A pub named Fat Toad has the best lebanese food in central Maine? Indeed! What a surprise. We've passed this non-descript joint 100s of times and finally stopped in because it was the only place open on a Monday. The amiable chef-owner is from Lebanon and offers several lebanese special dishes not on the menu. The inside is nicer than the outside, but the small wrap around back deck is where it's at. And we were allowed to carry our small dog back there in the shade! The chicken shawarma was delicious with thin toasted pita crisp instead of soft, excellent. And the hit was the special kibbeh in labneh (yogurt) sauce with a unique rice recipe, including tiny whole wheat pasta noodles. The local beer list was small BUT there was Fiddlehead IPA on tap, a Vermont classic! Worth a special trip. read more

If you are looking for a local place, this is a good one. They have typical pub fare but also in house cooked Lebanese dishes that are fantastic. All of the food is great actually. However the owners expect good behavior and consideration of other patrons, which is not asking a lot. The atmosphere is very honey with a rustic flare. read more

The food was great. We had the baba ganoush (sp?) for an appetizer and my husband had the Kebbeh special (which was a kind of meatball in yogurt sauce). I tried both and they were excellent. I just recently went here with my Husband for lunch. I was SO EXCITED that there was Lebanese food here!!! The babaganoush (I'm not sure how to spell it) was AWESOME and the hummus plate was excellent. I'm pretty sure we were served by the owner and he was very pleasant, warm, and friendly. The back dining area had a nice ambiance and I could see that they had a nice outdoor deck to eat on in the warmer months(which I will be trying for sure). I love this place. It has always been a good in terms of pub food, but the new owners have also added some Lebanese specials to the menu. They still sell great pub food, but I've never been disappointed by the Lebanese offerings. The shawarma has been my favorite so far, but they frequently add new dishes that I like to try. The owners are very friendly and provide great service. They draw a good crowd on the deck on Wednesday when they have live music. Prices are very reasonable. read more

Do not listen to any negative comments... if you read them you will realize you are dealing with Rookies at best. This is a great local bar. Staff is friendly and social... Food offerings are aligned with the local needs and portions are plenty. Cribbage readily available and tv visibility is adequate. Solid alcohol offering that will satisfy any drunken Irishman. Came by with my folks for a couple of brews and appetizers. The menu consists of pretty standard pub fare... we had the nachos (with house-made chili on top) and the buffalo chicken quesadilla. Both were good and we cleaned the plates. There's a very decent selection of beers on tap too in addition to wine and spirits. I think it's pretty neat that this was a house that was gutted and made into a little pub. It's warm and cozy and the bar tenders are super friendly. I hope this place really takes off because it'd be nice to see them stick around! read more

I'm a local, was looking to try something different. The drinks were fine, the waitress slash bartender was attentive enough. There was a couple at the end of the bar whom I assumed were the owners maybe? The lady asked me how everything was but did not introduce herself as an owner. For all I knew she was just another customer and that was strange to me. The burger I ordered was overdone and nothing special. My husband ordered cheesy fries and the cheesy fries had clearly not been put back in the broiler to melt. The price of the beers were fine, atmosphere is pub cozy, but the weird interaction with the owner/other customer turned me off, as did the poorly prepared food. It offers an extremely cozy, pub-like experience in the otherwise quiet town of Farmingdale. I went here on St. Patrick's Day, and I'm glad I did. Despite it being what has to be an incredibly stressful day for a fine drinking establishment such as this, both the service and food was enjoyable. I got the reuben on special with a Jameson and ginger and didn't regret either decision. They were just what I needed to get into the St. Patty's Day spirit. Well worth a trip to Farmingdale. Oh yeah, All in. We arrive, meet a cool as* lady who snapped our picture outside..we are off to a "great" start. We grab a table on the deck with 2 chairs. A single male waiter buzzes by us for about 6 minutes. He stops asks us if we know what we want, we didn't have a menu and we said, give us a minute, that took 16 minutes until we saw him again. We then ordered a Blue Moon and a Irish Red, andwe decided to order food at the same time..steak quesadilla and a order of wings with extra blue cheese. 25 minutes after ordering, we catch the server passing and ask for another round. We observe a party of 2 males come and sit and then a female friend came 10 minutes after that. We are 55 minutes in after ordering, so we ordered another round. 10 minutes later he brings our beers, I ask, "Are we close to getting our food?". Our server says "yes". Then it happened at 90 minutes, the table of 3 that came 20 minutes after us is getting food served to them. My friend asked our server, "How is it the table next to us , who have 3 people and came 20 minutes after us are getting served their food? This waiter turned and yelled at my friend that I told you it would take 45 minutes and glared at my friend. I then intervened, ask for our "bar bill" and proceeded to escort my very large, very agitated friend out the door so no repercussions would occur. The accented server then started apologizing to my friend saying he would make it up us next time. He kept apologizing to deaf ears. WARNING. This establishment is NOT FRIENDLY TO PEOPLE OF COLOR. Just ok. We went for dinner on Friday, we got drinks fairly quickly but the guy didn't come back til our drinks were gone and we had to remind him we wanted food. We had a party of 6. Reuben was very dry and bread was charred. Burger was sub-par. Friends liked the chicken tenders. Fries were fine. Staff was more interested in chatting with friends and regulars. The service was laughably poor, ...the server had to continually ask what we'd already ordered, the food was wrong, then asked us to switch of meals( I guess she thought they were close enough) Replaced one sandwich with a burned one. Later the cook came out to join the guests and proceeded to talk about how she hated Gardiner, she was so loud everyone was forced to hear her ranting during the game. Really distasteful, left early. Not bad for what it is... I had the buffalo chicken quesadilla. It wasn't bad, but nothing great. The food is pretty average. My dad got a burger that resembled the properties or a black hockey puck. The smell of burnt food completely filled this cramped pub. At night there is not enough lighting at the tables. Only some cheap strands of lights and a lamp. Maybe this place would be good just for some quick drinks, but for a dinner for a family of four, this would not be a first choice... Sorry guys it didn't do it for me! read more

This place is amazing, I have never had a better burger. I ordered my burger med rare and it was extremely juicy, my wife had hers med well and it was just as juicy as mine. For those of you who eat a lot of red meat you know that's not easy to do. The only reason I gave 4 out of 5 is because of the lack of wait staff. Our waitress was great don't get me qrong , however she was the only one there between the bar and 5 tables so the service was good just slow. First off, I want to say that I never (and I mean NEVER) take time out of my day to write a review online, but I was so appalled by the service we received this past Sunday (11/13/16) that I just have to. My boyfriend and I have been to this restaurant about 4 times in the last year and didn't have much to complain about. We loved the bartender at the time and the food was decent. That being said, it was Sunday morning and my friend, boyfriend, and I decided to go out to the Fat Toad to grab drinks and food. We were prepared to spend money (as we always do) when we go there. As we walked through the door, we couldn't help but notice how unbelievably loud the music was. I'm talking blaring music. I couldn't even hear myself think. We start to walk over to the right end of the restaurant to our favorite spot to sit and the bartender says "Oh, I wouldn't sit over there...the music is really loud" and giggles to herself. There was only 4 people at the bar and one of the gentleman says to the bartender, "Why don't you just turn the music down?" In a snarky tone she replies, "Ha! No. This way I don't have to hear them talk." Clearly she did not show up to work that day to make any money. Yeah, that makes sense... That was enough for us. We walked out and took our business down the road. We will never ever ever ever be taking our business to this sorry excuse for an establishment again. read more

My cousin and I stopped here for a pint one rainy day. This is just a real old timey pub which was surprisingly fun. One of my favorite parts of the experience was the Pabst Blue Ribbon on tap! My sis and I stopped in after what turned out to be a really long, gruelling day and all we wanted to do was chill out in the corner somewhere and nurse a couple of rounds and share a bite. This place was JUST what we were hoping for. Now, I'm from L.A.., (douchebag alert), so I must admit I'm a little particular when it comes to watering holes. Whether it's a classic dive bar or a hipster joint I need to get a distinctive vibe. This place felt great the second we walked in; it has nice lighting- warm and low but not depressingly so-, eclectic but unobtrusive music that doesn't bludgeon you about the face and neck so you can easily talk to the people you're with, a nice selection of beers on draft (ten or twelve I seem to recall, with about half being well-known breweries and the other half unfamiliar. If you're like me (not a conventional drinker but also not a connoisseur; somewhere between beer snob and ice-road trucker), this is a great thing because your first round or even second can always be about adventurousness, all the while resting in the consilatory knowledge that if your initial overtures are a disaster, you can still salvage the evening in the wet embrace of an old familiar standby...like my love life. (I had a Harpoon IPA-deeelish, thank you- followed by a Pabst, and -wait. -I need to stop for a moment. Because any place that has interesting microbrews AND good old Pabst, immediately gets into the "proverbial pantalones" of my good graces.....if you know what I mean...and I think....you......do; by proverbial I do NOT mean proverbial, know what I'm sayin'?!!.......ahem... ..But where were we? This place is quite small (and I mean smaaall) and therefore rather intimate (it's a tiny house that was completely gutted and renovated). Literally feels like a house! Totally awesome! Lotta wood, no argument there. The bar, which is nicely positioned dead center, seats maybe ten people around it and there's roughly six tables. And thankfully, unlike a lot of bars where the regulars seem to have hijacked it, broken its will, and slowly transformed it into their own sort of collective living room of boozy dysfunctionality, this place had a nicely diverse but clearly harmonious and therefore CHILL clientelle. The bartender- an actually friendly guy- greeted us immediately and checked on us several times though we were at a table and not at the bar itself. After a bit the owner (she was adorable) came over and hung out with us for a few and gave us a little history on how the place came to be. You could totally tell the staff was happy and that a lot of pride and good energy was flowing through the place. (Like attracts like, you know what I mean? A place can't fake that, I'm sorry, they just can't. I don't care how many T.G.I. Friday's ads you show me of hip, affluent, gorgeous, staggeringly popular people lost in the throes of gene-pool lottery-winning ecstacy, who, despite this, lead lives so bereft of imagination, so devoid of meaning, they ACTUALLY converge at a Friday's so as to have, any night of the week, without fail, THE GREATEST NIGHT OF THEIR OR ANYONE'S LIFE.....at of all places in the known Universe...a T.G.I. Friday's. Yeah, no. I don't believe it. Why? ..Why don't I believe it? ....Because, ohhh, I don't know....because I don't eat rocks, drool incessantly, and therefore aren't a complete imbecile?!!) ...I'm getting a bit off topic, me fears... Food was terrific for pub food (loaded nachoes with chicken), and the place was as cozy as all get out.. (Correction; cozy as get the hell out now. I mean it. All of you. Scram.) No joke, it's that cozy; I went in for a beer and left dressed as a giant mitten. One more thing; I'd be remiss for not mentioning that their bathrooms were a religious experience. (No, I wasn't escorted out by security, they're just awesome bathrooms.) I have personally voted this the #1 friendliest pub in all of New England. The wife & I stopped in on our way to Hallowell and were blown away by the service we received. Not only did one of the owners greet us at the door, but she proceeded to find us the two empty seats in the Pub (at the bar). But it did not end there. The other patrons at the bar were just as friendly and welcoming - conversing & suggesting beers, telling stories and listening to ours. Although we did not have dinner, we snacked on nachos - awesome! We've made a pact never to drive through Farmingdale without stopping at the Fat Toad - if even just to say "hello". read more
