Magpie's Grill is a small family restaurant that serves different types of food such as salads, sandwiches, hamburgers, breakfast plates and Mexican dishes. It was a good experience to have with service quick and easy. It was not noisy and conversation was easy to have. The salads were plenty and fresh. Pancakes were excellent and sifts. Sandwich was triple decker but manageable! Great prices.

Came at 7 pm and had still quite a few people yet lots of tables and booths available. There is a huge selection of foods. Mexican, Italian, steaks, pork, beef, chicken, salads and more. Lots of beverages and also a bar in back with the football game on. Andy was our exceptionally nice waiter. Food came quickly and met another sweet waitress. Left full and with leftovers. Also good choices of beverages likr I got hot chocolate and mom got cherry lemonade. A warm ans inviting atmosphere with older music and so I loved it. The decor was also so cute and eclectic. Hearkens back to a simpler time.

First time in Magpies and I love it! The food menu is simple but the price is fair for decent savory food. We ordered the patty melt and steak! We enjoyed both! It is really the combination of the vegetables, cream cheese, and meat! Best patty melt I have tasted so far. The cut of the steak is pretty big and is good for the price! Customer service is great! The place may give an old vibe but it is clean as well as the restroom! I do recommend this place if you are looking for a simple dinner, leaving the place with your stomach full and satisfied.

Dear Hubby, Sweet Granddaughter, and I were in La Canada Flintridge for another visit to Descanso Gardens. We wanted something simple for dinner. Last time we went to Panera Bread, which was a let-down from previous visits, so we decided to try something new. Yelp reviews lead us to Magpie's Grill. I was expecting something a little more modern. What we found was an old school neighborhood kind of place. Because there was a football game on, DH wanted to sit in the bar area where various TVs were on. The menu was extensive - just about anything "American" or American-adjacent was offered. We decided to split an order of calamari, and a hot pastrami sandwich. DH thought that wouldn't be enough, so he also added a sampler app platter. We ended up taking food home! SG wanted mac & cheese. The kids meal portion was very generous, and even though the 4 year-old tucked in well to her meal, there were still leftovers for another lunch. Kids meals also come with a beverage included. Our server was very helpful and did all the things a good waiter is supposed to do. He promptly asked for our drink order, and offered to answer questions about the menu. Once the food came out of the kitchen he checked back on us to see if everything was okay / did we need anything else? He plied us with extra napkins, and brought to-go containers. He was very present, and we appreciated that. Foodwise, the calamari was prepared very well. It became filling, and when the other items arrived we abandoned it and brought the rest home. The pastrami sandwich was very good. I didn't realize that they normally crown the meat with cheese, so I had to peal off the layer and give it to DH, as I am off milk products. Still, the rest of the bread, pastrami, lettuce, tomatoes, and mayo made for a great tasting sandwich. The only down side was that the fries were a little undercooked. We would consider returning when in the area again. I could see this as a comfort food kind of staple for locals.

Decent food and friendly staff. The omelette felt underwhelming as there was very little cheese and chili pepper, but tasted decent. The fresh fruit was not ripe enough.

Totally solid diner/family restaurant. I was looking for something close to Descanso and came upon this little gem. I love the nostalgic vibe and solid food choices. I read everyone post about the Private Club and decided that was what I was going to eat. I loved my club and would definitely order it again. My friends ordered the Chicken Pot Pie, a New York Steak Salad and the Schnitzel. Everyone was satisfied and full. Service was fantastic.

My mother‑in‑law and our family friends had been before and spoke very highly of it. We originally booked a reservation for three people for Mother's Day, and when our friends became available, the restaurant was kind enough to expand it to six. They offered us a lounge area since they were fully booked, and we appreciated the effort to accommodate us on such a busy holiday. Parking was crowded because of the occasion, so we arrived a little late. Once we checked in, the staff seated us in the lounge setup, which had five couch‑style seats and one regular chair that did not quite match the arrangement. We asked if any other tables were available because the terrace looked fairly open, but we were told the lounge was the only option unless we preferred to sit indoors. We chose to stay outside, and although it felt a little unusual to see open terrace tables throughout our visit, we still enjoyed the atmosphere. Service was friendly and attentive. There were a couple of small hiccups, such as our seasonal pizza being forgotten during a server switch and our fries being left off the order. Everything else arrived smoothly, and the Descanso Member drink was a highlight. It was refreshing, flavorful, and a great value. Overall, we enjoyed our visit, especially the beautiful setting. I look forward to coming back another time to sit at their large bar for a cocktail and an appetizer.

The Black Cow Cafe has been part of my life since my college years, so when I came here now, it was always filled with nostalgia and a slowed pace over a calming meal. Opened in 1994 by a father and son, they embodied the community's "Main Street USA" vibe with a neighborhood diner where everyone knew each other, and you were served a soothing homemade meal during breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Did this cafe leave me with warm memories of the past, or did I cower from time's inevitable changes!? PURCHASE(S) Green Milan 16floz Drink ($7.95): My body needed something "green" and this sounded interesting. I thought it would be one of those health smoothies back in the 80s, but instead a frothy hazy light drink with a light grassy aroma and a middling leafy flavor. I didn't dislike it, but I wouldn't order it again. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&start=24&select=Uo_FrA9ezkxhIn4VnwEVtQ Vegetarian Omelette w/Country Potatoes & Sourdough Toast ($18.95): Made with avocado, cheddar cheese, mushrooms, Ortega chiles, pico de gallo, salsa ranchera, spinach, and topped with sour cream, an omelette was also on my eating bingo card. This smallish portion on the healthier side was packed with fresh goodness and fluffy eggs. The country potatoes were plentiful, nicely seasoned, but lacked the outer crisp I liked. The large sourdough toast with creamy butter and preserves rounded out the meal well. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&start=24&select=vDf51dNgOCoyIaPX_AOvrw Fish & Chips w/Coleslaw & Muffin ($17.95): Made with tempura fried Icelandic cod served with jalapeno tartar sauce, and Hawaiian coleslaw, the three fish pieces were crunchy, hot, and thick but needed more seasoning so the tarter sauce came in handy (no vinegar!). The coleslaw lacked much flavor and moisture, and the muffin was moist and warm. A minimal amount of natural lighting came in through the front glass windows and doors while a mix of recessed and track electric ceiling lights filled in the rest. There were no TVs nor could I recall any background music over all of the loud conversations. ATTIRE Totally casual, so I would normally be in a t-shirt, boardshorts, and flip-flops. OVERALL It was nice to revisit The Black Cow Cafe, and hoped to return soon. The menu was packed, the food was good, the prices were comparable, and the service was busy but manageable. Plus, I always preferred to support small local mom & pop businesses. I found very good value based on the prices, service, and experience noted above (TOTAL paid experience was around $69.00 BEFORE any discounts and/or tip). And, they accepted my credit card of choice... AMEX! 4.0 STARS

The flavor was ok, but nothing to write home about. And the shrimp were very small - what my husband and I call "bait" shrimp. Not the large shrimp you usually get at a nice restaurant. Since i was still hungry, I ordered a cobbler. It was fine, but not great. Texture was a bit strange - not traditional. Probably won't come back. The food is just not that interesting.
