This is a favorite local pub here in Augusta. One of the few places offering up an Irish menu (it gets busy quick on St. Patrick's Day!) Lots of beers on tap to try including local beer from some of Maine's finest and a good selection of mixed drinks and wine of courser. The food is standard pub grub. I've had eaten here for years and the food is consistent, portions are generous, and you certainly won't leave hungry. There are stick-to-your-ribs bangers and mash, the Guinness stout beef pot pie is popular (comes out with a puff pastry topping the size of your head), and this is one of the few places in Maine where you can get a Scotch Egg. I like the Cornish pasties myself - they taste like grandmas home cooking. I recommend starting with the highland bites with a tangy mustard sauce to dip in or the spinach artichoke dip with lots of tortillas. I was in a big group on my last visit and we all just ordered a bunch of apps and nom'd on them family style. Wings were amazing too, cooked well and seasoned perfectly. The servers are super friendly, your drinks and food comes out quickly, even when they are super busy. This makes a great lunch stop for working professionals in the downtown businesses. They offer live music regularly and on those nights it can get loud, not the best if you want intimate conversation. But, if you want rollicking Irish music around friends and beers - this is the place. The establishment is fairly large so they can accommodate groups, and there is a screened-in deck (that is also heated for winter dining). The atmosphere is similar to what you'd expect in a local Irish pub. TV's scattered around the place, the benches at the long large tables appear to be repurposed church pews so that's neat. They definitely have local regulars and the owner is usually around, everyone is welcome here and you will have a good time while eating and drinking with your crew! My boyfriend, myself, and our dog were doing some traveling and although pups cannot sit inside they were more than happy to accommodate us outside. We stopped by just for a little bite and a couple of beers...nothing crazy just wanted to sit and relax for a bit after some exploring. I'm not sure how typical for Maine, let alone Central Maine to have a strong Irish Pub. Solid selection of drinks and local beers. Oddly some of the micro brew selection was from Portland, Oregon? Had a few local musicians playing but not Irish. Still talented and beautiful to listen. Good selection, small which allows for perfection. Seemed the food was canned and boxed but I can't confirm. My review stars are more for atmosphere and the tenacity of the owners to take such a risk in Augusta. I'll go back, I've stopped by after work for a few beers and will continue. I never thought it would be possible for an Irish pub to fail St. Patrick's Day, but the Black and Tan certainly came close. I tried to enjoy a meal with family on the day where everyone is Irish, and I honestly wish I'd gone somewhere else. Despite being busy, it took almost 20 minutes after being seated for our waiter to arrive. When he did, it looked like he had just been hired 2 minutes before coming to our table. He did not know the menu at all, and could not tell us what was in many of the specials. My mother in law, who is allergic to peppers, ordered the "Irish Sausage Roll" appetizer, which In traditional Irish cuisine is a sausage wrapped in a light dough. What she got instead was an American sausage roll grilled in onions and peppers and served in a hot dog bun like you'd get at the country fair. FYI Black and Tan, This is not a traditional Irish Sausage Roll and should not be advertised as such. Because we were not told about this, and because of the allergy, we attempted to send it back but the waiter began arguing with me at the table that there is nothing we could do. Only after demanding to speak to the manager did he come back and offer me 50% off their mistake. Then my corned beef and cabbage dinner order arrived. For $14 a plate at a restaurant geared at traditional Irish cuisine, you would expect a decent meal, right? Wrong. A plate with a piece of toast, several massive heaps of veggies and about two tablespoons of ice cold corn beef. Not even close to being worth the price I paid. In fairness to the establishment, it was a very busy day and they seemed short staffed. But as an Irish pub on St. Patrick's Day, I expected far better service than what my family received. The food was blah at best and the service has a lot to improve upon if I'm to return again. I'll give them two stars though because the drink specials for the day were great! This was such disappointment. The bar is very cozy with wooden slab tables and old church pews for sitting. A huge selection of beers and whiskeys ends the list of good aspects. The food was such a letdown. We started with beer battered mushrooms. They were greasy like the deep fry oil was not nearly hot enough. The hubs had the steak and cheese sandwich and I had the cod BLT. Between the premade mustard sauce for the mushrooms, the premade tartar sauce for my CBLT, and the premade coleslaw, there wasn't much cooking, more assembling, that went into our meal. My cod was greasy, the potato chips were greasy, and while the hubs' sandwich looked good, it was quite bland. I was very disappointed with my meal (Oct 2022). 2 boiled sausages on a plate served with instant brown gravy that was way too salty and over reheated mashed potatoes. The mashed potatoes did not taste real, but I could not tell - because they had been reheated so hot- I could not eat them. Very disappointed considering the price they charge for this meal. Not a bad place to go to! Took my girlfriend here to try something new and it was great! We had some trouble finding seating but found the 2 person table right near the stage which by chance had a great live band playing. The good was great and they have lots of local and non local beers to try. The service wasn't bad but definitely could see some improvements. Not sure if they were under staffed or if it was decently busy, but it took awhile for the appetizer and the drinks. The Black & Tan is a favorite in our house, as are their cornish pasties! They have a great beer selection and our servers are always wonderful. We love that their live music starts earlier so our two toddler daughters can enjoy it, since they love music and dancing! If we make the mistake of telling the girls we are going there, forgetting it is a day they are closed, we may as well go home because a tantrum will ensue.
