I had family in town this weekend and we decided to try out The General Public for dinner. I really loved the menu they had for restaurant week. They had a ton of good options and everything was so good you can't go wrong. I did the hushpuppies, lot of breading but good flavor. The lettuce wraps are a sleeper and so so good. I could eat ten of those. I really enjoyed my dinner which was the Half Chicken and Fries. The chicken was so moist and fell right off the bone. My aunt got the coffee crusted steak, also had very nice flavor but was a little spicy. The waitress we had was great super helpful with the menu. The inside seating area is huge with plenty of tables and chairs. The only reason I knock this place down one star is they would not take a reservation online for a party of 7 and they can definitely fit larger parties here. They definitely need to fix that aspect on their website. We did not have a problem getting a table and will definitely be back. read more

Thank you Houston Restaurant Weeks for giving me the opportunity to try new restaurants I might otherwise not know existed. Thank you TGP for the donation to the Food Bank and hands down stellar meal. We used the HRW menu to try a vast variety of foods, opting for the crab hush puppies and empanadas for appetizers. Those crab hush puppies are food of the gods. Resplendent with crab, corn meal and a touch of jalapeños and doused with the accompanying honey butter, those jewels are prime time. The empanadas and sauce were fabulous too, crunchy and savory. Entrees lived up to the hype of the appetizers, the beef tenderloin and yucca fries was a delight. Coupled with a blue cheese butter this could have been overwhelmed by the blue cheese but the chef has a deft hand and the ratio was just right. The half chicken delighted my dining companion who named it the best chicken she's had in her lifetime. And the desserts? Outstanding. read more

My partner and I came in for a late night small meal to share and were not disappointed. We ordered the fish and chips, the crab hushpuppies and the TGP salad without a protein option. Be wary of any nut allergies as the salad does come with peanuts, but I thought it was very well balanced with nice sweet notes from the yellow raisins, and apples. It all came together really well with the house dressing. Highly recommend. The crab hushpuppies were tasty. Not too doughy or overworked and had a nice ratio of crab to herbs and seasonings. The service was nice and we did not have to wait long for food. We had normal check ins throughout the meal. Overall, a cozy restaurant/bar that's open late with a great staff. Ambiance- none arrived at 615 pm on a Friday. Happy hour crowd was leaving. Counted 14 people at 730 pm Ordered espresso martini- made with cold brew Do not call it an espresso martini. Husband had hibiscus ranch water - did not finish in 1.5 hours that is how bad it was. Food -ordered the spinach dip. Nothing to write home about. Looks like something that you would buy at Costco frozen and just sold out and slide through the oven to toast the breadcrumbs. No, really dinner menu more like bar food. So we had the ribeye sandwich with tater tots. It was OK. Again nothing to get excited about. Not sure where the four stars come from. Maybe it's to the brunch. Service- lady bartender was just here. Came in for lunch and it was a nice atmosphere upon walking in and we were seated right away. Our waiter was a little soft spoken, but very nice and attentive. We got the empanadas as an appetizer and there was four of us and only 3 came with it, but our waiter did forewarn us before which I thought was thoughtful, but my daughter wasn't hungry. They came and they were a good size and came out hot and filled with pops of flavor. My husband got the Philly cheesesteak, I got the half of chicken and fries, and my son got the bacon burger. Nice atmosphere, definitely could easily kick it here HH (barring covid and social distancing which isn't that feasible at the bar area). Anywho, we ordered drinks and I felt like mine was priced crazy high for what I received. I ordered the top shelf marg for $15 but that thing was so miniature, I was offended! We split an order of the honey fried chicken wings and they were delicious. My companion and I both ordered the fish and chips and was just slightly disappointed. They tasted more fishy than I believe they should have tasted. Otherwise they were battered nicely plus they came with a shxt ton of fries! We dined here after a nearby restautant was unexpectedly closed. I would not go back to The General Public when where are better options available nearby. In summary, the food and service were lackluster and I see no reason to return. We entered the General Public on a Friday night and were greeted by the hostess who seated us quickly. Our waiter, who looked to be working all of the tables in our area, was generally slow to respond. Drink orders took 5+ minutes to arrive. The waiter did slog through the whole service and got things done, but he did not look like wanted to be there. The one great highlight about The General Public was that the kitchen cranked our food FAST. We had our appetizer within 5 minutes, and our entrees arrived not long after that. The quality of the food, however, had problems. Overall the food was nearly good. The appetizer, crab hushpuppies, was served with a sprinkle of powdered sugar which was somewhat odd and did not suit the dish. That was unfortunate because the crab hushpuppies were pretty good without the sugar. I ordered the rosemary salmon entree which was served with potatoes. The salmon was cooked slightly rare inside, which did not bother me because at least it was not overcooked. However the problem was that the salmon was just bland with very little seasoning, and the only rosemary was a spig of fresh rosemary which added zero rosemary flavor to the dish; It was ONLY a ganish. The accompanying potatoes were slighly more seasoned but still not highly interesting. On the drink side, I ordered 2 pints of St. Arnold Amber Ale which tasted somewhat stale and lacked freshness. It was not foul, but it was not as fresh as it should have been. I'm not going to go back to a place if the employees don't seem happy, and the food isn't as great as it could be. Sat at the bar, not even busy, waitress or bar lady barely came over to us, had to ask for silverware, straws, syrup, vinegar, ridiculous! My parnerordered fish n chips with a side salad, brought out the salad and no fries, but also the lady didn't write down our order! This place was a hit. We came in around 1pm on a Saturday afternoon and there was practically nobody in the building... but I don't see why! The mimosas are $1 until 3pm, which is a steal anywhere these days. The ribeye sandwich was fresh and full of flavor, the fries were great. Portion sizes are great, not too much and not too little, pricing is affordable. The restaurant itself appears to be new with beautiful seating and ambient lighting. Terrible experience during brunch, I honestly give this place a 1/10. I went in with a friend on Saturday morning around 11:30 am and it was very empty inside so we thought the service would be wonderful and our food would come quick, but boy were we wrong. It took almost 40 minutes for my veggie omelet to come out and French toast and when the omelet came it was cold and they forgot to add cheese which is included on the menu. The waitress we had barely had any energy and it seemed like she rather be anywhere else. There was an employee holiday party going on in the back and so the kitchen was prioritizing cooking for them instead of the few paying customers they had seated . We also did the $1 mimosa special they had during brunch and it was literally all orange juice not sure if they even put a splash of champagne lol. I complained and they told me they could charge me $6 instead of the $1 if I actually wanted some champagne in the drink . At this point get rid of the special... it's not a special if you aren't going to make the drink right. It's the fact that they acknowledged that they were purposefully making it all orange juice that really got me. Then our waitress would come check on us every 30-40 mins. The experience was literally terrible. I would truly recommend going anywhere else in the city of Houston to eat, and this is me being nice. read more

food was good, however i did not enjoy my experience. there was nobody at the front to assist us and there were two servers who stared at us before finally deciding to help us get seated, getting their attention was pretty hard when we were ready to order. we were seated next to the kitchen and had to listen to the staff talking. i was with a child and one of them was obviously cursing in front of us which i didn't apprectiate. i had wanted buffalo sauce and had grabbed a workers attention and she seemed sort of annoyed but i just thought i was overthinking, she then just put it on the table and walked away sort of in a weird manner. overall food was good, chef was nice but i really wouldn't go back due to staff. read more
