I had a great experience at The Monkey King in Brooklyn. I went a few days ago with a group of friends. We were greeted kindly and seated quickly, (I recommend reservations ). They we're also kind enough to take our coats. And I have to say the food was outstanding. We actually got a few appetizers and two entrées, and we shared it among the group(3ppl). Char Siu and Duck fried rice I highly recommend. The service was exceptional. We were offered chopsticks lol which I made a joke about. And the fact that the gentleman got the joke made it such a great experience. 10/10 read more

Ordered lunch for takeout and was blown away! Duck is my weakness, and the roast duck rice bowl ($16) is an amazing value. Everything is generously portioned; it's enough for two meals for me. Large amounts of juicy and perfectly seasoned duck and veggies, and the chicken fat rice is absolutely the best rice I've ever had. You know it's a great meal when even the rice is packed with flavor. The dumplings are also big and crispy, and the cinnamon soy sauce is so unique. I'm very happy to finally write this review!!! The owners previously hosted a dinner party style "preview" for their restaurant at their own home that I was lucky enough to attend and be able to support them. Once I heard their story, tasted their "preview" dishes, I was sold and followed their journey until opening. I won't spoil the entire story but having two unique backgrounds and upbringings and quitting a corporate career for your passion, is something we can all relate to at some level. I went with 3 other girl friends for a fabulous Thursday night dinner. We decided to do the 8pm reservation which I thought was the perfect timing. Munzzy sat us at one of their fabulous green velvet booths (who doesn't love a GREEN VELVET!!) and we got looking at the menu. They currently are not serving alcohol but the bar is ready to rock once they get their license. The ambiance was very date-night esque but also perfect for a group dinner. We order so many fabulous dishes: eggplant, green beans, char siu pork, scallion pancake, golden egg fried rice, shrimp toasts, chicken dumplings, cumin lamb and the crispy garlic fried chicken! Everything was absolutely delicious but my stand out favorites: shrimp toasts (deep fried shrimp "toasts" with a coconut curry dipping sauce, BOMB), crispy garlic fried chicken (extremely flavorful, skin was extra crispy), chicken dumplings (the spicy cinnamon chili sauce with a moist dumpling mmmm dreaming about it still) and the green beans (perfect bite to them). Try anything on the menu and you will not be disappointed. Whenever Munzzy had a chance to come by, she would explain certain dishes to us, giving her and Harvey's inspiration for the dish and how they did their own spin (she did this at other tables as well!). It was great to have that interaction and hear more about how she and Harvey crafted their dishes. I can't tell you much about the area but it did seem very hip and clearly a popular spot during the day and nighttime. We ordered the vegetable dumplings, prawns, green beans with tofu, and cumin spare ribs - all fantastic. What is lowering the score of my review is that there was a table who had a whole photo-op towards the end of their meal. The flash was constantly going off in the dimly lit restaurant. As they were leaving they continued taking photos with the door to the entrance of the restaurant open, letting the cold air in. It was inconsiderate and host staff did not ask them to shut the door after over 5 minutes of this occurring. I see why people would want to take photos there because of the ambience, but it ruins the experience for those just trying to have a nice dine-in experience. read more

My friend just moved to the area and we were exploring the food options around him and found this place. The food exceeded my expectations. Between my friend and I we shared four dishes and all of them I would recommend again: Fried oyster mushrooms: 5/5 Fried pieces of oyster mushrooms lightly tossed with generously sized scallions. The flavors were fantastic and perfectly spiced for us l Cumin Lamb: 5/5 They drizzle hot honey on it which surprisingly worked well! I was a bit skeptical at first, thinking it wouldn't add much to the flavor since cumin is such a strong flavor but I found myself reaching for the pieces that had the most honey drizzle. Crispy chicken: 5/5 For me, this was the must order dish. The skin on the chicken is perfectly crispy and the garlic crisps were a wonderful touch. I have had this style of chicken at other restaurants but none of them were as moist as the one here. Stopped in with some friends today and had the most amazing lunch. I loved everything about the place from the amazing owners who gave us a tour, the backstory about the restaurant and its character and vibe to the fact that every detail has been thought through including a bar designed so bartenders and patrons sitting at the bar are eye to eye. The food was also amazing. I am not easily blown away but the quality, flavors, aromas, and textures were all just perfect. My only regret is we couldn't eat more dishes. We shared 5 dishes and I can't tell you which is my favorite. We will definitely back next time we are in Bushwick and I am sure I'll make a trip there just for the Monkey King. read more

What I learned yesterday, is when selecting a restaurant dont just look at the good reviews and instagram. Read the bad reviews also because I have had the same experience as some of the bad reviews. For best context, I live in DC, I am from Brooklyn and often drive home to see my family and friends. While in DC I came across this restaurant and the food looked great! The esthetic also looked pretty cool. I made a reservation for 5 for the only day I could go out and invited my cousin and friends. It is the evening after a small snow storm and 25 degrees outside - context. Upon arrival, I was greeted by the host. He was extremely sweet. He was just doing his job. Before we could even check in he stopped us in our tracks and told us about their no bar program. I mean I was extremely confused and quickly went into planner mode. He basically said some days they do their no bar program and they don't serve wine or cocktails. He said he had tried to call me and let me know. When I looked at my phone I had a missed call from him 1 hour and 15 minutes before my reservation. This is typically the time someone is getting ready or en route to travel to their reservation. If you do not serve alcohol after a work day when you have a swanky new restaurant, please call the person when they make the reservation so they can choose a new restaurant. Or at best call them the night before to confirm their reservation and then tell them about your "bar program". He said we can go and get wine and there is a cork fee. I assumed that the cork fee one standard price. I run out in the cold, in 5 in heels, slipping and sliding through the snow and ice with a fur on to a nearby wine and liquor store and purchase three bottles. Spent $80 on the bottles. On the way back my friend mentions, that she can not believe that we have to pay a "$30 cork fee per bottle". I did not hear that and usually with a cork fee it is a one time fee so I was certain she was incorrect. A $30 cork fee per bottle when you tell someone the moment of you do not have alcohol and they have to run to the store to buy wine last minute like this is a college pregame, is crazy. I walk back inside with the bottles and ask to confirm if the cork fee per bottle. The gentleman says yes. Again, he is very respectful and sweet. I ask if I could speak to his manager, again every single person with me is confused. A lady comes over with a heavy energy. She was also standing there when I first arrived. The way she looked at us and was talking to us initially was gross but I was ignoring her and speaking with the host because he was respectful. He would say "you can purchase wine with a cork fee". Our reservation was 7:00pm, at 7:05 pm she was telling us to "go drink somewhere else and come back". It was as though she was being sarcastic. When she comes over I mention to her I received a missed call from them one hour and 15 minutes before my reservation and a $30 per bottle cork fee is unacceptable when you are telling people in heels to run out in the snow and ice to purchase bottles of their own. I wanted to have an understanding of where they got this $30 per bottle cork fee. Very snarky she tells me "I am not just the manager, I am the owner" like I am suppose to be impressed. Anddd? Let's go back to the cork fee. She then tells us that the fee was mentioned before we left out to get the bottle. Now arguing with me she does not hear that I am explaining that I did not hear that it was per bottle because usually a cork fee is one standard price. I asked well if you guys have a built in bar and wine glasses why don't you guys sell alcohol? I am confused, what is this program and why is their a cork fee. Like this is when you can be honest and say I don't have a liquor license or I cant afford liquor. She then proceeds to tell me that the glasses I am looking at are not "wine glasses but coupe glasses". I said ma'am coupe glasses are for champagne and cocktails and right beside your coupes are wine glasses, she then looks and says "those are our personal glasses from home for our personal wine". The woman "owner" then says that we can leave if we do not understand. She then says many people understand and purchase bottles with the cork fee. I look around and the restaurant was empty. She said "because its a tuesday night". We left, it took us 30 min to find another restaurant with reservations that were not filled on a tuesday night. lol. We had great food and drinks and enjoyed our evening. I wish them the best and hope they last in Brooklyn with their "bar program", in short this restaurant is a carry out. Six very successful African American woman being talked to in that kind of way and with no respect in a restaurant we really wanted try felt very uncomfortable. Do better! Maybe the owner does not need to be front of house, it seemed as though she does not have any hospitality experience, just an owner! UPDATE: The owners charged us $300 for a cancel fee. read more

I've ordered for delivery twice but I don't know if there'll be any further orders. Maybe a visit indoors once they can accommodate. First time the delivered food was pretty tasty, no complaints. I decided to try new items the second time around and wow what a change. Every item was beyond bland. What a disappointment and waste of money. I was so hungry because delivery took so long (I'm roughly 2mi away) I ate the food at the temperature it was (barley lukewarm). I added seasoning I had to try and help this disaster however because it was not being reheated they helped just enough to not break down in hangry tears. The only thing two of the dishes had an abundance of was heat. Leftovers were super yummy though (made pasta/removed the "flavors" from the chicken dish and added seasoning). Overall I hope they taste test next time or keep a closer eye on their measurements because the first time has me wanting to give it a final shot. read more

What a wonderful addition to the neighborhood. Everything is super clean and mostly organic. Great vegetarian options. Wonderful welcoming and enthusiastic staff. This place is incredible! I visited it for the first time today with a good friend. We ordered a lot of food. Shrimp toast, wok fried string beans with smoked tofu, roasted duck fried rice, double garlic eggplant & cumin lamb ribs. The owner even gifted us scallion pancakes as well. The food was absolutely delicious! A1. The shrimp toast came with a curry sauce that has a nice spicy kick to it. The wok fried string beans typically comes with beef but being pescatarian, they switched with smoked tofu for me. The scallion pancakes had the right amount of crunch and flake. The double garlic eggplant had a delightful buttery taste and the sauce was too tasty for real life. My friend ate the duck fried rice and dibs and couldn't stop raving about it. Honestly what made this experience charming, welcoming and a reason to plan more visits, aside from the food, was the owner, Harvey. We visited around lunch time not realizing dinein wasn't available, but still wanted to try it out, so we decided to do takeout and planned to sit in the seats outside the restaurant. Instead, to avoid the cold, the owner invited us to eat our food at the bar even though they weren't open for dine in or wait service yet. Little did we know, we had been speaking with the owner the entire time. After we were seated the owner came over and shared the story about how the business got started and rose above difficult times during the pandemic, the story behind the restaurant's name, the rich generational history of his family's influence in culinary arts. The owner is a incredibly cool and humble human. I'm so glad I had the opportunity to experience The Monkey King and can't wait to experience it again.
