The Proper Restaurant really is! Friendly service, attractive decor and good food make this local La Cañada business a winner. We're adding it to our go-to list after our enjoyable experience earlier this week. My French dip was scrumptious (au jus AND horseradish sauce served with) and my honey's jambalaya pasta dish was the same. Portions were decent and I had to take my generous side Caesar salad to go. Great vibe, but rushed pacing and forgettable food. We were excited to try this spot based on the ratings and menu, but our experience was just okay. The space looks great and has a cool vibe, and while the service was friendly, the pacing was awful. It felt like the staff was more interested in closing up for the night (rolling silverware, cleaning the bar) than taking care of guests. I even had to hunt down our server just to order a glass of wine. The biggest letdown was the timing of the food. Right after our Crispy Tuna Rice starter arrived--and before we could even get the share plates we had to ask for--the rest of our entire order was dropped at once. It crowded our already small table with the Miso Salmon, Short Rib Tacos, and Tortilla Soup all at the same time, which was incredibly frustrating. As for the food itself, everything was just fine but nothing stood out. The salmon and tuna starter were good. My wife liked the soup, but I wasn't impressed. We split on the tacos (she disliked them, I thought they were just okay), and the cocktails weren't very spirit-forward, though they have a decent wine list. I'm a bit of a French dip aficionado in Los Angeles. I've had Philippe's and like it, and I had Cole's before it closed. But by far, The Proper in La Canada has the best French dip sandwich I've ever had. It's actually shaved prime rib on a soft and not overpowering French role, and paired with au jus and a horseradish aioli. It's heaven. My wife and I decided to give The Proper a try after hearing good things and wanting to support a local neighborhood restaurant. Overall, we had a pleasant experience, but we ultimately left feeling that the prices just didn't match the overall value. The restaurant itself has a nice atmosphere. It has a comfortable, upscale vibe that makes for a nice dinner setting. The only downside was that we were seated directly underneath an air conditioning vent, which made it uncomfortably cold throughout our meal. For dinner, I ordered the short rib sandwich, and my wife had the three-taco plate, which included chips and tortilla soup. We didn't order any appetizers, desserts, or alcoholic beverages--just our entrées. After tax and tip, our total came to over $80. I completely understand that restaurant prices have increased over the past few years, and I'm willing to pay more for a great meal and experience. However, this felt like pricing I'd expect from a high-end standalone restaurant rather than a casual neighborhood spot. To be fair, the food was good. Everything was well prepared, flavorful, and enjoyable. I don't think the issue is the quality of the food--it's simply the value. Have been here for happy hour twice. Good offerings, I particularly like the cauliflower nachos and brussel sprouts! Brussel sprouts are so crispy and tasty. Ambiance is real nice and classy. This hidden spot in a small narrow strip mall, surprises guests with a beautiful, comfortable and cozy interior. The staff are all friendly, competent and determined that you have a great experience while you are a guest. I went with my book club for happy hour. The bar was full but we were welcomed to sit in the main dining room and enjoy the happy hour menu. The house wine was good and the menu was just big enough to have something for everyone. The best deal was the burger with the crispiest fries and a glass of wine or beer for $25. It was delicious! The Guacamole and chips were just ok. Deviled eggs were good but I thought a little pricey. We'll be back to try the spaghetti and some other great sounding entrees. We love everything about The Proper. My kids would eat here every night if they could. They actually fight over the *Brussel sprouts* and we have to get them each their own order (they are 5 and 8). They also love the chicken fingers, the fries are phenomenal and the chocolate lava cake is a must. As for my husband and I, he says the French dip sandwich is the best he's had in his life. And he is a French dip connoisseur! He's tried all the regular L.A staples--Philippe's, Cole's, etc.... But he says nothing compares to The Proper. Their burger is also wonderful. I've also had several of their fish dishes and have enjoyed them all. And you must try the warm butter cake. I'm normally a chocolate lover, but I dream about the butter cake from The Proper. I'm not a big drinker, but husband loves their Old Fashions and they have a fully stocked bar with lots of specialty cocktails as well. We love sitting in the long booths, which can comfortably fit our party of 2 adults, 2 kids and often 2 grandparents as well. The service is always wonderful and everyone is very friendly. My only complaint about The Proper is that I hate the parking lot. It's very tight and people don't pull up far enough. But that's a small price to pay for this wonderful local gem. read more

Honestly this place just knows how to do solid food. We came in twice during our visit to LA and both times did not disappoint. Atmosphere is a great level of charming while still modern. They have nice decor on both sides of the establishment and a lively bar that see's strong use. I prefer the booths myself but all seating is solid. The service is probably what surprised me the most. It's incredibly fast for the type of food and what I would typically come to expect from this type of sit down restaurant. It's extremely quick service. From food to drinks it all comes out of the kitchen with great pace which impressed me. Now to the food, I think all around it's high quality and tasty. First time around I got the chicken pasta and second time the club sandwich. Both were tasty and delicious. The ingredients taste fresh and the portions are large. dineLA menu at $35/person for 3 courses First visit during this summer's dineLA week. First thing I noticed was that the parking in front is extremely tight. There's some additional parking in the rear, and a few spaces on the street, but can be tough. Also, the WiFi was very spotty. Gigi waited on us and the service was good. It was a super busy night, and the staff were really hustling. We started with a couple cocktails/mocktails which were well-made. The three of us ordered off the dineLA menu, and the appetizers and entrees were very good. Gigi did a great job making sure that the various courses didn't come out on top of each other. Unfortunately, they were out of the Warm Butter Cake, however it was substituted with a delicious Italian Lemon Cake. I have a feeling that The Proper is a lively, locals place with good vibes and tasty drinks/eats. They offer a daily Happy Hour from 4-6pm, Martini Mondays, Taco Tuesdays, and Wine Wednesdays. Other than the chips being stale, everything else about my meal was really yummy. I ordered the shrimp tacos which came with a delicious chicken tortilla soup. I like the ambiance of the place a lot and was shocked I hadn't noticed this place earlier. It's tucked away, but I think that's what makes it special. I have been to this restaurant many times but this will probably be the last. My family of three had a reservation at 6:30 and showed up exactly on time. I asked the hostess if we could please have one of the at least three empty booths in the main dining room. She said she had to check with the manager. The manager then had a discussion with the hostess while looking at something on a screen and apparently we got assigned some seating. We did not get taken to one of the empty bigger booths but rather a cramped smaller table in the corner that is not what I asked for and really should be comfortably for two people. I asked the hostess again if I could please have one of the larger booths as they were empty. She said they were for larger parties. I then pointed out that two of the parties now sitting in those booths were in fact parties of three. She asked if I wanted her to talk to the manager again but by now I just wanted to eat. We ordered the Brussels Sprouts as an appetizer, two of us had the fried chicken, and one had the burger and a cocktail. The food was pretty good. I remember the chicken being better in the past. Yes, it is pricey for what you get but I would be ok with that if the rest of the experience was a positive one. I go out to eat a lot and where I sit matters to me especially in a louder restaurant like this one. From where I was sitting I could view who got seated at the booths I asked for. And guess what? Two of the three empty booths got seated with parties of three. The manager comped our appetizer without explaining why. Yes, this was appreciated, but what I would have appreciated way more was just getting my seating request when it was obvious those booths were in fact not reserved for "larger parties." read more

I loved the atmosphere in here! It's like we're dining in a library. I really loved the service too. I decided to share an entree with my boyfriend and the kitchen was kind enough to split it for us. So what you see in the picture is my portion of the entree and my boyfriend was the same. That stuck with me because I don't think I've experienced another restaurant that does that for you. Made a last minute reservation for an early dinner on Sunday. The restaurant was relatively quiet when we showed up at 4:45pm, there were only a few other tables of patrons with us (party of 7). We ordered a round of drinks, including the Bee's Knees, the House Red and another cocktail, as well as an assortment of apps and mains. Their happy hour runs Mon-Sun which was cool! The HH brussel sprouts were disappointing with mainly leaves, but the hummus was delicious. Folks in our group loved the Salmon Picata and Fried Chicken. I had the Miso Salmon, it was good overall but the sauce was on the sweeter side, which unfortunately masked most of the miso taste. Topped it off with a warm toffee dessert with ice cream. To be succinct, it's dive bar quality food at a premium price. I got the prime rib sandwich at 23 which was the same price as their signature burger because I felt like it was adequately priced. The sandwich taste more like a paddy melt than a prime rib; the meat was dry and not tender. Bread was sandwich bread, not baked in house so it was also had a very dry and tasteless addition to my premium price sandwich. Nothing on that sandwich made me feel like I was eating 23 dollars worth. I felt bamboozled. They charged me for the dry vermouth and olives for my dirty martini as well, even though the bar tender asked if blue cheese olives were okay and I simply ordered a dirty martini, which came out to a $20 dirty martini that also was very dive bar flavored and less than satisfying. I could have gone to a fast food place and got a more premium experience than this place offered and I'll leave that there. read more

Taste wise, it was kinda plain and dry. Perhaps it was a bit overcooked as I got it to go. It was hot and freshly cooked - just needed another flavored condiment. Perhaps a nice bright and bold yellow mustard would have done really nice on this. The fries were excellent! They were the battered style, which allowed them to hold up well and maintained a great crispy bite to them. This is a quasi fine dining restaurant. It's a bit casual but has some fine dining type dishes. We visited for the Dine LA experience. I love a good short rib and it was featured on the menu. I would have to say this was one of the best spots for Dine LA. They had a 3 course meal for $35. We went on wine Wednesday and enjoyed an $11 glass of white wine. Basing my review off of two visits to the Proper, we came back a second time because we had a great time on our first visit. Unfortunately the second didn't live up to our expectations as one of us ended up with an upset stomach and struggled throughout the night. It was probably the prime rib sandwich, as that was the only meal that was not shared. We had just moved to the area and were exploring the eateries in the neighborhood. During our first visit, we did not have a reservation but luckily for seated at a nice window seat. I'm a big sucker on where we sit, so that was a big plus. On our second visit, we had a reservation but got seated in a middle table, which I was not very pleased with. We absolutely loved the vibe of this place; it felt very cozy like we were hanging around someone's nice cabin. The raspberry drink and Bee's Knees cocktails were tasty, a little pricey but expected in this area. Here are the items we ordered during both visits: - Off-the-menu crispy rice - by far my favorite on the menu! They should make this a regular item! - Crispy sandwich - tasty and I enjoyed the tenderness of the chicken along with the crisp. I asked for a little side of honey to add on a bit more sweetness, which I think was the right move. - Prime rib sandwich - good the first time, but it caused an upset stomach during the next visit. This was a real bummer - Jambalaya pasta - it was ok. Slightly bland, too much tomato. I honestly like the jambalaya at Yard House better lol! - Warm butter cake - YES all the way! Did we need it? No. Did it make us happy? Yes! So, both visits were quite different, which I think averages to a 3-star rating. I feel I've tried most items on the menu that I wanted to try, so don't think we'll be back in a while, but likely do another visit if something new is on the menu. read more

This was our first time here. It's a sweet place, nice atmosphere and they have good food. But please don't use a two top table as a four top and pretend it's normal. Especially when one chair at the table would almost be touching the people behind you when seated. It truly was that close. How uncomfortable for everyone. It was very full when we got there so we sat down at the small table but I realized it wasn't going to work so I asked for a bigger one. It took some time but we did get an actual four top table. The large booths were all "reserved" according to the hostess. There were two booths open for most of the time we were there, so I question their reservations and their willingness to accommodate their customers. Seat two people on a two top, not four. I promise you, most of your customers will be fine waiting for a bigger table. That small table they tried to make a four top was left empty for good reason. It's for two only. And please state that reservations are encouraged to avoid this awkward situation. read more
