So I find myself shaking my head that I'm even writing a review for Broadways. I only write food reviews and a year or so ago I would never have thought to be writing a food review for this business, but here we are! I haven't actually been in Broadways since the change and was pleased to find it's still the same old place, just perhaps a little cleaner which is nice! We ordered three dishes to get a broad spectrum of their offerings, and well we got a wide variety of quality along with those dishes. At the recommendation of the chef I ordered the Pho and man I was not disappointed! A super flavorful broth that smelled divine was filled with perfectly cooked noodles and both meatballs and sliced beef. I inhaled it and loved every bite. I'd have given them a 5 star review if we'd stopped there. I'm a sucker for dumplings so we ordered the fried pork dumplings, they came a bit soggy with oil, a fast food chain tub of sauce and were unmemorable in flavor. I'd have given them a 3 star review based on just the dumplings. We decided to go for the Pad Thai special for our third dish and got it with chicken. The dish didn't really taste much like any Pad Thai I've ever had but wasn't unpleasant in sauce and noodle, it came with shrimp which was a little odd and the shrimp were a little bit over done. The killer here was the chicken. Have you ever microwaved raw chicken? You know how chewy and dry it gets? Well that's what was in our Pad Thai. It was really really bad. If this was the only thing we'd ordered I would have given them a 2 star review. That Pho though! Good enough that I will go back since the only other Pho I think is remotely as good is the recently renamed Pho R Us in south Asheville and I live a mere mile from Broadways. So a few months back Broadways got sold to a Vietnamese family, and it's precisely the same gritty divey bar we all remember, except now it serves damn tasty Pho. Until 1 in the morning. Incredibly awesome!!! I went there tonight and had a sandwich which was kind of like the bastard child of banh mi and a carne asada burrito. Very odd, om nom nom nom. Get your butt over there. When I moved to Asheville three years ago I despised Broadway's. My friends were always there and I didn't understand why. When the front door opened, through the pea soup-thick fog of cigarette smoke and dim lighting, I could make tables full of gutter punk kids with ironic facial hair drinking PBR and scowling up at whomever entered the bar. And it was cash only. (The queen carries more cash than I do.) Then I was dragged kicking and screaming into the bar one Sunday afternoon about a year ago. To my surprise, Scott served me up the best Bloody Mary I'd ever had. I started dropping by every Sunday for a while to have a cocktail up on the deck and watch the passersby on Lexington Ave, and then I started dropping by on my way home from work in the late afternoons. I gradually got to know the bartenders, the owner, and the blue-collar crowd who gather there every afternoon to talk about the situation of the world in general. A few of those guys taught me how to play pool. Another guy fixed my brakes. Another guy gave a ride to my roommate and I on one particularly cold December night, even though we only live 4 blocks away. And when any of those guys, the staff or the regulars, say, "take care" when I leave, I know they really mean it. Here's another good solid example of why Broadway's rules the world: I was in last night with a friend who was capital D-R-U-N-K, as is common in a bar where the drinks are cheap and stout. Every time he ordered a round, he tried to give the bartender (Don) $10. Don would slide him him beer across the bar with the $10 bill folded underneath it. What bartender TURNS DOWN a big tip from a really drunk patron? A solid one, and that's why Broadway's has become my favorite bar. (Well, that and the contact nicotine high.) In a nutshell, the manager has had either the good intuition or good fortune to hire the best bunch of people possible. They're good at their jobs and they care about the bar and the people who come there. I could go on and on about my love for this dive, but I'll wrap it up like this: if you're just in the market for a good cheap drink, go to Broadway's. But if you're sad, or lonely, or feel a little crazy, go to Broadway's, too. Have a cocktail, put some Miles Davis on the jukebox, and talk to Ted or JP about whatever news is on the TV. Broadways is a classic spot for locals. If you're from out of town don't even bother. It hasn't sold out like the rest of town. It's not a " friendly place " it's a bar, you get drinks there and smoke on the patio. That being said I love it so very much and hope it never changes read more

Where do you go late on a Saturday night when you're hanging out with the coolest locals in town? Broadway's! You're not going to get in unless you have a membership, so make friends fast or move to Asheville if you're hoping to get in. A small bar with cheap drinks greets you and I highly recommend grabbing a seat on the patio out back. The real locals control the music here and the people that come in and out. I feel lucky enough to have been invited into Broadway's as a guest, and hope to spend nights at this joint in the future, by invitation only of course. It's on the outskirts of town, so won't attract a lot of attention, but it's definitely worth a drop in. read more

Oh, Broadway's: my Embassy of Mediocrity: my oasis of cheap, good times, shared with the people I love. Few other establishments, if any, have made me feel as at home over the years. The cocktails...wait, I've been going there for 9 years and have only had this one one CapriSun cocktail Todd made for a Myrtle-Beach-1993-themed dance party. Seriously, if you've got a problem with Old Crow Whiskey, dirt cheap house wine, and Miller High Life, you're gonna HATE Broadway's, so don't waste your time and cash. Sure, there are a few of good local beers on draft, but come on, don't be weird. Just go somewhere else, if you're thing is a giant beer selection. Events to check out are Karaoke, Burger Burger Burger!, the aforementioned seasonal Dance Party, billiards, Improv Comedy, as well as amazing touring acts like Future Islands and Everything Is Terrible! But what makes Broadway's feel like home: it's a Private Club. Like, not just as an excuse to serve alcohol and not serve food. No, Broadway's is the type of Private Club from when that used to mean something. If you're being aggressive, if you're harassing women, or if you're generally a douchebag: you will be kicked TFO once the staff is aware and asked never to return. No out-of-state ids. No BS. No second chances. And best of all: no unsupervised children with day-drunk parents! The fact of the matter is, Broadway's is content staying Broadway's, and so am I. read more

Asheville doesn't know what it has here. Every time I vacation in Asheville, during my annual night out (yes I only come back here once a year unfortunately), I end up finishing my night here. Oh and the fact that my annual night out always coincides with their weekly 80s night is no coincidence. Yes they do have a membership. They are not the only bar in Asheville, North Carolina, or the country to have that. Only $3 to get in as a visitor, although I didn't have to pay the last time I was there. I think because the bouncer knew the person I was with, and she was a member? I don't remember, by that point after hopping around Asheville the night was getting fuzzy. Anyway, cheap drinks with solid pours. I am more of a draft beer person myself, but if you are going to hop around a crowded dance floor, then it makes sense to just serve the beer bottled. $3 for a Yuengling (I prefer craft beers, but I was in a rush to start dancing, so I shot in the dark). After you run into your old high school classmates and do the awkward "how has it been?" conversations since you haven't spoken to any of them after graduation, it is really easy to make friends! Like a typical dance bar, you will have guys checking out the left hand and seeing the lack of bling, leech onto you before you can utter the word "Taken!" but....you do get drinks bought for you the rest of the night. Solid 80s music. Hardly a lull in dancing (that doesn't truly get started until after 11:30 pm), and the DJ will sometimes throw some modern mixes out there to bring people back onto the floor. The patio can be back with people taking a smoke break, or just socializing. Bathrooms are actually cleaner than expected. To sum it up, solid place to enjoy some fun tunes and wrap up an evening. Tip: get cash before you arrive. No cards accepted, at least upstairs where the dancing happens. read more

Worst bar in Asheville! Pretentious, rude, and down right dirty (in a bad way folks)! Being the only bar in asheville that has notoriously charged a "membership fee" (although you can get in by sliding the jerk behind the table three bucks) allows them to treat customers like crap. Bad drinks, high prices, rude staff. 10 minutes in this bar and you would think it physically impossible for them to get their heads any farther up their you-know-whats. Yeah I'm biased (this is a free web review, after all). Broadways treated me like crap and has done so to many people I know. I'll start out with this simple fact, I love cheap bars. With that said Broadway's is a gem in the world of cheap dive bars in Asheville. With a huge beer selection, both bottles and drafts this is a perfect place to start a night out before hitting the tonier Tiger Shark bar down the block or any of the other establishments within walking distance. I love the fact that Broadway's is a membership establishment, and I have had my membership card from my first visit. It's only $5 to join and your entitled to bring a guest free of charge. I try to visit the bar at different times and days because it feels like the atmosphere is changing by the minute. There are always a large hipster element sipping pbr or Sierras, but you'll find plenty of cool and different ppl to mingle with. Weekends it almost becomes more of a dance club. There are a lot of amenities that are deserving of praise, from the two story outdoor patio to the jukebox and pool tables this place is made to be comfortable and really encourages you to stay a while. While it might not be the coolest kid on the block its definitely my favorite. It's a great place to start and end your nights. read more

It's decorated like a grandmas house that is completely a aware of the treasures that line the walls, shelves, nooks, and crannies. It's simple. As a local in a tourist town, you need a spot that has little to no tourists. Broadway's is that place. If you're a tourist and you're looking for a great little bar that the locals love, don't go to Broadway's. You'll be greeted with mean mugs and will probably asked to leave because (I can only assume) you aren't a member. Gosh Asheville has a million bars all of a sudden and it's kinda getting out of hand. But this is one of the OG's in downtown. Which is good and bad. Bar tenders aren't showy mixologist d-bags, there good down to earth ppl. The drinks are reasonably priced. The bad, well it's gross and boring aesthetically. The layout is awkward and makes you want to drink more then you should. The ground floor patio turns into a pit of standing water and mildew when it rains (or if it's rained in the last 5 days). The nights to go to at this place are 80's night(Wednesday's) and the Trivia night(Monday's). Any other time should be reserved for bad breakups and snow days when your looking for a weathered local to hook up with on a whim. They will have the occasional good show about every six months. read more

Ahh, Broadway's. Where to begin? It has all the ingredients necessary to make it your favorite neighborhood dive bar. There is the delightful, accommodating staff (who truly are the heart and soul of Broadway's), in particular one charming bouncer/bar-back who serves as eye-candy for all the ladies. Somehow I've not reviewed Broadway's yet! This is a shame since it's probably the bar I visit most. Broadway's doesn't put on any fronts, it is what it is, and we love Broadway's for it. In the summer, they have Saturday night dance parties outside. Sundays they have Burger Burger Burger in the kitchen making, well, burgers. Cheap drinks, pool, great outside space, the ultimate dive bar. This will always be the place we go to when we're having a bad time in town somewhere else. My husband discovered Broadway's on a recent visit to Asheville and was itching to show me the digs. It is in a building which feels like a mixture of treehouse with the upstairs deck to the dungeon with its dark pool room and bar. Speaking of pool, my husband joined for that reason. On the day we visited, the bartender was very nice. Plus, he poured a huge glass of cheap butt wine. I needed it because my pool playing skills are less than stellar. There is another outdoor area outside of the dungeon pool room and underneath the tree house deck. It has a beachy effect, with lounge chairs for what else but lounging. Music was good. Broadway's was playing classic rock. A lot of David Bowie from what I can remember. I like it. And, I will be sure to think of Broadway's when I need a big ol glass of wine to compensate for my pool game. read more

Broadway's is members only, but since our group was there for Kipper's Trivia, they let us as guests in after he arrived. Which was really decent of them. And you should definitely go to Kipper's Trivia. It's ridiculous and irreverent and a heck of a lot of fun... provided you're not too easily insulted. It's $2 a person with a team limit of 6, but everyone gets a prize no matter where they placed. That and the sheer hilarity make it worth the money. read more

Go to '80s night. It's not the same since the last DJ got sent to prison, but it's still good nonetheless. Drinks here are nothing special, and they only accept cash, so keep that in mind. The folks working here aren't the most delightful. Outside of '80s night, I pretty much avoid it, as it's an older grodier crowd then. Check it out once at least if you're in to dancing. read more

Can't actually rate what it's like inside. Tried to check this place out but the not so very friendly "bouncer" told us it was $5 each to pay for a membership each and we couldn't enter for 3 days. When trying to get an explanation of this rule, the bouncer rolled his eyes and handed us the hand written rules that on a coaster. We happily walked away to another business 1 block away. read more

Had a lot of fun here on 80's night during my vacation in Asheville. Broadway's was recommended by a local and was a block from the hotel my bf and I were staying at, so it was the last stop for our evening. This place is members only and cash only, though our dogs have an ATM. The bartenders have typically been rude when I have been there. And most customers, even though driving, don't seem to be having fun. It's a bit depressing. Liquor is also expensive. At least the drinks are strong. read more

After searching for months for an 80's dance club, my friends and I found Broadway's!! We are going to make it a regular Wednesday night thing, but are sincerely hoping the music is better next time, and the a/c is working! The upstairs dance area was stifling hot and the deejay, while playing a few actual 80's dance tunes, seemed to be off in left field somewhere. I grew up in the 80's and didn't recognize the majority of his choices, many of which were too slow for actual dancing and too fast for slow dancing, but that aside, we will be returning and asking friends to join us!! I am hoping it was just an off night, but perhaps I need to lower my expectations? Part 2!! Went back this week, and the music was awesome!! I am pretty sure everyone that works there hates their jobs as well as 90% of the customers that come in. The Juke box is too expensive (2 songs for a dollar) and the place is silent unless someone puts money in it. 80's night has gotten progressively worse (what happened to the edge?), can you say Kasey Kacem. With all of this said, it is a an Asheville Fixture that has remained virtually unchanged. The drinks are super stiff, and given time you might even be liked by some of the staff (I do love Todd.) This private club is exclusive and expensive. While visiting some family in Asheville, I realised one of my favourite bands from New York City would be in town to play at Broadways. I in fact knew a couple of the members so after getting a few beers we made our way down to Broadways where they were preparing to get their gear prepared. But on arrival, they were very very rudely greeted by the bouncer who condescendingly told them that there was no way they would be allowed entrance because one of the members was underage and everyone had out-of-state IDs. After trying to argue with the bouncer the booking manager finally arrived and realised that she had booked the band herself but would still not allow the band to play their show. Now mind you, this was the bands last show of their tour and travelling from the last show to this one cost them a lot of money. I would not recommend going to this venue if you support musicians. read more
