I've never had a need to eat here, but with drag show brunches on Saturday, we bought tickets. When people say the food is pretty mid, believe them. It's mid. When my teen was texting me from across the table to quietly tell me how bad her croissant sandwich was, it amused me. I understood. My potpie was nothing special at all either. I did like the accompanying salad on the side. I liked the dressing. The crust on the potpie needed a little more color and the broth more richness though. My Bloody Mary was good. I've always wanted to experience this Christmas experience. I finally did it. Granted, I was able to obtain a table for a single person via OpenTable.com. The restaurant is located on the 7th floor and very easy to locate. After checking in with the host staff, I was seated within a few minutes. The dining room was beautifully decorated. Jose, server, had greeted me shortly after I was seated. Since I already previewed the menu, I knew what I was going to order..... the Turkey Dinner. Granted, the restaurant was busy, the meal was delivered within a few minutes. The meal tasted more like a banquet meal for a large event. Overall, the food was okay. However, the service was great. Our group was in town for a family wedding and stopped by to look at the windows. We ran up to the Walnut Room to see the tree and were pleasantly surprised that they could accommodate the six adults + one baby next to the tree for lunch. As kids, we used to come here sometimes for Christmas and the magic really is in the tree and decorations. The food was decent but nothing to write home about and our server was distracted and seemingly bored when at our table. The bussers and other waitstaff were very friendly and efficient though! As a note on the drinks menu, it says that if you order a drink you can add a holiday mug for an extra $5. One person in our party had one from years ago and wanted another to add to her collection so she ordered a mediocre cocktail for the mug. Our annual holiday tradition isn't complete without a meal at The Walnut Room! This year the decorations were a nod to the great Marshall Field's! The tree and designs revolved around the Marshall Field's logo (IYKYK), a homage to a Chicago icon. We ordered the lobster bisque which is full of small lobster pieces and light touch of sherry, very tasty. The shrimp cocktail had nice, plump shrimps and well chilled. We had the famous chicken pot pie which came with a small side salad. The dressing on the salad complimented the pot pie well and was delicious. We also ordered the short rib with mashed potatoes. The short rib was very tender and juicy, the gravy and mashed potatoes made it all a decadent dish. Lastly we also had the Walnut Room Burger and added bacon. This was just mediocre. We didn't get to order the preparation of the burger so it came well done. It wasn't dry, but definitely not something we'd order again. Our server was so friendly and knowledgeable. She took great care of us making sure our glasses were always full and checked in often to see if we needed anything else. It was very busy, but she still stopped by the table frequently. I was born and raised in Chicago and never been to The Walnut Room. I added to my holiday list this year and made reservations early. You would need to book in advance when the holiday season is approaching. The reservations fills up quickly and sometimes hard to get a good time slot. I was lucky to get an afternoon time alot on a Saturday. Since I was dining alone, I was able to get a table close to the main attraction. A table close to the giant size Christmas Tree. Of course it was crowded with people from everywhere. A holiday experience to enjoy with your family or a self date. It didn't take long for my server to come to my table with a friendly greeting. I was poured a cold glass of water and handed a menu. Loved the festive decor. The service was quick and everyone was friendly. I admire how this years tradition theme was a tribute to Marshall Field's. The Tree colors were green and blue. The menu really didn't have a wide variety of food chooses. Honestly, coming here is a tradition that should be abolished, but every year like the glutton I am for punishment, I go to every end of the earth to ensure my family gets to spend hours of stress and anxiety in an effort to go there for terrible service, very mediocre food and the overrated cocktails that cost $25 so I can add another unneeded glass to the collection. But would it be Christmas without this tradition?! So here's my recommendation, if you haven't started this tradition already, do not start now. Don't fall for the hype. The food is nothing special. Overpriced. The waits are outrageous. The service is actually horrendous, but the tree is the real reason we continue to come. It is a beautiful ambiance and that's really it's only redeeming quality. So there's the cold hard truth. Had a great start to our holiday Chicago trip at the Walnut Room. I actually ended up snagging this reservation the day before after trying for like a week to get in with Resy alerts! I got the Walnut Room Salad and my boyfriend got the chicken pot pie and both were delicious. We also got a couple of the holiday cocktails! Everything was good, but I'm not sure it lived up to all of the hype that we heard about. Our slice of pie was also laughably small for the price. Annoying thing was the photographers, they came around like right before we left and took our photo for our complimentary post card and ours said she would be back once the photo printed. We finished our meal and waited like an additional 20 minutes for her to come back and she never did. We ended up finding her as we were leaving and she said she couldn't find us?? we literally didn't move. I made a reservation to Walnut Room over 2 months in advance (they were literally gone a minute after the reservations opened). We arrived 15 minutes early as suggested and I'm glad we did. There was a long line just to get checked in and took pretty much 15 minutes to get to the hostess stand. We were thankfully seated next to the Christmas tree to my daughter's delight. Immediately after sitting down we were greeted by the photographer who whisked us to the front of the Christmas tree to take a family photo. We received a fun commemorative photo postcard for free. After we sat back down we were visited by several different fairy princesses who sprinkled fairy dust and gave my daughter a matching fairy stone. They really took the time to talk to her and really made this experience special for her. I had the chicken pot pie while my daughter had the kid's chicken pot pie, fruit, apple juice, and sugar cookie. Hubby had the burger as recommended by our server. We shared a slice of the Frango mint chocolate ice cream pie for dessert. The pot pie was just as good as I expected and the side salad was refreshing. My daughter also said her pot pie was yummy and loved the pieces of star crust in hers. After she finished her sugar cookie she literally licked all sprinkles from the plate. She received a free mug at the end which I thought was also a nice gesture from the restaurant. There are small bathrooms in the back of the restaurant but it's big enough to accommodate the number of people inside. The women's bathroom had 3 stalls and 2 working sinks and there were so many women with kids coming in and out that I found it chaotic. The Walnut Room is a true Chicago holiday tradition and one that my family has enjoyed for more than thirty consecutive years. It is sentimental and special to us, even though the overall experience has changed over time. The food and service are not what they used to be many years ago, but once you understand that, the last several seasons have actually been very consistent. We always visit during Christmas and it is important to remember that the restaurant is incredibly busy and staffed with many seasonal employees. Service is not five star dining, but everyone works hard and does their best. If you come during the holidays, you should expect a little waiting and a very lively atmosphere. For us, that is part of the experience and the tradition. I always order the Asiago chicken or the meatloaf and they are both very good. My family loves the pot pie and the ravioli as well. Breakfast has never appealed to me since it is served buffet style, but lunch and dinner have always been enjoyable. If you are looking for a perfectly polished restaurant experience, this may not be the place during December. It was so fun to visit the Walnut room for the holiday season. The Christmas tree was decorated for the Marshall Fields theme. The princesses walked around taking pictures with kids, very reminiscent of my childhood. The food wasn't too bad either, I loved my mom's mushroom ravioli, it was very creamy but delicious. The salmon and asparagus risotto was also very good. The salmon was a tad more cooked than medium but the risotto was pretty okay and I'm glad I had gotten the cream sauce on the side because I didn't like it at all. You come to the Walnut Room for the Christmas ambiance--period. The decorations, the sparkling trees leading up to the restaurant, and the historic setting are undeniably charming. The room itself is beautiful during the holidays, but the food continues to be just... okay. I ordered the turkey dinner, and my turkey was so dry it was almost difficult to chew. The rest of my family enjoyed their meals (braised short rib, mushroom ravioli, caramelized salmon, and a kids' mac n' cheese), so it may have just been my dish. Side note: we were told the kids' meal was the only one that comes with a keepsake Walnut Room mug, which is a cute touch. Our server was fantastic, warm, funny, and definitely the highlight of the dining experience. If you're trying to book a reservation, prepare for a challenge. TIP: Set OpenTable notifications for multiple days and time slots. That's the only way we snagged a cancellation. We were seated at the table farthest from the Christmas tree. I know you can't request a tree-side table, but being placed by the window was rough. While the city view was lovely, everyone in our group was freezing and ready to leave early. My niece was excited to meet the holiday fairy, but she never came to the back section. When we asked, she said, "It's dark and cold back there so I miss them often," which honestly explained the whole situation, but still disappointed. They also offer a Santa Brunch, which I haven't tried, but I could see kids loving it. Final take: If you've never been, go at least once for the tradition, the décor, and the tree, it's a classic Chicago holiday experience. But if you're a local who has visited before, you're not missing much by skipping a year (or a few). It's great for out-of-town guests but not a must-do annually. The tree is iconic although I wish they would do really unique ornaments and themes like they did in the earlier days of the restaurant. The food is pretty good but not a lot of selections. I've always wanted to get reservations here- You really have to snag these fast once they open during the Holiday season- even logging on the day the bookings opened I still got the 2nd weekend in November- everything else closer to Christmas and after was booked. The Walnut Room is such a iconic space- you really go for the decor and experience. The tree and theme are always so much fun. This year was Marshall Field's, which is so special. We had 1:30pm reservations on a Saturday and when we got to the 7th floor there was a long line of people waiting who had reservations. They were still seating 12:45pm- just be prepared to wait a little bit even if you're on time. We checked in with someone who had an ipad farther down the line. Then stood in line for about 20 minutes until we were seated. We did get a table RIGHT by the tree which is amazing. The only down side is people constantly come up by your table because they are taking pictures with the tree. Our server was really great and explained the menu and what she recommended. To me- you go here for the experience- the food can be hit or miss. Certain items are really good and others eh or just average. We started with a candian cheese soup and a petit walnut salad. The soup wasn't good- it needed more seasoning. The salad was good but pretty basic. The dressing was like a sweet onion flavor. I got the mushroom ravioli which was excellent!! It was flavorful and fresh- she said it was made to order. We also got the turkey dinner that came with stuffing, mashed potatoes, green beans and cranberry sauce. The turkey, green beans, and mashed potatoes were good. The stuffing was gooey and not flavored right- the cranberry sauce was too spiced. We had to get dessert- the cookie platter wasn't that great. My wife has been wanting to have a holiday meal here since moving to Chicago and was able to snag a last minute reservation this past weekend. In short, it's a historical dining room with a beautiful Christmas tree display for the holidays. Service was good, but food was mediocre. Situated on the 7th floor of Macys, we showed up a bit early to wander and read about the history of the Marshall Field and Company Building. The Tiffany's ceiling was pretty cool to see enroute to the Walnut Room. While the Macy's store seemed like it's had better days comparing to some of the pictures I saw of when it was Marshall Fields, the Walnut Room seems to be well maintained and cared for. You can tell that many of the guests make a point to visit with entire family to enjoy a meal together and grab some photos against the beautiful Christmas tree display as a tradition. A professional photographer appeared to be on deck in case you wanted some professional photos done. In addition, a couple fairies made their way around tables with kids to grant wishes for the holidays and new year. All in all wonder ambiance for a nicer holiday meal. For food, we tried the burger and braised beef. Both were underwhelming compared to the vibes of the place. You'd expect a hearty holiday meal, but food all around just was mediocre. We did an order of their famous chicken pot pie for my son, and he ended up eating my burger. Just FYI the kids meal chicken pot pie is just the inside of the pot pie with 2 star crusts. I've been wanting to go to the Walnut Room for some time now. I've snagged a few reservations in the past but it didn't work out. This year was the year! We were early for our reservations and they were able to sit us right away- which was great. They initially tried placing us by a window so in their words "the kids could look outside" which I was disappointed about but not going argue with them. But I did draw the line when they tried to sit us at a 4 person table, when we're a family of 5. I knew we would be cramped, especially wedged between 2 other 2 person tables. I looked around and no one else seemed to be placed in a table that was small for their party... luckily they were able to accommodate us, and placed us at a 6 person table closer to the tree. We had an amazing view and we were lucky enough to also encounter the fairies which were so pretty and sweet to the kids. Our server was great. She was very sweet and kept checking in on us. My oldest ordered off the regular menu, and she still gave him a kids drink,'souvenir mug and kids cookie- which was awesome since he's still technically a kid too. He scarfed down his two Pattie burger and fries- so safe to safe he enjoyed it. I got the chicken pot pie, which was good, but honestly I thought it was going to be utterly amazing. There was something that was lacking in it for me. I did enjoy the side of Petite Walnut Room Salad (including the salad dressing and I'm typically not a salad dressing person). My husband got the braised short ribs and it's was so tender. I did not try it but my husband enjoyed it (along with with my son, who he ended up sharing it with since he scarfed down his macaroni and was still hungry). I loved that we finally got to dine here. It was very difficult getting reservations here during the holidays, but we managed to get a 3PM a couple months in advance. They have a large area with lots of seating. A lot of the tables were unoccupied. They had "fairies" coming around to the tables to grant a wish with glitter which was very cute. We had 3 fairies come up to us which was a bit disruptive. We saw them more than our server. The lobster bisque was average and the lobster did not taste fresh and I'm sure it was imitation lobster. I've never had a lobster bisque with so many chunks of "lobster" which I found odd. The walnut old fashioned was strong, but good. I wish the pot pie had a crust throughout instead of just a round crust plopped on top. The filling was tasty. The others liked their short rib and Asiago chicken. The ambiance inside is lovely and old timey feeling. We sat near the windows and it's great getting a city view from the 7th floor. The Christmas tree is beautiful as well. This is one of those places that everyone goes to for the vibes, tradition, decor, and location. Not so much the food, though it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Food was more ~3 stars, but the servers were friendly and the atmosphere super festive! Definitely make a reservation in advance, or if you must walk in, know that December will probably be near impossible. It's a huge space so you're also unlikely to guarantee a spot near the iconic tree, but you can always take photos there after, or get professional ones for something like $15-20. The other room was still very cozy and nicely decorated. This place is especially good for little kids and older people. Fairy princesses come by regularly and I appreciate how dedicated they were to the magic and lines they had to say. Might be good to come prepared with your wish in mind! The menu changes pretty often, but the mushroom ravioli I got was pretty good. Very rich and the portion size was fine. We had a really great time here a few years back and a few years before that. So, I suppose I was expecting more of the same type of experience we had prior to this (third and final) visit. I guess I'd recommend it for certain people. When my kids were little, the fairies that come around are really special. Not as much for older kids. So, I'd recommend it for small kids. Also, for a lot of ppl it's a tradition, so I'd obviously recommend they keep it going if that's their thing. We had a big party again this year, and reservations are a must. We got seated in a pretty crappy area in the corner on a table that was really difficult to get in and out of. The servers and staff are all really nice, however it's utter chaos. None of the runners know who ordered what- as a former GM, I'd like to see them improve upon reading or entering the seat numbers w the orders so they're not calling out dishes over the loud crowds. They also bring out a lot of incorrect dishes. We had our vegetarian child receive a lobster bisque, and we keep kosher, so that was pretty bad as he ate it bc unbeknownst to him, that it wasn't the vegetarian, Canadian cheese soup he actually ordered. The drink my grown daughter ordered, appeared to be a non alcoholic bar drink, that sounded good and wow. We were, very unpleasantly, surprised to find it brought out in a bottle. It turned out to be just a cheap, small non alcoholic bottled drink. It wasn't even made at their bar, but by the price and deceptive description, it should've been. Half of us liked our food, the other half did not. The prices are very reasonable, I will say that. The tree in the middle is always nice. Next year, and years to follow, we will just shop a little at macys/MFields to see the festive store atmosphere, but for sure this was our last time choosing to dine at the walnut room. Maybe round tables instead of cafeteria style tables would fix the vibe, but the whole feng shui was just off and half of each table seems to have their backs to the tree and ends up facing the parked strollers, a dark hall or a wall. Proper lighting in the corners of the entire dining area would also help. It was pretty depressing where we sat. Nice sconces w Amber Edison bulbs or anything showing they're trying to fix the ambiance would be a welcomed improvement. I think they just rely on the tree to carry the entire dining area and it's a great tree- but it doesn't fix all of the imperfections of the rest of the space. Three stars for the tree and the fairies and the fair pricing on the food items. Staff gets no added stars, bc even though they're nice, too many wrong dishes were brought out. Also, heard there was vallet, but couldn't locate one so used the public lot across the street. $63 for about 2.5 hours, WITH the macys validation. More expensive than any public lot we've ever used in the world. Like, ever- and we're used to LA,SF, Hawaii prices. That hurt to pay lol. If we hadn't been running late, we would've went to find a cheaper lot and just booked it lol. I'll never park there again, thats for real lol. Chicago needs to get Waymo already! Oh one last thing, they had a nice girl who takes pics of your group by the tree, but honestly, my pics of my kids turned out way nicer bc it was how I wanted them and the kids are obviously more relaxed in my pics lol. I think k we got one small free one and then our family bought a few, but we didn't buy any, so I'm not positive, but I think my FIL paid 30$ for two 5'7s? Not sure, I'd recommend taking your own bc it's free and you can get zoomed in, ours were hella far away bc our group was large so to me it could've been anyone in the pictures lol and my eyesight is fine lol but it was too far away compared to using your own phone/camera. read more

Hmmm. 3 stars is generous. If my daughter was younger it would be fair to give this place 3 stars. The food was AWFUL. White lobster bisque? Tasted like salt and cream with imitation lobster pieces thrown in it. The turkey dinner was dry, dressing tasted like the kind you get on a frozen tv dinner and the potatoes had no flavor, no butter. My drink was a vodka tonic Ketel One with Lime. I got some off brand vodka and club soda. Ahhhh what? The photos taken by the ladies at the hostess desk were much nicer than the photographers. The entire staff was amazing and friendly. Shout out to Regis who found out my daughter had a nut allergy and quickly sprang into action to get her a nut free plate (she ordered the pot pie). He was so apologetic and helpful. Our server did not ask about allergies at the table but my daughter didn't disclose that she had allergies. I guess she felt a pot pie was safe? The ambiance was so cute and festive. The service was unhurried and rather attentive. However, after informing them of an allergy and asking for no walnuts they brought out the charcuterie with candied walnuts. We sent it back they brought out another but this time we didn't get almonds or grapes either. The mushroom ravioli was the best of the night. Everything was quite tasty. And a fantastic value. BTW...seats are great by the tree and by the windows. It's such a fun, festive place. The bathrooms however were not good. Obviously not cleaned enough. Maybe it's just me, but I think they could benefit from a dress code. I was a bit shocked at some folks super casual attire. read more

I had gone to Macy's to do a little bit of Christmas shopping. While doing my shopping, I decided to visit the walnut room and see if I can get a table. It was really busy. I wasn't sure if I was able to get a table. But luckily, I was able to get seated with my fiancé. The environment was really nice. They had the Marshall fields Christmas tree up, which looked spectacular and the bar looked amazing. I was seated next to the windows, which was nice because it gave us a nice view of the street. The food was good and the price for the food wasn't expensive. read more

Marshall Fields wonderful Walnut Room experience of childhood memories is no longer. I ordered the Thanksgiving cider turkey breast dinner which was was decent. Turkey was OK, stuffing and mash potatoes were quite good, green beans overcooked. The glass of Brut Rose was a tad warm although filled to the brim. Service was dismal. My server never circled back to inquire about the brut or the meal. Ambiance was meh. One fake tree in the main room, (insurance dictated I'm sure), lights hung only in the back windowed room. But always fun to see children dressed up. I had 2 more reservations, one in December and one in January, and after this experience, canceled both. I sound like a Grinch, so I'll temper with a compliment for eating during the non Holiday season. Their mandarin chicken salad is delicious, with dressing I'd like to buy in bulk. read more

Came in birthday of Muddy Waters for a blues tribute. It was my first time in such a renowned room. A room from a different era, when people shopped in person primarily, when people dressed up to go to the movies and fly on planes. I like the wood used in the room. It's beautiful wood like you'd find in and ole members only club. I got 2 drinks. Walnut old fashioned with Koval whiskey and a beer from off color. If I have one suggestion it would be they add more beer variety to the Walnut room. In walking to my table I see sign mentioning a wine bar. I'm not a oenophile. I like beer! Cocktails and sometimes cider. The musicians were great and it was fun evening! read more

I had one of the worst dining experiences I've ever had at the Walnut Room in Chicago. The food was genuinely inedible. I ordered the chicken pot pie and the Canadian cheese soup, and after one bite of the pot pie I was done -- it tasted like a frozen Marie Callender's dinner. The soup wasn't any better. To make things worse, our waiter ignored our table for over an hour. When we finally told him that the food was bad, his response was literally, "Yeah, it's horrible, idk." No apology, no attempt to fix the situation, not even a question about comping the untouched meals. It was unbelievably unprofessional. Between the awful food and the complete lack of service, this was the biggest waste of money. I wouldn't recommend this place to my worst enemy. read more
