I'm a regular customer, I spend a lot of money there, I go at least 3 times a week minimum & I picked up my regular ribs & rice & the ribs were burnt really badly, if I didn't live so far away I would've driven back with them but instead I couldn't eat them & had to take a loss & throw them away. However what I'm really upset about is that the next time I went in & told them, I wasn't given a credit or anything, instead the worker said they needed to let the owner know, it's been a week & nothing has been mentioned, check your food before you leave & make sure it's not burned. We ordered four trays of meat, rice and fries for a dinner tonight. This wasn't our first time ordering so we expected good things. Well, this go round was a major disappointment. They've increased the amount of rice and fries in each tray and noticeably decreased the amount of meat. While it wasn't as upsetting with the ribs, the skimpy amount of grilled chicken included (also dry & overcooked) was downright insulting given what we paid. The top sirloin here is the best item on the menu, it is always cooked as asked for and the full size comes with 5 pieces and 2 large sides. The price is on point and it is ready within 15 minutes. The coleslaw, vegetables and the French fries are amazing, I consider the coleslaw to be the best side order here, I normally don't like coleslaw but the Pits is so good. The title of this place is fitting. The Pit IS the pits. Overall tasteless food. Trying to get the ribs off the bones is like pulling teeth. And they give you no sauce. The salad is just sad and the fries are clearly frozen. How difficult would it be to do homemade fries? At minimum, they could add some salt to them to try and give them SOME flavor. I really wanted to give this place more stars. I truly did. But at the end of the day as Yelp would say "Meh. I've experienced better." I was truly let down by this BBQ place considering all the amazing reviews it has garnered. It is true that the menu is super affordable. In fact for $15 you can order a whole platter of beef ribs and chicken combo that comes with two sides. What a great deal indeed. But having a great deal is no reason enough to gain more stars in my book. Because first and foremost I always judge the food when it comes to restaurants. Unfortunately for my first visit to The Pit they truly fell deep in a hole that they could not come out of. The food was not terrible. It wasn't spectacular either. If someone told me that they're selling Portuguese BBQ, they better do it darn well. And by well I don't mean the meat they serve. The beef ribs I ordered were beyond tough. The texture of the meat was rubbery and hard to chew, which is a pet-peeve of mine. BBQ places should properly cook meat to make it tender and juicy. The chicken was the better of the two meats. It had a nice flavor and was perfectly cooked. However it didn't blow me away as it should have. For dessert I chose flan. It (almost) made up for my disappointing beef ribs. I came to The Pit Barbeque hoping to have a great meal with all the Portuguese barbecue flavor, however I came very disappointed. Recently moved to the area, and this place is literally down the street. One of the first nights at our new place, we decided to pick up a tray of chicken and ribs. I originally come from a heavily Portuguese populated town, so I've had my share of Portuguese bbq. This place, definitely did not disappoint! Their prices are fair, their service is extremely friendly and their bbq is delicious ( i do wish they would add some giardiniera to the combos but that's just me being picky). I've eaten from here on 3 separate occasions, each time being delivery. When I receive my food it's ALWAYS hot! This is by far the best bbq I've had. Whenever I'm in the mood for bbq I always think of The Pit first. I'm not a huge fan of pork ribs but the way The Pit makes them is different than any other bbq spot I've eaten at. Their pork ribs are DELICIOUS! I normally get the pork ribs and chicken combo, which I highly recommend. And I also recommend their black beans. Their bbq sauce that they send on the side is a hit too! All in all, great bbq, I recommended this place to all my friends and family. HUGE portions and very affordable. Place is a bit tiny, so expect to squeeze in while you order. Fast service - place your order, and boom, 8 minutes later, you got some damn good BBQ. I don't think some of the other reviewers understand what Portuguese BBQ is. Correction: It's not BBQ, its churrascaria. It's not a big juicy BBQ. It's cooked over very high heat on a wood burning rotisserie. I've been having Portuguese BBQ my whole life, and the Pit gets top marks for being one of the best. Don't expect BBQ sauce, or supermarket rotisserie chicken. It's good, grilled chicken and ribs with rice and fries for around $5 per huge serving. I should caveat this review by stating that we ordered for delivery, and even great food at most places fall flat when ordered for delivery. ------------------------------------------------ You know - I really REALLY wanted to love this place. I had very high expectations given that: 1) the reviews on Yelp were very positive. 2) they had their own website. 3) the person who took our order was very professional and even warned us that the coupon* we planned to use had to be non-expired. And the place sounded very busy in the background 4) the delivery was pretty fast 5) the delivery guy not only had his own credit card swiping machine but had proudly mentioned that this place had won the BEST Essex BBQ award. However, the food was very much a disappointment. - The pork ribs were very dry and hard on the outside - when you HAVE to cut it with a knife, it's no longer BBQ. - The beef ribs were not the ribs we expected, but were actually beef short ribs (a bone every inch). These weren't so bad, but they weren't cooked enough to render the fat correctly. - None of the BBQ meat had ANY sauce. Each order comes with 2 sides, so we tried one of everything. - The fries were edible, but not crispy bc they had been packed into the same tin foil as the ribs and rice. - The yellow rice was undercooked. - The beans were very flavorless (a dash of salt would have gone a long way here). - The salad was actually ok, with fresh lettuce and a creamy Italian dressing. Overall - while it's possible that the food is actually excellent when eating in at this restaurant, we will not be ordering from them for delivery in the future. My hubby and I didn't have more than a few bites, and tossed the considerable amount of remaining food away w/o even considering whether to pack it. ------------------------ * We got a coupon in the mail for $5 off an order of $20 or more.
