I made chef table reservations a month in advance for our 1 week stay in Augusta, Maine. When we showed up, the restaurant had just got flooded with a lot of people. We waited a long time to be helped and served food but I will say, the place was packed and they were extremely understaffed and working the best that they could with a great attitude. Eli who was cooking was great to chat with. Watching him work was awesome to watch and made the waiting so long enjoyable. Food was spot on! We got the tasting menu with wine pairing. The wine pairings were small but all of them really truly complimented each dish. I highly recommend anyone who wants a great dining experience to check this place out! The Oak Table & Bar is a hidden gem you must discover in the heart of Downtown Augusta! On my maiden visit, I stopped in because I was looking for a local small business to patronize during the Covid-19 Pandemic, as a way to support my community. I made a 6:30 reservation to eat some food and use the WiFi to write a report. (Free WiFi - just ask for the password - another plus!) I signed in at the front table for Covid-19 tracking purposes and the bartender offered me a table or bar seating, I took a table as I knew I was going to sprawl paperwork all over the place for work. A perusal of the one-time-use-menu displayed a decadent, succulent, array of uncommon dishes I couldn't wait to try! The tomato and cucumber gazpacho instantly caught my eye, as did the Maine oysters on the half shell with apple mignonette. Ultimately, I landed on the asparagus risotto. It took almost no time for this beautifully, simple-plated dish of creamy, excellently seasoned risotto nestling a golden egg yolk in the center, to be placed before me. Pierce the egg yolk and savor each creamy perfectly cooked bite. The asparagus had the fainted hint of amazing char that made them the star of the dish for sure. You won't be disappointed in the perfect portion size and reasonable price to have Manhattan style meals, served in a historic building in unassuming downtown Augusta Maine. There is plenty of street parking, as well as parking along the river. You can see the sturgeon jumping from the bar, where you can also watch chef Eli prepare your meal before your very eyes. Very cool! Fun music gives the place a hipster vibe. It's just the kind of place Augusta needs right now. You won't be disappointed! We drove through Augusta on our way to bar harbor and needed a good meal, and damn if we didn't find one! I reserved a spot for two at the chefs table for my girlfriends birthday and Whitney and Eli definitely didn't disappoint! Whitney walked us through the tasting, giving us flavor and cooking pointers along the way. The experience was surreal, and the food was incredible. ABSOLUTELY recommend experiencing this restaurant from the little bar in the back where the magic happens. We had the shishito peppers drizzled with soy and lime, the baked Camembert with nectarines, the oysters (DUH), the Maine corn risotto (best risotto I've ever eaten), the flank steak, and ended the night with the chocolate custard. Our first, but definitely not our last visit to this awesome, but small eatery! Our server, Mason, gave us the seat of our choice and remained attentive the entire time. He was also the bartender and made us two stellar, house cocktails, a cider sangria and a spiced pear and rum cocktail. Both were a treat! The menu was varied and interesting. Four courses, with a few selections for each course. Both of us started with cream of mushroom soup, which had an intense but smooth mushroom taste. Chef Dan added some additional mushrooms and herbs to the top, which pushed course one, over the top for my tastebuds. Delicious! Course two, I had fried lion's mane mushrooms...you, I love mushrooms. They were cooked well, a little bit of salt from some crumbles, just brought the flavor out more. My wife ate the Smokey bell pepper with whipped goat cheese. She won round two. Both dishes were excellent. Course three was a crispy pork belly with beet sauerkraut for my wife, and a stuffed Swiss chard with lamb and rice for me. The crispy texture on the pork was off the rails perfect! This was amazing. However, my stuffed chard left me smiling. I'll call this course a draw. Course four was my crowning glory. I had Red Deer backstrap with sautéed baby kale and beet-pomegranate side. WOW! Perfectly cooked to MR and a great compliment with the side. My wife had the rigatoni and it was very good...but mine was better We split the Kahlua chocolate pudding for dessert and we're fighting over the brûlée bananas. What a dinner! Unassuming from the outside, stepping into the Oak Table & Bar is like walking into a light, airy gastronomical delight. Open, inviting, and smelling slightly of smoke from the custom smoked cocktails, I was greeted warmly by the bartender and was given my choice of sitting at the bar or a table. I opted for the bar, since the stools actually looked comfortable. The menu is composed of 3 categories of small plates carefully crafted from local, fresh ingredients: an $11 set, a $15 set, and a $19 set, or you can get a four-course chef's tasting for $49. I opted for the latter, selecting the warm beets over goat cheese, the polenta cake with lamb, peekytoe crab salad, and the mushroom and brie risotto. The beets were tender, and the goat cheese was mild-- usually goat cheese has a strong, barnyardy flavor. The secret, the bartender told me, was that fresh cream was whipped into locally-sourced, grass fed goat cheese. Divine, with a lovely fatty mouthfeel contrasted by crunchy hazelnuts and sweet beets and pea shoots. Then came the polenta cake with lamb. Succulent, savory, the lamb was mild and reminded me of the lamb I had in Iceland, exceptional quality. My next dish was the peekytoe crab salad which was so light, refreshing, and crisp with celery, radishes, and fine slivers of apple. I could have eaten my bodyweight in it, it was so good. And then the risotto. Perfectly creamy with chunks of brie melting into it and a variety of different mushrooms, this was a delight. It was hard not to lick the bowl, and I really wish I had a piece of crusty bread to wipe the bowl with. What an outstanding culinary experience. Central Maine has been starved for a higher end dining experience, and from start to finish, between the service and the food, I left satisfied, valued, and in awe of the culinary artistry that left me delighted. This place is great. Chef Eli was friendly, the hostess/barkeep was also great. Food is superb! Small portions, which is perfect for trying several things. We ate at the "chef's table", which looks like a bar along the kitchen. We could watch the chef cook while we ate, and that was a neat aspect. Eli was happy to answer any questions we had but also didn't hover so we (spouse and I) could just chat and enjoy our night out. Each dish was delicious and freshly prepared from local ingredients. Good wines and we finished with an apple crisp/caramel dessert. There is one less reason to drive to Portland! Eli's food is a revelation. Simple, wonderful fresh, and well presented. Tastes are unique and well balanced. The duck and scallops were of note, among the best we've enjoyed in Maine. Where do I start? Very difficult to identify with virtually no signage visibility from the street. When we arrived on a Thursday night about 6PM we were asked if we had reservations. Nearly half the seats were empty. Fixed price menu was 4 courses for $69.00. Not too bad until you see the portions. You could opt to share each course on an individual basis. Service was slow but the waitress was pleasant. Small portion of soup, 4 oysters that were small in mignonette that was extremely salty. 3 perogies that were actually good. Excluding wine the bill was about $70.00. Basically served us 3 appetizers. Should have looked at other restaurants on Water St. read more

Firstly the drinks were pretty amazing so there's that. we made reservations at the Chefs Table. I was not overly impressed with the meal. The chef seemed very busy and over worked. Short staffed. He really didn't take the time to explain the foods he was serving. The Halibut we had was a bit over cooked and dry. The sautéed mushrooms lacked flavor, we actually had to salt them to make them more appeasing. I believe that the chef may need to re-evaluate the situation and perhaps while struggling for help, take less reservations so that he can truly approach his craft. The food wasn't horrible it just lacked good preparations and seasonings. I would say all in all that this was an experience that I wouldn't want to repeat. We may try it again at some point in the future but it won't be put high on our list. read more

We got a seat at the chef's table on a misty August night and I still remember the meal (it is November now) and hope to return next summer. I had an amazing bee's knees with the addition of some local peppers infused in the gin from the excellent mixologist who was acting as host and chef helper as well that evening. Very perfect oysters. Shisito peppers that reminded me why those ever ended up on menus anyway. A tasty rye flour based gnocchi that was new on the menu and has likely evolved by now to an outstanding dish. Perfectly prepared locally cultivated or foraged mushrooms (I don't remember the varieties). Small bites perfectly prepared in a beautiful space with an owner chef who is happy to talk or not as you prefer. I was with my partner and we were trepidatious about sitting at the chef's table at first (basically a long bar facing into the kitchen area), but in retrospect it made for a much more food centric experience as we could watch everything being prepared and learn (upon asking) about the preparations and the sourcing and the chef's background and hopes and plans. What an amazing little restaurant in downtown Augusta. We had a four course "chef's table" experience. There are six chairs that sit in front of the chef at a "bar". We could see how she was preparing our food as well as others. As she cooked she explained how she uses products which are locally sourced. Some of her products are from very small farms. The menu changes almost nightly as a result of the products that are available at the time. I started with roasted red pepper soup that was to die for, so flavorful. I then had a savory crepe with shiitake mushrooms with chèvre. Wow, this was so delicious with the goat cheese. It melts in your mouth. I then had the scallops which were sautéed to perfection. They were presented with bacon lardons over a small bed of lettuce. They were absolutely delicious. I then splurged for the chocolate fondue. Beautiful presentation of big luscious black berries, strawberries, a couple of toasted marshmallows and a small cast iron dish with mouthwatering chocolate ganache. A domino effect is not always a bad thing. In fact, Augusta is demonstrating that with this newest, and hands down best, culinary delight. After downtown Diner moved to Water St, Ottos opened, Coffee House, Cushnoc, and now Oak Table. The chef most recently came from Congress Squared and serves his menu to a limited seating at the oak table overlooking the Kennebec river. But the sizable bar and lounge accommodates first comers. We were lucky to get a seat at the table on an early Saturday and watched him prepare our food while gazing at sturgeon breeching on the river. We each had the 4 course tasting menu which is the way to go and a bargain at 40 something bucks! Highlights were the cucumber kimchi salad, local beef skewers, local mushrooms, spicy (mildly) roasted cauliflower, scallops and especially the Char (replaced monkfish on older menu). The cheese sticks from Pineland Farms were good but sort of pedestrian after all the other phenomenal flavors. The bartender is also very welcoming and an experienced mixologist with a menu of his own very interesting creations. We are going back very soon! read more
