Our server Lance was all you could dream about. He was so detailed oriented and checked on us throughly. We got there and the place is open and gorgeous. Well lit for a romantic night or out with some friends. The food came out together which I love. The boa buns were warm and soft was ordered for the table. The general t'so has some kick to it, as to where the pineapple adds some sweetness to modulate the spice. The black pepper steak was seasoned to perfection and was told it was cooked to softness as I was told (I don't eat beef ). Crab fried rice was taken home and devoured by the time I walked in. They appreciated the zestful taste and not too salty. We would definitely return and enjoyed the place and service.
Birthday Dinner! I chose The Monkey King as the spot to celebrate my nieces birthday & a celebration it was. As soon as we walked in we were greeted by the hostess. We sat at the bar, ordered a few drinks until our table was ready. After about 10mins we were shown to our table. Our waitress quickly came there after to introduce herself along with walk us through the menu. She made great recommendations regarding portion sizes and how much food we should be ordering for a party of 3. We ordered sooo much food... scallion pancakes, Peking Duck, char siu, pan fried chicken dumplings, stir fried Bok choy, roasted duck fat fried rice. Although everything was good the char siu and duck were my standouts! So flavorful and perfectly portioned for the 3 of us to share. Our waitress was amazing! Consistently checking on us, presenting the cake I bought for my niece and making sure our wine glasses stayed full. The owners also came over towards the end of our meal to introduce themselves as well. The Monkey King is a true gem!! We'll definitely be back.
New years Eve Eve! I wish Yelp had half stars. I'd give it a 3.5. We made reservations for 3 and unfortunately the 3rd was running too late. We arrived on time amd were seated at the bar. This particular night they were short staffed and that did put a damper on things in the beginning. We didn't actually get seated until after an hour. The staff just seemed overwhelmed and not really attentive. Had to wave down staff for updates. The food was good though. We tried the beef chow fun, shrimp toast. Garlic chicken. Chicken pot stickers, marinated cucumber, carb fried rice and the char su. The char su was great but I wanted it served hot. My favorite things were the shrimp toast with that curry sauce and the crab rice. The beef was a bit too salty for me. The drink I wanted wasn't available apparently. The ingredients ran out. He said he would make me a French 75 and.. I hated it. The place is cute. Weird how the door placement is. Confusing to get in. There was no one in the front to greet me. I just walked over to my friend at the bar. I did like a coat area especially since it was freezing that day. All in all glad I tried it. Not sure if I'd rush back. Nothing was WOW for me . Heads up they dont tell you they charge extra for sauces that they give with the small plates. Which is weird. There is also a 3% surcharge for cards and automatic 20% on all bills for gratuity.
As a UA alum, I had to check this place out after hearing the owner was also an alum. Made a reservation for dinner with no problem and was seated right away. The vibe here is great--low lighting and a smaller, more intimate space. I started with their version of an old-fashioned, the Atelier. Wasn't really my thing since it was heavy on the bitters, but that could just be the bartender's pour. Food-wise, everything hit. The char siu was amazing--super flavorful with a nice crust and juicy inside. The fried oyster mushrooms were probably my favorite dish of the night. They legit taste like calamari. I'd recommend asking for a dipping sauce to go with them. For the main, I went with the lobster lo mein and wow... absolutely incredible. Flavorful, filling, and honestly big enough to share with 2-3 people. It came with green beans on the side which rounded it out nicely. Service was on point. Kat and Nana were super friendly, quick, and made sure we were taken care of all night. Easily a 5/5 experience. Definitely recommend.
My husband and I celebrated our four-year anniversary here, and if I could give this place ten stars, I absolutely would! The restaurant far exceeded my expectations. Our server, Nana, was amazing -- super friendly and very knowledgeable about the menu. She even surprised us with two glasses of champagne to celebrate our anniversary, which was such a thoughtful touch and made the night even more special. The food was incredible! The atmosphere was perfect -- not too bright, with great music playing in the background. For appetizers, we ordered the pan-fried dumplings, char siu, fried mushrooms, and scallion pancakes. I normally don't like mushrooms, but I devoured these -- they were that good! The dumplings were fried to perfection, and the sauce paired perfectly. The dishes are served family-style, which we loved. We got the wok-fried string beans -- they were soooooo good -- and the roasted duck fat fried rice, which was absolutely delicious. It was my first time trying duck, and I'm glad I did! We wanted to try the lamb, but it was sold out -- just another reason to come back. Everything was amazing: the staff, the food, and the vibe. I can't wait to return and try more dishes from the menu!
I'm still dreaming about the shrimp toast, eggplant, and the crispy chicken. We were there for a special occasion and all of the staff went out of their way to note it, which was very appreciated! The ambiance was perfect too - I'd come back for a drink at the bar or to eat again!
Our family took an hour and half trip to this restaurant since it was promoted as a Bengali Chinese fusion place. We made reservation in advance to ensure our spot. Upon arrival we were seated in our table within minutes. The place appeared modern and slick, cool dining tables and a dining bar that is little below the restaurant floor. But I found the restaurant's ambiance too dark, it was hard to see anything around the restaurant. The iPhone taking all the pictures in night mode, that's how dark it was. The menu was via QR code but the restaurant had no reception for Verizon. I asked them for wifi and they gave me one that had network problems. So I had to walk outside multiple times to load the menu. Once I read thru the menu I was disappointed to see it was full of regular Chinese appetizers and entrees, nothing Bengali about any of them. We ordered whole bunch of items, starting with the soup dumplings. The soup dumplings barely had any soup, I counter, about five drops came of each dumpling. Shrimp shau mai and pearl dumplings both were basic. The vegetable dishes like pickled cucumbers, eggplant with garlic sauce and boiled bok choy were actually far better good dishes. Chicken wings were also good. The best dish of the night was the lamb ribs. They were soft, juicy, tender, had amazing taste. But it took them an hour to bring the dish out. We finished all our other food, and then waited 10-15 minutes more to finally see the lamb dish arrive at our table. The service was pretty good. Our server was very polite and friendly. The staff cordially greeted me for father's day. Although the dinner was fine, I felt like for the price we paid the dishes could have been far better quality and quantity. I had eaten most of these dishes in other Chinese restaurants for half the price.
The food here is AMAZING! Portions are big enough to share with one or two people depending on how much you eat. The vibe was chill, definitely packed on a Saturday night. The service was pretty good, the servers check on you to make sure everything is good. The bok choy was sooo good and flavorful. The beef chow mein was my favorite dish: the meat was soooo tender and there was a lot of flavor. The garlic eggplant was also very good. It is a bit pricey but worth the trip because the food was amazing.
5 stars. This place hit all of my expectations. Great playlist. The restaurant is more spacious than I realized as well. You can certainly host a large group here. All of the staff were extremely warm and attentive. I wish I remembered our server's name, but she was wonderful alongside all of the others that came to check on us. Note: all of the food items are brought out separately, so keep that in mind. There was a delicious scallop option with bacon I think on top. Delicious I normally do not order chicken when I go out, but the crispy garlic fried chicken was out of this world. The skin on the chicken was fried too perfection and not like a crispy fried chicken, but still delicious and the marinade really made it down to the bone. My favorite thing was the fried Sichuan oyster mushrooms. But if you have a sensitivity to peppercorn, keep in mind this dish contains it. The only item on the menu I was slightly disappointed by was the general tso shrimp. The flavor was amazing, but the texture of the shrimp with the breading on the shrimp was a little off. Maybe overcooked? Also, they had a really delicious version of an espresso martini. If you sign up for inKInd I think you can get a discount as well.
2 stars for the food. 5 stars for service. Family saw a reel online and decided to try this place. They will only sit you when your whole party arrive. The staff are very nice and friendly. Attentive through out the service. Once you enter, you see the bar area in a lower ground which is cool. After-hour vibes, dimmed light, comfortable seats. The food is mediocre. They advertise as Chinese-Bengali fusion but there's no Bengali food expect for one dessert. Very basic for all the dishes. Small portion even though they say it's "sharing" style. Nothing comes with rice. The only dish I like it's chicken wings, tender and wrapped with flavors. Also I can smell weed from our table. Nothing against people who smoke but I really hate that smell.
Surprisingly I really enjoyed this restaurant-- and this is coming from a native New Yorker that has a fair share of Chinese food in Chinatown Soup dumplings were better than expected. Better than some dimsum places even Char siu we all really liked. The ginger oil on the side was a cute add on. We really liked the fried mushrooms. String beans are typical and beef cubes were typical. Monkey king is a drink with baijiu and this alcohol is strong. So if you do not like the alcohol or the smell or sorghum you may not want to get it.
A fellow Yelp! Elite shared this restaurant with me at an event. I definitely appreciate the recommendation as it turned out to be a pretty decent date night. The food was good. The menu offers enough options for all tastebuds and the trendy decor sets the vibe for a night out that's less on the casual side. The crab fried rice was meh but the chicken was good. Cocktails were a bit pricey but that's par for the course at every dining establishment. I wasn't a fan of the specialty cocktail I adventureouly trieda so if you're not peaked by the description just go with what your know (i.e. an old fashioned). Service was meh. We had to wait for cutlery and the sauce we paid extra for. Also, the server led with bottled and sparkling water which makes you think tap / filtered is not an option. It's a cool spot to check out so yeah, enjoy.
The food was good. We opted to do family style. For 5 people we were able to get 3 different entrees, 3 appetizers ,2 dishes of the rice, and 2 desserts all to share. The waiter was really attentive and pleasant. The restaurant is nice, the bar is beautiful, the front dining area is spacious (great for warm weather), The rear dining area is small and intimate. I'd visit again.

They said they couldn't separate the crab fried rice with the salmon. Paid full price for veggie options when they clearly could've given us the salmon and veggie fried rice. Lunar year tasting menu has no price. Cost us $85 each. Save your money and go to Nowon for $50 each and way better food. Place and bar is super cool but come on man. I don't leave reviews in general but for the price we paid versus the food we got, I had to say something. read more
Went here on a Thursday night for my anniversary dinner and had quite a pleasant experience. The restaurant is small but clean and sexy. The bar is the centerpiece of the place and is really cool. We started off with some drinks which were strong and delicious! For appetizers we got the shrimp toast and chard's both of which were hefty portions and flavorful and really good. For mains we got the duck fat fried rice which I read was really popular- it was good but nothing exceptional, we ordered some of the cinnamon soy sauce to amp up the flavor a bit. We also got the garlic chicken which was bomb! So good and a big portion as well. 2 apps and 3 entrees would have easily fed 4 people. For dessert we had the mango lassi cake which was huge and beautiful. It was a good cake but I didn't really get the lassi flavor. I wish there was more south Asian inspo in the menu but overall a great experience. read more

Monkey king was great! Ambiance & music was great! We received a warm welcome from the hostess after entering through the corridor and were seated promptly for our 9pm reservation. Our waiter for the evening was Sean and he was a gem. He went through the specials and asked if we had any dietary restrictions before making a recommendation. My friend and I got the lobster lo mein special, string beans, shrimp toast and crab fried rice with the house spritz cocktail & we loved everything. The food was flavorful and plentiful. All of their dishes are meant to be shared plates, so it was perfect for trying a mix of things. We are definitely going back! read more

This Monkey is KWEEN. Getchu the shrimp toast EXPEDITIOUSLY, still not over the crunch and freshness. The Atelier drink was smoky with a punchy bitterness I enjoyed. The duck & mushroom soup dumplings are so rich and well seasoned. Lastly, the double garlic eggplant...BONGOS!! The restaurant was beautiful! We ordered the chicken dumplings, cumin lamb ribs, crab fried rice, egg plant, and shrimp toast. Shrimp toast - it was really good but definitely on the oilier side. Loved the sauce that came with it! Chicken dumplings - i would skip this one. I found the dumpling skin to be to thick and doughy Lamb ribs - this was just okay to me Crab fried rice - really good! The seafood sauce that accompanies it paired really well with it Eggplant - so good!!!!! Still thinking about it The only other thing is that the tables were way too close to eachother. The waiters bumped into/almost bumped into me multiple times while helping table next to us. Not their fault but just wanted to leave that note. I could also barely hear my friend because of how close the table next to us was. read more

The food was mid. The green beans were the best part and they tasted like non greasy takeout green beans. Thats the only thing that was not greasy. (See: the shrimp toast and the ribs.) The ambiance and overall vibe of this place was top notch. Love the music being played in the background. I went here with my fiance and some friends and we enjoyed ourselves. For the starters, we started off with Char-Siu which was so tender and juicy. For the entrees, we did shared plates. We ordered the Crispy Garlic Fried Chicken, double garlic eggplant, roasted duck fried rice, golden egg pineapple fried shrimp, and black pepper steak. honourable mentions must go out to the deepfake lassi cocktail. i was skeptical at first and but i am now obsessed. the fried shrimp toast was delicious and nostalgic to the shrimp toast i used to have growing up. the char siu is a must. the crunch and acidity of the pickled veggies on the side were the perfect match for the sweetness and tenderness of the pork. i was slightly disappointed with the xo crab fried rice since i heard raving reviews but the beef chow fun definitively compensated! all in all, a wonderful experience of taste and textures that i will fondly remember. it's important to note that @themonkeykingnyc is booked and busy, so a reservation is definitely advised read more

Came to the Monkey King last weekend and it exceeded my expectations. From the atmosphere, to the service, to the music, and the food, it was one of the best experiences I've had in awhile. Started off with the shrimp toast followed by the pan fried chicken dumplings and they were both divine. The margarita might be one of the best I've ever had. The touch of honey and spice was absolutely perfect. For entrees I got the pepper steak and the asparagus fried rice and I don't understand how everything just got better and better with each bite. Overall I would give this restaurant a 10/10 and will definitely be back again. read more

the monkey king is a restaurant that i highly recommend, but make sure to get a reservation beforehand. since i was dining alone, i managed to secure a spot at the bar through resy just an hour before. when i arrived, the place was bustling with activity, and i couldn't help but appreciate the unique and stunning interior. whether you're solo dining at the bar, looking for a cozy and intimate atmosphere, or a lively gathering, the monkey king offers a versatile setting that caters to different social experiences. although it took a bit of time to get a menu and catch the attention of the staff (understandable considering how busy they were on a saturday evening), i was seated promptly. it did take around 20 minutes to get my cocktail, but once i got started, the service was excellent. i tried the deepfake lassi, which was described as turmeric infused rums, coconut cream, and orange. the flavor was reminiscent of a boozy mango lassi, with a delightful combination of citrus cream and creamsicle-like taste. it provided an interesting contrast when paired with spicy food. i placed my order for the chicken dumplings and beef chow fun pretty soon after. one cool thing about the menu was that it had a section where customers could leave reviews, so i got to read about other people's thoughts too. the pan fried chicken dumplings included 'three-yellow' organic chicken with a cinnamon red oil-infused soy sauce. the flavors were a delightful blend of warming cinnamon, salty soy, and tangy vinegar. the cinnamon was almost caramelized into the wrapper, resulting in a warming and savory experience. the combination of flavors was dynamic and intriguing. the beef chow fun consisted of wok-fried fresh rice noodles, ribeye, seasonal greens, bean sprouts, red onions, and scallions. it had a classic flavor profile with incredibly fresh beef, complemented by the subtle taste of scallions and red onions. i also added the house-made chili oil on the side, which gave it a fantastic kick. while i enjoyed my meal, the bartender even shared an amazing story about the owner's father and his love for the dish i was enjoying. it added an extra layer of appreciation and connection to the food. what sets the monkey king apart is that it's not your typical "asian fusion" spot. each dish still manages to honor traditional styles while incorporating unique and exciting flavors. i'm lucky to live nearby so that i can return to this gem in the future. read more

TLDR - MK is a solid 3.5 with all the potential in the world to grow as a new business. Unfortunately, with the exception of the dim-sum offerings, there is a lack of consistency in food preparation. I have to agree w another reviewer as many dishes came bland or overcooked over a 5 time order case study. As someone that has worked in the restaurant industry/hospitality, I can tell that they care about their business; however, they are not accessible to be contacted via their phone # if you might have Qs about the menu/reservations, etc. I can only speak to delivery orders. Uber Eats set up does not offer the option for notes. For instance the string beans say they have a vegan option, which I believed would allow for the preparation without the ribeye, but there is no option to toggle or write in the notes For me it is more about consistency in orders. I have tried them 5 times. The first time was good. I ordered almost a dish from every menu category. Scallion pancakes, char siu baos, char siu, tea smoked ribs, duck rice, string beans w ribeye and olives, which prompted my desire to test the waters again for lunch. I noticed that they offered a decent special with roast duck and char siu bowls that came with rice and greens. So I placed an order for those 2 dishes plus the mouthwatering chicken. The mouthwatering chicken was a bit off putting as it appears undercooked, despite steamed. Not sure if that is the look that they are going for, but I prefer my meat browned and cooked so the pale, pimply skin was a bit unappetizing for me. The chicken garlic rice and greens that came with all of the lunch special dishes were flavorless...like missing salt and spice. The roast duck could have also used some salt. I tried throwing it in the oven to crisp up a bit, but it wasn't properly seasoned, so I didn't finish it. The string bean dish, as you can tell by the pic have come pretty overdone and soggy. They had no bite to them. In addition to the reworking of the chicken fat garlic rice, the duck rice to me is also another call out. For $16 there isn't much duck to be found, although I know it uses quite a few offerings from the duck such as yolk, etc. but it has come quite a few times pretty bland as well. I know duck is an overall expensive menu offering, but this needs some work. To pricey to not be perfected. Also has theeee worst smell a day later, so not ideal for leftovers. I am not expecting things to be over salted, but honestly my palette desires a bit more seasoning to things. When I noticed the difference in taste upon receiving the additional orders I placed for lunch, I was under the impression that the evening and daytime chefs were on different levels of expertise, but I am not sure because other evening orders have had some issue w taste as well. I didn't enjoy the cumin ribs either, which sits on a bed of greens causing it to be pretty soggy upon arrival. They are spiced for sure, but nothing about it wows. The other tea smoked ones are better, albeit at times being somewhat cloyingly sweet. The char sui is among the better ones I have had. The roast on the pork is well done. All in all, taking a look into the seasoning of dishes is recommended. Tasting is also recommended. They are a bit too far from me , so it is an easy pass, but I wish them the best on their culinary endeavors. read more

The restaurant itself is beautiful, service was good, we were checked on often and they changed plates throughout our meal. A take on some authentic Chinese dishes. We had the fried oyster mushrooms, cumin lamb ribs, shrimp toast, duck fat fried rice, and beef chow fun. The mushrooms were my fave, flavor was balanced and mushrooms were fried well. The shrimp toast was probably my second favorite, great flavors and a good crunch. The lamb was seasoned pretty unevenly, some ribs had massive amounts of seasoning and some less, also most rubs seemed to have more fat than meat on it. The duck fat fried rice was ok the blander side for me, could've been because I ate it after some super seasoned lamb. The beef chow fun was pretty good as well. All in all, my party felt that our meal was a bit over priced for just decent food and portions on the smaller side. The space itself was very nice and the service was good. read more
I've ordered for delivery twice but I don't know if there'll be any further orders. Maybe a visit indoors once they can accommodate. First time the delivered food was pretty tasty, no complaints. I decided to try new items the second time around and wow what a change. Every item was beyond bland. What a disappointment and waste of money. I was so hungry because delivery took so long (I'm roughly 2mi away) I ate the food at the temperature it was (barley lukewarm). I added seasoning I had to try and help this disaster however because it was not being reheated they helped just enough to not break down in hangry tears. The only thing two of the dishes had an abundance of was heat. Leftovers were super yummy though (made pasta/removed the "flavors" from the chicken dish and added seasoning). Overall I hope they taste test next time or keep a closer eye on their measurements because the first time has me wanting to give it a final shot. read more

I'm not sure exactly how to describe the cuisine except that it's an eclectic explosion of unexpected, palette- pleasing flavors that remind me of my travels throughout the unique cultures of Asia. From the roasted, garlic-infused crispy chicken to the freshly made soup dumplings, sambal-flavored grilled skate, and cinnamon-sprinkled toast with coconut curry, every dish is brilliantly and creatively crafted to evoke fond memories of roads well-traveled, but with a surprising twist. It seems that they use high-quality meats and vegetables. Check out the double-edged beautifully-made chopsticks. Bonus points to them for using local vendors whenever possible. I dig giving back to the community. The Monkey King is bound to wow even the most discerning royal patrons! Bon appetit. read more

No complaints visiting The Monkey King went on a day they weren't serving alcohol was probably the only downside but other then that I would highly recommend hitting this restaurant up. A must order is Char Siu and Cumin Lamb Ribs, trust me. read more

Monkey King rips. Period. I ordered late night online, and showed up to discover I had mistakenly placed the order to be picked up the next day. EVEN THOUGH THEY HAD ALREADY PUT EVERYTHING AWAY TO CLOSE SHOP, they fired up the kitchen again to make my order. Absolute legends. You know it's good when the bao buns are crisped up so nice on the bottom. I will be back for more! read more

They're not officially open but I might have secretly snuck in a peek to see what it looks like inside and they have a sunken bar that looks like it is done with renovations and some very cool seating and layouts inside! Onto the food .....the food...was delicious!!!! We got the shrimp toast, which is totally not what I expected. I thought I was getting a shrimp spread or something on toast, but this was some interesting redesign of some shrimp dim sum with a crispy outer shell that came with an amazing Coconut curry sauce! We also got their special Eggplant, the Crispy Garlic Chicken that had a beautiful golden crisp outside and such juicy tender meat underneath, the Malaysian Sambal, which was flavored so well and the fish was cooked to perfection (it was so supple), the Sauteed String Beans with some fillet of beef. We got a bunch of stuff and honestly, everything smelled great, looked amazing, and was just overall mouth watering goodness. The Monkey King will for sure be a smash when they officially open their doors. Can't wait and I highly recommend their food! read more

I #decided to order online from this place, because I wanted to see if this place really existed or not. I walk down this street occasionally and never seen this place before, so I was skeptical. But it really does #exist! Under construction right now though. Available for takeout. I'm glad my #experiment worked, because the food is really good. I really liked the Mouthwatering Chicken Rice Bowl. Good mala, but not crazy or overwhelming like Mission Chinese can be. The egg and rice tasted good too for things I normally don't think of as being #flavorful on their own. read more

Do they have a liquor license? I saw on their site that they are charging corkage fee but I didn't see any booze on their online menu.
Hi Andrew, we are currently obtaining our liquor license and waiting for construction to be finished in our dining room to start serving officially.
