The Red Barn is a legendary Augusta, Maine restaurant. A fixture in the community, if you will. They've been a part of the Augusta landscape for decades (since '77). What are they famous for you ask? Well, seafood...of course. Specifically, the lobster roll. My boyfriend loves the lobster roll! I had the popcorn chicken basket with crinkle fries that I could eat everyday if given the choice. The seasoning and breading are just right & fried until golden brown without sacrificing safe cooking or flavor. Another one of those busy places-it's a restaurant that attracts locals and tourists. Several members of our family are fans of Red Barn's chicken, haddock and fries so we make it a point to dine in when we are in the area. Food quality has been consistent but prices are definitely up. I think they offered smaller portions and more options for dipping sauces. Service is quick and friendly. We have been going to the Red Barn for 20+ years, and we recommended to everyone. We won't go anymore really bad food now. We had the chicken nuggets, fried haddock, and french-fries. The only thing good was the french-fries, The fish and chicken was the worst we have ever had, if it were better I would think it came from a supermarket. So this was always one of my favorite places to eat. But somewhere along the line the batter changed. Weve been coming off and on for years. A couple years ago we threw most of our food in the trash because it just didn't taste good. Today we decided to give it another go. The fish was ok but definitely didn't taste like it used to. The chicken wss horrible. We brought some home to my daughter who also always loved their food and she tossed it in the garbage. Its ok but I doubt we will go again. One year ago we found the Red Barn & loved it. 365 days later here we are again!!! 1 hour 15 minute drive from Old Orchard Beach. The time to get here, the gas used makes no difference. The Red Barn is one of Maine's great treasures. The owner Laura is such a giver. Her food trucks go to Nursing homes Veterens home & every meal given is for free. Laura is a live walking Angel. We ordered dinner to pick up since they were closing within an hour. Place was very busy. Our food smelled amazing and looked forward to bring it home. We ordered the fish & chips, and scallops. By the time we got home it was about 30 minutes so everything had steamed up and was a bit soft and not crunchy, seasoning was ok too. I'm sure it would've been better if we had sat and eating our meals there. So next time we hope to do this. read more

This place is hopping. Huge outside seating area so many options table outside ,tables in shelters ,games lots of parking. A good menu. I regrettably did not get the fried chicken or seafood but next time will do better. They both looked so good. I did get a photo of someone else's. We got the homemade onion rings a large order could last 2 days it was a very generous portion and so good. The cheeseburger got a great review as did the chocolate shake and coleslaw. The grilled chicken on a gluten free bun was just ok but I get that I was at a place that specializes in fried food so I won't judge too much . I will say I was baffled that it was pieces of chicken not a whole filet which makes it harder to eat as the chicken kept falling out. The GF bun was not the best but that's how those things are . A family tradition!! My kids grew up in mid coast Maine and have since left the state. Every single time they - and/or my grandchildren come to, a stop at The Red Barn is mandatory! Today was that day. Mixed seafood and fried veggies are the standard order with an occasional fried shrimp or scallop snack added. Everything is cooked to perfection! Delicious! Maine in a bite. They sell Moxie and yummy whoopie pies too. We get those to go because we can barely finish the meal. It's a nice sized portion and many times we just take the fries home for another time. This visit I saw shakes added to the menu - while I know they have to be delicious, we didn't try them. The service is professional and friendly. Food is cooked quickly and even when the restaurant is busy, we never have to wait long. I love the community involvement and, specifically, support of our veterans. The outside seating area has grown a lot and now even includes a couple of weatherized buildings. read more

Loved the option to choose between baskets (with fries) and pints (no fries). We tried: * Scallop and shrimp pints (both were really fresh, and the scallops were huge) * Deep-fried veggie basket (generous mix of mushrooms, zucchini, broccoli, bell peppers, and onions. Broccoli and mushrooms were the standouts) * Lobster roll with fries (still good, just not my personal preference--had large claw meat and I usually like smaller chunks and a buttered, grilled bun) * Black raspberry shake (classic and delicious) Massive outdoor seating area with plenty of picnic tables. A splendid time was had by all! What a gem. I had a wonderful experience and tasty food. The lobster tail nuggets and whole belly clams were so clean tasting! We had fries with our meal and those were abandoned in favor of the proteins--there was a ton of food for the two of us--we even took some home, and we just ordered a normal portion. It's nothing fancy--we ate in the car--but the mood was jovial, thanks to the good natured gals who got the food out. Get the lobster nuggets--so darned good! Stopped for lunch after a hike in the woods. Wife had Lobster roll, I had a fish sandwich, we split Onion Rings and Fries..all were fantastic and cook perfectly. The staff were friendly and helpful. The outside tables were plentiful and the weather was perfect for eating outside. They had a space on the wall to put your pets names that had crossed over the rainbow bridge, very touching. We added our girl Lucy's name to it along with our boy Nicks name as well, both the best girl and boy. If we lived here we would be fat because we'd eat here everyday!! read more

Whenever we're in the area around dinner time, we hope this place is open. Upon arriving, you will immediately notice the owners appreciation of our veterans' service. I was grateful for the display, in part because I echo their sentiment, and in part for the opportunity for our kids to learn a bit about US service members from someone other than me and other relatives. Inside, the atmosphere is friendly and efficient. It is a busy place and the staff are always on the job, always professional, and always friendly and courteous. For a place that moves so many customers through so quickly, I'm amazed at how clean everything is. The food itself is freshly prepared and some of the least-greasy fried food I've ever had. We love the fish. We love the fries. All at a reasonable price. There is some inside seating, at which we love to play the "alphabet game" with the local business advertisements. Of the six different plates we tried over TWO DIFFERENT VISITS, the food was consistently great. Mostly fried foods, lobster rolls are new to us and they were meaty with good fresh flavor. Mom is picky as hell and loved the scallops & clam strips. The ambiance setting does not look to impress as this is casual dining. Food & flavor 10/10 would recommend! More like 3 1/2 stars. My husband, a friend and I stopped here for lunch during Ironman 70.3 Maine weekend. My husband wanted to try the much proclaimed excellent lobster roll. We stood in line to order and found a seat around the side where many picnic styles tables with umbrellas were situated. Although the line was long, it moved quickly. My friend doesn't eat seafood so she ordered a dinner sized chicken basket. It was only a few dollars more than the lunch basket. To everyone's surprise, the basket was huge, probably enough to feed 3 people. My friend enjoyed the fried chicken. My husband ordered the lobster roll. It was at a hefty price of $27 including 1/4 pounds of lobster meat. The lobster roll was reported to be "okay", "nothing special" and could have been more flavorful. So for $27, he was "underwhelmed". I ordered the mixed seafood basket (oyster, shrimp, scallop and fish). It came with French fries and a roll. The basket was piled high but mostly due to a large biscuit buried underneath the fries and fried seafood on top. Everything was cooked well any not greasy...all absorbed by the roll below. After some much needed seasoning with salt and pepper, it was good. The restaurant supported veterans with poster boards in 2 locations showing local veterans that gave up their lives in the various wars. They also had a swing for individuals in a wheelchair. So they also support inclusion which was nice. But, I probably would drive out of my way to eat at this restaurant. read more

So today I was just at the Red Barn and the food was not good at all. The haddock was real strong that we couldn't eat it! Also the chicken was way overcooked and most of the baskets was fries. The fries were overcooked too! Very disappointed! We've been coming here a lot over the years and the food was good years ago but not now! I don't think we will ever come back here again. Really great Maine lobster roll, best of our trip. Lots of sweet lobster, great roll, and just enough mayo. Also got the seafood chowder, which was overflowing with fish and lobster. The service was welcoming for us and our dog. Got asked how we were doing, and a few staff greeted our dog too. It's definitely a great combo when the food is great and you feel welcomed too!
