Grew up in the area, and when I was a kid, we went to the Barkley that previously existed here for many family dinners. I never actually went to Magpie's, maybe once, but that was over a decade ago. I was with friends and finally decided, "You know what, let's give it a shot for Friday early dinner." Everything was really solid. They had a nice bar in the back. Service was quick and good-sized menu, lots of different options. I went for the schnitzel, and I got to say it wasn't bad for a schnitzel in America. I was fairly happy with it. My only real criticism was that the potato salad is pretty bland; there's like no seasoning in it at all, so definitely they could improve that. My wife had the avocado bacon cheese burger, and she loved it. I personally thought her fries were maybe a little too crunchy or a little too overdone or stale, but all in all everything was very solid, and I would come back for a casual dinner. read more

Long-time customer, but this visit was a major disappointment. Our steak fajitas was runny, smelled like school cafeteria food, and tasted off -- we couldn't finish them. My chicken enchiladas, which I've enjoyed here before, were completely flavorless. My husband's hard shell tacos were just okay. The only decent dish was my son's fish and chips. If it wasn't for the fajitas I probably would'nt have written this review. I called to complain and they offered a partial refund or a free meal next time. I appreciate the response, but I believe they should refund the fajitas -- I'm willing to bring the food back. Offering a free meal to lure back an unhappy customer doesn't really address the issue. Quality has clearly dropped. We won't be returning. read more

Wow- this restaurant must be on its last legs. At least the staff seemed to be. We came in on a Saturday morning to eat. No one greeted us. There were a few people sitting drinking coffee. Finally we made ourselves to a table and a server walked by and told us to sit down. No menus were offered. We sat there for about 6-8 minutes and realized we made a huge mistake. Came at 7 pm and had still quite a few people yet lots of tables and booths available. There is a huge selection of foods. Mexican, Italian, steaks, pork, beef, chicken, salads and more. Lots of beverages and also a bar in back with the football game on. Andy was our exceptionally nice waiter. Food came quickly and met another sweet waitress. Left full and with leftovers. Also good choices of beverages likr I got hot chocolate and mom got cherry lemonade. A warm ans inviting atmosphere with older music and so I loved it. The decor was also so cute and eclectic. First time in Magpies and I love it! The food menu is simple but the price is fair for decent savory food. We ordered the patty melt and steak! We enjoyed both! It is really the combination of the vegetables, cream cheese, and meat! Best patty melt I have tasted so far. The cut of the steak is pretty big and is good for the price! Customer service is great! The place may give an old vibe but it is clean as well as the restroom! I do recommend this place if you are looking for a simple dinner, leaving the place with your stomach full and satisfied. read more

The wife and I stopped in for an anniversary lunch, and we were pleasantly surprised... the decor may be a bit dated, and the clientele may be older, but this place has some pretty decent grub! My wife had the craving for an Arnold Palmer after walking around the unseasonably warm Descanso Gardens this morning, and that was probably the one disappointment of the meal... both the tea and the lemonade were weak, and the combo suffered for it. Not the best Arnold Palmer ever. I had a draft Stella Artois and it was very nice, cold, crisp, and just perfect to cool off. After perusing the menu we both decided on the Chicken Pita; grilled chicken, tzatziki, red onion, cucumber, and tomato in half a pita served with a Greek Salad. I highly recommend substituting their balsamic dressing for whatever comes with the salad (it was like a tangy ranch?)... with the balsamic it was perfection... just delicious, fresh, and a lovely way to cap off a morning walking around the gardens. Dear Hubby, Sweet Granddaughter, and I were in La Canada Flintridge for another visit to Descanso Gardens. We wanted something simple for dinner. Last time we went to Panera Bread, which was a let-down from previous visits, so we decided to try something new. Yelp reviews lead us to Magpie's Grill. I was expecting something a little more modern. What we found was an old school neighborhood kind of place. Because there was a football game on, DH wanted to sit in the bar area where various TVs were on. The menu was extensive - just about anything "American" or American-adjacent was offered. We decided to split an order of calamari, and a hot pastrami sandwich. DH thought that wouldn't be enough, so he also added a sampler app platter. We ended up taking food home! SG wanted mac & cheese. The kids meal portion was very generous, and even though the 4 year-old tucked in well to her meal, there were still leftovers for another lunch. Kids meals also come with a beverage included. Our server was very helpful and did all the things a good waiter is supposed to do. He promptly asked for our drink order, and offered to answer questions about the menu. Once the food came out of the kitchen he checked back on us to see if everything was okay / did we need anything else? He plied us with extra napkins, and brought to-go containers. He was very present, and we appreciated that. Foodwise, the calamari was prepared very well. It became filling, and when the other items arrived we abandoned it and brought the rest home. The pastrami sandwich was very good. I didn't realize that they normally crown the meat with cheese, so I had to peal off the layer and give it to DH, as I am off milk products. Still, the rest of the bread, pastrami, lettuce, tomatoes, and mayo made for a great tasting sandwich. The only down side was that the fries were a little undercooked. We would consider returning when in the area again. I could see this as a comfort food kind of staple for locals. read more

This place has been my go to for almost 5 years now. Everything on their menu is great, and comes out fast. Different salsas and various dipping sauces really add to any dish you choose. Totally solid diner/family restaurant. I was looking for something close to Descanso and came upon this little gem. I love the nostalgic vibe and solid food choices. I read everyone post about the Private Club and decided that was what I was going to eat. I loved my club and would definitely order it again. After being invited by the owner few months ago I decided to finally check this place out. The barman, if I remember correctly (Jose), was very good and accommodating, like a lifetime next door neighbor. Portions were adequate. It was under salted so I could season it to my liking, it's great for anyone watching their sodium intake . Was not crowded. The bar had 2 TVs showing 2 different sports simultaneously. This place has something for everyone. It's run by LatinoAmericans and has small town Midwest feel to it. Service 5 stars (down to earth, unpretentious) Food. 4 stars (very good) Ambiance 4 stars (Older place, Rustic) Parking 5 stars (Ample) Price 4 stars (nothing is cheap, but given inflation I understand) Crowd 4 stars (Boomers & Gen X) I had the: Southwest tequila lime shrimp fettuccini. It could have been better with some fresh crushed garlic (for flavor) and some chopped green like cilantro parsley dill or something like that (for aesthetics). Not sure if it was tuna, smelled like cat food or pelcher fish, sometimes used in place of tuna. For sure it was not albacore, very brown color. Magpie's Grill provides a comfortable diner for patrons, with a relaxing and laid back environment to grab something to eat. The staff is friendly, the bartenders pour strong drinks (which is great), and the food is pretty good overall. Like others have mentioned, food here is not top-notch (both in presentation and flavors), but the ambiance does help make up for it. Parking is easy, as they have their own little lot you can pull into. Plus, Magpie's is never too crowded, so you can pop in to eat and generally have no problem getting a table. read more

I worked at this location when it was another restaurant and I have been curious to try Magpies for a long time. Finally the day arrived. Staff was friendly and efficient, although server never refilled our drinks. Where this review drops is when discussing the food. Portion sizes were acceptable but preparation and flavors were mediocre. We started with the sampler platter of onion rings, breaded mushrooms, and potato skins. The mushrooms were our favorite item of our entire meal. Skins were decent, don't even bother with the "regular" (skinny) onion rings Next, 3 entrées: 1. Tequila lime shrimp fettuccine - sauce consistency was decent, shrimp not overcooked but evrything was BLAND and the cuts of peppers & onions were very unappetizing and added nothing to the dish 2. Asada wet burrito - good size, but again the peppers and onions were not cut properly and the rice was either undercooked or old 3. A friend told us to try Magpie's Grill and I'm glad we went! We enjoyed our meal at Magpie's Grill. The large selection of fried appetizers gave me eater's block and I just couldn't decide, so, thankfully they had a pick 3. The zucchini strips, large onion rings and mozzarella sticks were dipped in a light flaky batter and so delicious. The chicken wings only come with one type of sweet and spicy sauce which is really good but, I'm a fan favorite of spicy so, of course, I had to have some hot sauce on the side. The wings were really large sized which I don't see too often. :) My daughter had chili without cheese, which they add fresh cut onions and garlic bread was piping hot which she told me was very good and the best of all was that every single staff member was a delight, from the hostess to the cook. I know when we're back in Glendale/La Cañada area we'll stop by again. It was a great little place. read more

Big portions on the pancakes. Bacon is crisp but feels like it's been sitting in a bin for a while. Sausages are big and meaty, well above average. + Good menu variety and some interesting items I haven't seen anywhere else. The "Private Club" sandwich is interesting with turkey, cranberry, cream cheese and cole slaw; recommend this one with the multigrain bread. Fries are crisp, fresh and tasty. + Lots of easy parking in their private lot. Cons: - Prices have gone up around 50% since the menus posted on Yelp on some items. The $9.95 Big Breakfast is now $15. - Service is inconsistent, servers mill around and talk to each other but don't check on the tables nearly as often as I would like. read more

Terrible experience here with a waiter who was incompetent, rude, and refused to bus our table after we ate! We had an agreement to hold our monthly board meeting in their back room where we also ordered food. After a year of this arrangement, this waiter apparently didn't want to work late so he did everything he could to make our dinner unpleasant including: not taking drink orders, screwing up one of our board member's dinners and not offering to take it off the bill, and then not removing our dirty plates. I had to ask him to bus our table after 1/2 hour of looking at dirty dishes cluttering up our table. When I did, he grudgingly removed two dishes and left the rest and didn't return. On my way out, I mentioned that I was very unhappy with our service. He told me if I didn't like it to go someplace else and then said, "This is not an office," which I assume meant that he didn't want us holding our meetings there. After a year of promoting this restaurant and spending several hundred dollars per meeting (including a very good tip for this waiter), we won't be returning here. Any management that lets a waiter talk to its guests like that is not running a very customer friendly business. read more

I really enjoyed my BLTA magpies grill. This place is a real gem. It reminds you of an old-school diner with the dark wood, almost like a boat galley or one of those old seafood restaurants that you would go to buy the beach. It has a family owned vibe that reminds me of some of the places likes to go to in the 80s. I think some of the Decour is straight from the 80s. The sandwich was pretty good I was a little hesitant about the bread. But it had just the right amount of bacon, lettuce, tomato, and avocado. I really like the way that they toasted it enough to give it texture but not too much that it cuts up the roof of your mouth. The fries were decent but nothing to write home about. The best part about it was the pickle spear. It tasted homemade and had the perfect amount of sweet, tired, and crunch crisp. I heard not to come here on Sunday mornings because the wait is pretty long and probably not worth it. But if you do it find it hard to see that the service isn't amazing.
