First of all, if you haven't been to Montrose, this was my first time, I highly recommend a visit. Main Street has an old-time feel, with plenty of cute restaurants and interesting shops. One of those restaurants is the black cow Café. The menu is very diverse with plenty of healthy and vegetarian options. I had the black bean burger, and it was delicious. I had planned on ordering the bean chili. I really appreciated my server who asked me if I ate meat, the bean chili did have meat in it even though it didn't say so on the menu as far as I could tell. She could've easily just taken my order, but instead she took the extra step to make sure I understood what I was ordering. All in all, I had a great experience here and would certainly recommend if you happen to be in the area.

Sweet Demi Lune Bakery & Café…read more Sweet Demi Lune Bakery & Café reminded me that we live for the wonderful experiences that remain to be discovered. After a wonderful lunch date with my wife at Raffi's Place (please read my review and thank me later) in Glendale, I decided to look for the perfect dessert. After scouting several nearby locations, I decided I was in the mood for a great cinnamon roll. Sweet Demi Lune Bakery & Café looked like the place that would deliver the experience I was seeking. SDLBC is listed as being in Glendale, but it's located in the historic Old Town of Montrose. That's beside the point; I only mention it because there are additional places to explore just up the street. We arrived around 3:00 p.m. on a Saturday, and there wasn't much of a selection left, including the highly sought-after cinnamon roll. The gentleman behind the counter greeted us warmly, and I immediately asked if that was all the pastries they had. He said yes. I contemplated leaving because of the nonexistent cinnamon roll, but I didn't want to be rude, so I decided to give the bakery a try since we were already there. So, we basically took half of what remained behind the glass display case: a Peach Almond Croissant, a Raspberry Pistachio Croissant, an Almond Croissant, and then my curiosity focused on a few lonely-looking pastries that were unfamiliar to my discerning eyes. I asked the gentleman what they were, and he replied with something that sounded completely foreign to me: Kouign-Amann. Kouign-Amann (pronounced queen ah-MAHN) is a traditional pastry from the region of Brittany, France. It is often considered one of the richest pastries in the world because it is made with just a few simple ingredients in generous proportions: bread dough, butter, and sugar. Figuring we needed a few more sweets for the road, we took all the remaining Kouign-Amanns. Two were the traditional version, and the other two were filled with crème and blueberry jam. We also ordered a Café Americano and a Café Mocha. While we waited for our drinks, I simply couldn't wait any longer. Like a kid on Christmas morning, I eagerly opened my gift and dug right into the Kouign-Amann. Hesitantly, I tore off a tiny piece with my fingers, expecting nothing extraordinary, and instantly gave birth to a brand-new experience that exploded in my mouth. The crisp exterior gave way to the soft, flaky center, followed by waves of what tasted like delicate honey. I tore off another piece and shared it with my wife. One look at her eyes told me she wanted more. By the time our drinks were ready, we had devoured one of the Kouign-Amanns and confessed to the gentleman behind the counter that we had just experienced pure ecstasy in the form of a pastry. Kouign-Amann is, in fact, one of the richest pastries in the world, so don't let the unfamiliar name keep you from trying one. The Café Americano and the Café Mocha were also exceptionally well prepared. With everything that's happening in the world these days, a simple yet profound experience like this reminded me how wonderful life can still be. Like Arnold said... "I'll be back." Enjoy!

What surprised me most was how much I enjoyed the food because I wasn't necessarily expecting such traditional Mexican flavors. But honestly, one of the best ways to judge a Mexican restaurant is by the salsa--and their salsa is seriously good. On our second visit, I ordered the carne asada plate, and my wife got the beef fajitas. Let me start with the carne asada: the flavors were authentic, the meat was delicious, and the handmade tortillas were a standout. They were so soft and fresh that I honestly think they were one of the reasons I kept going back for another bite. Everything just worked together. I also tried my wife's beef fajitas, and they had some really good, bold flavors. The vegetables, beef, and seasoning all came together really well. Overall, we've really enjoyed both experiences here. Great Mexican flavors, fresh handmade tortillas, excellent salsa, and food that feels authentic and full of flavor. We'll definitely be back.

UPDATE IN RESPONSE TO THE OWNER: I feel the need to clarify several statements in the owner's response because they do not accurately reflect what occurred that evening. First, the restaurant was not packed and every table was not occupied, as stated in the response. There was one larger party of approximately 10 people, and aside from that, only about two or three other tables were occupied by small parties of two or three people. More importantly, when I personally spoke with the owner that evening, the explanation I was given for the excessive delay was not that the restaurant was exceptionally busy. I was told that one of the cooks had called out and that the owner had to drive in from Santa Clarita, and that his wife was helping in the kitchen. The owner did tell me that I would not have to pay for my meal because of the delay. However, that does not mean the situation was resolved. After he told me the meal would be complimentary, I remained at the restaurant for approximately another 20-30 minutes, and my food still was not brought out. At that point, after already waiting more than two hours, I made the decision to leave without ever receiving or eating the food. I appreciate the offer to make the meal complimentary, but a complimentary meal that was never actually served does not change the experience I had. I am simply sharing what occurred during my visit, and I stand by my original review I have never once waited over two hours to get my food after placing an order, which I never received my food. I had to extend my parking twice and still had not received my food. I don't even know what the food tasted like because I walked out. If I could I would give 0 stars. When I called the owner to speak to him that made absolutely no difference because I was only given excuse after excuse and yet again my order was still not brought out. read more

Absolutely Incredible Authentic Breakfast in Glendale! If you are looking for a breakfast spot that goes way beyond your standard eggs and toast, Izba on Brand Blvd is a total gem! We came in for morning coffee and breakfast, and everything was ridiculously good. You can taste the authenticity and care in every single dish--it genuinely feels like a fresh, high-quality, homemade meal. We tried the syrniki (cottage cheese pancakes) served with fresh berries, and they were light, perfectly golden, and melted in your mouth. The shakshuka and rustic hash browns were equally incredible--full of deep flavor and cooked to absolute perfection. What truly blew us away, though, was the hospitality. On top of the food being spot-on, the service was exceptional. The owner personally came by our table several times throughout the meal to introduce himself, check in, and make sure we were enjoying everything. That level of personal touch and pride in their work is so rare to find these days. The vibe inside is cozy, clean, and modern. Will definitely be making this a regular weekend spot. I recently visited Izba. It's a place you come back to for the food, not just the atmosphere. The steaks here are genuinely impressive: juicy, cooked to the right doneness, and full of flavor. My favorite is the New York steak. It's rich, tender, with a perfect crust. The burrata with tomatoes was also outstanding. Following the cocktail hour, we went in to a different outside area, which had been set up with a large U-shaped table of wood. It was rustic, but lovely.. I have taken a picture of the menu so you can see what we had. Every single item served was made with such care and intention to bring out the very best in the vegetables as well as the proteins. How could a simple green salad be so delicious? Every little tiny tomato screamed sweetness, and the dressing was sublime. Individual egetables were served with accompanying side sauces, and everybody was raving about how great they tasted. Who would've thought a simple carrot could be so great? Or a simple wedge of sweet potato with a papaya mustard sauce? Salmon cooked to perfection served on little French lentils with a dollop of butter sauce.. The best of all to me was the steak with mushrooms and a Demi- glacé sauce on the side. Wow, was that delicious! The presentation of the desserts was another high point! I was so full by that point, but of course we ate them anyway. See pictures. Whoever the chef is here, they are a person of meticulous artistry offering down-to-earth deliciousness.
