    cut on my temple
    Andres M.

I travel full-time for work and visit a new barber in nearly every city I visit. In the last year, I have been to 20 different barbers across 15 different states. Some are better than others, but what they all have in common is COURTESY and INTEGRITY. All the rave reviews for this barbershop led me to believe I would be getting an elevated barber experience. It was anything but. I've never been treated as carelessly and disrespectfully as I was by Michael S. From check in to check out, he barely spoke to me, beyond a cursory "how are you," which was the last hospitality I was shown for the next 30 minutes. When I told him what I wanted- a clean skin fade on the sides with length off the top- he scoffed at me, which immediately put me on edge. He didn't offer any suggestions or solutions, but told me that I barely had "enough hair" for that. I decided to give him the benefit of the doubt, and he started cutting. After 20 minutes of silence, he showed me the mirror. I asked him to clean up some things and he rolled his eyes- I was clearly bothering him. Apparently he knows my hair better than I do, but again, he didn't offer any solutions, just silence. I then had to ask him to clean something up AGAIN, to which he once more scoffed. Sure, he might have done what I asked- but he acted as though I was an annoying friend asking him for a favor, and treated me as a nuisance rather than a paying customer. He treated me roughly and actually cut my temple with his razor. He was kind enough to wipe my neck with a wet towel before sending me on my way, without bothering to brush off any of the hair on my face. My haircut is uneven and I will have to find another barber to fix it, as I will not be returning here. The experience was overall unsatisfactory and unsafe.

Disorganized scheduling wasted 40 minutes of my day. My original appointment was cancelled by QG. I was not called but texted. They offered to reschedule over text. I responded with my selection of their date and time offers but no one confirmed. Drove 20 minutes to be told I didn't have an appointment. Next time be more clear and follow up when you cancel an appointment on a client.

    The beard trim was clutch

A+ service. I enjoyed my massage and beard trim. Every man must try this spot if you are in town!

I needed a haircut before a wedding and needed to be make sure that it was done right. I've heard good things so I thought I'd try The QG. Not only did they ensure that the cut was on point but I realized there was so much else to do like the restaurant/bar and was able to get a few accessories as well from their menswear department. The wedding was a success!

Marya Wedding Gown Design and alteration

I truly feel so lucky to have found Marya design. I bought a wedding dress, which was a simple…read moredesign but had a massive train, which I didn't feel particularly comfortable wearing for my relatively casual wedding that didn't have a ceremony. When I was buying the dress, I was told that it would be impossible to remove the train while maintaining the shape of the dress, so I had resigned myself to needing to add a bustle and would just wear it bustled the whole time. When I told Marya what I hoped for, she didn't blink an eye before saying she could remove the train and keep it even all the way around. When she showed me the dress to approve at my second appointment, I was truly speechless. It looked like it was designed that way and looked even better than I could have imagined. So already, she was a true wizard to me, but I ended up using her again to add a lining to another dress I bought for the courthouse, which I loved but had an inner bodysuit that was totally visible through the white fabric. She took out the bodysuit and added a lining so it was not only beautiful, but also way more comfortable to wear. She is an absolute magician, so professional and so incredibly talented. And reasonably priced for the highest quality. What more could you ask for?

I had Marya take in my dress at the waist/hip area and add a bustle, and she did a terrible job! If…read moreit weren't for the other tailor who was able to salvage my dress at the last minute, Marya would've ruined my $3k+ dress! First, after she took in the dress at the hips, a bulge in the fabric formed at my butt. According to another tailor, the bulge formed because Marya didn't alter the dress correctly, not because the dress didn't fit me correctly. It cost me $300 to get rid of the bulge, and finding a tailor to do this last-minute work was so stressful! The hip alterations also caused the buttons to come down my back and hips at a diagonal because Marya only took in the dress at one side, causing an asymmetry. Because she could only finish the hip alterations a week before the wedding, I had to remove all 12 dress buttons to fix the asymmetry. The other tailor would've had to completely reverse her alterations to properly fix the problem, which would've taken weeks. Second, she only took in the top layer of the dress, without taking in the under layers. This caused the larger under layers to bunch up or fold underneath the tighter top layer. It looked like streaks going down the back of my dress! Third, the first time my maid of honor tried to bustle my dress, one of the bustle buttons fell off! I had to rush to sew the button back on, which was extremely stressful because I don't even know how to sew! Lastly, she damaged the beading on the neckline of my dress. Multiple beads on one side of the neckline had fallen off when I got the dress back, creating a noticeable hole. Overall, Marya's poor alterations caused me so much stress a week before my wedding. I highly recommend that anyone with an expensive dress go elsewhere, because according to the tailor who was able to salvage my dress, Marya didn't have the skill or experience to correctly alter my dress!!

The massage therapist was great, and I really enjoyed my massage. I wish they gave you a heads up if you are not a member that it is a shoe free space.

TL;DR: Don't buy a gift certificate/card from this place…read more Zen and the City really appears to be set up for members and isn't equipped to interact with outsider customers. Unsurprisingly, most of the negative reviews are from people trying to deal with their gift certificates or gift cards since they are not able to provide reasonable service to people unfamiliar with their procedures. Throughout the process, I had to chase the owner, Gary, repeatedly over text and phone in order to get any information. A list of things I wish I knew before attempting to use a gift certificate here: I was alone in the building, not just the room, with an unknown man. Zen and the City is a therapist-owned establishment that has appointment-only booking for services. In light of this description, I probably should have known that I would be alone with my massage therapist. Except the website contains none of that information, which I only learned about after the appointment, so I was blindsided. My massage therapist was a very nice man who did his best to make me feel welcome and taken care of (Thank you, Anthony. You were the only good part of this whole experience!), but it was hard to set aside how uncomfortable it was to be alone with a strange man without knowing before that no one else would be there. The gift certificates (physical) and gift cards (e-cards) are redeemed in different ways. The website doesn't make it clear (either in the description or during the purchase) that physical gift certificates are only redeemable for a specific service, and that the gift certificates and gift cards are considered two different products. When I got the certificate for Zen and the City, neither my father (who bought this as a gift) nor I knew there was a difference between the two until after I had my appointment and was told otherwise. If you redeem the service-specific gift certificate for the wrong service by mistake, Zen and the City will not inform you of the mistake when you book your appointment and will instead pocket the remaining money without further services or refund, even after their error is pointed out to them. I suspect they would have prevented me from redeeming the gift certificate for something that was MORE money than the one I used, but when I accidentally used it from something that cost LESS, I was only told afterwards when I couldn't fix my mistake, or receive a refund for the balance. The initial confirmation text message is meaningless. It doesn't accurately reflect that an appointment's successfully been made (because you get a text regardless), and it does not result in you being correctly signed up to receive text messages. Instead, they will contact you by email, no matter your indicated preference (which they don't know anyway because they never ask for your preference). If there is a problem with your email address, they will not use your phone number to follow up. There will be no further attempt to contact you. I'll be honest and admit that I made quite a few mistakes in attempting to deal with Zen and the City, and I accept the responsibility of those mistakes. However, I think it's important for future potential customers to know beforehand that this is the kind of business that is happy to take advantage of your confusion, your mistakes, or your unexpected illness (check out their sick policy). It's up to you whether you want to risk giving this place your money and time.
