This is definitely a tavern atmosphere which is very charming for a lot of people, but my husband and I aren't drinkers. Nonetheless, we heard good things about the food so I thought we'd give it a try. We were greeted right away by the bartender who couldn't have been nicer. She was a delightful lady and served us also. I ordered the French onion soup and the bacon and Gouda mac & cheese. My husband had the state fair sausage sandwich. The food was really excellent. I was quite surprised. The cook brought it out and he was a very pleasant gentleman. The French onion soup had a deep rich broth that was really delicious. The bacon and Gouda mac & cheese had a very rich flavor of Gouda cheese, which was wonderful, but a very heavy meal which I couldn't eat much of because I'm such a lightweight. My husband enjoyed the state fair sausage sandwich and said he would order it again. The tavern is right on the river literally and you can sit outside and watch the river go by which is very charming. It was a very hot day so my husband and I decided to sit inside and the only choice inside was either a barstool or a very hard bench, which is the only reason I didn't give this restaurant five stars. I was in town for business and this place was near my location so my colleague and I decided to pop in for lunch. The first day I ordered a buffalo chicken sandwich and a bowl of french onion soup as the side. Both were really good. To drink I just had a can of Dr. Pepper. The second day, we go back in, the waitress comes over to us and says would you like a Dr pepper again. I thought that was pretty remarkable that I had only visited one time, the day before, and she already remembered us and was ready to serve. That speaks well of the attentiveness of the staff. We spent one night in Waterville on our way to Bangor. Too tired to go on, we stopped for the night. The front desk person (Melissa) recommended The River Jack Tavern in Fairfield so off we went. So glad we did! The bartender was friendly, as was the chef making our meals. My husband ordered the Italian sub and I (who rarely eats beef) ordered a shaved steak with provolone, grilled onions and peppers. The meals and drinks (beer and margarita) were SO good! Margarita was strong. The second one was even stronger! The place is very welcoming. A nice back patio on the river. There were some children with their parents enjoying the patio and the view. The vegetarian options here are delicious. The curry is spicy, but yes please! My husband gets burgers and he has yet to complain... what is a stand out, is the service. They have made mistakes, but own them and make them right. We've only ever gotten take out, and the food travels (Albion) well. When we go pick up, the staff is super congenial. Very cool, very small place. Funky, laid back atmosphere with a deck right on the river. Large bar for such a small place. Menu is not huge, but a good variety of choices except seafood which is a little odd in ME. Looking forward to coming back this summer and sitting outside on the deck. Service was impeccable. Stopped in for take out in between softball games. Food prepared quick and it was delicious. Chicken quesadilla was large and filled with diced chicken peppers onions and tomatoes.
