After reading a good number of reviews, we decided we must have seafood at the Red Barn. Unfortunately, the seafood was not nearly as delicious as some of the reviews had indicated. I ordered the clear meat lobster roll with extra melted butter. The lobster was quite good - super meaty & sweet. However, it was served on a pre-toasted, cold roll. I would have really enjoyed buttered lobster meat nestled in a hot, toasty, buttery roll. My husband ordered the haddock basket, which comes with a large dinner roll (taking up a lot of basket space), french fries, and strips of haddock, that are reminiscent of fish sticks; and we ordered an appetizer of fried shrimp. Now half the enjoyment of fried fish is the batter - right?! This batter was just terrible. Tasteless, "freezer", poor- textured batter. My husband choked down most of the fish by covering it with tarter sauce. But the shrimp was inedible. Plus, they do not serve cocktail sauce, only tarter sauce & ketchup. We sat in a section that was open for seating, however, many of the tables had the chairs placed on top and a young lady was mopping the floors. The smell of disinfectant wafted through the dining room. The decent lobster roll was knocked down by the terrible fried fish, thus the three stars. No reason to return. read more

After 5 days of lobster rolls from the south to the middle coast of Maine, my favorite lobster roll was from Red Barn Drive-in. The lobster meat is from the claws, making it sweeter and less stringy. The meat was not hidden by the mayo and the spices were just right. Oh yeah, I almost forgot the portions, the place is a deep fried food nirvana and man is the food fresh and tasty. Hint don't order the meal, order the large portion entrée and you will receive only the seafood. The large portion is usually a dollar or two more for twice the amount of food. I got greedy and ordered the whole clam large portion and between my son and I we had to push to finish the whole thing. The clams were tasty chunks of meat and flavor. While I loved the deep fryer products, I think I would stick to the lobster roll only because I want to fit back in my car after I finish eating. read more

This is fried food country. If that's what you're after, you will probably like it. I am not a fried food person. Or, I should say that I don't like fried food unless it's exceptional. I ordered the fried chicken breast thinking that I could remove the skin and eat the juicy white meat below. I didn't know that chicken meant cut up tenders covered with a heavy and salty batter. Inedible. As were the frozen French fries. However, my husband's fried scallops were lightly battered, not particularly salty, and the scallops themselves were sweet and juicy. There was a surprisingly good roll with whipped butter (a nice touch). Cole slaw was also excellent. The cabbage shined through a nice vinegary brine. Absolutely outstanding is the seafood stew. Large chunks of wonderful fish and seafood in a nice cream base. If they served only the stew and the roll and butter, five stars! read more

Awesome food, although we ended up wasting quite a bit because the portions are so large and we were staying in a hotel. May want to share if you're traveling! Best service!! Awesome, delicious food served up by sweethearts! We had the seafood stew, the mixed seafood basket, and a lobster roll, and all were excellent. We finished up with a home-made whoopie pie -- looks like an oreo on steroids, with soft chocolate cake sandwiching tasty frosting. The Red Barn is a great value! I recommend the family meal. For $21 I got 1 large fry, 1 large onion ring ($1.50 extra), 4 dinner rolls, 1 large container of coleslaw, 3 large drinks, or you can opt for 4 small drinks, and 2 pints of chicken. The chicken came in a large to go box. Everything was packaged up nicely for take out. We never felt rushed to order, and the customer service was great! There was enough food for 5-6 people. Make sure you ask for extra sauce, as you will definitely need it! Everything was fresh, and the fried food didn't taste like seafood. I would highly recommend. read more

As a kid it was always a treat to go to Red Barn, now as an adult it still is! Let's face it, this is not the place to go if you're dieting but if you're in the mood for excellent boneless fried chicken served with crispy crinkle fries then this is the place to go. Not to mention the seafood stew; it's literally the best I've ever had. A cup is chock full of haddock, scallops, shrimp, and lobster in a buttery rich broth. You simply can not miss if you order this! Another reason that I am in full support of Red Barn is because the owner, Laura, is a huge humanitarian. She's always raising money and hosting benefits for the community members. It makes me feel good to know that I'm supporting a local business owner who gives so much to the community! The line can be long and it can feel crowded but the service is quick and in the warmer months the outdoor seating is nice. Pets welcomed too! Food is reliable and tasty. Seafood always fresh and usually more than one person can eat. Both my husband and I have learned to order "snack" size. Not much ambiance, but hey, it's a fish shack. Owner supports lots of local causes so you can feel good supporting the place. read more

We had dinner here on 7/8/18 and the food was delicious! We took on the foot long lobster roll and it didn't disappoint! Also their seafood chowder was the best we had while in Maine! But I want to talk about the service...we took an uber there b/c we wanted to have a beer...well they don't serve beer, but that was fine...but when we went to uber back to the hotel there were NO uber's available...no taxis, nothing...so we were stuck...we went inside and the staff offered to take us home! So the busboy, and I think maybe a dishwasher or sous chef drove us home and were very gracious! I highly recommend The Red Barn for their food and just GREAT PEOPLE!!! read more

Family favorite. Great food, reasonably priced, fast service. Plus, now larger with new addition. Best is the summer when you can eat outside -- you can get the dog out of the car and tie him/her to a picnic table, plus, the staff will give you water in a chowder cup for the pooch. Best bets: any fried seafood, seafood chowder, fried chicken, burgers. Basically, you can't go wrong. Only minus -- one bathroom. read more

Amazing lobster roll. I was driving from Mount Katahdin back to Boston Massachusetts, and in need of a good seafood meal. I checked on yelp and recommended the red barn in it. They had two choices for the lobster roll. The quarter pounder and a halfpounder. I had the quarter pounder which was very reasonable at $11. This was a wonderful place to get deep fried seafood. It was the freshest deep fried seafood I've ever had and I am redundant as my sister says but that's OK it was good deep fried seafood excuse me my sister corrected me it is superb deep fried seafood. Great fried food, both chicken and seafood are awesome, as are the milkshakes. Diner style family place, so expect it to be loud. During the warmer months there's loads of outdoor seating as well. I've lived in major cities from coast to coast, and now call the heart of the country home, but nothing makes me feel more at home than a chicken basket from Red Barn. I never miss making a visit whenever I'm in Maine, and if anyone else out there is looking for an authentic taste of Maine hospitality, this is the place for you. The staff couldn't be nicer, the decor is charming, and the food is out of this world. We've tried some of the other spots mentioned in these reviews, and they don't even come close to Red Barn. This is a pleasant place to eat. Causal and comfortable. They have a good amount of seating capacity. You order at the window and pickup when called. The food came out reasonably fast. This is mostly a fried seafood place. The lobster roll had a lot of meat but a bit too much mayo. The seafood chowder was absolutely loaded with large pieces of fish. Taste was average. Probably the best fried food joint around. Their chicken basket is very popular and you get lots of it. The fries are good but they don't reheat well so be sure to eat them up. Wow this place really cranks out the fried food. We got there around 3 pm and it was mobbed. I had the fried clam strip app where you Def get your monies worth . Onion rings and fried clams n fish were the typical breading for the area. Service was fast and an interesting experience prices were very reasonable.
