The cashier was friendly, and we got our food quickly. A bonus was the orange bang at the soda machine, which was so good. My only complaint/wish is that there would be a smaller size/half order of the chili cheese fries. The Hat is really starting to make me sad. I've been a fan for decades and now every time I go they disappoint me. Last time it was overcooked lukewarm fries in my chili cheese fries. This time it was the shrunken portion of chili cheese fries. I remember when you used to get a whole tray of chili fries. Then they added the cup holder tray to skimp on the portion size. Glad I gave them a second try. They're open relatively late in comparison to the other restaurants around, especially on a Sunday night. Super clean, nice vintage look on the inside. Service was really fast too. Their drink fountain is touchless, which I have NEVER seen at any other establishment before. Pretty neat in my opinion. We got the: 1) Potato Salad: -Standard mayo based potato salad with a good amount of potato chunks in it. 2) Onion Rings: -It's a massive portion of onion rings, definitely shareable. -Crispy on the outside and the onion on the inside wasn't too stringy or chewy like at some other establishments. 3) Pastrami Dip: -Doesn't come with its own au jus, you'd have to order it on the side. -Chock to the BRIM with pastrami in it. I have been eating pastrami sandwiches at The Hat for about 50 years. This is the first time that I have been disappointed in the pastrami sandwiches! I ordered a pastrami sandwich with extra mustard and extra wet! When I got home, my pastrami sandwich had about a third of the usual pastrami on it, barely any mustard, and barely wet! I have long considered The Hat to be the gold standard of pastrami sandwiches, but no longer! They used to make a superior pastrami sandwich, but I guess I'll have to find a new gold standard! It's very sad! Also, my wife got a chili cheese burger and I watched the cook cook her burger. They should train their cooks not to keep pressing down on their hamburger patties as they cook. Been coming here since they opened. I live right around the corner. Customer service is always great. Unfortunately the proportions have became very small compared to what it used to be. Always very clean. Used to have only one size of onion rings and it was enough for three people not like that anymore. Like most everywhere prices have gone up and proportions are down. Although I wish The Hat had some lighter food options to choose from, that's not why you come here and it won't stop me from being a return customer. The food portions are generous and the quality is as good as I remember since the past 50 some years when I first tried it. I cannot see myself paying the inflated food prices you get at fast food "restaurants" these days when I can get a much heartier meal here for my money. I can't imagine how many fries you get with the large order of fries because the small portion is more than enough for me to share with someone. The fries were fresh and made to order. They give you a ton of fries. The grilled cheese was pan toasted perfectly with globs of cheese. Yum! The French dip was a little on the thin side for meat but the Au jus sauce was killer! It's great with the horseradish sauce. But it's not as big as the pastrami sandwich.
