The inside of the restaurant.

This was my first time to try this restaurant. I've seen it as I drive-by and finally decided to stop and give it a try. My server was very polite. The ambience is very average. Just a nice little place to go in and get some food, while dressing casually. The food is fairly expensive and I must say just basic in terms of flavor. I started with an appetizer brussels sprouts. The seasoning on the brussels sprouts was very nice. The portion was good, however, I left 3 to 4 brussels sprouts as they were undercooked and just too hard to eat. I personally don't like to pay for something I'm not able to eat. I tried a Caesar salad, as my entrée. The dressing was just okay. The lettuce was a bit tough. I did not finish the salad I have to say I was not thrilled. My waitress told me they seem to be known more for their burgers so if I ever decide to give this a second try, I think I'll stick with the burger.

Let me paint you a picture: You've found a bar that pours liquid gold into glasses, serves wings that could make a vegetarian question their life choices, and offers burgers so good they'd make your ex text you "u up?" at 2am... and the place is EMPTY? Cue Bill Burr voice What in the holy hell is wrong with people?! The Case 4 South Paw's CriminalUnderappreciation * Drinks: Dave's out here mixing cocktails like he's solving the damn Da Vinci Code. Pre-prohibition drinks? More like post-common-sense, because clearly the universe forgot to send the memo about this place * Food: Their kitchen's putting out wings crispier than a billionaire's shirt collar and smash burgers that'll make you want to slap your mama (don't actually slap your mama) * Vibe: Dan the owner's basically the human equivalent of a "Cheers" episode - except instead of Norm, you get risotto so creamy it should come with a cigarette afterward Why Isn't There a Line Around the Block? Let's explore theories: People think "great cocktails + reasonable prices" is a government psyop The "empty bar" aesthetic is actually performance art about modern loneliness Customers keep getting trapped in flavor comas after the third round Maybe we're all too busy taking selfies with overpriced toilet water at "concept bars" that serve drinks in lightbulbs. Meanwhile, South Paw's over here doing the revolutionary concept of... ACTUALLY BEING GOOD AT STUFF. Do humanity a solid - go drink their booze, eat their food, and help solve this mystery that's making raccoons look smart by comparison. Your liver and Instagram followers will thank you.

We made an online reservation for South Paw AVL on a Friday evening for 6:45 pm. We arrived at 6:40 and were seated immediately, without giving our name because the restaurant was more than half empty, so a reservation was not needed. The ambiance was quiet and relaxing. We were seated far enough away from other diners so there was minimal interference to our conversations. The overhead lights were dim, and each table was decorated with little candles that had dancing flames. The walls and artwork was subdued, giving a "romantic" or "upscale" feel to the establishment. This would be the perfect place to bring a date for a nice meal, or maybe an anniversary dinner. They even provided black cloth napkins opposed to disposable ones. We ordered everything (drinks, appetizer and entrees) by 6:50. We opted for the pork belly and apples as an appetizer, which arrived to the table at 7:25 (35 minutes after ordering). The Pork Belly arrived as two really nice seared pieces of Pork, accompanied by a salad (that consisted of apples, shaved brussel sprouts, and fennel; topped with a light honey-flavored sauce, with Sherry vinegar and a little bit of cinnamon). Both the pork belly and salad was really tasty by itself, but mixed together set it off on another level. Each bite was an explosion of flavor for the taste buds. Entres arrived to the table at 7:40, almost an hour after ordering. My husband ordered the Brick Roasted Chicken, which came with some mixed vegetables and fingerling potatoes and a nice pan reduction sauce. The meal was well prepared, but his only complaint was that there wasn't enough seasoning on the meal. It was bland, and took the table salt & pepper to make it acceptable. Other than that, the entree was nicely presented. I ordered the French dip with a side of homemade shoestring french fries. The au jus sauce was well prepared, and they included a creamy horseradish sauce that complimented the sandwich deliciously. The bread (I think it was a French hoagie) was perfectly toasted and the meat was proportionally shredded and high quality (it wasn't some cheap cut). The shoestring potatoes were definitely made in our house and arrived to the table crispy with delightful flavor. I think they double fried them, and it was tough to decide which I liked better; the French Dip or the Fries. Both were equally delectable. Both my husband and I visited the restroom facilities and they were clean and well maintained. Something about a dirty bathroom makes me cringe in restaurants, but thankfully, there was no cringing here. The service was awfully slow, but our server did check on us an appropriate amount of times. It wasn't overbearing to the point of interrupting our conversations, but it wasn't so little where we were left twiddling our thumbs waiting for a water refill. It did take forever for anything we ordered to get to our table. Even the side of ranch I asked for to dip my fries in took 15 minutes to get to me. I was half way done with my fries before I got the dipping sauce. When the bill came, I was sticker shocked, but in the BEST WAY POSSIBLE! Usually whenever we go out to eat, we drop a minimum of $75. We hit up Jack In The Box in Seattle to feed our family of 4, and dropped $75. Anytime we order pizza delivery, with tip and delivery fees, it's $75. Go out to eat with our family of 4 to a Mexican Restaurant? $100+. Date nights with just me and my husband? $100. So when the bill came to the table, and it was only $48 for 2 meals, an appetizer and a seltzer water... I had to do a doubletake. Because I thought for sure that they missed something. Nope, it was just a reasonably affordable restaurant, for once. I haven't left a restaurant feeling this happy in... Honestly... I can't remember. Aside from the super slow service and somewhat bland Brick Roasted Chicken, everything was, hands down, 5 stars (out of 5 stars). Service is a 7/10. But Ambiance, Cleanliness, Price, Food & Atmosphere are all 10/10. Would highly recommend this establishment to others and we will, without a doubt, be back.

I don't know what prompted tonight's surprise dinner date with my husband at South Paw AVL, but it was a delightful discovery. We dove into our dishes too quickly to be able to photograph them. We enjoyed a delicious Brussel sprouts appetizer and shared Scallops Entree on a yummy bed risotto, and the Pasta Beurre Blanc with grilled salmon. We skipped the dessert tonight, but probably won't the next time we visit.

OK, kids! New later night eatery in South AVL area that you need to try!! This building has been many things that never seemed to find their groove. I'm hoping we have the new winner venue that will be around for a while. Service and food were spot on! I had the Bad Boy burger and I couldn't have been happier. From roll to fries, it was delish. Pernicious Hazy was a great pairing for this holiday weekend burger. Staff, both front and BOH, were friendly and welcoming. I'll share pics of menu. Full bar plus beer and wine. Dave the bartender is itching to serve up tasty cocktails. I know what I'm having the next time - Dave's a fellow NYer and says he makes a mean LI Iced tea..... we shall see! They are open at 4pm so you can have your Biscuit Head for breakfast and burn it all off before returning for dinner. You will be happy!

Yummy food, friendly service, and great portions for the price. I got the ribeye and it was delicious. The double burger was great too.

Food is over priced for what you get. Not that great of food to begin with. Plus the wait staff seem very confused.

We walked in without a reservation, sat down, and had the kind of long, unhurried dinner that feels increasingly rare. Nobody rushed us. They let us share plates without hesitation. The menu is billed as New American, and that's the right phrase for it -- genuinely eclectic, pulling from Spanish, French bistro, and Southern influences without committing to any one of them. The pork chop was excellent. The grilled carrots were genuinely memorable. The green salad was simple and well done. Our waiter recommended a wine that we were pleased with, and even offered a tasting. The wine list is deep for a room this size, and the cocktail list looks the same. Music was at that sweet-spot volume where you can hear your conversation partner and still hear the song. You could bring your parents, or come on a date, it works either way. Some farm-to-table places feel pretentious; this one doesn't. They don't make you feel dumb for not knowing every local distributor. One small gripe: a 3% "kitchen staff fee" printed on the back of the menu. I'm all for paying the kitchen, but I'd rather see it built into the prices up front. 4.7 Stars. What would push it to a solid five stars: drop the hidden fee and bake it into the menu prices. That's genuinely the only thing standing between this and a perfect night out.

Our server was rather chatty but incredibly kind and attentive. About the same price range as other…read moreupper scale/casual spots in Asheville. Big portions help justify the price. Local ingredients and really good food. A nutty amuse bouche to start the night. Beets and pickled apples were interesting in a good way. Cheddar onion rye sourdough was adequately sour and warm, on the dense side. Trout was super moist and the mustard sauce complimented it very well. One of the better fish dishes I've had in NC. Also tried some of the pork chop (very tender & great sauce) and mushroom risotto (herby and great flavors on the mushrooms).
