Me and my amazing boyfriend Ben absolutely love it here! It has a great ambience for us to enjoy as we stare into each other's eyes and intertwine our souls. I love when there is dogs in the bar as me and my adoring partner have cats and it gives a nice look into what being a dog owner is like. The food is immaculate I love eating the hot dogs right out door. We also love that we can smoke in the bar and regularly pass share a cigarette by nose to mouth exchanges. I've been a regular at the double crown for about a year now. However tonight was unusually unpleasant when the bouncer pulled me out of the bath room and accused me of being a Nazi (I'm a 6'1 African American male) the entire reason for this was due to a conversation I had with 3 females I approached them and spoke with them they began to show that they were not interested in what I had to say so I walked off and placed my hand over my heart and waved. I guess one of them got offended and told the bouncer I was hailing Hitler.. The bouncer then came to me as I was walking out of the restroom and yanked my arm up intending to fight me and told me I had to go I politely ask to close my tab and he would not let me so I was charged for that. My recommendation for anyone visiting the double crown is to not. The establishment is rooted in racism.. they made that very clear tonight because three while females attacked a black man because he wasn't interested in pursuing them because they brushed him off. Anyways Asheville is better than this establishment and it hurts to see such a place like this in our city. read more

Quick visit to Asheville. This place has a very punk rock vibe. A woman was here with a dog on the bar. $6 pbr & a shot. LGBTQ friendly. had a very worn in vibe. When we walked in. They asked if we had a 'membership' did a quick scan of my ID. Entered my phone number and then had us write our names in a spiral bound notebook. not sure what that was about. I really wish I had spent more time here instead of tooling around downtown. Locals recommended this to me after I asked if there wasn't a place without basic bachelorette parties and tourists from even smaller towns than this who refuse to clap for live music. I arrived with new friends on my last night in the city for one last round. It was karaoke night, this one girl blew everyone away with a loud, thundering version of a song from a musical that's usually sappy and slow. Everyone cheered and stomped like hell. PBR was cheap and cold. Even on a school night the place was packed. It was filthy, the couch in the back had a serious funk that even attached itself to the nearby cardboard coasters. The yellow booth in the back was covered in liquid. Saw some dogs and hipsters. Nice seating/smoking area to the side with tables and some fun graffiti to read. Heard this is the only place to find Cameron & Ross's Titty Creatures, so be on the lookout! read more

The Double Crown quickly became my favorite spot in West Asheville (and thus all of Asheville, because I basically never left WAVL). This feels like a proper dive bar. There is a bar, there are booths, there are couches, there is a patio. Pool tables, an appropriate amount of bathroom graffiti and fliers. You cannot come here without chatting with a few strangers, but if you just want to do your thing it's easy to extricate yourself. If you don't extricate yourself you'll probably make a new friend. And if you don't feel like talking to people, you're still in luck, because there are probably several dogs to hang out with. Sign in as a guest. They have the least friendly bartenders I encountered in Asheville, but I wasn't a member. Maybe they get friendlier. They weren't rude; they served me drinks. That's all I want, really. Maybe they could tell I was a little overwhelmed by the friendliness of the south. Drinks are cheap. If you stay late enough it turns into a party. read more

I checked out Double Crown for the first time last night. The atmosphere is cool and very punk rock. Bartender was friendly and attentive. I got the Happy Cola drink and was not too impressed with it. It was very bitter and not what I expected. My friend got the Double Trouble Margarita and unfortunately it just wasn't great. Also there were two dogs running around the bar the whole time. I'm a huge dog lover but the excessive barking was a bit annoying. The Double Crown will always be my favorite dive bar on this side of town. Or probably ever. Cheap beer, great drinks, and karaoke Sunday's are the way to my heart! I'll fight through any crowd of 21 year olds in a grunge phase for this place. No parking lot, but loads of free street parking, or you can park in the lumber yard across the street and test your luck! If you like tacky lights and decor and vintage pictures of Dolly this place will have you hooked. I could go on for days but if you've got an open mind and $1 to buy a membership you should definitely check this place out! The only place I know of in town to buy a pint of Narragansett lager and it's worth it. read more

I freaking love this bar. The drinks are good. But the atmosphere is what win me here, some might call it divey but I think it's wonderfully cozy. The night I was there the DJ was killing it. I mean if I ever need a DJ he would be the guy I picked. He smoothly transitioned from a large selection of classic soul and blues at a conversation volume level. This is a fantastic hang out and chill bar. I don't feel judged like I have to dress in my fancy pants or emit heavy hipster vibes. It's just chill. The lighting is mostly red, in a naughty but fun way. The black and white checked flooring looks like it came out of and old 50's diner. Bartenders were all nice. Drinks are priced right not obscenely unlike some places around town. This may be my new Saturday night gig. read more

Great dive bar with interesting people and an impressive liquor selection. This place was the first time during my entire vacation that I had liquor, which was funny because here in Jax that's usually what I have. They have upscale pours and affordable pricing. I didn't know serving liquor was under restriction on NC, our maybe it's just Asheville, but according to someone that works there they have to continue to show good standing in customer flow and they even have a membership card so they can show the city "hey people want us here!" Go figure. I love the decor of all the different photos on the walls, plush seating and fun furniture throughout. The outside patio was nice and had a prefect view of their rebel wall, filled with messages from patrons throughout time. Definitely a must-see if you're visiting. read more

Was recommended by a fellow foodie that cautioned us not to get dissuaded by the initial dive bar impression. Server at the Admiral (imho the BEST resto in Asheville) seconded the recommendation. Our wonderful bartendress, whose name I neglected to get, clued us in to the part of the vibe going on here. Though fairly empty when we arrived, a band was setting up and it looked to be getting livelier around 9PM. Crowd seems to be one of two minds: folks drinking cheap beer (PBR seems to be beverage of choice) or bourbon geeks, as they have an excellent selection to chose from. Went on karaoke night and had a blast. The place is pretty cool: great eclectic decor, cool bathrooms ... I wouldn't call it a dive bar so much as a kitschy bar. Bartenders were super cool. Do not go here! We went based off of the reviews and were shocked at what we walked up to. 1. This is in a terrible part of town where you are not comfortable leaving your vehicle due to the vagrants that end up asking to give it a wash for you while you eat. 2. As soon as you walk up to this location, you are met by what I can only describe as the strung out nation. Wouldn't have been surprised if there were needles around, but we were too concerned with what was around us to pay much attention to that. Also, you need to know this is a 'Members Only' establishment. Not sure what else to say to convey the disappointment we felt, but obviously we immediately left. Do NOT go here if you value your safety or want any variety of drink as the selection they did have was very poor/limited. read more

Double crown is a great bar when it's not busy. They have really cluttered New Orleans inspired decor with a few giant circular booths and a long bar inside. The specialty cocktails are delicious and they have a great bourbon selection. Outside is small and has a few picnic tables. The bartenders are not especially friendly but it feels homey and super casual and comfortable. Personally I love this place when it is really slow. When they're busy like on Sunday nights, it is way too crowded for me. read more

I'm a fan, and now I am a member too. This is a Private Club, though not very exclusive. My wife and I wandered in while checking out West Asheville and we just love divey kind of bars so this was right up our alley. One thing that is not very divey is the beverage program. They have high quality spirits and some damn good specialty cocktails. I highly recommend the Appalachian Old Fashioned. This is a cool bar, divey feeling, daily drink special board, and the prices for really fine bourbon are amazing. Celeste rules, she is so friendly and gives good drink recommendations. Occasionally they have a food truck outside, grill setup in the summer and locals cook food to bring it to share with everyone. Outdoor seating, dog friendly and karaoke every Sunday night. I've seen some bad ass bands play here as well. Definitely a west Asheville staple bar. read more

We absolutely loved double crown. This is an amazing dive bar with people from all walks of life - very cozy atmosphere and people looking to meet new, different folks. There was live music, and we were impressed with the drink deals (PBR and a shot for $5)! The only thing that confused us a little is that you have to be a member or a guest of a member - I think it cost $1, which is totally fine, just caught us off guard - but luckily some nice dude outside let us enter as his guest. The bartender Don (Dan, Den, Darnell? Probably Don) is the most angelic heavenly body ever sent down to this earth. I, having had the most horrendous day of my life; waltzed into this dive bar expecting the usual. Bad karaoke (performed by myself) and drinks after waiting in line like an average patron. Instead Don (most likely his name) saw us while we were signing in and made me and my friend our drinks... so I walked into the most beautiful greeting I had ever seen. 2 gin an tonics ready for consumption. Karaoke every Sunday night is a hoot. Places to hang out both indoors and outside.
