The last visit there was pretty disappointing. My experience there has been very mixed-- unfortunately. It can be very good, with friendly service and hot food, but this last time our fries were served barely warm, and the replacements were grease laden. This is an unassuming little diner that you wouldn't expect to be so phenomenal. Our group of four came in just before noon on a Saturday and we didn't have to wait for a table. The menu has so many amazing options on it, it was difficult to choose. I went with the Cajun chicken biscuit covered in gravy with a side of potatoes. The potatoes were the star of the show, cooked beautifully. They were crispy and flavorful! The biscuit was great but the chicken was a little on the too crispy side. The gravy helps a lot - without it, the chicken may have seemed too dry. But overall the flavor was great and I couldn't stop eating it. I forgot what the others ordered, but everyone seemed really pleased with their choices. Our meal was incredibly affordable for what we ordered and service was attentive. While I was waiting on my food to be made, I overheard the "chef" complaining and cursing that we wanted something on the side, instead of on the sandwich. Really turned me off. Visited the Local Joint for the first time for brunch. Have to say I was quite impressed. I went with the biscuits and gravy with sausage patties on the side. I am a biscuits and gravy connoisseur and these were really good! In many places the gravy tastes like flour paste and could be reused to fill potholes in the streets. Not here! They're gravy had a delicious zesty flavor and the biscuits were soft and fluffy not like hockey pucks that you see at some "joints" (pun intended) The sausage patties were decent. Nothing special or unique but went with the biscuits and gravy quite well. Had a bite of my nephews pancakes which were quite good until the 4 year old took over syrup management... then it got a little sticky sweet. They do buy jelly from local hickory nut farms and somebody local sells them cakes. They charge downtown Asheville prices for a restaurant located in urban Fairview. Also be prepared to have 3% added to your bill if you pay with a debit or credit card. The names the only thing local. I recommend 5 Points located downtown Asheville. I'm saying A-OK because, as a group, we had a bad experience. The food wasn't bad, but getting the food was an issue. We had an hour scheduled for lunch & didn't get out for two hours. Saw many good reviews for the Local Joint. Yelp helped us find it on way to Lake Lure. It's hidden off the rode a bit. We came at a good time and were able to get a booth. Ten minutes later every table was full. Our server was pleasant and got us a couple waters and coffees in no time. On the menu I saw something called the Bear. It was a spicy fried chicken breast smothered in gravy on a biscuit. Not for a diet, but thought it would be different. Very disappointed. A thin over cooked chicken breast smothered in gravy on a very hard dried up biscuit. It also had no spice. My wife had a egg omelet with cheddar on a biscuit with bacon. Same hard "not fresh" biscuit w/ bacon. She also had a fruit cup that was not fresh. The eggs and bacon were ok. Again, staff was nice. Food was OK at best. read more

My wife and I have eaten here twice. Both times the food was really good! My wife's mother lives like 5 minutes away and over the last 8 years we have only eaten here twice, but after our breakfast this morning we decided we are going to eat here every time we visit! The gravy over their biscuits is ridiculously flipping amazing! The biscuits are just ok, but that gravy... holy crap it's good! My wife had the eggs Benedict and it was very good as well. We decided as we were eating that we might like to try some lunch food.... and so we ordered the blue cheese chips appetizers and it was an excellent decision! When the chips first arrived we were worried cause the looked dark and burnt, but upon inspection from our mouths we realized they were delicate and delightful! Then the blue cheese hits you on the back of the tongue and Kapauyaw! Great flavor and so smooth! We can't wait till our next visit! It will definitely be a regular spot for us from now on! I've only been once. But I was very impressed with the menu selection and the execution of my order. I had a Cuban sandwich, which was as good as Good as any I've had. The pork was flavorful and paired nicely with the ham, the mustard served on the side was wonderfully spicy and NOT yellow. The pickles on the side were obviously homemade (they still looked and tasted a little like cucumbers). It was obvious the folks working at TLJ know what they're doing. From the orderliness and cleanliness of the place to the thoughtful and varied menu to the quick and kind service, I'll give it 5 stars! Our server finally checked on our food and said the order did not print (blames it on the computer). She assured us our order was made a priority; however, other tables continued to get their food. The food was pretty good, not not anything awesome and they were small portions. Even though it was 2pm, I ordered off the breakfast menu! I got the poached eggs with mushrooms and goat cheese on English muffin. It was tasty for sure but I'd probably order another breakfast item next time! It came with grits and maybe I just don't know a lot about grits, but they were too buttery yet flavorless in my opinion. They were still good to help me fill up though! My dad ordered the 3 fish tacos but it was just one skinny piece of fish laid across 3 tortillas which I found almost humorous. My brother got the Cuban, which is what they're known for and wasn't wow-ed by it. Our server was very nice and this is a cool spot but not the very best food. read more

There's a lot going on with the decor. Lots to look at. At each booth there is a stool in the event you have a 3rd or 5th person. I love this idea! There was live music, a guitarist. He was talented and very fun to listen to. The bartenders/waitresses were so much fun- two ladies holding it down, engaging their customers, and telling funny stories. The vibe was great. Haven't been to Asheville since our honeymoon in 06. Found this place on yelp and headed over there for dinner. This place definitely lives up to the high star ratings it gets. We started off with the eggplant fries with chutney, I have never had eggplant this way and was blown away.....great starter. My main course was the fish tacos fish of the day was Mahi Mahi.....with corn tortillas, Pico, Lime,guacamole and of course black beans and rice I love fish tacos and there's are the best I've ever had 2 thumbs up.
