Hot Fish was one of my favorite food stops in Asheville. I had the shrimp burger, and it was absolutely amazing. The shrimp was perfectly seasoned, the flavors came together beautifully, and the whole thing was so good it put me straight into a food coma. I will definitely be back the next time I'm in Asheville!
Excellent flounder nuggets crispy on the outside moist within for a perfect bite. People working here were incredibly friendly and welcoming this afternoon. 5 star lunch ......
I stopped in for lunch. It's a small place with no traditional tables inside, just counter seating and seats along the wall. We were given menus, then told to order at the register. We ended up sitting outside, and when the food was ready, the person who took our order brought it out to us. I had the fish sandwich with fries, and my friend had the fish with potato salad and boiled peanuts. I really liked my fish sandwich. It was served simply on white bread with tartar sauce, and it was messy in the best way. I managed the first few bites as a sandwich, but eventually had to finish it with a fork and knife. The fries were also very good. The potato salad was not really for me. I wanted to like it, but every time I took a bite, I kept thinking there was something about it I didn't like. I think it may have had too much pickle juice. On the other hand, I had never tried boiled peanuts before, so I had nothing to compare them to, but I really enjoyed them. Overall, this was a good, casual lunch spot. The fish sandwich and fries were the highlights for me, and I'd go back for those.
The decor is really cool. Lots of photos of black tv shows and magazine covers from back in the day. It's clearly a very popular spot since there were a lot of customers. The staff were kind and friendly. We ordered the fish plate with fries, pickles, hush puppies, spinach and fried fish. The fish was super crispy so I loved the texture but everything was just super salty. Hush puppies also has a nice flavor.
Died and went to foodie heaven. 6his place is a throwback inbtime...so nostalgic. Ok lets get to it...the food, well I could have sworn my grandmother was in the kitchen with the blackened trout, mac and cheese, coupled with collards and kale mixed greens with smoked turkey. I felt like a kid in the candy store. The staff were friendly and welcoming. The youngblady who took the order with a smile that said, do you have any idea of the gastronomic delight you are about to enjoy. The ambiance was small town diner style eating...family friendly....if and when you make your way to Ashville this is a place that should be on your bucket list....DONT FORGET TO GET THE COOKBOOK
Top Chef Alum and James Beard Finalist Ashleigh Shanti has it down. We stopped here after a long morning at The Biltmore even though our four year old refused to go. Immediately he felt at home because everyone was so friendly. They had coloring sheets and crayons which he is all about and they even had him help hang it on the door. We ordered the cabbage pancake and the rainbow trout platter with Mac and cheese and tornado fries. It was a lot of food. I'm more sad I didn't add greens because they looked solid. The rainbow trout was perfectly breaded and cooked. The Mac and cheese is broiled on the oven for that perfect slightly burnt top. I watched them make each item fresh including the fries which is a bonus. Housemade sweet tea was the perfect southern tea. They were playing 90s R&B like Destiny's Child and Mariah Carey and even our own Houston girl Megan Thee Stallion. It was a good time. Highly recommend.
Not every establishment lives up to their name....literally! But... GOOD HOT FISH does! The breaded/fried catfish was finger-lickin good. Tender and flaky on the inside... steam was coming out of my fish the whole time i was eating it. My friend had the catfish nuggets and loved them as much. Not to minimize the sides....because they were equally good... but my focus remained on the fish. Friendly service and I love the magazine covers all over and I felt like a true Beauty of the Week after I left the bathroom :) They know exactly what they're doing and they are who they think they are!
I took a vacation to relax and I kept hearing good reviews about this establishment. Luckily, this was in walking distance. After seeing the many reviews and content I saw, I knew I had to stop by! There wasn't a wait, but was greeted and placed my order in no time! Although they appeared busy, it didn't take long to receive my order. I ordered the catfish, Mac and cheese, and collard greens. I was upset it was just one piece of fish, but I was over it after 5 seconds, EVERYTHING was amazing! The Mac and cheese was perfect and I normally don't eat everyone's collard greens, but these were perfect!!! I would definitely recommend everyone to come and eat here! I can tell that others enjoyed their meals, it was quiet and people were scraping plates.
This place is the truth - loved the freshness of the fried fish. You don't find this just anywhere! Got the boiled peanuts and the blooming onion too. Essential easy stop in Asheville - really enjoyed sitting at the counter. We left full and happy. Cool vibe, great service, and a spot we will keep in the rotation for Asheville visits.
Stopped in for lunch on a trip to Asheville and had a good experience. Ordering at the counter was easy, got our number, grabbed seats outside and in about 10 minutes, had some good hot fish. I had the basic sandwich which had crispy catfish, tartar sauce on good squishy white bread. One nice touch was the bread being griddled with that side facing in on the fish. Led to a nice little crunch. It got fairly messy so finished it up knife and fork style. The shrimp burger had a flavor neither of us were a fan of and it kind of overwhelmed the shrimp. We also split the salad which was two big hunks of iceberg with a nice amount of, funky in a good way, dressing with hints of anchovy and dill. Lots of crunchy bits were scattered on it too for a textural contrast. Would come back anytime for the sandwich and to try other menu items.

We ordered the fried fish sandwich, seafood dip, oysters , greens and twisted fries. The homemade crackers for the dip were rich savory and crisp. They paired perfectly with the seafood dip; radishes and carrots were also provided. Now the dip was a little spicy but worth it. The oysters and fish were seasoned perfectly along with the hush puppies . The greens and fries were also hot and fresh. We loved sitting under the umbrella people watching while eating. Everything was excellent. Oh wait the bathroom. I'm mad i forgot to take pictures. As soon as i walked in, it reminded me of my youth, remembering every time my mom Jet magazine came my sisters and I looked for the Jet Beauty of the week thinking we were going to make the page one day. The bathroom was too cute.
Fish sandwich is STACKED with crunchy, juicy fish. Generous smear of tartar sauce on buttered bread, and even better when dipped in hot sauce! I can see why Good Hot Fish has made a name for themselves. Their breading is thin yet packed full of flavor, there's a crisp bite to the fish when you eat it yet nothing tastes/feels dried out/overly cooked. And, for $20, I know some people think that it's on the pricey side, but it's a steal for me because I could pay the same price for that at home and get two things, dry, pieces of fish in between regular white bread. So, I actually think that the price of the sandwich is fair for the value. The restaurant sits atop a set of stairs, right next to Burial diatillery. Seating is extremely limited as their restaurant is small, but service is quick and super friendly!
The menu is small, but it's executed perfectly. The fish nuggets were hot and fresh. Seasoned well with a light batter. Didn't even need sauce. Obviously, you must order fish here, but don't sleep on the sweet potato cabbage pancake. It's like a remix okonomiyaki, and is one of the best things I ate this year. Small counter seating inside as well as a patio. Vibes and service are top notch. GHF is a must when in AVL.
This is a counter service fish fry restaurant. Minimal seating inside, some patio seating, we were able to walk from downtown. Nostalgia driven decor paying homage to the Chef and her heritage. Friendly staff that were quick to greet and offer assistance. I will admit to not liking fish, but being a fan of the Chef, knowing that I wanted to try her food, I was happy with the shrimp burger. The side alone can make a memorable meal, and there were multiple other sides we wanted to try, but didn't have the room. An excuse to visit and try the food again in the future! read more
I did some research and found out about Good Hot Fish. I ordered the fish sandwich, greens and potato salad. They were delicious. The staff is incredible. I was warmly greeted and they even found me to bring my to-go order. I will definitely return. read more

Ohhhh my goodness, this place is legendary. It's a bit pricey, but worth it. Fish Sandwich: MM-MM-MM!! SO delicious. I dream about this fish sandwich. I want to have another one so badly. The fish was perfectly seasoned, so tender, so crispy. The tartar sauce is incredible. This is probably the best fish sandwich I've had. Fish Platter: We got blackened catfish, red peas, and mac & cheese. It came with two hush puppies. The blackened catfish is amazing. The mac and cheese is also amazing and made with care. The red peas are very impressive. There is seating both inside and out, but it's a bit limited during the lunchtime rush. read more

Super friendly service-greeted like a regular as soon as I walked in the door! Delicious breaded catfish and fries-very flavorful and not at all greasy, melt in your mouth, steaming mac and cheese, perfectly seasoned hush puppies and pickles...just outstanding flavors all around! Nice selection of $3 canned beers Great music playing, fun photos throughout the shop. This place is an absolute gem I'll be in downtown Asheville every weekend in February and cannot wait to come back read more
What a fun place to go! It was crowded, so this place is doing something right. My order was a hot fish sandwich & we shared a few sides. Those sides were potato salad, collard greens, & Mac & cheese. My sandwich came with a couple of breaded catfish fillets. They were coated & fried beautifully & delicately. Lots of corn meal & not oily. It was very good. As for the sides, the collard greens were amazingly tasty! The potato salad & Mac & cheese were just average. Good hot fish is a fun place to try. This place is one of the best fish restaurants I've eaten in in a long time. It's on the south slope and has a cool vibe. The catfish that is cornmeal battered is absolutely delicious. The flounder fish bites were out of this world. A lot like a English fish and chip. The collard greens were some of the best greens I've had in Asheville. The fries were fabulous and were a thick cut curly tight fry. I'll definitely be going back to this place. The staff are very friendly and we got our meal and just a few minutes. Seating is a little limited so come just before the noon hour. Spectacular taste! read more
We again tried Good Hot Fish before heading to a show at Asheville Yards. This time I had the shrimp burger which had an almost curry flavor with perfectly prepared potato salad. My husband had the fish nuggets which come with 2 dips. He also had the mac & cheese and that was the star of the meal! There is very little room to sit inside so we had our meal at Burial's picnic tables. We also ordered it online and just picked it up. It was ready in about 25 minutes. read more

Wonderful counter staff. My daughter got the fresh fish platter with trout & it was picture perfect and a generous portion. She's a mac & cheese fan and the taste I had was delicious- though it's not a side dish I would typically choose. My shrimp-burger was delicious and not all breading. Fall apart goodness. Twister fries were well seasoned but too fat for my preference. Nice time to sit outside- we went at 4:30, but can't IMAGINE how crowded it must be at peak hours. Will definitely return. I have followed this owner/ chef through her many competitions & she has done a great job here. read more
Fried fish joints can be tricky because everything has to be on point-the seasoning, breading, type of fish, etc. Happy to report that Good Hot Fish hit the mark! I got the fishticks with fries and it more than filled me up. The thick cuts of fish were nicely breaded and seasoned. The fries were hot, crispy, and seasoned well, maybe had some Old Bay on them. The tartar, cap n crik, and hot sauces were all really good and perfect accompaniment to the fish. My friends had the sides with their fish plates, Mac and cheese and greens. Highly recommend both of these as well. The greens had a little bit of sweet to them but not overly sweet. The Mac and cheese had the right amount of cheese and was baked perfectly. The cashier was very friendly and gave good recommendations. She also threw in a bag of pork rinds-love the hospitality! Small seating area inside with some stools and a nice deck outside. I would love to visit and sit outside when the weather is nice. The decor on the inside is very cool and homey. Jet Magazine covers on the counter, family pics, signs. R&B music over the speakers. Definitely stirred up some nostalgia as my grandparents fished and ate it fried on the regular. Bring your appetite when you come! read more
If you really love your tastebuds, prove it to them with a trip to Good Hot Fish. Seafood and sides full of soul, flavor, and heat if you want it (you do). The quaint spot in the South Slope area is a perfect place to sit and have those tastebuds blown by the red eye peas (you must order these as a side) before you go on your brewery crawl or you go play some games at Well Played. It can get crowded, but so what, the food is great. The service is friendly and helpful if you need any help deciding what to order (I'll help too - get the peas!) Your tastebuds are going to love you back. read more

Good Hot Fish had long been on my list of places to visit in Asheville & when I finally made it in this past weekend, it did not disappoint. Cute, quaint & full of all the cultural ephemera that those of us who took over for the 99 & 00s (IFYKYK) remember from our childhoods, Good Hot Fish exudes the intimate, communal vibes associated with your best neighborhood fish spot. Friendly staff, enjoyable view of the kitchen as they engage in culinary art while you eat, & a nice selection of sides, sauces, & accoutrements to round out the star of the show: your selected seafood. Mine was fried catfish--flavorfully seasoned, perfectly breaded & crisp, and delightful enough that I absolutely could've eaten a second piece. Admittedly, I was skeptical about the buttermilk tartar sauce--I was quickly converted though & found myself dunking my fries in it, lol. I do hope there's a day where all of this AMAZINGNESS exists in a larger location. Until then though, I'd definitely pack in with others for another piece of...you guessed it...GOOD hot fish! read more

Being there felt warm--familiar--like spending the weekend at your cousin's house. I'm only in town for a short time, but I'm already planning my return before I leave. Because sheesh... this fish? After seeing Chef Ashleigh Shanti on multiple cooking shows, we knew we had to make a stop when we came to town. The service was great and friendly, the shop is nostalgic and fun, and the food was phenomenal. I am not personally a fan of fish sandwiches, but when I tell you this fish sandwich made me fall in love, I mean it! The krab fries were also very unique and delicious. I wish I lived in town so I could go back! read more

I didn't realize visiting Asheville would come with so many amazing meals. Good Hot Fish being on top of that list. The menu is simple not flashy and I think that really appealed to me. It felt like home cooking. The service was quick and very friendly as well. The fish sandwich was thick! They really stack the fish and it was so juicy as well. I'm not always a fan of catfish, I guess it depends on how it's prepared, but this sandwich was so good! For sides we had Mac n cheese and I think it was the best Mac n cheese I've had (at least in a long time). The hush puppies were exactly what I needed after a long flight. Crispy and moist and full of flavor. Next time I'm in NC I will be back! read more

Fish and fries were delicious. The breading was not too heavy and fish was perfectly cooked. Portions are small (especially for the price). Seating is very limited so you may want to get food to go. read more

I have been to Good Hot Fish numerous times and the food is consistently excellent. I have eaten the Trout, Catfish and various Fish specials all blackened perfectly. The picture shows my most recent visit - Blackened Fish special with peas, stewed greens and their customary homemade pickles , awesome hush puppies and homemade tartar sauce. The price was $27+tip. Great staff enthusiastic about the awesome food they serve. If you're visiting Asheville put this on your lunch list. Make sure you check their hours. Top Chef contestant and James Beard nominee chef, but that's only one reason to come. Awesome southern food and fun beer selection. Only open until 7pm so get in early. It's a little pricey, but worth it. The seating area is small but good tunes and vibe! read more
