Thank you Yelp for directing me to this little hidden gem! We were on our way from DC to ME and started getting the lobster craving around Augusta, and The Red Barn popped up on Yelp. It's nothing fancy, they're very military-centric (including a 10% military discount) and, most importantly, the food was delicious! My BF and I split the "crustacean elation", which is the foot-long lobster roll that comes with a massive side of fries. After eating all that sweet meat I had zero space left for them, however. We sat outside on the pup-friendly patio on a chilly evening to devour our roll. So good. Do yourself a favor and stop here! You won't regret it. This is the correct place to come to for authentic Maine food. There's not a lot that one can say that hasn't been said already. I had the lobster roll. Seriously large amounts of properly cooked, fresh Maine lobster. It was mixed with a little mayo, served cold on a grilled, split top hot dog bun. This is the only way that a lobster roll should ever be served. Unless of course, it's gigantic and requires a larger bun. At $10.95, it's a good buy. You get 1/4 lb of fresh lobster meat. I also sampled some fries, which were crinkle cut and cooked to a golden perfection. Usually the crinkle cut are very soft and mushy. That was not the case here. Another person in my party got the fried clams. They were also properly cooked and very soft. Not chewy at all. For dessert I had a whoopie pie. At $1.25 it is an absolute steal. I would say medium sized, but still a great value. The cream was fresh and sweet. The Red Barn Drive-In has a nice outdoor dining area with several large picnic tables both shaded and in full sun. Inside seating is also available. They have a lot of other items on the menu as well, including some seafood chowder that looked out of this world. They have a large variety of beverages both at the self serve soda fountain and in bottles. This is a great place to come for some really good Maine seafood. My friends and I stopped here for our first meal in Maine and absolutely loved it. The close-knit staff was extremely kind and helped us with some recommendations. We got the haddock and shrimp baskets and thoroughly enjoyed it. For the price, you get a ton of food. We only finished half of each and had a meal for later. As I pulled up into their parking lot, I could smell the fried food and it made me salivate. But I am from PA, so when in ME, you have to eat a lobster roll. Right? I order the 1/4 pound lobster roll with lettuce. When I got my roll, it looked small. That's because all the fried food dishes I saw were ginormous. But as I ate my lobster roll, it was meaty and it didn't have too much mayo on it. It was solid. Have never had a bad meal here! I work nearby and The Red Barn is always a lunchtime option for me! The food is always fresh, comes out fast, and the portions are beyond generous, for me, I get one meal at Red Barn and can eat it for the next three days! I recommend the lobster roll, simple, classic, with or without lettuce (I go without) and it's reasonable as far as the price of lobster rolls go, this is a great deal! The fried clams are amazing, fried veggie basket is awesome! If it looks like there is a huge crowd (there usually is) don't let it both you, they have such an efficient system you'll be in and ordering before you know it! The staff are all friendly and you can tell they have fun and enjoy their job. The family is also well known locally for their philanthropic endeavors and their respect for our military is like none other. Couldn't go inside due to COVID, but the ordering process was a very well thought out and they had extra helpers on hand. Unfortunately, their menu was hidden by a canopy, but that's okay -- we knew we wanted 1/2lb lobster rolls (x 8). They were quick and delicious. Just the right amount of mayo. Not overwhelming. The outdoor tables were clean, stocked with plenty of napkins, and had canopies to protect us from the sun. There were also "camp tents" you could eat inside for more privacy. Parking was ample. But the best part? The owner lady stopped by our table to thank us for eating there and to ask us if SHE could get us anything. You could tell she was genuine. At a winter fund-raiser a few years ago, Laura, the Red Barn owner, was ladling out her seafood stew in little cups, for free. It turns out she does a lot of that, for all sorts of good causes. The stew is a thin milky broth with piles of fin fish, scallops and lobster, served piping hot. It is wonderful. Order as large a bowl as you can afford. Everything on the menu is prepared as you order it, and it shows. The fried food, and the menu is mostly fried food, is battered. I grew up on fried food in crumbs or corn flour, and that kind is what I prefer. It is a matter of personal taste. The food is crisp and light-colored. "Good of its kind", as Mrs. Rombauer said. Omg! The best seafood restaurant ever! If you like chowder, I highly recommend their amazing lobster chowder; It's loaded with hearty chunks of knuckles and claws. For me, it's their Haddock basket, light, flaky fish perfectly breaded, not too heavy and fried to perfection. The rest of the fam ordered a hearty chicken basket, rolls, slaw, a basket of chicken and of course, fries. Everything was cooked perfect. Very dog friendly. Dog was greeted immediately with a bandana and a smile, and the owner stopped by with a friend to greet him later. Not a big country music fan, but the duo performing that day was still a nice touch. The various charitable endeavors of the place a big plus too, but aside from any of the extras, this is a great place to eat.
