Please read if you want an honest detailed review of this place.
1) This is a HUGE rip-off!
2) Basically, you can choose between a platter or a sandwich.
3) The platter costs $9.41 (including tax). All it has is a small scoop each of rice, lettuce & tomato and 2 small scoops of meat. They sometimes put 2-3 tiny bite size pieces of pita bread in there too.
4) If you chose the combo platter, you get 1 small scoop of chicken & 1 small scoop gyros, If you chose chicken platter, you get 2 small scoops of chicken, if you chose gyros platter, you get 2 small scoops of gyros
.
5) The sandwich costs $7.27 (including tax). All it has is a tiny scoop of lettuce & tomato & 2 very small scoops of meat, depending on the type of meat you select, just like I mentioned for the platter above.
6) Now you can opt for 'Extra Protein' for additional $2 on either the platter or the sandwich, but all you are going to get is a very small extra scoop of Chicken or Gyro.
7)They designed it this way by making the 'platter' container very small and even without 'extra protein' it's pretty full and has no room for 'extra protein'. So even if you ask extra protein, they have the perfect excuse to just squeeze a 'little bit' of gyros or chicken in there just for the sake of adding 'extra protein' and it's just a waste of $2.
8) Now for the sauce- they have this 'white sauce' and 'red sauce'. All the white sauce contains is just a high fat variant of mayonnaise which is packed with fat & calories. The red sauce is just a very concentrated hot sauce. They charge you 50 cents for each tiny packet of white or red sauce if you want extra. That's a MAJOR rip-off right there. Who charges for an extra packet of sauce the size of a tiny ketchup packet? And that too 50 cents? Even places like Zaxbys who charge for extra ranch only charge 25 cents and their ranch is pretty sizable, not a very tiny ketchup packet!
9) Note that the white sauce on the side is also a whopping 330 calories with almost 300 calories packed with fat even though it's in a tiny 2 fl oz packet.
10) The rice is also extremely oily, maybe to make up for the dry gyros and chicken. So the goal here is create the most unhealthy food possible.
11) The reality is that this franchise when started in 1990 in NYC might have been something new back then for $5, but now there are much better franchises and restaurants like Mediterrenean Grill & Jerusalem Bakery that serve much higher quality meat, sauce and quantity for a cheaper price.
12) These guys just try to feed on the 'Hype' that started back in NYC and try to bump up the price so much that at this point it becomes a joke and anyone who keeps coming back to this are ignorant of the other restaurant options out there or just are blind followers who think this is the only place where they can come and get a bowl of chicken, lettuce, tomato & rice and have never even heard of restaurants like Moes & Chipotle.
13) If you happen to go here, the best option in my opinion, is the combo sandwich instead of the combo platter, since you get a full pita bread with a scoop of chicken & gyros, so you can taste both and get some lettuce & tomato. Only thing you're missing is the rice, which isn't worth the extra $2, since sandwich is $7.27 while the platter is $9.41.
14) Once you taste it, you'll gain satisfaction that you have tasted this 'overly hyped up' food, which is nothing special. The gryos looks gross to be honest and tastes that way as well and the chicken is just like the ones you would get at Moes or Chipotle - so again nothing special. The white sauce is not special at all - has no real taste - just a diluted version of mayonnaise. Hot sauce is just concentrated chilli powder paste - another waste. Mediterrenean grill has great tzatziki sauce and Jerusalem Bakery has great garlic sauce - both are special and thick and have great flavor.
15) The people who work there surely get a bunch of orders messed up - can't blame them - they work like machines all day - mostly adding lettuce, tomato, rice, chicken, gyros, white sauce, red sauce all day with NO breaks in between since there's mostly a line of people who are so blinded by the fact that there is nothing special about this place and that they're just going with the crowd without thinking and realizing this is just a cult like following without any special taste in the food, especially when there are tons of better, tastiier, cheaper, healthier choices out there.
