This place has barbecue as well as pizza. Kind of like a combo two in one type restaurant. They have several different specials, sandwiches, and a huge menu with lots of stuff. I opted to try the Wednesday special, which is a ribeye steak sandwich. Immediately I was told they were out. Then I was told I think I have one more left. It was a weird exchange altogether. I went ahead and got the ribeye steak sandwich. The steak was tender and delicious. Not a fan of whatever sauce they put on there. It came with a salad, which was serve yourself and some fries. Service was good, everyone was super polite and took care of whatever you may need. As far as ambience, they have TVs so that you can see games, there is seating inside and outside. Decent place, their order system is a little confusing. There's a sign that says order here, but there's not really a window or counter to order at. Oh my, I'm so happy I found Buckboard BBQ, again! I used to go to the restaurant over 20 years ago when they were in Upland. They eventually closed the restaurant in Upland and moved to Covina. I went to the Covina restaurant a few times but then I started traveling for work and wasn't in the area over a period of several years. When I returned to the Covina location I discovered they were closed ... too bad for me. I was in the Covina area again a couple of weeks ago and discovered they had a new (new to me) location. I called to confirm they were open and yes they were open! I walked in and that wonderful and familiar smell of red oak was in the air! I ordered my tri-tip sando, bbq sauce on the side and pinquito beans. I sat and ate at the bar, and watched the Dodgers vs Blue Jays game ... go Dodgers! The tri-tip was a bit dry but it was later in the evening when I arrived so I wasn't expecting it to be super moist but the flavor was there. The roll was tender but substantial and didn't fall apart. You can tell the tri-tip is roasted over lump red oak coals and not smoked. I believe they used regular pinto beans (I could tell by the size of the beans) but the seasoning was authentic pinquito seasoning. I was so happy with my meal! I drive up and down the Central Coast (tri-tip country) often and have had my share of Santa Maria tri-tip. I've had good, bad, average and great SM tri-tip. Buckboard has some of the best (IMO)!! It's the red oak that makes it authentic Santa Maria TT. I'll have to stop by earlier in the day next time for my TT fix. I spoke with Jess, one of the managers about how best to get my TT medium rare-medium. She advised that I call about an hour ahead and just ask for medium rare. That's what I'll do in the future. They had told me my order might take long because they need to heat the new batch up... okay whatever it's not fresh that's not a big deal . I waited for about 5 minutes. She brings out "the last of what they had" . I open the container the cheese isn't melted and it smelled old. It seemed like it had been in the fridge for two weeks and then microwaved. Came on a Saturday afternoon. Seems like the go to place after the kids sports game and people just hang out. Seemed short staff as some tables were left un-bussed. They charge a convenience fee for something that the cashier didn't even know what it was for. Got the Saturday special which is seven full ribs. Also with one time salad bar trip for $5. So disappointing! We've gone here for a few months, and the customer service is horrendous when Esther works bar area. Constantly rude to us, and we've been nothing but courteous to her in spite of the fact that she screws up our orders and ignores us when we pull up to the bar. Now they have a few employees (Will and Angel) that are the best, but instead of having the boys work the bar, they are stuck with food prep. Went in today, and I stood at the bar patiently waiting for Esther to acknowledge me, but she purposely never glanced my way, and I'm a big dude. You can't miss me when I walk in! We usually order a lot but tonight we could not even get a few beers so after waiting for 10 minutes while Esther farted around w/a customer that wanted to question why he had an $11 bill we left. Sorry Cameron, but your place is a hard pass for us in the future. We should not be treated like what I just described. I had the bbq beef rib and tri tip, and it was awful. The beef rib hardly had any meat on it. The tri-tip was tough and chewy, and a lot of fat. The only thing good was the beans. They have really gone down in quality. When I used to eat at the old Shopper's Lane location, the beef ribs were super meaty, with a 3/4" chunk of meat on both sides of the bone. Now it's too skimpy to even give to the dog. I'm going to Lucille's Smokehouse next time, they really know how to bbq the big beef ribs. read more

None of us have been here before it was the first thing that was for us all upon inside I really couldn't read most of the menu it was on the wall because of the brightness that later on someone in our group later shut the blinds so we weren't all baking in the sun in the small little room that was this interesting place place. Of what just sounded good was the BBQ bacon burger it was what it was just wasn't anything too great but what really made it all that better was there BBQ sauce which is actually pretty good the burger came with two sides the fries and some coleslaw the fries were good but that cabbage not so much as I herd others saying they liked only some of their food too either way I guess it was what it was more or less the company made this a better visit. We had a family get together normally go to a different barbecue spot since they were closed we decided to give buckboard a try I work locally have had some of their lunch specials which were decent so I assumed the barbecue would be the same. I spent over $200 receive cold stale beef ribs dried out cold chicken, and cold chicken and the Saint Louis ribs were also cold and tasteless. The staff was so friendly I feel bad leaving this review. However when I arrive to pick up my order the following day I think they forgot about it as it was not ready and I saw the staff scrambling to put it together on the last minute. My order was supposed to be ready at noon I arrived at 12:15. I am pretty sure I got left over from the day before. If I didn't it sure tasted like it. Another meeting in the books with great feedback from my coworkers. Wanted something different and I researched this place for days. Diane, the catering planner assisted me immensely! Without her help, I would still be researching! So many different selections and set ups for catering. With no help from my manager and no budget mentioned, If I could, I would of gotten the MEATS options of catering, but opted for the box lunch. I ordered a pulled pork sandwich combo and my husband a burger often. Once the pulled pork sandwich consisted of large dry chunks of meat. I couldn't chew it. Tonight I tried it again but this time I asked that the pulled up pork sandwich contain only shredded meat. I was assured the sandwich would of course be made of shredded meat. When we got home my sandwich, again, was made of large dry chunks of meat even after asking them to please not do that. Buckboard catered an event at my house for 120 people and they did not disappoint. They brought plenty of food, warmers, as well as "hot boxes" (for lack of a better term) to keep extra trays of food warm. Ribs (well seasoned), tri tip, chicken (very flavorful), potato salad and bread rolls were alllllll soooo good! So many guests were raving about the food as well. They also delivered and set up.
