Let me start by saying this........HANDS DOWN!!!!!! IT WAS a party of 4, and yes, we ate in!!! Because it felt like home. The food was a comfort to our soul and bellies. Our table order: OxTails Fried pork chops Fried rib tips Fish All the sides Swamp water Kool-aid (fruit punch) x3 Let's just say....did were stuck.....the owner gave such a welcoming vibe we all wanted to hug her after we ate. Everything was cooked and seasoned to perfection......we are foodies!!!! And this spot did not disappoint..... I wanted seconds of everything. Bae took the rest of the Oxtails and inhaled them quickly. Now, the cabbage was not ready, but the substitutions were so on point!!! But they did bring out the cabbage when it was ready.....they throw licks!!! I can't tell you enough how delicious this place was!!!!! Just go... thank me later!!!! So we wanted something sweet.....lawdy she was out of cake... but had sweet potato cheecacake from her husband birthday!!!! So he welcomed us to celebrate with him as we were celebrating a birthday within our party too! Go and come back to tell me about it The outside made you think of the corner store, and inside it felt like the community food spot, old head watching the door, others playing cards while they waited......it was just a home vibe for me, like I was with my auntie and cousins in the south!!!! Man, just GO NOW, RUN, because you are about to miss out

Cozy little place, very friendly staff and guests. This place reminds me of my hometown, Memphis. Definitely soul food!!. Everything I ate was delicious. I had fried catfish..too good, lemon pepper wings...cooked just right and full of flavor. I also had collard greens and cabbage with delicious corn bread. I wanted to check in the back kitchen to see if my mother and grandma (reincarnated )was back there!! I definitely give D & N kitchen a total 10 !

We stayed one night in San Antonio and found this gem. We walked in and the owner is sitting in the dining area chatting with customers coming through the door. The establishment is an older one, BUT as soon as you sit down you notice how clean they keep everything. Very homey and welcoming. The food was a solid 9 out of 10. I ordered the oxtails--- the meat was so savory and tender, rice perfectly cooked and the cornbread has the perfect balance of sweet and salty, definitely recommend you try it. My husband got the fish and chicken: he thought it was delicious. Chicken was perfectly cooked and crispy . But he said the catfish as a hit out of the ballpark. Everything was fresh and authentic- delicious. Come with time, the wait is worth it!! I'd love to visit again!

Lunch is served - fried wings, candied yams and smothered cabbage.

San Antonio soul food lovers, I would like to introduce you to a new contender in the African-American foodie diaspora. If you're living, working or visiting San Antonio and you are willing to venture just a little East of downtown, then check out D & N Kitchen, a woman-owned business that opened in 11/2021. At D & N Kitchen, the people are friendly and the food hits just right to make you feel like you' are eating at Auntie's house. And, Ms. Acquanetta knows how to throw down and cook soul food classics like fried chicken, fried fish, oxtails, pork chops, collard greens, cabbage, mashed potatoes and more. The portions are righteous and the the prices are reasonable. Phone orders are accepted; however, if you don't order in advance, be prepared to sit back and politely wait for your food to be cooked. I ordered a fried wing plate which included two sides and cornbread. I selected candied yams and cabbage as my sides and I was satisfied with every bit of that meal, especially those perfectly fried wings. The restaurant is not fancy, but I enjoyed escaping from work, kicking back, chatting with the lunch crowd, including local comedian Alvin Perry, listening to some classic soul music and chowing down on those wings. Ya'll know how we do, YOU better go get you some!!! D & N Kitchen is located off Commerce Street and is openTuesday - Friday from 11:30 am - 7:30 pm.

If you're anywhere near the east side of San Antonio, do yourself a favor and stop by J's Eatery…read more From the moment we walked in, it felt less like a restaurant and more like we were being welcomed into someone's home. The vibe was warm, relaxed, and genuinely friendly. We started with the orange pepper chicken wings -- flavorful, crispy, and absolutely delicious. The sauce was not thick or overpowering, and the wings were cooked just right with that satisfying crunch. My wife and I both ordered the shrimp & grits -- I went spicy, she kept hers mild. Both were cooked to perfection. The shrimp were tender and well-seasoned, the grits creamy and rich, and the spice level on mine had just the right kick without overpowering the dish. Truly top notch. We also added cornbread and greens, and honestly, I could have eaten nothing but those greens and been completely happy. They were that good -- perfectly seasoned, comforting, and full of flavor. The whole experience felt like we were sitting at a friend's house while their dad and uncle -- the best cooks in the neighborhood -- were in the kitchen preparing a special meal just for us. That's the kind of place this is. We'll absolutely be back.

The cabbage was somewhat spicy, the cornbread muffin was a half muffin, the muffin did not fill up the cupcake muffin wrapper. But the fried catfish, fried chicken wings and yams were on point, I would order the catfish and chicken wing plate to go anyday! The peach cobbler was very sweet. My daughter ordered meatloaf, a pork chop plate, Mac & cheese, collard greens, cornbread muffin, a tropical punch beverage and banana pudding which I felt the pudding was watered down vs. being thick. She asked for medium cooked pork chops and one pork chop was medium and one pork chop was over cooked. She notified the cashier and he stated they both were cooked at temp the same time. The collard greens were spicy and the Mac & cheese were watered down. I had to go to the restroom. This was the worst restroom in any restaurant I have ever used. First, there was no light on, I had to ask for light and one of the employees turned on the light. Secondly, there was an awful hole in the top right corner ceiling, I was afraid to use the restroom for fear of some bug crawling in through the ceiling hole. Third, there was also a hole in the wall visible behind the toilet tank top, again I was afraid to set down on the toilet and the whole bathroom decor was unappealing. When other patrons described this establishment as as "HOLE IN THE WALL" they were absolutely correct. Don't forget about the hole in the ceiling! Entering into the building, the walls and ceiling were black, making the atmosphere sad. There was also a small bar to the left of the dining area. But the kicker for me was, our two meals, two beverages, and two desserts cost $61!!! As many Soul Food Restaurant I have eaten in with my daughter for two people, I have never been charged so much for two soulfood meals with two beverages and two desserts. RECOMMEDATION: Of course my palate is different from other customers, but I would never return to the establishment due to being over charged for two meals, two beverages, two desserts and the lady's restroom was the pits.

Cons: - We sat down and the tables were sticky with syrup from previous guests -My food came out 45 mins before my wife's food. So that was cool.......no actually it wasn't. - Charging $50 for a $7 bottle of champagne is downright criminal. All in all the energy was great & the food was PHENOMENAL! The one thing that got to me was our food being brought out so far apart. It was my wife's birthday and I kinda had to sit there like an A-hole choosing between eating and watching wifey not eat...the server was extremely gracious and comped her food so I appreciate that, but in the moment of it all happening it kind of sucked. The host? Amazing! Dude was everywhere making sure things got done. The waiters? Top tier. The pure energy in the building? Love it!

Ma Parker prides herself on family, giving people second chances and a decent meal for a reasonable price. Everyone who came in for lunch paid Ma Harper respect and was treated like family. The fried shrimp po-boy, fully dressed on a perfect NOLA roll was a must try. A small side of red beans and rice was also included. The sandwich was packed with crispy fried shrimp, but the normal remoulade sauce was replaced with ketchup / mayo mixture, not savory. The red beans and rice were fine but lacked real flavor.
