I love Southern cooking and especially local spots, so I was excited to try this hometown feeling place while visiting Black Mountain. The service was very friendly and fast, and I can truly said, it is where the locals eat. But... the food was just not that good - my husband and I were both disappointed. His fried chicken sandwich ($11) was 2 chicken fingers on a bun with a slice of American cheese and toppings. The chicken was like chicken nugget meat, not real chicken tenders. The fresh tomato slice on the sandwich was the best part. The fries were basic - crinkle fries. I ordered a pick 4 veggie plate. The fried okra and fried squash were pretty good. The green beans were fine, and the Mac and cheese looked and tasted just like box Mac n cheese. Overall, it was just ok. Honestly I'm a little surprised by the positive reviews. I would give this place 100 stars if I could. Walking in, you are greeted by a full Christmas village just like your grandma had, and the entire restaurant is decorated for Christmas. The waitress was so kind and when our toddler started crying, she brought her a children's book which immediately calmed her down. The food is incredible and very affordable. I wish we lived closer because this would definitely be in the weekly rotation. This place sucks. I ordered a bacon egg and cheese biscuit and some french toast. The French toast was served with a massive wad of cold margarine. It was super over cooked and barely edible. The bacon egg and cheese biscuit was last year's model. The biscuit was not home made and it was old, overcooked, and fell apart. The same goes for the eggs and bacon. Everything is served on paper plates with disposable cutlery. The "decor" consists of toy winter wonderland Walmarts. It's also super expensive. Avoid at all costs unless you're looking for a good ole boy truck stop meal of the lowest quality food possible, at a high price. read more

The sign says "where the locals meet to eat" and that describes it perfectly. It's downhome, friendly and fun - with really good southern cooking at very reasonable prices. We've tried the eggs, hash browns, sausage, French toast and biscuits and really enjoyed our breakfasts. Ditto for lunch - the hamburger patties are hand formed and cooked to order and the specials are particularly good - today the meatloaf sandwich was thick cut and well seasoned, the potato salad was great and the blackberry cobbler was wonderful. Everything seems to be house made and the whole place exudes southern hospitality with the most attentive and friendly staff in town. They serve breakfast and lunch - home style food, well made. I had the Farmhouse breakfast, which is quite a feast: 2 eggs, toast or biscuit, hash browns or grits, and your choice of meat: bacon, sausage, liver mush, corned beef hash, pork loin, ham... you get the idea. Lunch is primarily sandwiches, but they do serve a larger sized meal as well, with a choice of sides. The daily specials are the best! If you have special dietary needs, they work hard to accommodate. The staff here is always welcoming, knowing many of the regulars on a first name business. That means a lot to the folks who come in every day for fresh coffee, a hot meal, and the camaraderie known only in small town cafes. First, you need to know it's attached to the Shell station next to Burger King. I drove right past it the first time. There is a low sign at the road, but it's behind bushes so you won't see it. Parking is tight, but there are a lot of spaces. The spaces are narrow, and there are a lot of pickup trucks so visibility is limited. Handicapped parking is right in front of the door. The door opens on one end of the restaurant, so you will be able to check the whole seating area for spaces. We found an open booth right away. It was nearly full, but turnover is pretty fast. Menus are on the table, and our waitress came by within a couple minutes for the drink order. The menu it's not huge, but there are a lot of options, so we needed a few minutes to decide. I had two eggs over medium, bacon, sausage, hash browns, and a biscuit and gravy. The food arrived in 5-7 minutes. The eggs were over easy with runny whites. Not bad enough to send back, but not what I ordered. The sausage was excellent, cooked perfectly and flavorful. The bacon was crispy without being burnt, but pretty salty. The hash browns could have used another minute on the grill, as they were lightly crispy on the outside and not at all on the inside. Probably more a personal preference, YMMV. The biscuit and gravy was almost good. The gravy was thick and flavorful, but the biscuit was hard. It was not overdone, but maybe dried out. We also had a bacon, egg, and cheese croissant. The cheese was regular American cheese and the bacon was salty, but overall not bad. Service was good to excellent. There were many locals eating there, and the wait staff knew most by name. read more

I worked here for a couple of months. I've dined throughout the US in many low key and fine dining establishments. I can only say that this IS ONE OF THE BEST PLACES I'VE EVER BEEN!!! Everyone, from the owner on down to the cooks, servers, dishwashers, and just everyone, have always shown that southern cooking and hospitality is among the best in the world. They will go out of their way and bend over backwards to give you an experience you couldn't possibly find in the best restaurants! . . . and the food? OMG, just picture being back in the old days when grandma made you the best home cooked meal !!! I went to culinary school at AB Tech and i gotta say, these people can teach them what a real gastronomic pleasure it is to enjoy a down right home cooking. Totally loved this place - it's like Waffle House, but local and way better (as a born & raised Southerner, I like Waffle House as I'm supposed to, so I mean that as a compliment). It's the kind of place where people call you "hun" and smile while they pour the yummy coffee, and you can hear all the other patrons talking about the school pageant the night before or about getting their hair done at the local beauty parlour. Everyone seems to know everyone and it just has that great, hometown charm that you can't get just anywhere. French toast, hash browns, bacon.... all delicious. Consider this constructive criticism. Don't go cheap on the coffee. One of those small local.places you might miss especially because it's under the same roof as a gas station. Don't. My wife and I were in town on a weekend getaway and came across this gem of a restaurant. The service was great and the server was very prompt and friendly. We ordered a simple breakfast consisting of scrambled eggs, bacon, hash browns and either your choice of toast or a biscuit. I had the biscuit and it was so moist and delicious. But, let me be clear... this place is the real deal!!!! My wife and I were just trying to find a place where I could get a decent cup of coffee when we discovered this hidden gem in the Swananoa valley area. The food is great. ATTENTION! THEY RE-OPENED! After dealing with a landlord who couldn't keep the heat on and the pandemic, Breakfast Shoppe moved a mile down the road to 2077-D US HWY 70. Its still Swannanoa, just further West. I was driving past and slammed on the brakes when I saw their sign and almost caused an accident. The same owner, same menu, different location, slightly different hours. It turns out they have been reopened about a year but when they left a sign on the door of the old place, the landlord kept ripping it down. I'll be back to my three visits a week to enjoy all the breakfast and lunch delights I miss. The only other difference is everything is served plastic. The customer service here is great. I placed an order for 6 people for takeout and the woman taking the order was so friendly and funny. She really made everyone feel at home. This establishment also seemed to have repeat patrons who greeted the staff and displayed familiarity with them. The only drawback for me was the small portion size of the hash browns.
