I really like this place, but I'm giving it 3 stars because the staffing situation is honestly frustrating. On a Saturday night--one of the busiest times--there was literally only one person working the bar and serving everyone. That's not okay. This isn't on the employee, who was clearly doing their best. This is a decision by ownership/management, and it shouldn't be happening. No one should be expected to handle that kind of workload alone, especially during peak hours. I've been coming to bread & barley forever, and the food has always been great with zero complaints whatsoever. Came in to grab dinner with a friend. Everything just wasn't good. I ordered the chicken pesto sandwich. The pesto was overpowered by a cheese foam/paste on top of the sandwich, and the chicken was thin. Overall the taste was just off and the flavors just didn't mesh well within the sandwich. I was only able to eat half of it. Ordered a side of regular fries as well as sweet potato fries the regular fries tasted like they were freezer fries, and the sweet potato fries were burnt. The steak in the steak sandwich was rubbery, with very little if any chimichuri inside of the sandwich. It takes a lot for me to go out of my way to leave a review let alone a negative one. Stumbled across this small hole in the wall on Thursday night and happened to come see trivia night! We came to get some light bites and drink! We had a little trouble finding the front door of this place because it is not labeled at street level. Once inside, the space is very dark and fairly traditional "pub". At least during lunch time, this is a very family friendly restaurant! I ordered the Cubano sandwich and it was more BBQ indulgenced than I'm used to with a Cubano, but very good! At first i kept putting the black slime leaves to the side .. ..but when it was more bad slimy black leaves than good crisp green ones .... This is a small family-owned business located in Downtown Covina. From Day One, it has been popular. I tried to get in on the Grand Opening because they were giving away beer mugs, but the line was out the door. Over the years, I have dined here many times. I went on a Friday night and service was bad. It took almost an hour to receive my food, but the second waitress did mention that they were short staffed with cooks. The first waitress was new or lack of experience but also took forever, getting us water and our drinks and to take our order. She kept ignoring us and going to another table until we had to call her over. when we received our food, everything was burnt. The Brussel sprouts were burnt. The pork belly tacos were burnt, and the french fries were crispy, but a minute later probably would've been burnt and worst of all my chicken sandwich was burnt and black. as I mentioned this to the second waitress of the issues , she was very helpful and helped us out, but I guess the cook said that it was a different batter but still it should not have came out black. Second waitress , I forgot her name but Mexican, she was very helpful and definitely got everything in order when she arrived . The first one ( white young girl) seemed lost . I would give this place another try and hopefully it's better because the food did seem good or at least what parts we did eat and the drinks were good as well. They also did not have any wings when we went . I know we weren't the only ones with issues there, I think there was at least two tables with similar issues. We found dim lighting, a large group about to leave, the Dodger game was on the TV, and there was open seating available at the bar. I say that it was meant to be. We ordered a couple IPAs while we looked over the menu. I love it when breweries have a digital beer board that displays the check in on the Untappd app. We were feeling pretty special to see our names highlighted above the beer taps. Not going to lie..it's probably the number one reason we ordered a second beer. We wanted to take over the entire board! Back to the food! Any time there are Brussels Sprouts on the menu, I am ordering them. Probably my favorite item we ordered. In addition to the Brussels, we shared Sweet Chili Wings and I had a Smash Burger. I'm a sucker for Smash Burgers. Can't get enough of those crispy edges. I nibbled on my husband's Pulled Pork Mac N Cheese, yum! There were several people that seemed like regulars. Now to mine. Fish and chips. Hoping beer battered F&C at a gastropub would be good but no. Not a golden color. Very dark brown. Maybe used dark beer but kinda strange. Soggy and not crisp on arrival. I don't know what kinda fish they use but cod is most common. Usually big flakes but this fish was mushy like chopped fish in frozen fish sticks. Portion size small for price. Seating in the main room is a little chaotic because you can grab any open table, however there isn't a ton of standing room to not feel intrusive. I suggest heading toward the bar to get a beer and then assessing the seating situation. I shared the Doggie Style Fries ($12.00) which are basically like In-N-Out animal style fries. They're French fries topped with cheddar cheese, caramelized onions, pepperoncinis, and Thousand Island dressing. These were like a bigger version than the ones you get at In-N-Out. They were sweet and salty and paired perfectly with beer. I also ordered the patty melt ($16.50). It's a 6oz beef patty, Swiss cheese, sautéed mushrooms, jalapeños, caramelized onions, and Thousand Island dressing on a sourdough bun. This was good, but with the Doggie Style fries, it was a Thousand Island overload for me. Too. Much. Thousand. Island. I would definitely order this again, but I'd opt for another app instead. We could scan a QR code for the menu, but the staff there also had some paper menus they gave to us as well. We were on a brunch menu; I elected for their Penny Lane Bowl $12.50/No meat Tots, topped with over-easy eggs, cheese, guac, pico de gallo, sour cream, and salsa, served with a side of sourdough. Add Chorizo $2, Add Bacon $2, Add Carnitas $2, or Add Carne Asada $2 I may have added some carne asada to it (yeee) and also noticed they had a wall full of drinks you could order; I believe I elected for an apple pie hard cider which was quite a delight to try. The food itself? Yes it was a bit on the heavy side and I kinda wish there were more sourdough that I could mix the ingredients more, but it definitely did its job of satisfying my empty stomach. Might also be a good option to have fries on the side as well...hmm. Service here was great except for when you wanna pay your bill lol. Always seems like paying your bill is the hardest part. Just need to flag someone down at that point, but they were good on asking if the bottomless mimosas needed to be refilled and if we needed another drink. April 2024 - Went on a Thursday around 7pm. Party of 4, no wait but it did get packed around 8pm. Fyi, I noticed a 3% service fee is applied to all tabs. It said on the receipt that if you pay with cash they'll discount the fee from the tab. I noticed this after the tab was paid and I was home already. It would be nice for the establishment to be more upfront about this. There was no sign or verbal mention of this anywhere besides the receipt. Food/Pricing - OG Bravo Burger with fries - $19 - Solid burger with a slight kick of spice. The fries could've been a little more crunchy but that's just my preference. Absofruity Peach, 12 oz - $8.50 - If you enjoy sour (like me), then you'll love this drink! Service/Ambiance - Shout-out to the only server who was working at the front on Thurs, 4/18! You provided great and friendly service! Even when customers were endlessly piling in! Parking - Parking was a little tough but not impossible. They have a QR code on the window out front that says to scan the menu, but it doesn't bring you to the menu... it takes you to their webpage and then you have to navigate to the menu. Not a big deal, But why does it have to be more than one click? Other places that use QR code menus have the menu linked. Walked into a place that was only half full, most of the tables already have food. There was only one bartender working. In the time we were here another gal walked in and went directly to the back. Took about five minutes for the bartender to come over and bring us menus and take drink orders. Gal number two brought the drinks to us and asked us if we wanted to order. We were going to, but asked how long it would take to get food and she replied 35 minutes... Unfortunately, we need to leave in 35 minutes to go see a show over at the laugh factory. So no food for us. Also, it's the first day of the World Series. There are three TVs in here. They are on three different feeds, and for some reason they have the audio turned on on all three televisions. Nobody has been back by to check on us, or to give us a bill, and I've been able to write this entire review in the time that I've been sitting here. Can't even ask anybody if there's a chance they can turn one of the damn TVs down.
