Cutty Sark's curry with chicken, rice, and chips
    Jeremy S.

My family and I decided to visit for the first time for British cuisine. It's not a far departure from foods of other cultures around the locality, but you'll notice differences between British and American English, for example. Many of their dishes include chips, which during my visit, resembled steak fries due to their thickness. You'll also see that curry is a signature dish in the menu, which reflects how Anglo-Indian cuisine has maintained popular influence in the United Kingdom. I ordered Cutty Sark's curry with chicken, rice, and chips at medium spice. The name is derived from a British merchant vessel that operated during the late 1800s. The curry had a mix of savory and sweet flavors, which reminded me of both Japanese and Indian cuisines at the same time. I couldn't say with certainty that the curry fit into just one cuisine. Packed with some heat and bold in spice, it's a delightful and large dish if you desire a lot of flavor. Where the curry went a little off course was the addition of celery. The petiole is strongly flavored and distracts from the curry in my perhaps controversial opinion. Curry seems to better mix with potatoes and carrots. I tried some of the bacon sarnie as well. The word "sarnie" is an affectionate diminutive for "sandwich." American bacon usually comes from pork belly, which provides a flavorful yet oily crispiness. However, the British variant usually comes from the loin, which is meatier and leaner. I thought of the bacon here as similar to a savory ham. The sarnie bread is fried in fat to emphasize buttery flavor. The restaurant, filled with English decorations, has the style of a cozy and dim pub. There's a good amount of small wooden booths with cracked leather seating. Our server was really nice and made sure we got everything we needed despite the busyness of the restaurant. For example, my curry came with a chutney, and I had asked for a lid to take it home. While I forgot to take the chutney home, she went outside as she noticed that we took the back exit to look at their double-decker bus. She even offered to take a picture of us. The service deserves a lot of kudos, and we were grateful for her consideration.

My girlfriend and I decided to reward ourselves with a lunch date here after tackling the nearby trail behind Ralphs. After burning a few calories, we were more than ready to put them all right back. Upon entering, we stood at the front for about a minute before being acknowledged and shown to a booth. Not exactly a dramatic wait, but just enough time for me to start wondering whether we'd accidentally wandered into a museum exhibit instead of a restaurant. And honestly, that wouldn't have been the worst thing. The décor here is fantastic. While waiting, I found myself admiring all the details and soaking in the atmosphere. It genuinely felt like we'd stepped into another country without the hassle of passports, customs, or a 10-hour flight. Having never been to a British pub before, I was excited to experience something different. We were seated in a cozy leather booth that looked straight out of a vintage European train car. "Cozy" is definitely the operative word here. If you're dining with someone, prepare for the possibility of an accidental knee-to-knee alliance. It wasn't an issue for us, but taller guests might find themselves wishing for just a few more inches of legroom. For our meals, I went with one of their signature dishes, the fish and chips, while my girlfriend ordered the seafood platter. Looking to start things off properly, we asked our server for an appetizer recommendation. He suggested the chips with curry sauce, which sounded great at the time. What we didn't realize was that our entrées were already arriving with enough fries to sustain a small village. When the food landed, we suddenly found ourselves in possession of what felt like the restaurant's entire potato inventory. The curry sauce itself was tasty, but in hindsight, something like the garlic mushrooms or vegetarian samosas might have given us a little more variety. I ordered the two-piece cod fish and chips, which came with a mountain of steak fries and a tiny scoop of coleslaw that looked like it had wandered onto the plate by mistake. The fish was good, but the portion was impressively hearty. I made it about halfway through before my body politely informed me that further eating would require a nap. The curry sauce was enjoyable, though not quite the life-changing experience I'd secretly hoped for. The real MVP was our server, who remained friendly and attentive throughout the meal despite looking like he was covering half the restaurant by himself. He checked in regularly and did a great job taking care of us. Overall, the atmosphere was the highlight of the visit. Between the immersive décor, cozy pub vibes, and generous portions, it was a fun and memorable experience. Just be warned: if you order fries as an appetizer, make sure you're prepared to commit to a serious relationship with potatoes.

Hate giving this place a negative review, because as a Brit (from Liverpool), want a this pub nearby to stay thriving, however.. as a Brit I have to call it like it is and address something sour that happened this time. (Note: I have been here many times over several years and have never had any issues. The staff has always been polite, friendly and respectful, food and service always good, like outside of this incident I'd rate it 4-stars). I went to enjoy the England vs. Argentina game today, as I had with previous World Cup games, and something was very very wrong. Immediately at entering I was greeted by new aggressive security people (there were many) that told me "if you can't find a seat you will be kicked out". Very unusual as last two times I was there it was literally everyone standing up and cheering everywhere while buying drinks and ordering food; this time it was half empty and quiet, as if the mood was shut down. Some people standing in what I'll assume are "safe" area's, most sitting. The place is small so there's not a lot of seating, and there were no seats visibly available. I told security I was waiting for my wife to enter and wanted to order something and stood by the bar (near the door), they didn't say anything while I stood there so figured I was fine. Within 1 minute from that moment I was grabbed (GRABBED) by the arm and was told I had to leave and couldn't come back . I went to the back patio with my wife because she arrived the moment I got kicked out - same thing back there. There was a woman security person eyeing everyone and telling them to go to Roscoe's instead, I asked her why she was telling people that when the place wasn't even that busy (compared to last time) and she said oh this is a day job but I actually work for Roscoe's; This sudden presence of intense security was so confronting and obviously making patrons uncomfortable, the place was quiet and many people were leaving. Incredible job Ye old ship management, there's nothing like changing the atmosphere for the worst and pissing off your customers simultaneously. You're a British Pub for crying out loud! No idea how things are going now as I'm elsewhere (not Roscoe's). Avoid this place (at least today), chances are you won't be staying anyway. *Management, want me to change this review? I'd be happy to.. reach out to me - I'd love an apology for this nonsense today and to know that you're going to do better next time. **as a few people mentioned this sounds like fire code issues and they probably got in trouble.. understandable, I get it, but still not ok to treat customers poorly. If security is going to be that interactive with customers you need to hire individuals with better communications and people skills. ***photos added are from previous times attending (before security) and as mentioned, there was never any issues at the old ship before and the staff was always polite and friendly. Take this post for what it is, my observation and experience as a patron - don't be a wanker.

I had a good experience at The Olde Ship (Fullerton). I ordered the Clam Chowder Bowl ($12) and Fish and Chips ($28 - One Piece of Haddock). The food is clean, fresh, and filling. I arrived at The Olde Ship (Fullerton) on Saturday (around 1:43PM). Parking is not the most convenient. The primary parking is street parking; sign says, "2 Hour Parking - 8AM to 4PM - except Sat & Sun." There's also a very small rear lot, but it's difficult to use. Staff is well-rehearsed and professional. Staff (Chris) is also helpful and hardworking. Chris politely answered all our questions. The Clam Chowder Bowl was ready within three minutes and 30 seconds. And all the food arrived in 16 minutes. Decent pace. As mentioned, I ordered the Clam Chowder Bowl ($12) and Fish and Chips ($28 - One Piece of Haddock). Personally, I enjoyed the Clam Chowder much more than the battered fish. The Clam Chowder is very creamy, generously seasoned, and filled with fresh ingredients. The clams are thick and plump; the potatoes, carrots, and celery are so soft that it melts apart in your mouth; and this hearty soup had a smooth, thick consistency. Its accompanying bread softens as it hungrily absorbs this piping hot chowder. YUM! The Fish and Chips ($28 - One Piece of Haddock) is fairly bland. The breaded fish gets mushy very quickly, and some moments tasted like mouthfuls of dough. The Haddock had a clean flavor, and I appreciated its springy thickness. Surprisingly, the chips (aka: fries) stole the show with its golden skin and generous thickness. These big fries had an attractive "CRUNCH!" as I but into them; its primary flavor is fresh potatoes. Regarding ambiance, The Olde Ship (Fullerton) is gorgeous! It's decorated lovingly, and the decor makes the guest feel charmed and comfortable. The location is also very clean and family friendly (ex: There's a stack of high chairs for kids). There's also two gender neutral restrooms. The late 80s music is also catchy. Surprisingly, there's no television screens; however, I did notice an unused projector on the ceiling. Overall, I had a good experience at The Olde Ship (Fullerton). The food is filling and freshly made. I also truly appreciated their Clam Chowder Bowl. If curious, I'd recommend. 4.6 out of 5

Excellent service and great food. I highly recommend it. If you love English history then you should check it out. I loved the decorations and the staff. They were pleasant and kind.

Celebrating Christmas Eve at The Olde Ship has definitely been a family tradition for many years for us! They decorate it up so beautifully and it has the best vibrant and festive atmosphere anywhere! They have fabulous British food and the best clam chowder around daily. They also have a great beer selection and a full bar with a pint or a toddy to delight anyone. If you've never been run, don't walk because aboard the ship you're but a stranger once! If you're really lucky, you'll get the extremely unique service of everyone's favorite bartender, Danny!

I used to go to the one in Santa Ana before the pandemic, they closed... Surprise to found there is one in Fullerton too! The vibe is very similar, menu item too. The Scotty eggs is very good, the batter on fish and chip is just the right amount Our server is pretty attentive, and he used to work in the Santa Ana one !..

It's been 15 years since my one and only visit to The Olde Ship! Definitely an upgrade. Why did I go back? My husband has been wanting to try a Traditional British Breakfast, and they have one. The not so pleasant smell is still there, but after being seated a few minutes, we didn't notice it. I don't know what it is, but it's definitely not an inviting aroma. Hubby ordered what we came for, the Traditional British Breakfast, and added a side of Black Pudding. It's a large platter of food with baked beans, tomatoes, mushrooms, two fried eggs, fried bread, a banger, English bacon, and of course, his side of Black Pudding. The meal was served with a container of really tasty mustard, and our server highly recommended the "brown sauce" instead of ketchup, which is HP Sauce. I have to agree with her, the HP sauce was really good! Kind of like ketchup with worcestershire. I sampled everything on his plate and it was definitely interesting, considering I had never tried many of those items. The veggies/beans were great, and I loved the banger. English bacon sort of reminded us of thinly sliced ham, it was pretty good. The Black Pudding actually had a better flavor than I was expecting, kind of earthy with a warm spice, like allspice. Texturally though, I couldn't handle more than one bite. I didn't try the bread because he said it was just too greasy to really enjoy. I had their Fish & Chips, ordered two pieces of cod. Oh my! One piece would have been plenty, as they are HUGE. I brought the other one home. It was served piping hot, the batter was CRISPY and the fish was super flakey and delicious. The fries were fine, and you get loads of them. Their tartar sauce is really good! Our server, Rusty, was so sweet and friendly, she made us feel very welcome there. We're both glad we tried the British Breakfast, although i'm not sure it's something either of us will be craving in the future. Hopefully it won't be another 15 years before I come back!

    Fish and chips

The food here is ok the scotch eggs were great. But they fish and chips were just ok. You could tell the fries had been sitting out for a while. And the fish was on the bland side. But they are served with a spicy mustard. Which made the meal better. I did really enjoy the atmosphere. And the staff was really friendly. I mostl likely would go back but to try a different menu item

Excellent service, best pint of Guinness for miles. Amazing patio and superb Clam Chowder.

Wife and I on patio in front of large TV for world cup match

Went there for the world cup England Norway match July 11th. Got there at 11 AM when they opened. Got a prime table in front of the large outdoor TV they had set up on the patio. Mind you we got there at 11 AM for a 2 PM game. It was hot. But they set up umbrellas and they had a water station with ice set up outside. Our waiter was very cool. He handled our orders quickly and efficiently. They had a limited menu because of the crowd they were expecting. And the crowd did show up! About 150 people on patio at game start. I had the cheeseburger. Came out hot and well done as I asked. Wife had the fish and chips. Delicious. Drinks were strong and cold. As game continued service did slow down. But thats expected right? Wil def be back to check out the other menu items. Def a English pub experience in Orange County. I lived by the Olde Ship on 17th street in Santa Ana. That one closed down. But I will be making the trip to this one. Cheers!

Curry Sark's veggie curry lunch portion. Half and half rice and crisps plus a side of naan. So so good!
    Julie Y.

Long overdue review. Authentic and quaint British pub nestled in Fullerton. Great selection of beers and excellent food options, particularly Cutty Sark's curry. Make sure you add the naan for proper dipping and scooping up of the lingering curry sauce. The spice level options are nice to tailor to different palates. The medium was still nice and spicy (peppery not chili). We always enjoy a proper pint (plus a few more) and love the outdoor seating. We recently brought our pup with us and the waitstaff doted on him just wonderfully. Their lunch portions are perfect if you're looking to have a few extra pints and not fill up on a whole entree. Jeff took excellent care of us and his hospitality just elevated our experience. Can't wait to try that traditional English breakfast! One of the few spots that offers it on the menu!

Pretty good. Not great, but honestly a better experience than anything. I've always wanted to try this place, being that I always pass by when driving up and down Harbor, and the entire visit was... adequate. I will say, the food was really good. My issues are really the price and service. Had no idea they'd charge us a fee for splitting our plate. Had me and my guest known tho we would've just ate off of one plate. Also, the portions don't really seem to match the price point. It all seems a bit much for the amount of food we got. I have no complaints about the taste of the food itself. It's all really good. The sticky toffee pudding is probably the best desert I've had in a while. I just wish there was more of it. Overall, okay.

Sunday rack of lamb special with red potatoes, Brussels sprout, mashed taters, grave and peas and carrots. WOW!

The Olde Ship Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - The Olde Ship

Is there space for a party of 12-14 people?

I believe there is room. They had a long rectangular table set up for a family event the night we were there. I do not think there is room in the bar area but in the dining room (rt adjacent) was this table. You have to realize this is not a large…

    Is it only 21+?

    No, kids are definitely allowed!

Is there still a happy hour?

Yes and lunch specials and extra seating in the back of the restaurant with benches

    Do they have fried Haddock?

They do. One of the few fish & chips restaurants around that actually offer a choice of cod or haddock. Fried haddock serving is a big piece of fish.

Will you be showing the Champions league Final between Manchester city vs Inter?

    Call them.

Is there any type of available parking?

Not really. There is an alleyway in the back but you can guess how that goes. I typically find parking in the neighboring street and walk through the alley. Not too bad of a walk!

Live music on Fridays and Saturdays here too?

Are you open at 7am for the World Cup games?

They have been opening early beat to call and confirm

My buddy and I are meeting there for lunch tomorrow at 11:30. Is there a waiting line? Should I make reservations?

Not that I'm aware. But check the website as the hours may have changed Or try to call them

Do they still serve prime rib dinner?

Yes, and for lunch and dinner

Are they open for dine in or takeout?

    Yes both

Are you featuring live music in the patio area?

They have live music Saturdays, but I don't know if it's indoor or outdoor. Sorry.

Still open? Called multiple times at 5pm on Saturday and no answer.

I passed by last Thursday and all was closed. Maybe they will reopen but not certain.

Are you guy's currently offering takeout?

They are open and offering take out and dine in.

Are they open as of right now due to COVID?

They are open now for take out and dine in.

    Are there vegan options?

    Yes they sure do !

Is this place ok for kids?

It's main feature is the bar, there's also a small dining room. Mostly adults, but it's fine for kids too.

Is the Guinness on tap? Edit...…

Yes it is, we have 26 beers on Tap in Santa Ana Ana 18 in Fullerton

    Does Olde Ship serves haggis?

No, but they do do a pretty decent beef and kidney pie!

But now I don't live near fullerton so I thought I would check it out the next time I was close by. I finally got around to it on a weekend afternoon and immediately I loved the vibe. They do a great job placing you in a comfortable spot with the nostalgic furniture, the sports memorabilia, the local news article clippings. The bartender met me w a greeting as I walked in and quickly I found out he would be the host, waiter, bartender, and busser. I never had an empty glass of beer because he never allowed me to have one, the food came out piping hot, and it was easy to pay the check right away and all done by the same guy! So besides the nice vibe and great service they had some very good bbq and side dishes. The chicken and the pork ribs were solid choices. Both moist and tender and glazed with a really nice bbq sauce. I will definitely be here again when I am in the area again.

Brian's is a good friendly neighborhood sports bar. They have specials most days of the week. I've…read moreeaten twice her very recently, so it's time for an update. The first time, I came for the Monday night burger and beer special for $10.95 after 4pm. The burger was very good with a nice sized patty, cheese, lettuce, tomato, and pickles on a wheat bun. The beer pour isn't just a glass, it's larger-sized schooner. Specialty beers on tap are an extra $2. The burger doesn't come with a side, but a tasty burger and a large beer for under $11 is a great deal. The following week, I came back for the Tuesday night BBQ special. Their BBQ chicken and ribs dinners are 30% off, and come with two sides and a fresh dinner roll. I got the full slab of ribs which was only $21 after discount. They definitely do not skimp on the ribs, as the plate came with two large half slabs stacked on top of each other. The ribs were cooked well, and the BBQ sauce had a good mix of tang and sweetness. I had coleslaw and fries for my sides. The other options for sides are Beckett's beans, potato salad, macaroni salad, and pasta salad. A half slab and the fries filled me up, and I took the other half and the coleslaw home. This is also a great deal for only $21. Other special days include Wednesday $3.50 schooner night from 5pm to 7pm, Friday night $10.95 fish taco plate, and Saturday and Sunday breakfast specials from 10am to noon. They have a pool table, darts, and many TVs with various sports playing. Service was timely and friendly.

I waited hours before being seated even after we requested to be seated after when people left. Then when we finally sat down and ordered it took very look time at this piont the crowd was gone and it was business as usual. I decided to give it another try with another friend of mine couple weeks later. IT was during the week and not busy still the same. Service is not great here. I heard this place was suppose to be great and saw good reviews. Maybe 3rd time the charm. I really love and want to support the locals but have to say a bit disappointment. Not sure If another visit is worth it. Best to have an honest reviews regardless of personal feelings. To give credit food is decent bar type food and drinks fair priced. It is like a k-bar type atmosphere. Maybe my timing was bad. The service is not great. I suppose the food is decent enough. Try it out for yourself if you still want.

Located in a newer shopping center, this restaurant is already drawing quite the crowd. As of now,…read moreparking is free, which is a huge plus. They offer valet parking at the entrance, along with additional parking around the corner. Since this place gets very busy, I'd recommend arriving early to avoid a long wait. This is a great spot for large groups and celebrations. The menu is designed for family-style dining, so you can order several dishes to share with everyone at the table, or you can order an individual entrée if that's more your style. Despite the packed dining room, the service was quick and attentive. Our food came out surprisingly fast, and the staff kept everything running smoothly throughout our meal. The food was delicious, full of flavor, and beautifully presented. Combined with the lively atmosphere and efficient service, it's easy to see why this restaurant has become such a popular destination. I'll definitely be back to explore more of the menu. Army stew was my favorite

And their hands go inside everything. They grab the rinsed pitcher, scoop the tea water and serve it. Also mind you, the tea water is inside those huge trash cans. AND when they were transferring the ice (from again those trash bins) they would lift it to pour all the ice in to the tea water bin and you can see all the dirty drippings from the outside wheels drip inside the container.. @.@ No its not a one time thing with one employee...they all knew the drill and did it like routine. Me and my friends watched the whole thing while we were just trying to enjoy some drinks at the bar. It was so disgusting, my friends wanted to pay and leave quickly but NO theres no way im paying for the drink i only had a couple sips of and couldn't finish. So i told the manager, didnt pay and left. He was not shocked ... wonder why. And now im just telling all my close friends not to go here... digusting.

The moment we looked at the menu, it instantly reminded us of Seoul--we had just been there a week ago! One of the dishes we ordered was the stir-fried chicken gizzard, which was something we absolutely loved while in Korea. I'm happy to say it did not disappoint. The flavor was very authentic and brought back memories of our recent trip. We ordered a few other dishes as well, but the chicken gizzard was definitely the highlight of the meal. To top it all off, we were seated on the patio and ended up having a great view of the 4th of July fireworks. Good food, authentic flavors, and a nice holiday atmosphere made for a surprisingly memorable dinner.

The chicken was also really good, and the spring rolls were a great addition. The drinks were definitely an experience! Super cute presentation and something fun and different to try! One thing we did notice was that the food seemed to have quite a bit of MSG or seasoning we felt very full and sleepy afterward so just something to keep in mind if you're sensitive to it. Aside from that, everything tasted great, the presentation was fun, and we'd definitely come back!
