Our food was ok. The cheese bread had a weird flavor to it. The tables needed to be wiped down as well. Maybe we just caught it on an off night because several other reviews on yelp were really high but we were not overly impressed. The chicken teriyaki bowl was bland but the broccoli was perfectly cooked and there was plenty of chicken in the bowl but could have used more rice. I came here for a quick dinner and checked out the reviews, pictures, and menu before coming. It looked like a pretty good place to go to grab a quick bite but I must say it was not the greatest nor will I be back anytime soon. It's a very casual setting where you just order up at the counter, get a number, and they bring your food to your table. I ordered the fettuccine Alfredo and it came out in less than 5 minutes so I was already kind of skeptical. It looked pretty good and was a huge portion but tasted extremely bland and was also cold. The only tasty-ish item was the garlic bread that came with it. I also got a tomato basil soup that I expected to be my appetizer (but the pasta came out much quicker) and it was okay. It tasted like the Campbell's tomato soup from the can. If I do give this place another time, I'll probably try one of their sandwiches because they had a wide selection of them. SWEET POTATO FRIES!!!! I've been here 11 times and I cannot believe I haven't written a review yet! I work in the same plaza as the Grotto. I travel for work, so I am always on the hunt for a great place for lunch. The Grotto caught my attention. I've tried the chicken sandwich which is seasoned very well, where it's a little on the spicy side. I've tried the burgers, the veggie flat bread, a salad with salmon on it. They've all been great! I've even tried the kids meal. The thing I love the most is the sweet potato fries. They're the best I've ever encountered in my travels! They are so crispy, yet soft on the inside. They are so full of flavor and cooked perfectly every time I order it! I'm obsessed with them. My least favorite menu item was probably the kid's meal cheese burger. It was so plain and uninteresting. I hope my kids don't enjoy a burger like that. But I understand that many kids just like plain food. So I can't really judge, but for me personally, It's not the meal for me, but throw on some sweet potato fries, and we're in business! read more

Everything here was delicious! We arrived at 1:30, it was busy but not too bad. You order at the counter which I did think was weird but oh well. We got our food within 15 minutes. I ordered the salmon Caesar salad. It was the best Caesar dressing I think I have ever had. It was fantastic. My mother ordered the Swiss and Mushroom burger with sweet potatoes fries. The fired were some of the best I've had. She said the burger was great as well. My grandma order the chicken Alfredo and oh my god it was so tasty. For the price which was between $10-$15 it was WELL worth it. The atmosphere is very laid back. You get your own condiments and drinks and such, including silverware. Very very causal. So let's start with the food. 11 bucks for an avacado, bacon, chicken sandwich and some fries... Welll.. It was just ok.. The saving grace here was the sauce... Can't remember what kinda sauce it was, but it wasn't too hot and it had a good flavor too... I don't do spicy, but if you like a little bit like i do, this was just right. The chicken was seasoned well and cooked thoroughly, but what really made it just ok was the guacamole on the sandwhich.. It was very fresh, but coulda used some more seasoning or something to make it stand out. It was just plain old freshly crush quac... Atomosphere was good and there were a lot of people there so they must have other good things.. I did like that everything looks like it is cooked freshly there... One thing that did bug me was that they could spend a minute wiping down the walls and tables a bit more... doesn't even look like they have ever touched the walls... The Grotto is nestled into an unassuming short stretch of a strip mall. The location itself is a bit off my typical dinning radar and once inside the establishment I usually forget that I am in Springfield... For me, a meal at the Grotto is like being transported to an indie-like eclectic cafe that would normally belong in a more bustling and hip city. The Grotto offers a pretty expansive and undoubtedly unique menu. I dare say that the offerings are actually a tad ahead of their time here as far as Springfield is concerned. Pizzas, Burgers, Salads, and even some nice vegetarian options... The vegetarian selections alone put them leaps and bounds ahead of other SGF eateries. The pizzas are one of my favorite items on the menu. These pies are california kitchen style pizzas which are on the thin crispy side and dressed with an abundant heap of toppings. This won't be your boring traditional pizza. At The Grotto, pizza attire can include anything from goat cheese, basil, roasted red peppers, hand cut herbs, italian style sausage, and SO much more. I have had the pleasure of the Haight Ashbury, the White Room, and the Pasadena. All of them were a display of freshness, and showcased unique flavor profiles. The Pasadena was probably the most typical and would be a good launch point into the pizzas for the less adventuresome. A word to the wise: If you like your pies on the crisper side, be sure to specify that. My first pizza experience was a tad soft for my tastes, but when I asked for it extra crisp, it came out exactly to my liking. A burger will also provide a rewarding Grotto dinning experience. The burger topped with smoked bacon housed between a sourdough bun is easily one of the better burgers in town. It is moist, substantial, and totally lust worthy when had at med-rare... I have even tried the chick-pea burger which is a very satisfying and unique vegetarian option. It is served with a side of taziki sauce, which is an excellent complement to the chick-pea concoction. I still have a ways to go to fully traverse this enticing and unexpected menu, but everything I have experienced thus far has made me want to come back for more. I especially love that this place has a quality spread of craft beers both on draft and in bottles. This selection includes varieties from both Schlafly and Goose Island among others. I should probably mention that the beer supply can be enjoyed everyday but Sunday. I always forget this and show up on a Sunday though, and then feel a little deflated when I see the tap handles covered up by their no booze on Sunday policy.Though, I can usually manage to enjoy my meal even without the craft beer to wash down a unique feast. read more

I had my first experience with the Impossible burger here. I really enjoyed it way better than the beyond burgers I have had. The aioli was flavorful and I wish I'd gotten a side of it to dip the delicious battered fries that accompanied my sando. The patty was obviously not greasy but also didn't lack moisture to allow the burger with just the veg and smattering of aioli to be satisfying without too much doctoring. I did get mine with the accompanying cheese but it didn't really add much to the burger experience overall. I could have just removed it and the aioli and had a vegan burger. read more

Passing through Springfield on a Sunday and stopped in to support a local business. For those not familiar, you order at the counter and they bring your food to your table. At the end of the meal they also clear your table. Decor is bright and modern, very well done. Staff were friendly and helpful. The menu ranges from salads and sandwiches to hamburgers and flatbreds. I ordered the half prosciutto and arugula flatbred with a half Greek salad. My husband ordered the avocado chicken sandwich with fries. We also ordered a plate of the blue cheese chips...as recommended by so many reviewers. The flatbred was light, yet satisfying. The prosciutto and arugula are a nice pairing with the pesto. The Greek salad was tasty, but I was surprised that the dressing was slightly sweet. Greek salads that I have had in the past were not sweet at all. The chicken sandwich was a touch spicy, but not to any extreme. All high quality ingredients and overall a very good chicken sandwich. The battered fries had a nice crispness. The yelp description says "bar", but it's not really a bar. It's more of a clean, bright, simple cafe-type lay out. It's counter service, and was blasting Backstreet Boys outside. There's a small patio that I can see myself enjoying if I lived in Springfield. I ordered the blue cheese chips, a steak gorgonzola salad, and the ashbury pizza. The chips are freaking amazing!!! Everybody definitely needs to try it. It was perfectly fried with just the right amount of sauce. The steak gorgonzola salad was just okay. The steak was a tad over medium rare, and it was missing some crunch. There are candied pecans, but I think I saw 4 pieces total. This was not touched much. I'm confused. My wife and I must have come on an off day. My experience here was less than superb, contrary to the reviews this establishment has and the frequent visitors. I had the Teriyaki Bowl, it was nothing to write home about. The chicken was not seasoned, the brown rice was good and the broccoli was cooked perfectly but altogether the dish was just missing something. The "service", if you could call it that was sorry at its best. The young lady who took our order seemed frantic and like her mind was else where and we were a nuisance to her. I actually was a fan of being able to get up and get my own refills though. Half the time I have to wait for a lackluster wait staff to come ask me if my ice needs a refill with my soft drink so there's a plus. The menu was pretty cool and had a lot to choose from. The decor was modern and nice. Now the cleanliness and the smell was disgusting. I took my family to sit in a booth and almost gagged on the sour rag smell that was overbearing from that side and had to resort to sitting at a table. Overall my experience sucked and I'm going to assume that because today was a national holiday the worst staff was representing this place. I won't be back. Came in for one purpose only "The Impossible Burger!" I have heard rumors that this was the best vegan burger in the area, so we had to check it out! Walked in, and was told they were out!!! The only condiment I tasted was a garlic mayo "order extra of this!!!" The burger came with fries, but no drink. Very fair price tag of $10, but I was a bit scared since the place had a fast food feel to it. Out comes our burger, nice sized sandwich with crispy fries. I took a huge bite of the fake meat burger, and immediately was in utter shock! No way this was vegan! It tasted like meat; it's crispy ends, firm center, and texture was enough to make me stop chewing and crack open the bun to make sure it wasn't a real burger! The garlic vegan mayo its self is amazing enough to dip fries into! I would just personally like to thank the owner for not doing what everyone else has done "generic black bean burgers."
