So good!!! I've walked by here and they always have several people dining so I figured it must be good. I'm very glad I went in. It's family fun and the entire team is so wonderful. We were served quickly and the service was overall great. We tried the crushed cucumbers, ginger beef, basil chicken, and scallion pancake. Everything was really yummy!! I wish the cucumbers had marinated a little bit because the dressing was really good but didn't really saturate the cucumbers. The ginger beef was so fresh and ginger-y. Service was quick and very friendly staff. 1. Boiled pork dumplings - almost all the dumpling skins were broken. I've never seen this before anywhere... all the juice is gone and the skin being so thick, how did it all break? Normally, I prefer thick dumpling skins. These sins were very thick, but the texture was not pleasant. It was quite hard and chewy, instead of qq. Taste wise, the dumplings were also underwhelming. 2. There is a menu available online and a special menu available in store, which I suppose must change from time to time! The additional menu in store offered vegetarian pan fried dumplings on the day that we dropped by, and it was absolutely delicious! The decor is very nice because it's glass all over! We sat right beside where the heater is, so it worked out in the super cold freezing rain day. A surprisingly Taiwanese restaurant located at an unexpected location. The name I love and use; the food is a different thing. Hardly any decor and basically you eat and run. Not a place to hang out. The small open kitchen can be seen and it reminds you of your parents' kitchen. Some seats can be uncomfortable. The washroom is small too. Food: the beef noodle soup was hot in temperature and in spice which I love. The beef looked more like pork to me. They didn't have the sour pickled veggies that go with it. The noodle wasn't chewy enough. Good thing it was a good portion. The "ma pao tofu" was alright. Nothing special about it. We did ask to delete some spice to it. The sad part is that the steam rice came like 2 minutes later and it was an additional cost. The pan fried green onion pancake wasn't what I expected. It was hard instead of chewy. Dry too!! It's not the best Taiwanese restaurant, but I'm glad that they are trying and giving that community a little taste of Taiwan. Verdict: I would go back to try their other dish. Let me first say that I was walking into this restaurant expecting to give this place a 4-star (if not 5-star review). I was skeptical of the reviews that rated this place under 4-stars because of raving reviews from co-workers of mine. The wringly green beans stir-fried into the peppers and mushrooms were fantastic. However, this was a very small plate for it to cost $11. Quality: 4.5/5. Price for the food amount: 3/5. 2. Fried rice- this was their featured fried rice and a recommendation from the co-worker. I'm not a fried rice person to begin with but chose this because of the rec. This was just fried rice I could get at any chinese restaurant in chinatown for probably 75% of this cost. It was a lot but not memorable. Quality: 3.5/5. Price for the food amount: 4/5 3. Boiled pork and chive dumplings- having chosen the healthier version of the dumpling options (versus fried), these turned out to be the most disappointing meal here. The dough/skin of the dumpling was very thick (and this is my greatest fear). The ratio of meat to skin was probably 1:2.5. Quality: 2/5. Price for the food amount: 3/5. You can get the same dumplings but WAYYYYYY better at dumpling house in Chinatown. Thank me later and go there. So in conclusion, if you're looking for the hype of this place that came from BlogTO or other reviewers, this place will not meet your standards. Summary: clean, classy, classic vibe restaurant serves tasty Chinese food! It was pretty quiet on a Thursday at 12:30 pm. I was content seeing the minimalist look and classic blue white dishware - it honestly reminded me of my childhood. The lady at the counter recommended the General Tao chicken but I was on a budget and the chicken didn't come with rice (rice is $2 a bowl)... Plus I had my heart set on getting the green onion pancake as an appetizer, so I went with that plus the braised beef noodles. The green onion pancakes came first and were quite good. Chop chop chop chop! My friends and I arrived here around ~12:30 and were seated right away, with the choice of the patio or inside. We chose the latter under the shade of an umbrella. We ordered the fried vermicelli, deep fried tofu (which came with a chili sauce), sweet and sour pork, pork and chive dumplings, and green onion pancake. The dumplings were super crispy on the outside and just perfect inside, super flavourful and was even more delicious with soy sauce! The fried vermicelli EXCEEDED my expectations as I thought it was going to be the typical bland noodles but wow I really enjoyed it. The deep fried tofu smelled a little funny but we realized it was the garbage truck beside us - THEY DON'T SERVE STINKY TOFU AS MUCH AS I'D LIKE TO TRY IT! Everything was all in all delicious and I would totally return to try their other types of dumplings. I highly recommend that if you come with a group of friends, you order many dishes so everyone can have a little bit of everything. Since I've reviewed this so many times, I figured I'd reiterate my moms first impressions this time. Green onion pancake was impressive. The baby bok choy wasn't up the par, as it was a bit old. The braised beef noodle soup was ok. The soup wasn't strong enough - wasn't Braised long enough. Salt and pepper shrimp was ok. It was an old style way of cooking where the shell is still attached. Chilli fish was very good for its price and the portion was plentiful. Pan fried dumpling's skin was too fragile. It broke upon the touch of the chopstick. Basil chicken wasn't special. Checking another one off my bookmark list, I was super impressed with this Chinese restaurant. Small, but a good amount of seating. More upscale than your typical Chinese restaurant. What I was most impressed by, was the lack of grease in the food! Typically ordering Chinese food tastes so heavy and can be shiny with grease. Not here though. Friendly service. This is the best Chinese/Taiwanese food I've had probably ever. Perfect amount of grease, super fresh, excellent amount of spice. I've been waiting to try this place for a while but for some reason I put it off. I won't be doing that again. I'm so glad I finally ordered this. This is probably one of my favourite Chinese restaurants in the area! It's a cute little place that serves pretty good portions of delicious dishes at an okay price (slightly more expensive but worth it). My go-to dishes are always the Shanghai noodles and the green beans, which are both SO GOOD. Also, the dishes here aren't greasy but still taste amazing! Unfortunately, they don't have A/C so it is slightly hot especially during the scorching summer days, but honestly we were too busy studying our mouths with noodles to complain. This is everything I want in a restaurant serving Taiwanese/ Chinese cuisine! Chop Chop is family-run, modern with well-thought out and minimal decor, and serving the classics. The location lets a lot of natural light in and the space is lofty, which allows for a comfortable location to have a long lunch or dinner. We ordered: Smashed cucumber salad - Cucumber salad is a classic accompaniment to many Chinese dinners and Chop Chop's version had a spin on it but still really reminded me of the salads my mother and grandmother would make. My friend worked in Beijing for a year and was looking forward to trying this dish again. It was crunchy, savoury and did not disappoint. Mapo tofu - Another dish I grew up eating and a favourite of my friend. The tofu was delicious and not extremely spicy to suit a more Western palate. Taiwanese basil fried chicken - It came with fried basil leaves and was my favourite dish of the meal. The chicken was super crunchy and seasoned well with 5-spice flavour. Taiwanese beef noodle soup - This is a favourite of mine but I've definitely had better versions elsewhere. Even though the soup and udon noodles were perfect, the beef wasn't braised enough and the colour of the meat was very light. Besides the food, service was extremely attentive (but not overbearing) even though the restaurant was somewhat busy. I really appreciated the open kitchen and would definitely forgo Chinatown to come here again. read more

It was surprisingly empty on a Saturday afternoon. The servers were very friendly and attentive. I loved that the menu was simple and straightforward, so we weren't overwhelmed by too many choices. We ordered the braised beef noodles ($12 - they've raised the price from previously posted menus). We also got an order of pan fried dumplings to share ($9). We were really happy with everything we ordered. The prices are a little steeper than what you'd find in Chinatown, but their noodle portions were quite large and they gave an ample amount of beef. GREAT PORTIONS | ORDER AGAIN: PANCAKES I came here a few weeks ago with my boyfriend. We both ordered a beef broth noodle, and shared a pancake and some pork dumplings. I was really surprised about the portion size when the food arrived. The noodle portion was quite large; if you are two girls and both generally eat a lot, I really recommend sharing a bowl. The beef was really tender and the broth was clear, light and 'sweet'. The pancake was really well-made and I highly recommend it! It is not too oily or flaky, great texture. I was really full after the noodles but couldn't help eating a lot of the pancake too. The dumplings were good, but not outstanding. That is, as expected of a Chinese restaurant. Legit, these might be the best green beans I've ever had and the portion is a good size for those concerned about $11 vegetables. Admittedly the fried pork dumplings ($9) were a little too soggy, but when I brought the leftovers home and gave them an extra bit of pan frying for crispier edges was quite good. I ordered pork and chive dumplings (kinda bland tbh), string beans (quite tasty), short ribs (a little too tender but flavour was not bad), and the braised beef noodle (nothing special). I got a CRAZY STOMACHACHE afterwards, the worst I've ever had in my 26 years of existence. It was so painful, much worse than cramps. I did try to reach out to the company via social media before writing a review but they did nothing to make things better.. just said they'll let the kitchen know. I am truly disappointed.. spent $60 to spend a night in the washroom. I would not recommend.. read more

Chop Chop embodies everything I love about a family-run restaurant. It's your more upscale version of a Taiwanese eatery with minimalist interior (marble tables, high ceilings, white furniture + walls, hardwood floor) and an outdoor patio. It's the open-kitchen concept with floor to ceiling windows (tons of natural light) that makes this place look much larger than it really is. With the patio outside I'd say this place can sit about 40 customers comfortably. I'm a huge fan of their menu (both the physical paper menu and the actual contents on it) and don't even get me started on the food. We ordered the Crispy Shrimp Wontons for our app, as well as the featured Egg Noodles, Braised Beef Noodle Soup, Fried Vermicelli with Shrimp, Shredded Pork and Egg, and the Shanghai Noodles with Shrimp and Pork for the mains. So delicious! The portions were huge and I'll be happily eating leftovers for the next week. The quality is definitely there and reminded me of the flavourful dishes my parents used to make for me as a child. I do wish that I read all the reviews before coming here though so I would've known to try those pancakes that everyone is raving about. The staff were very attentive and friendly. I found that they did not skimp out on the goodness added to the soup, it was filled with mushrooms and other things that made the soup very hearty. Also tried their veggie spring rolls and fried vermicelli. Portion size for the vermicelli was huge and can easily be split between two people. It tasted spectacular! I enjoyed a solo dinner here recently. The room is is tiny, but I grabbed a window seat. I had three dishes. The pan-fried dumplings were very good; fresh and expertly fried and lots of flavour, albeit very similar to what you can find elsewhere in Chinatown (see Mother's Dumplings and the Dumpling House for example). The green beans were truly outstanding; perfectly cooked and seasoned, and not too greasy. I could eat a plate of those beans for lunch every single day. We went as a group of 7 and they were nice enough to accommodate even without a reservation - Good selection of vegetarian food. - They give white rabbit candy at the end when you pay the bill. - I also saw that they do delivery and it seems quite popular as foodora bikers were coming in and out frequently. Cons: - Compared to the classic Chinese restaurants in Chinatown, the portions are smaller for almost the same price.
