My wife and I ate here about a week ago while visiting family in Los Angeles. The place is nicely decorated, the staff professional and attentive, the food very good, the portions large, and the prices surprisingly modest. We had eaten at Raffi's Place a few days before, and Asteria was as good (albeit, with a more limited menu) at about half the price. We will definitely revisit on our next trip to LA. read more

1 Star -- Even One Star Feels Too Generous I honestly don't understand how this restaurant has such a high Yelp rating. My family loves Armenian food, and after seeing Asteria rated around 4.7 on Yelp, we decided to try somewhere new for Saturday lunch. We drove 1 1/2 hours expecting a nice family meal. Unfortunately, I regretted that decision almost immediately. Parking was difficult, but that was the least of our problems. The real problem started when we walked in. No "Welcome," no "Hello," no smile -- nothing. The woman working there simply stared at us. Her attitude made us feel like, "Oh great, more customers." We felt unwelcome from the beginning. She was dressed very fancy, but looking upscale means nothing when basic hospitality is missing. Her attitude was so cold that we didn't even feel comfortable asking questions about the menu. When taking our order, if she didn't understand something, instead of politely saying "Excuse me?" or asking us to repeat ourselves, she responded: "Huh?" "Huh?" I seriously considered leaving, but after driving 1 1/2 hours with my parents and wife, we stayed. Unfortunately, the food didn't make things better. Several dishes were extremely salty. My parents couldn't even finish half their meals. My father said the meat was tough but kept eating some because he didn't want to waste the money. My wife took only a few bites because her food was so salty. I normally LIKE salty food, and even I thought it was too salty. The service during our meal was practically nonexistent. Not once did she come over on her own to ask if everything was okay or if we needed anything. Every time we needed something, we had to call her ourselves. It was also close to 100°F outside, and the restaurant was extremely warm. I couldn't even tell if the A/C was running. Meanwhile, she had a fan blowing on herself near the counter. Then, while we were still eating, she started taking one of our plates away. We had to tell her, "We're still eating," and she put it back. Then came the check. We were told that the tip should be left in cash. I normally tip around 20%, and I'm happy to tip more for good service. But after this experience, I honestly didn't feel like leaving a tip at all. I was so frustrated that I even considered leaving one penny to show how I felt about the service. My family told me, "Don't do that. Just don't ever come back." So despite being completely unhappy, I still left a 15% cash tip. To be clear, I didn't leave 15% because the service deserved it. I left it because I was done with the situation and simply wanted to pay and get out. After paying, I walked outside before my family because I didn't want to spend one more minute inside that restaurant. All I could think was: "Why did I drive 1 1/2 hours and spend my own money to be treated like this?" I don't know whether this woman was an employee, manager, owner, or connected to ownership. But if she's an employee, management seriously needs to pay attention to how customers are being treated. If she's involved in management or ownership, then that would explain a lot about the service we experienced. A restaurant can post beautiful pictures and present itself as upscale, but real class is shown in how you treat your customers. We weren't asking for five-star luxury service. We expected the basics: greet your customers, take their order politely, check on the table occasionally, and don't take away their food while they're still eating. Maybe the people leaving great reviews had a different server, came on a different day, or simply got lucky. I can only review what my family and I personally experienced, and our experience was nothing like what a 4.7 rating led us to expect. We drove 1 1/2 hours, received cold and dismissive service, ate overly salty food, had to repeatedly call the server ourselves, sat in an uncomfortably warm restaurant, had a plate taken while we were still eating, and were then told to leave the tip in cash. Despite all of that, I still left 15%. Would I come back? Absolutely not. Would I recommend this restaurant to family or friends? Absolutely not. If you're thinking about making a long drive because of the high Yelp rating like we did, I strongly suggest thinking twice. If you still want to try it for yourself... Good luck. First time patron of Asteria, and I must say this place blew every other Mediterranean restaurant I've tried out of the water. We made reservations just in case there'd be a wait on a Friday evening, but surprisingly the restaurant wasn't busy, a shame for them, but something we were grateful for. We ordered the baba ghanoush right away because I was absolutely famished, and we were also served a generous plate of hummus with delicious homemade chips on the side. The chips were salty and tangy, which paired perfectly with the hummus. I ordered the chicken breast and luleh combo, while my partner got the filet mignon with tzatziki, and everything was incredible. It was my first time trying chicken luleh and I can confidently say I'm a fan now. Perfectly seasoned, tender, and flavorful. The rice was cooked perfectly as well. The only thing I would've loved is a side of raw onions, but that's purely personal preference. What really says it all is that the entire meal was eaten mostly in silence and not a single picture was taken, which is completely out of character for me as a foodie. "Camera eats first" absolutely does not apply at this restaurant. The establishment is run by a lovely couple in the kitchen along with one server. It's a quaint little spot that feels warm and personal, and I already have a feeling I'll be coming back often. read more

Fresh, good ingredients, very flavorful, well portioned and served with a customer service to match the food. Armenian art and music add on a good ambiance that will add to your dinning experience. Great place to try some amazing food. Only thing is the parking. There is no parking lot so you have to drive around and find a spot. Overall I rate Asteria Restaurant a solid five stars. read more

Hidden gem!!!! We were going to another Mediterranean place, but that place did not have seating. So we quickly Yelped and found this place!! We parked in the street. I think they recently opened. There was nobody inside. Beautifully decorated and with a piano up in the window! We picked our table and was immediately served hummus and pita chips. I'm not a hummus person, but this fish was delicious, but the thin and crispy pita chips put the combo over the top! I wanted to try everything so we decided on the chef's combo cuz it had the lamb chop and other meats with rice and pita. Oh... don't forget the side salad that comes on the plate! I usually don't like salad, but these had the Persian cucumbers, tomatoes, and a wonderful dressing! Meats were tender and juicy. Of course the lamb was the best! Don't neglect the rice! Perfectly cooked! Even the roasted jalapeno was on point! We also ordered baba ganoush. Also amazing! Hummus and the baba ganouch is the perfect glue to hold everything together! We always visit Glendale at least every month to see my mil. And since it's the town to eat Mediterranean food we looked for a highly rated one in the area. This place came up and no doubt the food was great. Hummus, baba ganoush sides were delicious. We ordered the family meal and came with a variety of meats, a salad and rice. I am gluten free and actually also try to stay away from dairy, soy and some grains. Being at a restaurant sometimes I'll try any gluten free food to splurge but when asking about the chips that go with the hummus, the hostess/waitress said it's "Armenian bread" and I asked if it's GF and she said yes it's gluten free but said 'bread' and she couldn't or wouldn't tell me the actual ingredients so I couldn't enjoy the chips with hummus. I was able to try it by itself and it was delicious despite not having the chips. We are not Armenian and although we are familiar with the culture as we are often in Glendale, the hostess telling us it's 'Armenian bread' was a bit offensive. She also touched all our things place on the table as she was setting it, instead of respectfully asking us to remove them. Also, we had to ask for almost everything. Instead of having a servicing spoon already with the appetizers for sharing we had ask for each one, down to asking for a pen to sign the check. The meats were good especially the chicken kabob and chicken lule, the beef was just ok slightly salty and overcooked. It was also a hot day and we were all sweating inside the small restaurant, they didn't turn on the air for comfort. Also, the music was extremely loud at first and when she saw us talking she turned it down a bit but still loud. The type of music was not one that my family was fond of but respected as it was slightly a cultural type for the restaurant. STAY AWAY, HORRIBLE SERVICE. I went there for a meeting. Our server was rude and did not have any sense of customer service. We were given menus and told to order immediately which we did. She bought our check after our meal and told us that they're closing. While we're talking, she started to remove our plates and clean the table. Then stood by our table and just straight out was staring at us even before the restaurant was closed. Then she turned the music up so it would make it difficult to have a conversation and as soon as we left she turned the music off. This woman lacked basic customer service and humanity and there would be no way that I would ever go back to this restaurant. I found this place by accident, and I'm so glad I did. At first I was a little hesitant because the restaurant was fairly empty, so I read some reviews while I waited. They all said the food was great and they were absolutely right. The flavors were fantastic and everything was perfectly cooked, not overdone at all. Hidden Gem! I come to Glendale once or twice a month for business and decided to try some of the local restaurants. Well today, I found Asteria restaurant on Pacific Ave. and it did not disappoint. I was greeted by a very kind and polite server who took excellent care of me for the entire meal. I decided to try it because it already had a high rating of 4.8 stars on Yelp, which I truly believe now should be a five 5! When I sat down, they served me a complementary appetizer of hummus and pita chips that was delicious homemade and perfectly seasoned. I decided to try their chicken breast kebab, which was served with salad, rice and tomato and the chicken was cooked to perfection the entire dish was plated beautifully, and best of all I found the prices to be extremely reasonable. The ambience was chill and relaxed and I'd be lying If I didn't tell you I happily cleaned my plate. Asteria is definitely a find I told them I wouldn't change a thing and I look forward to coming back again and again. Found this out of the way place near embassy suites in Glendale. What a delight. They helped find us a parking spot (husband disabled). Food was unbelievable. We had the combo meat trio, chicken and steak, chicken combo and veggie combo. Ordered a side of falafel which was the best I've had since my trip to Egypt. Since everything is homemade ( sauces and hummus) we tried the baklava for dessert. I'm not a big fan normally of baklava but this was amazing. Working as a teacher in Glendale, I often pick up Mediterranean Kbob plates to go. I decided to try a new place on my list, Asteria. I ordered the chicken breast Kbob plates, a bit dry and overly spiced. The filet mignon plate meat was very stringy, almost seven-bone roast texture and not very tender. On Yelp reviews, the customer said they received complimentary humus, which was not included, only a 'yellow' and 'red' sauce for the chicken and beef. I called in my order at 2:30pm and told it would be 20 minutes. I did not leave the restaurant until 3:10pm. There were no other customers dining or waiting for an order to go.
