They have burgers, Spanish dishes and other things like frog legs and gator bites. It is an interesting place. I brought my dad here for the first time here wanted to try gator bites. We flew to MIA and then rented a car to drive across the state to Naples. We wanted to eat before we hit the long stretch of Alligator Alley, so I googled "restaurants near me." I'm so glad we found The Pit when we did! Sonia was an attentive, charming server and gave us excellent service: when I mentioned that I'm vegetarian she got the kitchen to bend the rules and make me a veggie burger - which is only on the lunch menu. I had a really disappointing experience at The Pitt BBQ. From start to finish, the service felt rushed and inattentive. As soon as we finished eating and paid, it was like they couldn't wait to get us out the door. There was no sense of hospitality--just a clear push to turn the table over as quickly as possible, which made the whole experience uncomfortable. On top of that, the service throughout the meal was poor. We had to wait longer than expected for basic things, and it never felt like the staff was particularly interested in making sure we were taken care of. Unfortunately, the food didn't make up for it either. For a place that's supposed to specialize in BBQ, everything was pretty underwhelming. I have mixed thoughts on The Pit. The ribs are usually very tasty. My hubby and father in law prefer the spare ribs, but I prefer the baby back ribs. Last time we dined here, my baby backs came out much thicker than is typical (see photo) but were yummy. The sides are a mixed bag. The maduro plantains are good, but the beans are way too sweet. Moro rice is good. I think my biggest dislike is that they don't offer glasses of regular tap water, so all water is bottled water. Like most others, I've visited this location after an Everglades tour on two occasions. Both times the food hit the spot and the service was great. Sadly, I was extremely let down by this dining experience. Everyone had been telling me that it was the place to go for local BBQ so I decided to visit with some family that was in town from California. We ordered to start the fish dip which was the tiniest serving size, the crackers served with it were stale (so embarrassing). The rest of the food we ordered was lackluster, I just feel like they've given up on updating the menu items and enhancing the ingredients. Nothing really tasted "fresh" or enticing. Being a restaurant, owner myself and former barbecue chef these folks did a great job.. the owner was actually waiting tables the day we went in it was a weekday after lunch so the place was slow. I don't understand how this place could possibly have less than a 4.5 star rating. I want to preface this review by saying that I'm cuban (and proud). That being said, I was disappointed to walk into a BBQ hut in the middle of the Everglades that was blasting Latin music with disco lights flashing at 3 in the afternoon. I loved all the songs but after getting away from Miami for the day and getting off an airboat ride I was ready for beer, gator bites and country music or something that would go more with BBQ. This is the restaurants prerogative, though, so it's not for me to complain about. We walked in and were told to sit anywhere we'd like and when we got to a table were told "not that one, or any on the ones on the out skirts". OK? So not just ANY table; for that just seat us then. After sitting down and ordering some beers I noticed a tiny note on a napkin box at the bar that said "no cards, cash only". I wish we would've known this beforehand as we never carry cash. They conveniently have an atm inside that charges $4 per transaction. Shady that they didn't tell us about the restaurant being "cash only" before taking our orders. At this point we debated going somewhere else but it was late, we were hungry and we weren't about to drive through the Everglades searching for a new spot so we stayed. We ordered gator bites, frituritas de bacalao and fish dip. Everything came out quickly and fresh. The food was good but nothing out of this world. Overall it was meh, nothing bad nothing great. We were cruising down Tamiami Trail West and came across The Pit. I used to go there with my father 50 years ago when it was one small building. I've been away from Miami for 40 years and had to stop here. Wasn't disappointed. We sat outside under the thatched roof and Cuban music was playing so have a great vibe. The waitress came into the parking lot when we exited our car and beckoned us to come in. They were so friendly. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich with fries and coke slaw. My buddy ordered the chopped beef sandwich and fries and beans. They were great and they were on a toasted brioche bun which have it a good texture. Apparently open 7 days a week and located diagonally across from the Miccosukee Casino on Calle 8 (SW 8th Street), the food is on point served in large portions and grilled over wood chips. Visited this place with a group of friends after our Everglades tour. That day we had a light breakfast so needless to say after the tour we were ravenous and picked the first spot we saw before hitting the highway. At first, I had high hopes because the outside screamed flavor town. When you park and step out of the car you're instantly smacked across the face with a wonderful BBQ smell. You can just smell the BBQ in the air and it ever so gently whispers "come here". I remember telling my friends "oh boy we're in for a treat!"..... Once we got inside we were seated by the window (the tiki area was closed), next to a speaker playing music that will make anyone want to fall asleep so I busted out my speaker and started to play music. The owner didn't seem to mind and neither did the staff members since the other guest were about ready to leave. I got the BBQ alligator with tostones (fried plantain), salad, and black beans on the side. The smell and look of the gator were enticing and begged for a bite. The outer part did have a great smoky flavor but the alligator was severely underseasoned. I tried my friend's traditional ribs and it was the same thing. The outside was lathered in BBQ sauce but there was no real flavor once you got passed the sauce. There was a bit of a chew and not as tender. The black beans were pretty much swimming in flavorless black water - severely underseasoned. The fried plantains were also on the dry side of life and could have used a bit of salt once they were out of the fryer. The dessert tasted and looked like it was factory-made. The flavors were decent but two or more spoons will send you into a diabetic coma. The restroom was located on the outside which reminded me of my local gas station-style toilet. It was a bit unclean and the soap was also watered down. I ended up eating everything on my plate because - well... when you're extremely hungry anything is edible. Overall this place deserves a 3 but I'll give it a 4 because of the great customer service me and my group received. The servers were very attentive and accommodating to our needs.
