Christian the bar tender recommended the Mochiko chicken bowl and knew his STUFF about Mai tai's. I was concerned about Hawaiian food, having experienced the island. It tends to be mild and sometimes overly beige. This food was NOT THAT. The Mochiko bowl was a fusion dish I'd order weekly if I lived here. It reminds me of the blended culture of the islands where so many come together. We also had the burger, a solid example of the smash craft BUT the best GD sweet potato fries I've ever had. Located outside the Grove Arcade, be prepared to put your name on the list and wait. Even on a Sunday when they first opened at 11 a.m., there was already a long line. We would have gotten in line earlier if we had known. There is both indoor and outdoor seating. If it is raining, the outdoor tables can still get wet even with the umbrellas. I got sprinkled on a bit during the light rain until I changed seats. The winner for me was the Hawaiian Combo with Huli Sue's chicken, pork katsu (breaded, fried pork), and three huge sweet chili shrimp, along with rice, Hawaiian macaroni salad, and pickled cabbage. Even my husband perked up with a "Yum!" when I gave him some of the chicken. He ordered the BBQ Sampler with prime beef brisket, pulled pork, and pork ribs, plus cornbread and coleslaw. The brisket was his favorite. The ribs had some of the white knuckle-like cartilage and connective tissue that you had to eat around, which I didn't particularly like. We went to Huli Sue's on Monday night. The staff is extremely friendly. We were seated immediately. The special were MaiTais. They were delicious. We started with the homemade SPAM, a Hawaiian fan favorite. The pork appetizer was nicely seasoned and garnished with a little slaw. We decided to share the bbq sampler plate hoping to have room for dessert. The sampler offered ribs, pork and brisket. All of the meats were smoked perfectly and fork tender. My husband and I enjoyed a spontaneous dinner date night here and it was terrific! Our server Eden waited all the outdoor tables and this section was quite busy. Yet we felt well cared for. We found Hulu Sue's and there was a parking spot right in front so we decided to come in for lunch. The ambiance was friendly and inviting. I loved the macaroni salad. It was the reason I wanted to come in and I was happy! I sampled some shrimp and chicken from my guy's dish and they were both great-well seasoned and well prepared. I wasn't a fan of the pork, it felt on the dry side. We also noticed that NC likes their sauces. I mean, I like sauces, but I never expect 4-6 options on the table. We tried a little of each and the curry based option and the mustard were my favorites! This is a great find. I didn't realize that small towns still close up shop early on Sundays. I got the pulled pork sandwich, as she advised their brisket was a bit more fatty. Given the options of sides, I opted for their Friday special and got a cup of the Brunswick stew. Everything was very tasty, served quickly and just a good starting point to our trip in western NC. We had a good experience at Huli Sue's this last week for dinner. To start - we loved the inside of the restaurant / atmosphere / service / wait staff. Everyone was very nice and offered suggestions. For drinks - I got the Mai Tai - which was tasty. For entrees - I got the brisket nachos and my husband got the brisket sandwich + corn bread. He really enjoyed the corn bread. As for the entrees - the brisket itself was quite good in both dishes. However - I would not order the nachos as your meal...for yourself. By the time you're able to dig into all the nachos - they get a tad gooey/old on the cheese. If it was shared amongst people, it would be better b/c you would eat everything quicker. Huli Sue's BBQ and Grill is located at 1 Page Ave Ste 150, Downtown Asheville in a beautiful space with indoor and outdoor seating. Be sure to call ahead for seating with the wonderful staff because this place gets packed and for good reason. This place doesn't just make regular BBQ but a mix between Texas and Hawaiian BBQ! If you're looking for that savory/sweet heavy caramelized bark, deep pink smoke ring, and meat that melts in your mouth of a brisket or those Big Island flavors of Loco Moco, Hawaiian bowls, and Mahi Mahi look no further. I made the very tough choice to choice the sampler served with juicy brisket, tender pulled pork and succulent ribs with a cornbread that was absolutely out of this world and a side. My side was the very fresh and mellow flavored Cole slaw that I used as a pallet cleanser between meats. On the table they had three BBQ sauces, the LiLikoi gold which was a sweet yet tangy tropical mustard that pared well with the ribs, the Crackseed which had a sweet but peppery flavor and went well with the brisket, and the Paniolo sauce with tasted like a regular BBQ except with a Smokey taste which went great with the pulled pork! I went here for the first time today. My server was Sara, and she was super friendly and helpful in giving recommendations and explaining the menu and specials. I got the Hawaiian Combo bowl because I'm indecisive and wanted to try the pork, Sue's Huli chicken and the shrimp. All three were very flavorful and delicious. My favorite was the chicken- it was so tender and I loved the sauce. The rice was fluffy and the Hawaiian macaroni salad was much better than regular macaroni salad I've had elsewhere.
