    Biscuit with Turkey Sausage Gravy
    Glenn W.

Great day for brunch today! Our server Michelle was very friendly and helpful. She recommended the Tacos Al Pastor Hash from their limited time menu, which I jumped on. It did not disappoint. 2 eggs over easy, potatoes, Al pastor pork, pineapple chunks, and cojita cheese! Highly recommended. My wife got the biscuit with turkey sausage gravy which was very good too. We both got the cheesy grits, which is about equal parts cheese and grits. All in all, the simple country charm, warm hospitality, and delicious food make this a great place to come for breakfast and brunch. Highly recommended and we will be back!

Ok so this isn't a "local" place, it's a chain, so one star off at the start. But hey, this is a good chain. The innovative cuisine is of high quality, and healthy choices abound. Vegetarians can eat well here and, importantly, have more than a couple options. Throw in a well-lit, comfortable atmosphere as well as service which has in my experience been consistently friendly and competent, and this place shines.

I think this breakfast place will be one to finally stick on the east side. We've had many breakfast spots come and go over there years. ( RIP Famous Toastery ) I think this one has what it takes. First Watch is a chain but almost don't mind that much since the food is so good. The few times we have gone the food did take a really long time to come out, over 45 min. I know lots of places are short staffed so we are happy to wait especially when they are slammed which has been every weekend. Shout out to all the brunch moms we saw bringing their kids out for breakfast. Yalls kids are cute. Joshua's notes: The menu is not over whelming They got the good stuff They give you a pot of coffee so you're not waiting on refills No adult beverages but those are coming soon Everyone is attentive in doing things Mandy's notes: Free upgrade to gluten free bread!! Sub anything out and it's no biggie Cozy booths Rotating seasonal menu Flair of Latin flavor for some dishes is appreciated There's outdoor and bar seating

Omgosh!! I absolutely love their food here!! I do not have one near me in PA. I have only been to one in FL. I am so happy I saw that NC had one. I had the Morning Market Veg. Absolutely delicious!! It comes with a side salad which most might find weird but I love it. Much healthier then potatoes. I didn't eat the toast (my husband did). My husband had the Waffle and thought it was ok, he's had better. The fresh brewed tea was great and the waitress gave me one to go without me asking. Love that! Especially with a 9 hour drive ahead of us. I definitely recommend this restaurant.

We came here for breakfast before departing Asheville because it was convenient to our hotel, in fact we were able to walk. My wife immediately loved the décor. It has a farmhouse, industrial feel. We also noticed it has a very cool folding window frame which allows indoor/outdoor seating at their bar area. We walked inside and were immediately greeted and seated because it was not yet very busy. The menu leans to healthy, fresh foods. I ordered "The Works" omelet with a few modifications. My wife chose the Tri-Fecta with blueberry pancake. Our orders arrived in a timely manner and looked great. We both enjoyed our meals and while we ate we noticed that some of the servers appeared to be training or talking and we learned they had only been open approximately one week! We enjoyed our meal and would recommend to others. We were also impressed with the pricing especially for a tourist town.

Brisket hash with a poached egg.

My dining companion and I each liked our choices okay, just okay, nothing special. My brisket hash was garnished with plenty of sweet peppers; the poached egg was way overcooked. Here's the weird thing: they serve *the most chlorinated water* ever. I mean, barely drinkable. My friend didn't like his coffee. I asked for cream for my decaf and it came in a kid-sized drinking glass, so that it dribbled onto the table every time I poured it. The noise level at Sunday brunch is insane. Conversation impossible. Probably won't go back.

Wow. This place is so good: everything on the menu was calling my name. I was only in Asheville for 24 hours, otherwise I would have gone back for a second time. The food and beverages were top notch and done quickly. They are opened for breakfast and lunch, so keep that in mind when visiting. My only complaint is going to the front to pay. Huge line, would have been nice to pay at the table.

This restaurant is fairly new to Asheville. It's been open about a year although I was told they're planning to open the second one within a year. The interior is really lovely an elevated industrial look. The ceilings are very high. The piping is visible, but extremely pretty. The whole room has a lot of light window, seats by the windows and a lovely bar area that opens up completely so that you're literally feeling the breeze from outside. They also have a completely covered side porch, which makes eating with kids and in good weather really nice. I ordered a special as it was there for a limited time. It was delicious. I enjoyed it. It was a brisket scramble. I really wish they had been more brisket. Lol the scramble was delicious. The restaurant is really charming. The food excellent and the ambience even better. Please give this restaurant a try if you're in the Asheville area. I intend to return, and I'm already thinking about the carrot cake pancakes

Yes, that's an omelet with a SALAD. WTF?!
    Steve S.

This is a "C" restaurant. I've eaten at a dozen First Watch locations around the U.S.; this one isn't among the best. The food is OK, the service is slightly below average, and it's LOUD. Open kitchen, lots of hard surfaces...I suggest bringing noise-cancelling headphones and something to listen to. I asked my server what the omelets come with; he replied "mixed greens". For breakfast. He did offer potatoes and fresh fruit as alternatives, but I declined, half-wanting to witness a breakfast salad. To my surprise, it also came with toast, which I was unaware of. See attached pic. Overall, breakfast places in Asheville make me want to stay home and eat.

    Florentine Eggs Benedict
    Tori E.

My friend and I came here with our two sons for a quick stop to eat before our visit at the Biltmore. We were seated at 10:30 AM and did not receive all of our food until 11:55AM. They were busy, yes, but our server never came back to check on us the whole time. We stopped her as she passed by us to see how long our food was going to be because we had to leave for the Biltmore in 5 minutes. She said they were very busy, but she would check on it for us. At this point, if our food wasn't cooked yet, we wanted to leave so we weren't late for our ticket to get into the Biltmore, but when she came back she said our food was second in line to go out in the kitchen and just walked off. So, we didn't even have a chance to let her know we wanted to leave and to forget our order! At that point, we should have left, but we stuck around hoping the food would be delivered soon. It wasn't. It took 15 more minutes for us to get our food after that. By the time all three meals were delivered to our table, our server looked at me and noticed I didn't have my meal. She then said "Did I miss your order?" and when I told her I ordered the Florentine Eggs Benedict, she just left without a word. I assumed she just left my plate at the kitchen window, but no, it took another 10 mins for my plate to be delivered in the most sloppy presentation possible. Clearly, SHE FORGOT MY ORDER! So, now everyone else had finished their plates quickly and I had one minute to eat mine before we left. I cut open my eggs Benedict and my egg was the furthest thing ever from poached. The yolk was overcooked and the whole plate was drenched in hollandaise sauce. The potatoes were burnt and everything lacked seasoning. You could easily tell our server had forgotten my order, went back to the kitchen, told them to make it on the fly and whoever made it, just did a very quick and careless job. I took two bites and left it as it was. She came back to the table and didn't ask how our food was, just dropped off our checks. I expected mine to be comped because of her incompetence, but no, it wasn't. This was unacceptable but I did not have time to speak to a manager or her anymore and just paid my bill. We were clearly late to our appointment at the Biltmore now. Look, I understand if you forget to put in an order. I've been there. I am a seasoned server myself of over 15 years. It happens! My thing is... This whole awful experience could have been avoided. She knew we were in a hurry & she didn't care about that. What she should've done was give us a clear time of when to expect our meal. What she should've done was wait to hear our response to when our meal was expected to be delivered. What she should've done was listened to us instead of her rushing our order in the kitchen, so we could kindly leave. What she should've done was taken responsibility for forgetting to put in my order & apologized. What she should have done was comp my meal because of she forgot to put it in, knew it inconvenient for me at the time and also because of the fact that it was an awful plate of food. Had she done any of those things, our whole experience here would have been vastly different. This is a classic example of why good service matters in every dining establishment. Train your servers to do the right thing, so no matter what mistake comes their way, your customers are still left with a forgiving experience and may come back again.

This was a neat spot and they had great service. I had the ham omelet and it was delicious

Cracker Barrel would have been a step up. Haven't been to this hipster, that has turned into more of a tourist trap breakfast cafe in years and probably won't go back anytime soon. I found Chestnut on Yelp and decided to wander in. The space has this elevated modern rustic vibe with a southern twist and a little bit of sass. They even sell shirts that say neither hoity nor toity, which cracked me up. Honestly, the atmosphere was great, but our waitress was the real star. She was absolutely phenomenal and looked after us perfectly. My palate was pretty fried, so I started with a Bloody Mary to wake up. Truth be told, it was just okay. The house mix had an odd flavor that nobody at the table could quite identify, and it seriously lacked spice. It was just kinda bland. I noticed a bottle of Firewalker hot sauce on the table, and splashing that in helped a little bit. After that, I transitioned to a mimosa. You really cannot mess up a mimosa too much, and it was a solid, reliable second drink. For the main event, I ordered the southern chicken and waffles. This came with a fried chicken breast sitting on golden malted waffles, smothered in sausage gravy, and drizzled with chipotle honey. It was a really great dish. The kitchen did a solid job with the fry on the chicken, and the gravy had a nice flavor. It leaned a little on the sweet side because of the honey, but it was not totally overdone. The real sleeper hit of the morning, though, was the side of cheesy grits. Those grits were absolute heaven. They were incredibly creamy and perfectly seasoned. If you go, you have to order them. Chestnut is in a great location, and despite the weak Bloody Mary, it was a stellar visit.

Worth Planning Your Asheville Trip Around…read more As a Bay Area foodie, navigating around San Francisco's incredible restaurant scene taught me to appreciate thoughtful cooking, quality ingredients, and genuine hospitality. Chestnut had been on my Asheville dining list long before I arrived, and after spending several days exploring Boone, Blowing Rock, and the Blue Ridge Mountains, I made it my dinner splurge before heading home. It absolutely delivered. A quick tip: skip the hunt for street parking and head straight to the garage across the street. The first hour is free, and downtown Asheville can be congested with both vehicle and foot traffic. I arrived around 5:30 without a reservation and was warmly greeted by the hostess, who offered me a table or a seat at the bar. Asheville was surprisingly hot and humid compared to the cool mountain weather I'd been enjoying, so the air-conditioned dining room was an easy choice over the sidewalk patio. The restaurant itself is beautiful. Fresh flowers, warm lighting, elegant stone countertops, comfortable booths, tables, and bar seating create an atmosphere that feels polished without being stuffy. What stood out most was the mix of guests. There were locals greeting staff by name, couples enjoying date night, families with children, and older guests gathering with friends. It felt welcoming and comfortable for everyone. As a solo diner, the bar was the perfect choice. I enjoyed all the energy of the restaurant while still having a peaceful dining experience. I started with a glass of Brut Rosé from Spain. Crisp, refreshing, and beautifully balanced, it was the perfect way to settle in after a warm afternoon. Then came the Lobster Bisque. As someone who has made lobster bisque from scratch, I know the work that goes into creating a great one. Chestnut's version, made with Oak & Grist Reserve Cream and finished with fresh chives, was outstanding. Rich, silky, velvety, and loaded with tender pieces of lobster. If I'm being incredibly picky, I would have enjoyed just a touch more sherry, but that's purely personal preference. The smaller serving vessel kept the bisque hot from first spoonful to last, which I appreciated. My only complaint was that I wanted a larger serving because it was that good. For my entrée, I ordered the 4-ounce Petite Filet. The steak arrived cooked a perfect medium rare with excellent flavor and texture. It was served with butter-whipped mashed potatoes, haricot verts, a crisp potato gaufrette, red wine demi-glace, and chive butter. Every component was thoughtfully prepared. The demi-glace added richness without overwhelming the beef, while the potato gaufrette provided a delicate crunch. My only minor critique was that the plate could have been served a bit hotter, but the quality of the food more than made up for it. One of the highlights of the evening was the service. Taylor, part of the management team, was personable, knowledgeable, and genuinely welcoming. After my sparkling wine, he suggested a half-glass pour of Willamette Valley Pinot Noir since I was driving. Excellent recommendation. The wine was elegant, earthy, and beautifully balanced, pairing perfectly with the filet. As the evening progressed, the restaurant filled quickly. Watching the staff greet regulars by name and efficiently manage the growing crowd spoke volumes about how well-run the restaurant is. You could tell many guests were repeat customers, which is always a good sign. After dinner, I attempted to walk off my meal through downtown Asheville, but the summer heat quickly convinced me to head back to my hotel. I left full, happy, and already thinking about that lobster bisque. For a Bay Area foodie who plans entire trips around memorable meals, Chestnut exceeded expectations. Great food, thoughtful service, an inviting atmosphere, and a dining experience that felt special without trying too hard. If you're visiting Asheville, put Chestnut on your list. Life is too short for mediocre meals, and this one is worth making time for.
