looked up above our table and there was a replica of Texas made out of wine corks on the ceiling. There was also an American flag replica another place on the ceiling, both were cute and there were a lot of metal tractor seats hanging on the wall. Our servers were very nice and offered menu selections that were point on. I ordered a cinnamon roll to go and my daughter ordered cheesecake. Overall, dining at Mama's was great. She was super friendly and knowledgeable. The tomato bisque was sooooo good. I wish I could have another bowl now that I'm sitting here thinking about it. They went out of their way to make us gluten free onion rings because we got there pretty late and it was slow. The waitress was so nice to explain why they don't typically do it as sometimes the batter doesn't stick well to the onion but they were AMAZING. The seasoning in that batter was sheer perfection. I don't think I would get the deviled eggs again. They were good, but they just weren't anything special.
