Honestly this place just knows how to do solid food. We came in twice during our visit to LA and both times did not disappoint. Atmosphere is a great level of charming while still modern. They have nice decor on both sides of the establishment and a lively bar that see's strong use. I prefer the booths myself but all seating is solid. The service is probably what surprised me the most. It's incredibly fast for the type of food and what I would typically come to expect from this type of sit down restaurant. It's extremely quick service. From food to drinks it all comes out of the kitchen with great pace which impressed me. Now to the food, I think all around it's high quality and tasty. First time around I got the chicken pasta and second time the club sandwich. Both were tasty and delicious. The ingredients taste fresh and the portions are large. All in all I don't think you can go wrong with many of the options. Definitely a place I'd head back to! read more

Made a last minute reservation for an early dinner on Sunday. The restaurant was relatively quiet when we showed up at 4:45pm, there were only a few other tables of patrons with us (party of 7). We ordered a round of drinks, including the Bee's Knees, the House Red and another cocktail, as well as an assortment of apps and mains. Their happy hour runs Mon-Sun which was cool! The HH brussel sprouts were disappointing with mainly leaves, but the hummus was delicious. Folks in our group loved the Salmon Picata and Fried Chicken. I had the Miso Salmon, it was good overall but the sauce was on the sweeter side, which unfortunately masked most of the miso taste. Topped it off with a warm toffee dessert with ice cream. As we were leaving, we saw that a lot more guests sat in their bar area, such a cute ambience. Kind of reminds me of a library. Would love to return and grab a drink there next time. read more

Other than the chips being stale, everything else about my meal was really yummy. I ordered the shrimp tacos which came with a delicious chicken tortilla soup. I like the ambiance of the place a lot and was shocked I hadn't noticed this place earlier. It's tucked away, but I think that's what makes it special. dineLA menu at $35/person for 3 courses First visit during this summer's dineLA week. First thing I noticed was that the parking in front is extremely tight. There's some additional parking in the rear, and a few spaces on the street, but can be tough. Also, the WiFi was very spotty. Gigi waited on us and the service was good. It was a super busy night, and the staff were really hustling. We started with a couple cocktails/mocktails which were well-made. The three of us ordered off the dineLA menu, and the appetizers and entrees were very good. Gigi did a great job making sure that the various courses didn't come out on top of each other. Unfortunately, they were out of the Warm Butter Cake, however it was substituted with a delicious Italian Lemon Cake. I have a feeling that The Proper is a lively, locals place with good vibes and tasty drinks/eats. They offer a daily Happy Hour from 4-6pm, Martini Mondays, Taco Tuesdays, and Wine Wednesdays. I loved the atmosphere in here! It's like we're dining in a library. I really loved the service too. I decided to share an entree with my boyfriend and the kitchen was kind enough to split it for us. So what you see in the picture is my portion of the entree and my boyfriend was the same. That stuck with me because I don't think I've experienced another restaurant that does that for you. I live pretty far away from here, but this is my go-to for dinner and/or drinks when I'm in the neighborhood. I love that it kind of feels vintage and classy yet really comfortable and friendly. The burger it self was a pretty large one, I'd guess a half pound patty as it had a lot of heft. It had the usual burger toppings, cheese, tomato, pickles, lettuce and a mayo. Taste wise, it was kinda plain and dry. Perhaps it was a bit overcooked as I got it to go. It was hot and freshly cooked - just needed another flavored condiment. Perhaps a nice bright and bold yellow mustard would have done really nice on this. The fries were excellent! They were the battered style, which allowed them to hold up well and maintained a great crispy bite to them. This is a quasi fine dining restaurant. It's a bit casual but has some fine dining type dishes. We visited for the Dine LA experience. I love a good short rib and it was featured on the menu. I would have to say this was one of the best spots for Dine LA. They had a 3 course meal for $35. We went on wine Wednesday and enjoyed an $11 glass of white wine. Basing my review off of two visits to the Proper, we came back a second time because we had a great time on our first visit. Unfortunately the second didn't live up to our expectations as one of us ended up with an upset stomach and struggled throughout the night. It was probably the prime rib sandwich, as that was the only meal that was not shared. We had just moved to the area and were exploring the eateries in the neighborhood. During our first visit, we did not have a reservation but luckily for seated at a nice window seat. I'm a big sucker on where we sit, so that was a big plus. On our second visit, we had a reservation but got seated in a middle table, which I was not very pleased with. We absolutely loved the vibe of this place; it felt very cozy like we were hanging around someone's nice cabin. The raspberry drink and Bee's Knees cocktails were tasty, a little pricey but expected in this area. Here are the items we ordered during both visits: - Off-the-menu crispy rice - by far my favorite on the menu! They should make this a regular item! - Crispy sandwich - tasty and I enjoyed the tenderness of the chicken along with the crisp. I asked for a little side of honey to add on a bit more sweetness, which I think was the right move. - Prime rib sandwich - good the first time, but it caused an upset stomach during the next visit. This was a real bummer - Jambalaya pasta - it was ok. Slightly bland, too much tomato. I honestly like the jambalaya at Yard House better lol! - Warm butter cake - YES all the way! Did we need it? No. Did it make us happy? Yes! So, both visits were quite different, which I think averages to a 3-star rating. I feel I've tried most items on the menu that I wanted to try, so don't think we'll be back in a while, but likely do another visit if something new is on the menu. read more

We tried this hidden gem last weekend. When we first pulled up I wasn't so sure because it's in a random strip mall - but then the minute we walked in I knew why it's so well reviewed! The vibe in both the dining room and bar is really great - unique and vibrant, casual yet elegant. Our server, Jose, was so friendly and warm from the get go and the food was super impressive! Two of us got the filet mignon special and two of us got the salmon picatta special - al 4 of us were blown away by our meals and thought the prices were really fair. We were trying to get to a movie so we didn't have time to try any appetizers but the desserts were really terrific too - especially the salted caramel butter cake (or something along those lines!). So let me be upfront, I have eaten here many times over many years, but no more. We have frequented the restaurant many times. The food is decent....I would give it a B. The cocktails are better. My frustration is that most times I come into the restaurant, the hostess seems to always sit us in the main dinning room...it has very little character in my opinion. When we ask to sit in the bar, it is always an ordeal. This is despite many tables being empty at times. Several years ago, this was not the case. Tonight, my wife and her friend made reservations and asked me to join them. This was just after 5pm. We get there and despite the restaurant being well less than half full, they insisted that we share a small table that should only seat 2. When I asked why we could not be moved to a table that was adequate for three people, the hostess only commented that these are for other guests. I get it, but I seriously doubt that it was going to fill up over the next hour. I could be wrong, but I am tired of the lack of service by the hostesses. To make sure that my wife and her friend had a nice dinner, I choose to walk home. At least they would have enough space for their meal. If you choose to go, I hope you have a nice time. It may be a little less crowded as neither me our are guests will be taking up any space. read more

The ambiance is very nice - cozy, traditional but hip, and quiet enough to have a conversation. Every time I have been here, I have been seated in the upstairs bar area, I imagine it's the same in the main dining room. The food is very good (we really enjoyed the crispy Brussels sprouts with capers), and drinks are unique and tasty. The Steak Frites came with a nice peppercorn sauce that was fluid enough to sop with the fries, not thick like a condiment. This is a critical distinction! lol It's a very nice restaurant and may become my new place for my once-a-month dining experience. Dining out has gotten expensive, however, so be prepared to spend $100/ person including tip if you get an appetizer and drinks along with dinner. You could get out for less, but be prepared otherwise. They lost a star because they failed to include a birthday candle on the cake, as per my request on the reservation. The Proper Restaurant and Bar is definitely worth making a trip for! This highly impressive restaurant is nestled in La Canada Flintridge and is the perfect pit stop before heading out to the Descanso Gardens Carved event. We made reservations online for 4:45pm, which was a very easy process to do online. I love how beautifully decorated the restaurant is. It felt like we were having a casual dinner and cocktails at a friends house rather than a restaurant. Once we arrived, we were greeted by the hostess and shown to our table. The staff immediately brought out iced water and were very quick to refill our glasses if they noticed they were getting empty. The happy hour here alone is worth coming for, which runs from 4pm-6pm daily. For an appetizer we started with the crispy truffle Brussels and I am obsessed! They are crispy, crunchy, with such a great flavor that I cannot imagine eating Brussels any other way. Seriously a must if you eat here! Next, I ordered the rose house wine that paired perfectly with my braised short rib. How great is this dish? So great that I practically licked the plate clean! The meat was so tender that a butter knife could cut through it with such ease. The red skin mashed potatoes were absolute perfection. The natural au jus was the chefs kiss. You can taste the freshness of the herbs and combination of flavors. The seasonal vegetables were cooked tender perfection. Every single bite was consistently as good as the last making this dish one you must try! The runner up dish is the Scottish Salmon seared to perfection with a crispy skin with the lemon butter sauce making this dish one of my favorite seafood dishes of all time. The asparagus was cooked tender perfect with a nice crunch. The red skin mashed potatoes were nice and fluffy complimenting the meal and making this dish an absolute foodie delight! To cleanse our pallet, we had the raspberry sorbet for dessert and omg it was incredible! The sorbet is infused with an orange liqueur and topped with fresh raspberries. I was officially hooked after one bite! This is definitely a dessert worth trying. Service here is incredible and unlike any other. The staff is great at checking in, making recommendations, and getting food out to you quickly without sacrificing taste or quality. I will definitely be back! Highly recommend trying this place! I have a lot of feelings about the experience I had at the Proper. I was drawn to this restaurant by its beautiful interior and I love supporting woman-owned businesses. The interior is inviting and warm. The volume level on a busy evening was not too bad and the lighting was warm but not dark. A lot of things going right here. We were celebrating my birthday with friends and had made a reservation ahead of time. Our party of five arrived punctually and were told our table was not yet ready. We ended up waiting twenty minutes and were mostly in the way of servers carrying food out while we waited for our table. We were told the previous party was slow to move on. When our table was ready, the host told us that there would be a reservation at our table shortly that evening and if we could be sure to leave before the table was needed for that reservation. Happy Birthday to me, right? The food is delicious, but the staff likely will not let you enjoy it or finish your plate. The urgency with which they wanted to return plates to the kitchen was comical. It didn't seem to be the need to clean the table as much as they just needed the plates back in the kitchen because they were very selective about which dishes they wanted back in the kitchen. Our appetizers were barely half eaten when servers came looking for our plates. Every server on the floor that day stopped at our table multiple times trying to take plates as we were eating. It was disappointing as the birthday girl that I was unable to finish my delicious dish because I felt guilty that I was holding onto their plate for too long. So I ended up sending my food back to the kitchen since it seemed dire they get the plates back quickly. It was a very disappointing experience, and I don't mind spending a good amount of money on a wonderful dining experience, but I do mind spending money at a dining establishment that was late to seat for our reservation, asked us to eat quickly so that we could clear the table for the next reservation, and then proceeded to rush us through our meal . When dessert came around, we ordered a dessert to share, and the waitress brought our food out and said that ordinarily, she would've put a candle in it for my birthday, but they didn't have any . If she simply laid the plate down and wish me a happy birthday, it wouldn't have stung as much as we don't have candles for you. But could you please hurry up and eat this dessert so I can get this dish back to the kitchen. I hate to leave a review where I'm not raving about the food because it was absolutely delicious if the servers will let you actually eat it. This experience didn't provide the intended celebration. We were sure to leave our table before the reservation that we were reminded we must clear our table before, but oddly, by that time, the restaurant had mostly cleared out, so it was a moot point that we needed to eat quickly and move along. We paid our $400 tab and left a generous tip, but will probably not return because it's clear that management has a focus on clearing tables and moving tables out quickly . The real bummer was that it was actually my birthday, and I was really excited to try this restaurant as we're local to the area and pass it often. My advice to the owner would be to meet with the staff about the experience, and picking up the queues of when plates are ready to be returned to the kitchen- certainly not when they're full of food, and people are mid-mouthful. I recently revisited the Proper. The last time I was here it was pre-covid when it was a gin bar. Hubs and I sat at the bar which was fine because we could watch the Dodger game. It wasn't very crowded to be honest which surprised me. They had some good music playing and the bartenders were nice. Food was decent. I liked the cauliflower hummus and hubs and I shared the barramundi which was delicious. The drinks were fine but the biggest issue is the astronomical price of the drinks. Cocktails are over $20 and a pint of beer is $13. That seems VERY expensive. I would like to give them more stars but can't in good conscious. This working lady needs an affordable cocktail.
