After a day of hellish travel, we decided to get into a car and travel more. Everyone told us to go to Ashville and it was a great decision. We found Hulu Sue's and there was a parking spot right in front so we decided to come in for lunch. The ambiance was friendly and inviting. Although it was really busy, we were immediately seated at the last indoor table. We ordered the Poke bowl and the combination bowl and a spam appetizer. The started was simple and delicious. I was never on the spam bandwagon, but this simple preparation was fantastic. The poke bowl was delicious. It was a little heavy on the mayo, but all the components were great. I loved the macaroni salad. It was the reason I wanted to come in and I was happy! I sampled some shrimp and chicken from my guy's dish and they were both great-well seasoned and well prepared. I wasn't a fan of the pork, it felt on the dry side. We also noticed that NC likes their sauces. I mean, I like sauces, but I never expect 4-6 options on the table. We tried a little of each and the curry based option and the mustard were my favorites! This is a great find. I didn't realize that small towns still close up shop early on Sundays. We had a good experience at Huli Sue's this last week for dinner. To start - we loved the inside of the restaurant / atmosphere / service / wait staff. Everyone was very nice and offered suggestions. For drinks - I got the Mai Tai - which was tasty. For entrees - I got the brisket nachos and my husband got the brisket sandwich + corn bread. He really enjoyed the corn bread. As for the entrees - the brisket itself was quite good in both dishes. However - I would not order the nachos as your meal...for yourself. By the time you're able to dig into all the nachos - they get a tad gooey/old on the cheese. If it was shared amongst people, it would be better b/c you would eat everything quicker. Huli Sue's was the perfect pre-show dinner spot. We were in Asheville last month for a comedy show and walked over for drinks and dinner beforehand -- such a great choice. We had some really fun, delicious drinks to start, and the bartender was friendly and on point without being overbearing. The space itself felt just right -- not too big, not too cramped -- and everything was clean (including the bathrooms, which always matters). Food-wise: wow. My husband ordered the Hawaiian teriyaki burger, and I got the Hawaiian combo bowl with huli chicken, pork katsu, and sweet chili shrimp, served with rice, Hawaiian mac salad, and pickled cabbage. Oh. My. God. So good. Everything was flavorful, well-cooked, and super satisfying. I couldn't quite finish my bowl (portions are generous), but I really wish I'd had room for dessert because they all looked amazing. First stop on our weekend get away was to find some lunch. Checking Yelp, this was a too recommendation near us, so we decided to give it a try. We were given the option of indoor or outdoor seating upon arrival and with nearly perfect fall temps, we decided to dine outside. The server, Ren, was very friendly, and made some suggestions. I got the pulled pork sandwich, as she advised their brisket was a bit more fatty. Given the options of sides, I opted for their Friday special and got a cup of the Brunswick stew. Everything was very tasty, served quickly and just a good starting point to our trip in western NC. Check their menu for drink deals, for instance on Fridays specialty drinks are $3 off! For appetizers we got cornbread and the brisket nachos. The nachos were some of the best we've had, and I give them props for the ration of chips to toppings being perfect. The cornbread had a delectable candy butter on top. I went here for the first time today. My server was Sara, and she was super friendly and helpful in giving recommendations and explaining the menu and specials. I got the Hawaiian Combo bowl because I'm indecisive and wanted to try the pork, Sue's Huli chicken and the shrimp. All three were very flavorful and delicious. My favorite was the chicken- it was so tender and I loved the sauce. The rice was fluffy and the Hawaiian macaroni salad was much better than regular macaroni salad I've had elsewhere. I got the brisket nachos, which were pretty to look at and tasted alright but were difficult to eat based on the presentation. I'm not sure how you get all the toppings together when the chips and toppings are spread out like they are. I tried the sweet chili shrimp off my friend's bowl and it didn't pack a lot of flavor. We knew when we're in for something special when the patio had no more seating. We were immediately greeted by the most pleasant maitre'd and sat indoors around 12:45PM on a Friday. We started with the Crispy St. Louis Ribs, amazing! A fried rib covered in sweet glaze that paired well with the ribs. They were tender and were not greasy at all. I ordered a Lilikoi Mule, which was an amazing Moscow Mule with a pineapple and flower garnish; so nice, I ordered it twice! Now let's talk about this Hawaii Combo Bowl entree. If you are indecisive like me, this dish is perfect for you. Pork katsu, Sue Huli chicken and 3 extra large sweet chili shrimp served over a bed of rice with pickled purple cabbage and macaroni salad. One of the best lunches I've had in quite some time. Had a late lunch with my wife at Huli Sue's today. All-in-all we had a good time and a very good experience. The staff was super friendly, the hostess, the server, the bartender. I've been to the islands a couple of times, and Huli Sue's does a good job with the vibe. The food was generally very good. I had the pulled pork plate with slaw, my wife had the ribs with fries. Both meats were as good as it gets, and the BBQ sauces offered were spot on. I found the sides didn't live up to the meat - the slaw was strangely "flat", taste-wise, just not much there. The fries were good but not great. All-in-all we were happy with our lunch, and will likely be back the next time we're in the Arcade area at lunch time. read more

Both dishes were phenomenal! The cornbread was perfectly savory and crumbly, filled with soft pieces of corn and had a nice green chile flavor at the end. Sweet creamy honey butter was a heavenly compliment. The Mochiko Chicken Bowl featured super juicy tender chicken with a perfectly crisp breading. The side of rice was nicely soft and savory, the cabbage was crisp and tangy, and the pasta salad was soft and creamy.
