    Lamb Haggis Soup (Large)
    Jo-Anne L.

Well it's pretty legit, judging by the lack of cleanliness, poor service, and picture menus on the walls (with ZERO English). These are all signs of a Chinese restaurant with excellent food, and the Old House delivered on that front. We had their specialty water boiled fish and the lamb haggis soup, both of which were delicious, came in large bowls, and reminded me of true traditional Asian food. The fish came with a copious amount of spices and was very aromatic; the lamb broth had that richness which I really enjoyed. On the down side, the dishes arrived very slowly. As mentioned there's pretty much no service whatsoever, but you order by marking on a sheet so there's no chance of them bringing out the wrong thing (and you never need to talk to the waitress! Lol). Of course ambience and all that is also non-existent - I was grateful enough for the moderate A/C.

    Beijing style lamb pancakes

OG style Asian restaurant oozes old school cool and old fashioned dishes. After all, it's the... Old House. They do have an English menu now, but their specials are mostly in Chinese. I've come here to grab takeout and dine in once each. Both times the order was slow to come but the food was mostly on point. DISH BY DISH... Shredded potato with chili oil: Simple and delicious, but very heavy and oily. Chef Recommended Menu Hot Plate Lamb I'm addicted to lamb. This wasn't super gamey (which I normally prefer) but it still was quite flavourful and savoury. I probably wouldn't get it again but I'm glad I tried it. Fried Pork Tenderloin A bit salty and disappointingly NOT that crunchy. However, it was almost an "acquired" taste because, despite the lack of crunch, I kept eating it... Kung Pao Shrimp Lots of heat. Lots of peppers both spicy and non spicy. Not the biggest fan of peppers so this was only okay. Shredded Pancake with Veggie The surprise dish! It did not look like what we expected. It LOOKS more like a noodle... I guess it's almost like an Asian kothu roti except it's a kothu pancake. But this was a winner to me! Beijing Style Lamb pancakes This was a little thin, plus a little light on the lamb. But my goodness do I like myself a good crisp on a pastry. Beef Burrito Good choice but a little dry. A bit more sauce would go a long way... But just a bit. Veggies We got this to try to balance things out with greens. It was well made although portion size left a lot to be desired. "Ball vegetable" or boh choi

Stir fry noodles with cabbage and beef

I saw other Yelpers' photos of the beef and green onion wrap and I knew I had to come here to try it for myself since this is one of my all-time favourite Taiwanese dishes. I ordered it along with a lamb and green onion pancake and a stir-fry noodle with napa cabbage and beef strips. Unfortunately, all 3 dishes were just mediocre. The beef wrap was a little dry and could've used more sauce, the lamb pancake was a little too burnt, and the stir-fry was a little more chewy than normal noodles. Overall though, all the ingredients tasted fresh and were generously used. The food tasted fine, everything was served promptly, and the employee was nice. I wouldn't mind coming back in the future but it just isn't at the top of my list of places to go. P.S. The menus are fully in Chinese here without pictures so if you don't know how to read/write Chinese, just show them pictures off Yelp haha, that's what I did. P.P.S. They still honor the 9% off your entire order if you check-in!

If you want to have some authentic home cooking of Szechuan or Northern Chinese, the Old House is the place I would recommend. However, if you are eat spicy food, this is NOT the restaurant for you!! Yes this is the restaurant that will makes your lips numb, you cough like crazy and you have to drink tons of water while the wait staffs smiling at you! This restaurant serves one of the most spicy "water cook" dishes, that water is hot chilli oil with tons of chilli pepper and peppercorns that explore in your mouth! The interior is small, the tables are packed together. At least now they installed a new Air Conditioning and ventilation system. You won't smell like hot chili pepper after you eat here! Service is fast and efficient! And a good chance for you to practice your Mandarian! :) Prices are reasonable, portions are big. I was full eating the Szuechan Cold Noodle ($4.99). It is mixed with cucumber with hot chili sauce and a hint of peanut sauce. Perfect spiciness for me! Cash only! no lunch specials!

This place is definitely a hole in the wall - the restaurant is small, tables are covered in disposable plastic, and some of the chairs had mysterious stains on them. The walls were also covered in photos of some of the top selling menu items, and there is a TV on the side for patrons to watch while gobbling down some steamed dumplings. The owners were very nice, despite us speaking in English to one another (we did speak to them in Mandarin). Menus came in either all Chinese or had Chinese and English on them (we got the all Chinese one but were given the translated version after we've placed our order lol). Food as a whole was good. I really liked their pork pancake - it would make a good to go breakfast. The beef burrito wasn't that great - I thought it lacked slightly in flavour. It was probably the lack of scallions in the burrito. Overall, a not bad place. Friendly staff and good, authentic northern Chinese food.

I got this order on Uber eats, so I can't talk about the restaurant or service and only on food. If you're looking for an authentic Chinese eats, this is definitely the place! Their Vege dumplings are so good, not super chewy on the outside, yet boiled to perfection. The inside filling is a variety of Chinese vegetables, and gives off a flavourful crunchy taste. The package comes with enough that you can share or just eat in a meal. I would definitely get it again. I got the beef and green onion panckaes not knowing what to expect and everything about them was perfect. The outside was soft but crisp to perfect. The filling was delicious, beef mixed with green onion and spice. The meal is big enough to share especially if you order other things in their menu

    Shui Zhu Water Boiled Fish
    Mish S.

Toronto's Most Authentic Shui Zhu 水煮肉片 or "Water Boiled Fish" I've found myself on an eternal quest for hunting down the best ethnic eats that Toronto has to offer. I scour Yelp, and head to pockets of Toronto that I never even knew existed, all in the name of finding hidden secrets of tasty success! While on my quest, I find it rightfully just to share some of those secrets - as a sort of public favor. The secret I'm going to share is said to be the best you can get and it's boiled up in Old House's kitchen. The Old House is an assuming Northern Chinese restaurant residing on the outskirts of Toronto in the food-haven of Scarborough. The Old HouseThe inside of this hideaway may not be easy on the eyes, but with the food that their dishing out, who cares! At first glance you'll find a handful of tables, photos of their offerings adorning the walls, a TV playing a Chinese news station and then there is this sound of a fiery roar coming from the back of the house - a high cooking flame. As I sat there, I began to feel almost as if I were sitting in someone's cozy and warm kitchen for a bite to eat. I came for one thing and it was, Shui zhu otherwise known as, "Water Boiled Fish," a Sichuan specialty that's brimming with scorching chili peppers and tongue-tingling Sichuan peppercorns, but don't run away yet! Shui zhu appears more daring than it lets on and for those brave enough to dip their chopstick into the bubbling bowl of chilies to fish out a delicate piece of buttery soft fish (or beef or pork) will be rewarded. You see, beneath all that spice lies a decadent bite that exudes the perfect amount spicy and tingling hot. I urge you to go find the Old House, order up a bowl of shui zhu and know that you're getting the most authentic that this city has to offer. How It's Prepared -Shui zhu literally means, "water-cooked meat/fish slices" - The dish begins by scorching a handful of small red chili peppers and heaping spoonfuls of Sichuan peppercorns in a wok until nose-tinglingly fragrant -Next, wok some Napa cabbage, stems included and place them in a large serving bowl. -Then comes the shui zhu part- Boil some stock with a copious amount of doubanjiang (a spicy, salty paste made from fermented broad beans, soybeans, salt, rice, and various spices.) and poach the fish or meat just enough to remove the rawness (20-30sec) Add all to the serving bowl with the Napa Cabbage -Add the chili pepper and Sichuan peppercorns - Bring a generous (...like a 1/2 cup or more!) amount of vegetable oil to nearly smoking point then douse it over the awaiting bowl and watch it come to a sizzle, toasting it to impart that Sichuan scorched chili taste. How To Eat Simply dip your chopsticks in and grab hold of a perfectly cooked piece of buttery soft fish (or beef or pork) that will literally melt in your mouth. Also Good To Eat Lamb Kebabs: Grilled to perfection with cumin Stir Fried Pancake with Cabbage: This was delish! The stir fried pancake took on a texture similar to noodles. Cold dish $4
    A Y.

We ordered Pork and Leek Dumplings, Noodle in Chili and Peanut Sauce and a Cold Dish for lunch. I don't remember the exact prices, but I recalled that they were reasonable. Everything seemed authentic and homemade. All the oil, all the flavours. The freshness of everything was average/okay. The dumplings were home styled, so the skin was thicker than "gourmet" restaurant style. The cold dish was just radish in vinegar. In place of restaurant refinement, The Old House is full of country charm and homeliness. It feels like a neighbourhood Northern food eatery down the street. I enjoyed the trip back time, so I would likely visit again if I am in the neighbourhood.

I went here for lunch in a party of 2. i went to this restaurant because the person i went with suggested it, saying it was pretty affordable and good in the past. we went to immediately the place looks a bit run down, which usually means you should expect some affordable food, that is perhaps family style. However this place was instead just plain dirty. I went here and ordered a few dishes, and a desert. and i have to say it is bad on every level. the Dishes had all the wrong flavour, and i wasn't really sure what chinese style they were trying to achieve. the service was typical chinese. However the worst part was that the price itself was chinese middle to higher class restaurant prices. which they haven't justified with their cooking taste and ambience. Nothing here special in terms of food, as it offers same food as any other middle to northern chinese style food. However they just do it worst. i would say the cantonese restaurant that was here before years ago was much better, and this one is clearly not a restaurant i would ever recommend or visit again.

Fried squid and lots of chilis
    Dy M.

This is such a good place for northern Chinese cuisine! It definitely hits all the right places for spice and hotness. I love how they put chilis in everything! We ordered a couple of dishes to try out this place and wow, everyone blew our minds. The fish in spicy oil was practically amazing as the top of the soup were all cut up chilis and you really have to dig to find the fish! Once you taste the fish it was an explosion of spicy and the calming taste of cabbage. As well the fried rice is a must have as it is spicy with vegetables and beans. Oh the best part is fried cartilage!! It was amazing experience and I definitely will be back to try more dishes! There is no better place for this cuisine!

    Kelly W.

Unfortunately, their boiling fish is not as good as before anymore, lost all the aroma and flavour, taste very water downed, not even salty enough. Sadness. Other dishes are still ok tho.

    Jimmy H.

3.5* Authentic family run Northern Chinese restaurant, the decor is poor, service is average, but the food is quit decent. Location is kinda far for me, but I do come here once a while, skewers is always a must for me, although they are deep fried, the meat is tender and well spiced. Their sour napa with pork belly is always my favorite, only complaint is the portion is too small. The stir fry pan cake is a bit oily but taste pretty good. A few of the dishes here are unique dishes (ie Beijing dessert snack), if u are into northern Chinese food, give this place a try, mela hours prepare to wait, as seats are quit limited.

The posters outside caught my eye, and I decided to come back with a group of three friends to try it out. We came a bit late around 8 PM, and most of the fish were already sold out except the original. We ended up ordering the Signature Spicy Grilled BBQ Fish ($40), a whole fish served bubbling hot with three toppings (potatoes, spam, and lotus root). You can choose between catfish and turbot, we chose the turbot fish. It looked extremely spicy, but the spice level was actually perfect. It was a bit on the oily side, but pairing it with rice balanced it out nicely. The fish was very tender and buttery, everything tasted amazing! We also ordered the Stir-Fried Egg with Tomato. The eggs were soft, the tomato sauce was rich. Not to mention the portion size was huge, we even had leftovers after eating until we were full. The restaurant itself was spacious, clean, and had plenty of seating. I think they were doing some sort of promotion so they gave us a $25 off coupon, though it expired pretty quickly so we didn't get to use it. I'd definitely come back for that grilled fish.

A few of their dishes come out on a sizzling plate with flames underneath. They are still in soft-opening mode with several specials. You can see the menus via a QR code. The Hunan cuisine is listed as "Hunan Noodles" and the Szechuan cuisine is listed as "Chopfire Menu". The Szechuan dishes are listed with 1 to 3 chilies representing the spiciness. If you can't handle spicy, then avoid eating the chili pieces and you might "survive". The restaurant decided to minimize their food offerings so that they can focus on refining their dishes in terms of quality and taste, including from customer feedback. We ordered the following: 1. Signature Spicy Grilled BBQ Fish ($39.95). 2. Home Stir Fried Beef ($21.95). 3. Bullfrog with Baby Ginger ($19.95). 4. Stir-Fried Cauliflower with Preserved Pork ($15.95). 5. Drunk Oolong (charcoal roasted oolong tea base) x 2 ($5.95 x 2). 6. Lemon Taro Balls ($7.95). We also saw the following: 7. Stir-Fried Sliced Pork with Green Pepper Noodle Soup ($9.99). First 10 customers each day, only pays $1.00. 8. Ink Painting Cocktail ($5.95). The Signature Spicy Grilled BBQ Fish came out on a huge sizzling platter. The BBQ Fish, a Turbot Fish, was very fresh and flaky, easily coming off the bone. There is no head attached like at typical Chinese restaurants but it would not have fit in the platter. The platter had a delicious sauce (soupy consistency and not sweet), luncheon meat slices, lotus root slices, and two other vegetables, along with chili pieces. The entire dish tasted great together with the various flavours. The menu listed it as 2-chili spicy but I could handle it by avoiding the chili pieces. The Home Stir Fried Beef is tender. It is listed as 3-chili but I could handle it by avoiding the chili pieces. The Bullfrog with Baby Ginger has the bullfrog cut up in little pieces; no you don't see a whole frog! The meat was actually good but most pieces have bones in it, so it takes time to eat it carefully. There was ginger slices in it but it, but we thought the slices were quite large! The Stir-Fried Cauliflower with Preserved Pork was very delicious! It came in a sizzling plate. The Cauliflower was flavourful and was not crunchy and not too soft. I've never had preserved pork slices before; it was quite good, not as salty as Chinese preserved vegetables. The Drunk Oolong has comes in a small bowl a with gin and ice. On the side, they include pieces of the charcoal roasted oolong tea leaves so you can smell it; quite a good smell indeed. You can also order it without the gin, which is what I ordered for mine (since I don't drink alcohol). It was such a nice drink! The Lemon Taro Balls dessert was pretty. In the centre was a slice of lemon. The customer service was good. There is plenty of indoor table and counter seating, including a small private room at the back. There is also an outdoor patio during warmer weather. There is pop music playing in the background. There is no free WiFi. The restaurant is wheelchair accessible, but there is no door-open button. There are two gender-neutral washrooms downstairs, so they are not wheelchair accessible. There is paid neighbourhood street parking. Review 2025-026

Delicious duck inside. Good vinegar dipping sauce. Good volume Hot & Sour Iberico Pork Shanghainese Soup Dumplings: Fantastic and unique. The dumplings don't really need dipping sauce since inside there is a hot and sour soup along with pork. These are unique and delicious. Fried Wagyu beef taro croquette : pretty good but really tasted like a Jamaican patty Cold noodle with shredded duck : very generous with meat. Honestly a lot more than any other restaurant that serves this. To be fair no one charges this much either so it should. Flavour could be stronger but certainly decent. Fresh Mango, Coconut, Glutinous Rice Roll: nice fresh dessert. Our favourite. Frozen xiao long bao with chocolate and nut: Tastes like a mochi. Not bad. Dragonball Zen - fun name. Delicious drink. Jasmine Dragon Ball Infused Tanqueray Gin / Peach Liquor Lime / Rose Water / Mint / Seltzer Over $200 for this meal before tip. It's premium an debatable if with it. Will be back but just occasionally.
