As we say in Minnesota, "ohferyum". After eating lobster rolls all week on Mount Desert Island, my hubs says this is the best he had our whole trip. Really big pieces of lobster. The bun was nothing fancy, but you're not there for the bread anyways. I think this place is always busy, but they keep the line moving and there is a ton of parking and outdoor seating in addition to what is available indoors. Only a short ways off of I-95, and worth the trip. And please don't leave without a whoopie pie! Onion rings were thin and very crispy - more like what I would call onion straws. What can I say that hasn't been said before. This place is so awesome most of the time. Honestly this place has been a favorite of mine for almost 2 years when I first bite into the best and juiciest of chicken that my eyes have ever seen. The service once at the counter is fast and pleasant. The chicken to which they are mainly known for are one of the best I've had. The French fries are cooked to utter perfection. I would love to say that all their food is wonderful but I can't. The family and I came up to Augusta one glorious, sunny Tuesday, it's 77 out, and we needed some lunch fixings for our picnic. Searching through the options around Augusta left me flummoxed, but on spotting nearly 200 reviews, 4.5 stars with seafood options my mind was set with no idea of what to expect. Pulling up to packed lot a few miles out of town was a surprise, but in seeing all of the people and smiles let me know whatever was to come, it's worth it. We ordered the mixed fish basket with a lobster roll little to know how good-sized the servings are. There was no eye rolling when asking for water cups either. Always bonus when trying to keep added sugar away. My family and I devoured the fried mixed-haddock, clams, scallops, etc. basket plus the lobster roll. All of it was delicious, the fries and roll with the fish basket was a nice surprise that my son helped vanquish. Of a special note, I consider the fried scallops the best I've ever had. Overall, boy does this place put Bob's Clam Shack in Kittery to shame. Get up here and try it out. You'll not be disappointed. read more

It's been a while...too long actually! I was in Augusta today and decided this was the day to get over to the Red Barn to pick up a quart of seafood stew for dinner. Picked one out of the cooler and honestly gulped at the $29.99 price. What if it was like many other supposed seafood stews or chowders, loaded with potatoes and skimpy on seafood? Not to worry people...this was loaded with seafood (including lobster chunks and claws) and I don't think any potatoes or minimal at best. I added some sea salt as a personal taste, and some light cream as suggested on the label. This was absolutely delicious. Can't imagine better and only sorry I couldn't stay for lunch when I was there. Laura and her personal story, as well as Laura and her team are exemplary and the Red Barn should be a destination for you if you're anywhere near Augusta, Maine. Ordered large onion ring and told not offered at the New location....though on menu and we could have ordered 2 small to = a large. Kind off odd. Anyways, on to main...huge portion of chicken and well breaded and cooked. No question great value for $$$$. One of my all time favorite places to eat. The owner, Laura, is such a caring and giving individual. She goes out of her way to give to those in need. Always having benefit dinners where the proceeds made that night help out a local family in need or that going through a rough time. The parking lot is huge with plenty of space and extra parking in the field if needed. Also during nice weather and if it's crowded inside enjoy the outdoors while eating your food with picnic tables outside. The food is always cooked well and tastes great and the speed that you get your food even during a crowded day is another reason this place is one of the best. You just about get your drink and sauces and sit down when they call your name. Faster than fast food at times even:Its always tough to choose between the fried clam basket and the chicken basket but both are delicious. The one complaint about either basket would be the fries are plain crinkle cut fries you can find anyone frozen and make yourself. The clams and chicken are the stars of their basket though. Give their seafood stew and/or lobster roll a try as well, you will be happy with either. The food can get pricey but it's what you would expect seafood to cost. Anyone in the area or going through the area should give this place a try. A must eat restaurant in the Augusta area. If you come from afar make sure to put a pin in the map showing where customers have been from, it's amazing how many people from different places have been here. read more

You order inside and then can either eat inside or outside at one of the many picnic tables! Most of my group got lobster rolls which were delicious! This is my favorite place to eat in Maine. I celebrated here after getting sworn in as a lawyer years ago and have many other fond memories. Fried seafood can be tricky. Some places cook it too long and the results are an expensive disaster. I have never had this problem at Red Barn and have had just about all the seafood on the menu. The lobster rolls are great too. This was our second time eating here. It has great local "buzz". The locals are right! The people were very helpful and kind. The vibe is community oriented. The food was good. Great lobster roll. Tons of fresh meat and minimal bread and mayo- the way it should be! Came in around lunch on a Saturday- packed with all locals. Is off the beaten path of highway but worth the drive. The staff is very nice as well. Grab a seat where you can- seat yourself. The chicken basket is hands down best around. You can't get any better than this moist tender chicken and the batter crisp crunchy and bursting with flavor. The fried seafood is a wonderful medley of sweet meat bursting into your mouth with each bite. It includes delicious fresh clams scallops shrimp and fish. I miss the corn chowder. It was my favorite with smokey bacon and sweet corn. The staff are always friendly and inviting. The owner is always supporting some great local causes and the families of those suffering tradgedy. Having been born and raised in Maine, I know that this is practically sacrilegious. We are in Maine, there is no reason to serve a lobster roll with chunks of lobster that are frozen in the middle. Either the lobster is pre-frozen or their refrigerator is set way too high. It changes the texture of the lobster, it changes the whole experience. Someone with a discernible lobster pallet will be able to tell the difference. I ate the whole thing anyway, because I wasn't about to put up a stink during the lunch rush. The coleslaw was delicious. Lob roll, coleslaw, and bottle of water was about $14. That's pretty reasonable. It was quite busy at lunch. Very down home experience, very nice staff, very quick, the fried plates looked great... but I'm bummed about frozen lobster. read more

Should you order a lobster roll 50 miles inland, on Riverside Drive in Augusta at that? Hell yes, I say, especially if it's at Red Barn Drive-In. I've heard so many positive things about this eatery, but I've been remiss in visiting mainly because it's a bit out of the way from my usual Capitol area travels and business. However, an old colleague who I haven't seen for months suggested dinner and when he suggested three choices, one being the Red Barn, I knew the time was right to make my first visit. Let me get this out of the way first; this isn't a white linen and table cloth kind of place. Why you ask? Because I'm always amazed at the dissonance on YELP that comes from the clueless reviewers expecting five-star dining in NYC, when they're reviewing take-out food on the side of a Maine thoroughfare. This is a take-out restaurant with above-average take-out food, with elements that go far beyond that category of eateries. It's one reason they've been successful and in business since 1977. Take for instance my lobster roll. Contrary to my own prejudices, you can have a lobster roll inland that far exceeds a seaside lobster shack. In fact, the Red Barn's lobster roll is better than many I've had at some of Maine's iconic and highly-rated lobster roll eateries. Toasted hot dog bun, ample chunks of what tasted like fresh lobster, lightly-dressed w/ mayo. Oh, and the young lady at the register asked me if I wanted lettuce, which I deplore on a roll, so kudos for that. The seafood stew was outstanding. Chunks of fish, scallops, shrimp, and lobster claw meat laying on top of a rich broth, with potatoes. Perfectly seasoned, too. And at $5.95 for a cup, this was a nice deal. Of course, I was pulling out all the stops (sans dessert), so I had the fries, too. They're the frozen, crinkle-cut variety, but deep-fried perfectly and crispy (not greasy). My lunch date enjoyed his meal of deep-fried clams and fries, also. If fried seafood or lobster isn't your fancy, there are burgers and chicken fare, too. Given the beautiful mid-week August day, the kind of 80 degree day w/ low humidity that you dream about during January northeasters, we opted for the outdoor seating option. Nice little picnic area, with the umbrella-shaded tables. I understand that their ice cream is also a treat, but given that I was well-over my calorie allotment that will have to wait 'til my next visit. If in Augusta, or nearby, seek out the Red Barn Drive-In. You won't be disappointed if you're down with drive-ins and take-out places, like I am. read more
