Smothered steak, real mashed potatoes and collards.
    Janet G.

We arrived in Asheville late this evening and we were staying at the Ramada Inn. We drove right by the restaurant on our way to the hotel and it had 4 stars so we checked in and decided to try it. It reminded us of our Morrison's Cafeteria from our home town. The food choices were endless but we finally decided on smothered steak, mashed potatoes and collards for me, roast beef, broccoli casserole and green beans for my husband. We got a slice of lemon meringue pie to split. I loved everything on my plate. The collards tasted great but didn't taste greasy or bitter at all. My husband said the broccoli casserole was just ok but he really enjoyed the roast beef and green beans. For both of us the food was very plentiful and neither of us could eat it all. We did, however, eat the piece of pie. It wasn't as good as mine but it was still good, with real meringue. We were pleasantly surprised by the food and the friendly service.

I go to Black Mountain at least once a year and when I do I have to go to J&S each time I go. I have never been disappointed in my food here. One thing I always get is the 7 layer salad. It has lettuce, mayo, peas, cheese, eggs, bacon bits, and corn. It is creamy with some texture to it with the boiled egg chunks, and crunch from the lettuce. I also love the southern fried steak. It is covered in brown gravy and I get it sitting on a mountain of mashed potatoes. I finally discovered their chicken fingers on my last trip. These things are huge! They have a beer batter or tempura type breading on them. They are great dipped in the gravy. All of the sides I have had have been really tasty. They range from baked carrots to fresh broccoli. J&S has introduced an all you can eat special. I have not ordered it as I can never finish the portion I get on a regular plate.

No nonsense cafeteria in south-east Asheville. Serves all the traditional cafeteria fare and has great table service.

It was elevated Southern cuisine, and we enjoyed it enough that we may go back before leaving the area. The restaurant has a comfortable feel -- upscale, but not stuffy. The service was excellent. The servers were personable and attentive without hovering. At one point, I accidentally dropped my napkin, and our server immediately brought me another one. Our water glasses were continually refilled, and our server checked in regularly to make sure we had everything we needed. My partner and I liked so many things on the menu that we knew ordering soup, salad, an appetizer, and entrées would be too much. We told our server we were sharing, and for most of the courses, they divided the portions and brought them out on separate plates. That was another small touch that showed they were paying attention to detail. There wasn't anything we had that we wouldn't order again. We started with the seasonal soup, which was a tomato bisque, followed by the strawberry and feta salad. The country ham board was excellent and actually had me looking for Lusty Monk mustard the next day. For our main entrée, we shared the shrimp and grits, which was also delicious. Great food, thoughtful service, and a comfortable upscale atmosphere. This was the best meals we had in the area.

The atmosphere was welcoming and cozy, while still being very modern. Our server was very charming and helpful - especially with my food allergies. The food was delicious and we were surprised by a nice amuse bouche (romanesco salsa on a homemade tortilla chip) Warning: on the pecan crusted trout the ginger sweet potatoes were VERY ginger-y. Delicious, but make sure you love ginger before ordering!

The orginial,…read moreOG, Tupelo Honey on College Street in downtown Asheville is one of those places when you walk in you feel at home - in a history lesson of culinary - and in someone's kitchen all bundled into one. Comfortably tucked away behind their own relaxation facade, this location in downtown is the definition of good ole' southern cuisine, cozy and welcoming environment, with service unmatched! Our two dishes ordered = perfection! Service = unreal. Maya was incredible. She made this experience (already a great one as soon as you walk in) to beyond comprehension. She delivers a type of service and expertise that I've only experienced in other places like Inn at Little Washington or French Laundry. Maya, you were awesome! Thank you. Anywhere within an hour of Asheville, I will be making a sharp turn to come back here!

The online reviews also raved about the place, so I went in with high expectations. I was surprised by how large the restaurant was. There were multiple rooms, and the space had a comfortable diner feel to it. I ordered the chicken tenders with a side of mac and cheese. Unfortunately, I was not impressed with the chicken tenders. They were dry and had a gritty texture. The mac and cheese, which I normally love, came off as more greasy than cheesy. My partner had the fried chicken and said it was good, but he was not overwhelmed by it either. Parking in the area can also be challenging. We found a spot, but most of the meters nearby were only good for one hour. By the end of the meal, we could not find our server, and I was getting concerned that we were going to end up with a parking ticket. Overall, it was not terrible, but based on the hype, I expected more.
