This was a wonderful place to get deep fried seafood. It was the freshest deep fried seafood I've ever had and I am redundant as my sister says but that's OK it was good deep fried seafood excuse me my sister corrected me it is superb deep fried seafood. Had lunch there with my Dad after a hard day's work. I gotta tell ya, best fried chicken EVER! It packs so many flavors plus the chicken is juicy and fresh. The only thing that didn't catch my attention was the fries. Nothing to different about them. To fix that I would suggest getting a side order of Brown Gravy and dipping the fries in the gravy. It literally doesn't get better than this. The fried items aren't greasy or heavy at all. The seafood I'd fresh and delicious. Pricing is beyond reasonable and staff are a well oiled machine. We basically paid $17.95 for French fries & a roll. There were 3 clams, 6 small, small shrimp, 4 scallops and 5 French fry sized pieces of fish. We stopped by on our way from Portland to northern Maine. We ordered the fried clam "appetizer" :) , the haddock lunch with rings subbed for fries (extra 75 cents) and the 1/4 lb lobster roll. There wasn't a line when we arrived, but there were short lines at various points while we ate. The line did move very fast as advertised. The food was hot, fresh and good, but not of the quality that we had last night in Portland. Breading was a tiny bit bland, and we preferred the larger fillet of haddock vs these small, individually breaded, bite-sized pieces. The clam and haddock/onion ring portions were huge for the price. The onion rings were really flavorful, and the lobster roll was good. The clam strip appetizer ($4) could easily be eaten as an entree if you could talk one of your fellow diners into sharing a few fries or rings. The place was very clean and cheerfully decorated. I am in love with this seafood restaurant! I am from Maine, so I know good, fresh, seafood when I taste it. The Red Barn has the best haddock that I have ever tasted. I enjoy their fried vegetable platter, too. My husband loves their chicken and we often get the Family Meal which they say feeds 4, but we have fed 2 hungry adults, 2 hungry teens and 2 hungry children with it and STILL had leftovers! Amazing! Where else can a family this big eat for under $25.00!? And the owner, Laura, and her brother, Pete, are so nice. They give of themselves so much and give to charities too. I AM a big fan of the Red Barn, I LOVE their food, especially the clams. One of the guys at work loves to order and go pick up for a few of us here in the office. Often, I order the lobster roll. I do not like mayo, nor am I supposed to eat it. This is the THIRD time I have ordered a lobster roll with NO MAYO, only a slice of lemon, but when it was delivered to me it is full of mayo. I know most people love that but I just don't. Other than that, I have never had a bad meal at the Red Barn. Service is always over the top and Laura is , of course, Laura. Over the top hostess. So of course I will order again, but the next time, I will have to find something else to order. Unless I happen to be right there for my meal, I will not take the chance of another ruined lobster roll. :( read more

We enjoyed the atmosphere, it was incredibly cute and family-friendly. There was a lot of seating, and the place was entirely accomadating for a large group. The food was tasty, not amazing but flavorful and good, but not particularly unusual or unique. The food was high-priced for a small amount, although that's to be expected for lobster and other seafood, but it was still expensive for our party. However, it was hearty and filling, and that is much appreciated for our constantly-moving family. The staff was helpful and efficient- we arrived and ordered on a busy Friday night (with around 20 groups present) and were able to order within several minutes. Our order of a lobster roll and soup came out after in about 3 minutes!! It was a very well-run venue, and that alone deserve recognition. And where do you get the best seafood chowder in Maine? from my Grandma! but Grandma aint around, she got a condo in Florida. So Buddy, now where you gonna get your chowda? No worries. I will tell you. Here's how us locals do it. You go to the Red Barn in Augusta Maine and tell them you want some real Maine Seafood chowdah with big shrimp and haddock and you want big scallops and big lobstah claws with a layer of golden butter on top! Buy a quart. Take it home. Heat it up in a big sauce pan. Eat some. When your full then Eat some more; cause it's good, really good. If you have any leftover then Put your chowdah in a bowl in the fridge. When you wake up, early of course, ready for some hunting or fishing, Heat up the bowl of chowdah and eat All the rest of it for breakfast, because Chowdah's always better the next day and you don't want anyone else to get it. So you have your chowdah... Then You will now know what it is like to be a downeaster being in the greatest place on earth and eating the greatest food on earth. It's that good. I tried the chicken basket, too, as other Yelpers recommended, and I wasn't impressed: There wasn't really much seasoning on the chicken and I didn't notice anything unusually good about it. Have been wanting to try this each time we go to Augusta due to the reviews and finally found it and made the arrangements. Met friends from NJ here while they were on a job interview. Over $100 bucks for the 4 of us. I've lived in North Shore MA most of my life and know seafood, having dined at great seafood places in Essex, Gloucester, Ipswich, etc. Was hoping to find a good place like those on the coast but unfortunately, cannot recommend this one. The 1/2 pound lobster roll was $26 and did not seem worth it. Nothing huge or special. Soggy roll with too much mayo. The onion rings had a really odd taste to them, I think perhaps heavy on the salt and corn meal maybe? They were not really hot and got even worse as they cooled further, kind of like cardboard. Friends had clam strips and lots left over; either trying to be polite and didn't like or maybe they just gave you a lot? They didn't say, but we decided to try another place when they return. They did have the "stew" also which we were told was the same as the chowder (not thicker?) They did not rave about it, and I didn't ask.
